After quite some time, I'm pleased to have Kate aka TheCloudyKate join me as we get to talk about some of their favorite fandoms! We start things off by tackling One Piece. Kate talks to me about how and when they got into the series, and whether they're into the anime, the manga, or the live action. We talk about their watch parties with friends, their thoughts on the live action series and where it may or may not go, their favorite characters, and what the One Piece could end up being (though Kate threatens to quit if it becomes reality) Then we jump over to Tabletop Roleplaying Games. From their first games rolling dice, to the games they've played - from Dungeons and Dragons, to Call of Cthulhu, Vampire: The Masquerade, and more. Kate talks about home games, being a part of actual plays, and what draws them to these games. Plus, Kate reveals the type of character they love to play when given the chance. It's on to books, as Kate and I talk about the books they love, what they've read recently, and what they're drawn to. We also talk about the rise of fantasy balls / book events, being a part of them as a guest and as a character hired by these balls. Lastly, we wrap up our conversation talking about Cosplay. Kate talks about how they got started in the hobby, the characters they choose to cosplay, some of their favorites, and what they're working on for the future. Is game-based learning just about making lessons more fun? Or can it actually deepen how students think, learn, and solve problems? And what happens when students are given space to fail, try again, and learn through play? In this episode of the Fueling Creativity in Education Podcast, Dr. Matthew Worwood and Dr. Cyndi Burnett welcome Adam Watson, an educator and author who explores how tabletop role-playing games can transform learning in the classroom. Listen in as the conversation breaks down what game-based learning really means, how it differs from gamification, and why games can be powerful tools for creativity, collaboration, and deeper understanding across subjects. In this thoughtful conversation, they explore: – The difference between gamification and true game-based learning – Why games need to be used with clear purpose, not just for engagement – How tabletop role-playing games can support learning across subjects, including science and math – Why failure in games helps students learn without fear – How games encourage problem solving, collaboration, and communication – The role of imagination and storytelling in building understanding – Why simple changes can turn an existing lesson into a game-based experience – How constraints and rules can actually support creativity – The importance of helping students learn at their own pace – Why play is often misunderstood and undervalued in education – How teachers can start small by rethinking one lesson or unit – The connection between games, creativity, and meaningful learning Adam also shares practical examples of how teachers can bring game-based learning into the classroom, including a science lesson where students design animals and test how they survive in different environments. If you are an educator looking for new ways to engage students and deepen learning, this episode offers simple ideas you can start using right away. About the Guest Adam Watson is an award-winning educator from Kentucky who began his career as a high school English teacher. He has served as a district digital learning coordinator and now works as a regional digital learning consultant supporting multiple school districts. He is also the author of Tabletop Role-Playing Games in the Classroom and works with educators to explore how game-based learning can support student growth across subjects. Part 2 of our SXSW Edu performance: if you're a parent or educator interested in Dungeons & Dragons and similar games, this is for you! Following a D&D actual play with kids at the table, educators Ryan, Raenelle, and Allison break down some of the many benefits kids experience through playing Tabletop Roleplaying Games. The Kids Table LIVE dungeons & dragons actual play is a recording of a SXSW Edu 2026 performance by @thekidstablednd . "What if kids could level up their Social-Emotional Learning skills while playing a tabletop roleplaying game? Our cast of kids & grownups will perform for you a live, improvised, likely chaotic game of Dungeons & Dragons. Afterwards, our adult speakers will break down how the game you just saw fosters outcomes like empathy, communication, and confidence, and why this type of support is so critical now. You'll come away with ideas for how to integrate D&D and other TTRPGs into classroom, library, after school, or home environments." Saint Valkyrie joins me from Puerto Rico as we dive into a number of different fandoms! I had stumbled across her account on Instagram and really enjoyed her work, and I'm glad you all get to listen! We start things off by talking about Video Games. Broad topic, as we start with how she got into gaming, her first console and games, and more. Then we have a focused disucssion on Cyberpunk 2077. We talk about what that game means to her, why she enjoys the game, and how it informs and educates in its own way. Her discussion changed the way I looked and approached the game. It was a great discussion. We also talked about a game she recommends, Sun Haven, and why you should check it out (link below!) Then we jump over to more gaming, but this time, tabletop roleplaying games! We talk about games like Dungeons and Dragons, and Pathfinder. We talk about the kinds of characters and stories she plays, the amount of games she's in, and how she got into TTRPG's in the first place. Next, we're flipping the coin of comic giants, with DC and Marvel. We get to talk about how she got into these two giant fandoms, where she falls on the spectrum of medium - comics? TV shows? Movies? Plus, we're talking about favorite characters, and favorite properties. Then we're wrapping up with a conversation