On this week's episode, the hosts tackle A Real Pain, writer-director Jesse Eisenberg's tale of two cousins (played by himself and Kieran Culkin) who travel to Poland to honor their late grandmother and, in the process, come to understand their family's history through a new lens. Then, the three drop into the lush, sumptuous world of Like Water for Chocolate, Max's new six-part limited series adapted from Laura Esquivel's best-selling novel (which later became a critically acclaimed and internationally successful blockbuster.) Then finally, in a post 2024-election reality, do newsrooms still matter? What role will journalists play over the next few years? And can we solve the attention crisis in America? Our panel discusses. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel dive into a simple, yet important question: How are you doing? Email us at culturefest@slate.com.
We continue Spanish-Language Film Month with an adaptation of a Laura Esquivel novel that challenges notions on familial responsibility, mother/daughter relationships, and more through magical realism and food: Like Water for Chocolate. 80's TV Ladies' Susan Lambert Hatem and Dark Destinations' Father Malone join the episode to talk about the film's history, its unfortunate connection to Miramax, and indie film of the 90s. Starring Lumi Cavazos as Tita, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery and self-reliance as she experiences a tumultuous life in early 1900s Mexico. Forced to take care of her mother due to her being the youngest child, the film chronicles her life and her yearning for love and affection from an unobtainable source all the while she infuses her cooking with her emotions.

Scotty tried to claim we were being lazy this week, but Amelia violently disagreed. Either way, we have another research-free movie episode for you guys, where each of us picked a favorite film that we knew the other would probably never watch on their own. Scotty chose the Coen Brothers' 1991 black-comic Hollywood horror/noir Barton Fink, and Amelia selected Alfonso Arau's 1992 adaptation of Laura Esquivel's magical-realist novel Like Water for Chocolate. As Amelia said: to know these movies is to know us. WARNING: We go DEEP into spoiler territory with both of these films, so if you haven't seen them we suggest you take an afternoon to check them out before listening to this episode. Disfruten.

Alisa read A River Runs Through It by Norman McClain, and Josie dug up her copy of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.

In this episode, we focus on Malinche, the interpreter for Hernán Cortés. In an interview with Laura Esquivel, the author of Malinche (2006), she shares her insight into Malinche's perspective, and her reinterpretation of the figure of Malinche as a Mexican herself. The full interview is available on Youtube and both the Spanish and English transcriptions are available on https://hocpodcast.wordpress.com/2021/06/12/ep-16-la-malinche-interview-with-laura-esquivel.
It is so easy to hate some of the characters in this book, and we loved doing it. The story is lovely and a big thanks to our Patreon for choosing it for their Author Level Patreon benefit because this is also one of our favorite books of the season. This movie though, is something else. If you've ever wanted to see puffy sleeves and 80's synth inserted into farm chore scenes, then this movie definitely has you covered. If any movie adaptation has deserved a reboot - it might be this one. #RebootsThatNeedToHappen Episode Drink: Mexican Hot Chocolate 3 cups milk of choice 3 tbsp cocoa powder 3 tbsp tbsp granulated sugar Pinch salt 1/4 tsp cinnamon Pinch cayenne pepper 2 oz tequila Instructions To make hot chocolate, add all ingredients except for tequila to a small saucepan.
