Former Major League Baseball pitcher Brandon Puffer reached the highest level of the game. Then his life took a dramatic turn that ultimately led him from the bullpen to prison. In this powerful episode of The Gametime Guru, Brandon shares his remarkable journey through professional baseball, addiction, incarceration, accountability, faith, sobriety, forgiveness, and redemption. Brandon was drafted by the Minnesota Twins directly out of high school and spent years grinding through the minor leagues. He was released by multiple organizations, continued fighting for another opportunity, and eventually made a pitching adjustment that changed the trajectory of his career: dropping down and throwing sidearm. That adjustment helped Brandon climb through professional baseball and ultimately earn his call to Major League Baseball. He would go on to pitch for organizations including the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, and Boston Red Sox organization while competing against some of the biggest names in the sport. But Brandon's story goes far beyond baseball. He openly discusses his battle with alcohol, losing his sobriety, ignoring warning signs, and making decisions that eventually resulted in his arrest, conviction, and a five-year prison sentence. Brandon ultimately served three and a half years behind bars. What makes this conversation so impactful is Brandon's willingness to take responsibility for what happened. He does not make excuses. Instead, he talks about the ripple effect of our choices, the people who were hurt by his actions, and why true redemption requires accountability. It is time to get back to New France and the exploration of the middle of this beautiful country of ours. Our vehicle will René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, known to both his contemporaries and to history as “La Salle.” You’ve heard his name, especially if you live within driving distance of the Mississippi, but do you know what he actually did? This and the next few episodes tell La Salle’s remarkable story. We are back in New France, along the St. Lawrence River, now in the 1660s. The episode begins with an introduction to the geopolitics of North America from the French perspective, then pivots to La Salle’s early life and first years in New France, where he had received a grant of land on roughly the site of Montreal’s international airport. Finally, we conclude with his first journey of discovery, an attempt – perhaps fulfilled – to discover the Ohio River, of which he had heard from Seneca Iroquois who wintered with him in 1668-69. This voyage mattered, because it might have established French claims to the Pittsburgh area, the ambiguity of which was, along with George Washington, the catalyst for the French and Indian War. Sadly, those claims were ambiguous because the French national archives had misplaced the relevant narratives, and they only resurfaced in the 19th century. Archivists matter! There is an entire content industry built on "biblical archaeology" right now — TV shows, YouTube channels, the House of David series on Amazon, all of it running on big Nephilim energy. Cynthia Shafer-Elliott does not watch any of it, because it makes her yell at the screen. (Her husband, however, likes to watch her watch it.) She is a professor of Hebrew Bible at Baylor and an actual field archaeologist, and here is what she would rather you get excited about: in one of her first seasons at Tel Rehov, in a square she had been working, they found hundreds of ceramic beehives — industrial apiaries. Which means the land of milk and honey had actual honey. Not date syrup, not wild honey. Real, farmed, bee-produced honey. She also personally uncovered a household shrine with a lion's face carved into it, tongue out, human faces cowering under its paws. That one is in the Israel Museum now, and she says hello to it whenever she visits. We got into what "back in Bible times" and "biblical worldview" actually obscure, what household archaeology reveals about women's authority that the text buries, why ancient Israelite religion should always be plural, why lentils deserve more respect than they get, and yes — the residue analysis at Arad confirming THC at an official Israelite worship site.