about Cosplay. She talks about how she got started, some of the characters she's done and skills she's learned, along with characters she's currently working on and future plans. After 5+ years, Lexi aka LexiChuChu on IG returns to the podcast! Lexi's been busy over on their side of the country and we finally had the stars (and schedules) align for their return! We get to catch up a bit before we dive into the realm of Video Games. We kick things off by talking about Hades. Lexi has put in a lot of hours with that game and you'll find out how many hours they've got, plus their favorite weapons for dear ol Zagreus. Plus, we discuss Hades 2 and the different mechanics and gameplay from Hades. Lexi also talks about a game category that we have determined to call Catharsis Games. No, they're not the cozy games you're used to hearing about. Lexi talks about what games are in her catharsis game category and what draws them to those particular games. From there, we're venturing back into Tabletop Roleplaying Games. In Lexi's first episode, this was a topic we had talked about. Now here we are with even more to say. Lexi talks about the multiple Dungeons and Dragons games they play and/or DM in, along with other TTRPG's like Pathfinder, Coyote and Crow, and more. We discuss the gameplay at the table versus online, the storylines that have been created, and the TTRPG systems they'd love to try in the future (here's looking at you, Blades in the Dark!) We then come full circle with more Cosplay. Lexi talks about the past 5 years and what they've been doing in that space, and getting back into building/crafting some cosplay pieces for competition this year. We talk about what they're working on and even more ideas for the future. We also talk about Cosplay Judging, as Lexi has judged for several competitions. We talk about what it's like having seams looked at, techniques being judged, and how to be a good competitor (in skill and respect for others) in cosplay competitions. You know that moment when your players say, “We want to be the bad guys”? Yeah, this is the episode where we let them. Pull up your black cloaks, pour a glass of something red (preferably not from the paladin), and join us as we wander into the mists of the Domains of Dread—where even your dice fear to roll. Spooktober Returns! It's Spooktober on the RPGBOT.Podcast, and the shadows are thick with story hooks! Whether you're brewing up your own Ravenloft horror campaign or just love watching your players question their morality, we've got the perfect tricks and treats for your tabletop this season. Catch all Spooktober episodes wherever you listen to podcasts, and be sure to leave us a review—if you dare. Show Notes In this chilling episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts descend into the Domains of Dread, exploring what it takes to create a Dungeons & Dragons campaign centered on irredeemably evil characters. From the tortured moors of Ravenloft to homebrewed horror realms, they discuss how to balance story tension, sustain player engagement, and manage moral complexity in games that venture beyond good and evil. Topics include: Campaign Design for Evil Characters – Building motivation and narrative cohesion for villainous parties without descending into chaos. Moral Ambiguity in RPGs – Turning “evil” from caricature into compelling character arcs. The Art of Gothic Horror – Using atmosphere, pacing, and dread to make fear part of the gameplay loop. Domains of Dread in 5e – Exploring Ravenloft, the Darklords, and what makes each domain a reflection of its master's sin. Fear and Power Dynamics – Leveraging fear mechanics and temptation systems to reinforce the campaign's tone. Session Zero for Evil Campaigns – Establishing safety tools and boundaries before diving into depravity. The discussion blends humor, horror, and hard-earned DM wisdom—making this an essential listen for anyone who's ever wondered what would happen if their party actually joined Strahd's HR department. Key Takeaways Evil Doesn't Mean Chaotic – The most compelling villains have goals, loyalties, and internal logic; chaos for chaos' sake burns out fast. Atmosphere Is a Mechanic – In horror RPGs, tone-setting is as crucial as initiative rolls. Lighting, music, and description carry mechanical weight. Safety Tools Are Sacred – Lines and veils aren't optional—they're essential in games exploring darkness and corruption. The World Reflects the Villains – Domains of Dread are metaphors in motion; the land mirrors its Darklord's sins and failures. Power Has a Cost – The higher your characters climb, the closer they draw to their own damnation. Let Players Build the Horror – Player backstories, vices, and obsessions fuel the dread better than any monster stat block. Evil Campaigns Need Boundaries – Trust, tone, and transparency keep the horror immersive, not harmful. Welcome back, brave listeners, to another chilling chapter of the RPGBOT.Podcast. Tonight, we descend into the fog-choked alleys of Hunter: The Reckoning, where your best defense against the supernatural isn't garlic, holy water, or even a decent sushi roll—it's your character sheet. So sharpen your pencils, whisper your redemption arcs to the moon, and for the love of barbecue—don't botch that Willpower check, or you'll end up as brisket for the monsters lurking in the dark. Randall's Novella Malecon Before we roll dice and ruin lives—have you checked out Malecon, Randall's newest novella? It's a story steeped in atmosphere and strange corners of humanity, much like the touchstones and redemption arcs in roleplaying games we're exploring tonight. Unlike your Hunter characters, it doesn't need a Creed to keep it grounded. Available now on Amazon and as an audiobook narrated by Ash—because nothing says haunting like Ash whispering prose directly into your skull. Show Notes In this episode, the RPGBOT.Podcast crew dive fang-first into Hunter: The Reckoning RPG character creation. Tyler, Randall, and Ash guide you through building