A nerdom divided, the disconnect between fans and creators - DRH Ep. 22

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 31, 1969 35:50

Dead Red Herring Podcast - Episode 22There is a great divide within what we might call nerdom. Today, it's more politics than story in mediums like movies, comics and games. Being a fan is no longer just appreciating entertainment, it's equally or even more taking a stance for politics and ideology according to certain people. Now we see the consequences of the progressive infection, how you no longer can have entertainment without a ideological whip cracking somewhere and if you oppose it, you might find yourself on the short end of the stick. But it's not only in the fandom, creators and publishers have also been infected and this leads to total destruction of once great IPs and franchises. This is more or less a rant from my perspective on the issue at hand and what I think could be done about it. Give it a listen and tell me if you agree or disagree. We need to come back to civil discussion, not keep slinging mud all the time. This is not for the easily offended, you have been warned.Follow us on Twitter - @DRHPodcast Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/dead-red-herring-podcast/donations

Dead Red Herring Podcast - Episode 20No monster is more renowned than the vampire. From the epic of Gilgamesh in ancient Mesopotamia to modern pop culture interpretations, what we know of as vampire seems to have always been part of human society. But without doubt, the most iconic representation of the horrid bloodsucker today is that of Dracula (1897), created by Abraham "Bram" Stoker in his novel with the same name. More recently though, Dracula has become synonymous with the game series Castlevania, created by Konami for the NES and released the first time in 1986.But how has the vampire aged and evolved in our time? We can't say it really has retained it's status as monster of pure evil with series like Twilight, True Blood and such. Dead Red Herring Podcast - Episode 41There are times when moral outrage just makes you question everything, or bang your head into a desk, whatever works. Things like that pride rock in the Lion King is a Trump Tower in Africa and that the hyenas are a representation of minorities. Or that if you play as a nazi or terrorist in a game, you as a person become one (and it normalizes it). Stupidity seems endless on the politically correct crowd... We decided to tackle it in out own way, with facetious humor. What are your thoughts on our discussion? Dead Red Herring Podcast - Episode 26Will Article 13 be the end of the free internet for those within the European Union? We don't know yet but the future looks grim. The title may be all in jest but it carries with it a serious nature. Because we don't know what will fall under the ban hammer of the content filters, we might have to brace ourselves for the worst. We have a discussion and share our thoughts on the matter. We also have a small history lesson, talking about the last farmers uprising in Sweden, The Klågerups riots (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kl%C3%A5gerup_riots) and the demonstration that ended military intervention in civilian cases, Skotten i Ådalen or the Ådalen shootings (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%85dalen_shootings). In the episode I say that only two people were killed, however the real number was five. Dead Red Herring Podcast - Episode 14   When it comes to bad and lazy character writing, the Mary Sue and her brother Gary Stu, is the worst sin of them all. We take a dive into the history and concept of the siblings and go on a long rant on the subject because we love characters that are round and have depth. Flat, boring and self-aggrandizing characters are shit-tier trash. We list both good and bad examples of primarily female characters, because this is an issue in contemporary nerdom.   This is not for the easily offended, you have been warned.
