He had to go SICKO MODE and do something TWISTED. Matthew Rao makes a surprise appearance and from there...well let's just say it gets preeeetttyyyy interesting, okay? We're back, babyyyy! Our Gamers Rest has ended and now we're ready to talk video games. But things are going to be a little different this time, that's for sure. This time, get this, this time it's all about the backlog. Surprise Mechanics 2024: The Backlog. That's the stuff. We're talking old games, old-ish games, and probably some new ones too. The backlog stretches ahead as it does behind. The backlog is all around us, spreading endlessly through time and space. "It's not easy to be me." When Vladimir John Ondrasik III sang this line in the hit song "Superman" by his band Five for Fighting, he wasn't necessarily talking about the turmoil of being a Gamer, but he wasn't explicitly NOT talking about it either, and sometimes that's enough. What I'm trying to say is sometimes games don't grip you. It happens to the best of us. It's normal! I'm normal! The best we can do is work through the pain. A new game will eventually come along that excites you. It has to, otherwise what am I going to talk about on this show? I need something to talk about on the show otherwise there isn't a show. The Surprise Mechanics Of The UK's Troubling New Loot Box Gambling Report (VL101)

Are loot boxes gambling? What if your gambling commission says they're not? What if the law says they're not? The United Kingdom is seeking answers to all these questions and more with the latest report from their "Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport Committee". Speaking out against the UK Gambling Commission, the report's scathing language (and contemporaneous commentary) seeks not to change the law's existing language, but to reinterpret it. The road to hell really is paved with good intentions...in "Virtual" Legality. Jay Armstrong is Design Director at Massive Monster and joins us to talk about their latest project Never Give Up the action side scroller featuring fast paced gameplay a progressive player controlled difficulty management and violent traps. There is also a narrator that gives "encouragement" as you die, and die and die again... We also talk the wobbly future loot boxes with random with randomly rolled rewards. With Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft gearing up with new policies to make the disclosure of loot box mandatory this could be the end of the contentious micro transactions. There are still a few missteps though as games like Apex Legends try to have the best of both worlds, but fans weren't happy. In this week's Power Up Podcast, Taylor is joined by Anthony Dennis, Andrew Duron, and Josh Atkinson as they recap the week's news, discuss their after E3 hangovers and so much more. Below is a detailed list of what was discussed on this week's show. First up, the guys discuss EA's recent response to the Loot Box problem and go on the record to say that they don't call Loot boxes what they are. Instead, they call them "Surprise Mechanics" What kind of response is that? With the push to ban gambling elements in Video Games nowadays, what could this mean for Video Games as a whole? Following our leading topic this week. Andrew discusses the news that a potential new PUBG game is in development. According to a couple of quotes from the company. PUBG 2 is looking to move away from the Battle Royale element and focus more on a single player experience! Is this actually doable? What could this mean for PUBG as a whole? Next on the list. Anthony dives into the supposed Final Fantasy 14 Live Action TV show that is currently being worked on! Is anyone interested in this? Is this something you have been waiting for for a long time? Let us know in the comments below and also let us know your suggestions on what elements you would love to see in the TV Show if any. Brett and Austin give a new indie game a try called Wargroove. It's inspired by a game from the Gameboy Advance days called Advance Wars. This one takes a different spin by adding a medieval/fantasy theme to the gameplay. Austin also plays Planet Alpha. It's a side-scrolling game with gorgeous graphics and surviving and solving puzzles in a foreign world. In our news, auto-chess is all the rage these days. Last week, Valve dropped Dota Underlords and Riot dropped Teamfight Tactics. Both are taking on the auto chess craze started by some modders in the game DOTA. EA says they're still committed to Anthem and Assassin's Creed has a story creator that has spawned several farming quests. In our discussion, naturally EA is back in the news with their legal briefing in Europe where they were being questioned about loot boxes and gambling. Their representative said loot boxes are actually "surprise mechanics" and people find them to be fun and enjoyable. She said they are doing nothing unethical. It's funny to see such a large company changing their story so often. Check out video clips of our news every week over on YouTube.