determined mortals and defining your drives, creeds, attributes, flaws, and skills. They explore the collaborative process of character creation in tabletop RPGs, showing how preparation can shape the narrative and survival of your characters. The conversation shifts between mechanics and storytelling, from equipment, health, and willpower management to the significance of touchstones that anchor humanity. Along the way, the team detours into sushi cravings, seafood adventures, and debates about American barbecue styles—because every tabletop gaming podcast needs flavor outside the dice. It's a DM's worst nightmare: your D&D players have made an unexpected choice, obliterating your plans, and you now have to DM on the fly. Those who DM for kids can find themselves in this position more often than DMs with adults, because kids can be wonderfully and chaotically creative players! How can you encourage your players to follow the narrative crumbs without taking away their agency? How can a DM prepare for the unexpected and grow their comfort with going off-script? Anne returns from the Philippines after 3 years as we catch up and talk about some fandoms old and new. Anne and I get to catch up a bit and jump right into one of the older fandoms that we both love, Tabletop Roleplaying Games. Anne talks about some of her favorite games, including playing Dungeons & Dragons in Critical Role's Exandria setting, the Power Rangers RPG, Dresden Files, and Vampire: The Masquerade. We talk about her continued role as running and hosting streamed actual play games on Twitch channel through all of this. From there, we move over to another older fandom that we share. Power Ranges. Distinctly, we talk about the end of the Power Rangers series. Anne talks about the final seasons of the show, the Netflix movie, and how it all wrapped up. Anne and I discuss what a future reboot of the series may look like, ponder a sequel to the 2017 live action movie, and just reflect on the franchise and its characters. Lastly, we wrap up with a new fandom, Cobra Kai. We both talk about finding it on the former YouTube Red channel, when they were investing/creating their own content, its move to Netflix, and why we both were drawn to it. We talk about favorite characters and story arcs, and even touch on the question on who the "real" Karate Kid is. You must listen to this podcast episode before venturing forth! Gather one and all and listen as Lachlan interviews Jess C. Wheatley and Declan Nathan about a hobby that is growing seemingly exponentially in popularity and accessibility - Dungeons and Dragons (or, more broadly, tabletop roleplaying games). We discuss how these games have helped people to express their creativity, explore their personalities, develop social skills and provide a safe space for many neurodivergent folks. BIOGRAPHIES: Declan Nathan Declan has been dealing with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and ADHD for his entire life. However, in the last ten years he got involved with his local tabletop role playing game community, and it has changed how he approaches stress and social anxiety. Jess C Wheatley Jess was raised in the Hinterland behind Byron Bay. She is a regional writer and director who revels in rip roaring stories with supernatural twists and heart. Her award-winning short script, The Call Out, led to a spot in 2023's WeScreenplay's Shorts Lab, while her TV pilot Alternate was awarded an Ian Potter Emerging Artist Grant to attend the 2024 Stowe Lab Writers Retreat in Connemara, Co. Galway. In 2020 Wheatley was selected for Screenworks Career Pathway Program ‘Inside The Writers Room' and the ‘Write From Home' initiative run by Screenworks and the AISF. A production designer, illustrator and storyboardist, Jess also holds 1st class honours in her Masters of Screenwriting. When not writing, she works in disability education support and runs D&D on weekends for kids through an NDIS social hub. Check out Jess's Portfolio here! Also check out her Instagram! D&D is fun, but can it help improve player confidence? Shaunie aka ShaucatCosplay joins me to talk about a few of my favorite fandoms! We start off by talking about one of my favorite things growing up as a kid. For the first time in 500+ episodes, we talk Scooby Doo! Shaunie talks to me about how she first got into Scooby Doo. From the original series, to the animated movies, and the multitude of different shows they've made, we cover as much as possible. From her favorite characters, to some of the underrated works. There are no red herrings here! Then, we segue that into cosplay, as Shaunie has cosplayed every member of Mystery Inc, including the van, plus a number of characters you may not even recognize! As well, we talk about how she cosplays her tabletop roleplaying characters, and how she incorporates that. We wrap up with a conversation about.... tabletop roleplaying games! From how she first got her start, to Dungeons & Dragons, and a game called Our Brilliant Ruin, we cover what appeals to her, what class she likes to play in D&D and some of her experiences in person, and online. Shaunie also talks a bit about her online business, Moonforge & Brightleaf, and the nerdy pins and crafts that they make. Episode 820 This week's hosts - Dave, HidaOWin, ScarrEditor - SavageMick "As many of you know, I have a background as a chemistry teacher. I've come to realize that much of what I teach my students applies not only to what goes on in the classroom, but in life also. It's not as crazy as it sounds. You see, technically, chemistry is the study of matter, but I prefer to see it as the study of change: Electrons change their energy levels. Molecules change their bonds. Elements combine and change into compounds. But that's all of life, right? It's the constant, it's the cycle. It's solution, dissolution. Just over and over and over. It is growth, then decay, then transformation. It's fascinating really. It's a shame so many of us never take time to consider its implications."
