Send us a textIt's no secret. There exists a toxicity within the Star Wars fandom (and really, all fandom) that sometimes makes it difficult to participate in that fandom. It's great when we can have a shared love and experience in Star Wars, that it can bring us together in excitement and appreciation for the vast mythology within. But when hate and ugliness invade those spaces, it's tough to want to even be involved. So, this episode discusses the roots of that toxicity and in giving a clearer understanding, a hope that we catch ourselves before we engage with and in that toxicity.

In this episode of Close All Tabs, host Morgan Sung examines the rise of “stan culture” in politics, where passionate supporters rally around political figures with the same fervor typically reserved for pop stars. Morgan is joined by tech and culture reporter Kat Tenbarge to unpack the evolution of cults of personality in digital spaces, what makes some candidates more “stan-worthy” than others, and how all of this has troubling implications for public discourse. Is “fandom” one of the drives behind our dysfunctional politics? That's the thesis of Dr Phoenix Andrews new book I Heart Politics – who writes about how people power is behind a series of quake moments in recent political history. He joins Andrew Harrison to discuss whether the phenomenon and power of fandom is overlooked in contemporary politics, and how the fandoms of politicians like Trump, Farage and Thatcher affect the cultural zeitgeist. • “The world feels mad, but finding people with a common passion is uplifting.” – Dr Phoenix Andrews • “Political fandom is basically Eurovision with consequences.” – Dr Phoenix Andrews We are sponsored by Indeed. Matty P Radio Presents: Marks v. Pros & Saturday Morning Cereal
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…Take some time this week to remember your original happy hour: Saturday mornings as a kid, waking up at dawn, jumping on the couch with a bowl of chocolate cereal, turning on the ‘toons, tuning out the outside world, and working your way into a sugar hangover before noon. This week, we celebrate May the 4th and the silver anniversary The Phantom Menace with writer, podcaster Marc Bernardin. Snap hiss back to a more civilized time. A time before, the internet, podcasts, reaction videos and the scummiest & villainous of them all the “Fandom Menace”. Star Wars had been out of theaters for 15 years. GI Joes, Transformers, TMNT and even The Power Rangers had taken over toy shelves across the USA. And then came a movie that changed it all… Meet Joe Black. Well, not exactly Meet Joe Black but rather the world debut of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace trailer and we haven't stopped talking about Star Wars since. Have you accepted Jar Jar Binks as your holy savior? Join Grim Shea, Marke, Johnny Heck and The Retro Cool Nerd Jimmy Leszczynski as they blast back to 1999 and where they were physically & psychologically for the theatrical return of Star Wars. Recorded live from the Golden Apple Foundation booth at WonderCon 2024, our guest Marc Bernardin is a monster of modern fandom. He's written for LA Times, Hollywood Reporter, Entertainment Weekly and staff writer for Alphas, Castle Rock, Treadstone and Carnival Row. He's co-hosted Batman Beyond with Kevin Smith and The Battlestar Galacticast with Tricia Helfer but he comes to use as a comic book writer on the new Mace Windu series for Marvel. And if if his cred couldn't get any more incredulous, he's also written for DC & Image Comics where in 2018, he won an Inkpot Award by CCI. I have a good feeling about this!

John and Craig discuss the dynamics of fandom, attempting to chart how things get cool, then hot, then terrible. But how are fandoms organized? Where do subcultures start? And how should you engage with the community that forms around your work? We also look at an alternative screenplay format from one of last year's best screenplays, and follow up on bake-offs, distracting accuracies in fiction, and UK writing credits. We then answer questions on original songs, packaging your script, and what you can do when you suspect you've been ripped off. In our bonus segment for premium members, John and Craig look at the many various fandoms and do their best to enrage them. Come for the amazing Star Wars discussion, stay for Sequoyah's George Lucas impression! That's right, Sequoyah rejoins me for one of the very best episodes of The Exhaust Port Podcast of all time. We tackle the bantha in the room and ask the question - is Star Wars fandom ruining Star Wars? - in an episode called The Fandom Menace. During this two-hour podcast, we cover a huge variety of topics, many of which are at the forefront of fandom today. What happened with the Solo box office and where does Lucasfilm go from here? How many Star Wars films and projects per year is enough or too many? Why does a certain segment of the fanbase feel like it's ok to go with a mob mentality and bully creators and stars on social media? Should said creators and stars be able to defend themselves when enough is enough? How much blame does Kathleen Kennedy, and to a lesser extent Rian Johnson, deserve for the divisive nature of the fanbase right now? Could George Lucas 'save' Star Wars? (spoiler, it doesn't need saving, quite the opposite)... Is Marvel the new 'fandom' and why is it not only universally loved but given a pass on certain things when Star Wars isn't? What the hell is a social justice warrior and is that even a bad thing? Was The Empire Strikes Back universally lauded when it came out? Is it time the 'A Star Wars Story' movies go bye-bye in favor of a more connected SW universe? And much, much more. Lastly a warning - there are quite a few f-bombs in this one (more than usual) as we got going and pretty worked up as the conversation flowed. Having said that, if you listen to The Exhaust Port regularly you're probably used to it so it shouldn't be a thing, and this is a great episode of our podcast - one of the very best. We hope everyone gives it a listen. Enjoy!

Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
In Episode 56 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. and Freddy Yaniz catch up some popular recent releases, namely writer/director Edgar Wright's pseudo-action musical Baby Driver and Illumination Entertainment's latest Minion-fest Despicable Me 3. Then, it's on to the battle between humans and apes in the trilogy-capping War for the Planet of the Apes. Andy Serkis reprises his lead role as ape leader Caesar -- thanks to the miracle of motion-capture technology -- as the character faces a fearsome new adversary in The Colonel (Woody Harrelson). Of course, this marks the ninth entry in the long-running Planet of the Apes franchise, but director Matt Reeves' film truly marks a conclusion to the storyline that began in 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes and continued in Reeves' own Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. But will this third installment in the rebooted series be its finest hour yet? War for the Planet of the Apes synopsis courtesy of 20th Century Fox: In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel (Woody Harrelson). After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet. In the debut of Data Science Storytime, Kevin Wofsy and Kyle Wild brainstorm the concept of the show, debate the difference between data science and non-data science, and recount the story of the action-hero data scientist who skipped a meeting with Kyle to rescue a little girl trapped on a mountain (or so he assumes).
