The media keeps the Disney Star Wars flame alive by writing about how it's okay to like Rey even though she's a Mary Sue because another well-loved (?) Star Wars Legends character is a Gary Stu. But also, she's NOT a Mary Sue. What year is it, 2017?! ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishTV.com ➡️ Audio Edition: https://open.spotify.com/show/6qJc5C6OkQkaZnGCeuVOD1 ➡️ Gaming News: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A7VIqE3r5MQkFgL9nifNc Additional Context: Ah, the great Star Wars discourse: a saga more contentious than the battle for the galaxy far, far away itself. Strap in, because we're taking a hyperspace jump back to 2017 (or at least it feels like it), when the term "Mary Sue" was as much a part of Star Wars conversations as lightsabers and the Force. The term "Mary Sue" refers to a character who is overly idealized, lacking in flaws, and seemingly unbeatable, often to the detriment of the story's believability or complexity. It originated in fan fiction but has since been adopted more broadly to criticize characters in mainstream media. Rey, the protagonist of the Disney Star Wars trilogy, found herself at the center of this debate, with some fans arguing that her rapid mastery of the Force and lack of significant personal obstacles made her a Mary Sue. Meanwhile, the media, ever the Millennium Falcon navigating the asteroid field of pop culture, has been trying to keep the peace—or at least make sense of the chaos. Articles sprang up defending Rey's character, pointing out that her story arc is not unlike those of other well-loved Star Wars characters. To bolster their case, some have pointed to characters from the Star Wars Legends (formerly known as the Expanded Universe) who exhibit traits similar to those criticized in Rey but who have not faced the same level of scrutiny. The twist? Amidst this swirling galaxy of opinions, there's a counterargument that Rey is not, in fact, a Mary Sue. Supporters argue that her character does face struggles and development, particularly in her search for identity and belonging, and that her abilities are explained within the context of the Star Wars universe. So, why does it feel like we're stuck in 2017? Because the debate over Rey's character—and by extension, the direction of the Star Wars franchise under Disney—remains a microcosm of broader discussions about storytelling, representation, and fan expectations. It's a reminder that in the world of pop culture, some debates are as enduring as the Force itself. This week, we read The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan. Sophie brings in an article to frame our ongoing discussion of what makes a good main character. We talk about the ridiculousness of Chiron and Annabeth's secrecy, Percy's lack of character growth, and the strengths of Rick Riordan's incorporation of Greek myths into the modern world. CW: Character death, absent parents, abusive and negligent parents, dead parents, kids in danger, kidnapping, discussion of sexual assault, exploitive power dynamics, neocolonialism, the Greek pantheon, discussions of destroying gods, and religion. Sophie continuously criticizes the gods and expresses a desire to “let them fade.” This is only within Rick Riodan's world and interpretation of Greek mythology. Here are the two sources Sophie used to pull arguments from: Ramm, Kathleen. “9 Signs Your Main Character Is Boring,” June 29, 2020. https://kingdompen.org/9-signs-your-main-character-is-boring/. Our hosts watch Season 1 Episode 3, Shadow of Malevolence. Jess and David are surprised when the Malevolence Trilogy feels like it’s finished after the second episode. Jess argues that Anakin is a Gary Stu while Zac is super into how well Anakin can fly. The hosts are not impressed with the plot of the episode but they actually really like the story of how Anakin’s superpowers plays against the rest of the characters. Onto this week's adventures in Clone Wars!

Sit back, relax, and join us for more psychic pollution of non-consensual Pokémon encounters. In this episode, the mailman’s curse is confirmed to be real. Not only that, our main character who has zero character at all ends up trying to avoid the onslaught of Pokétang and stumbles on one of the mythical raped mailmen, who explains that the “curse” gets worse over time. We finally get to the fateful encounter during the road trip between our Gary Stu and Sinnoh Champion Cynthia. Oh, and Adam’s girlfriend Tabby get’s screwed by a bird. Yeah, that‘s right, a frickin’ bird. Ridiculous. And stupid. And ridiculously stupid. Sir Splee and Nodachie were kind enough to be able to work around our schedule, so eternal thanks to them. Fanfics read: Solaceon Daycare’s Excellent Adventures (by Nidoran Duran) Readers: Stevo, David, Logan, Shawn, Tony, G, V Referee: Stevo As the accelerating innuendo of impeding incest thickens sludgier than a Canadian fart, we plunge ever deeper into the Pokésex abyss of Niduranduran’s “Solaceon Daycare’s Excellent Adventures”. Our main Gary Stu tackles another smattering of minty and licorice flavored sex juices. Sounds delicious? Sounds eloquent? It’s so not. They’re literally sexing up sentient animals. Many of them. Multiple times. And everyone is okay with this. There is no light at the end of this tunnel. It’s just another Absol’s anus. This time we take a trip to the murky waters of definitions in writing and storytelling. To complicate matters we take on a term first coined in fanfiction: the Mary Sue character. Dead Red Herring Podcast - Episode 14 When it comes to bad and lazy character writing, the Mary Sue and her brother Gary Stu, is the worst sin of them all. We take a dive into the history and concept of the siblings and go on a long rant on the subject because we love characters that are round and have depth. Flat, boring and self-aggrandizing characters are shit-tier trash. We list both good and bad examples of primarily female characters, because this is an issue in contemporary nerdom.
