Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary TimeThe movie Gladiator, directed by Ridley Scott, tells the story of a well respected general in the Roman Army, who sets out to exact vengeance against the corrupt emperor who murdered his family and sent him into slavery. Maximus fights for his freedom and those he has become friends with as fellow Gladiators. The theme of this Sunday's readings are about battle. Our first reading from the book of Daniel mentions a call to “Michael, the great prince, guardian of your people.” St. Michael and the angels go into battle on our behalf to fight for our spiritual freedom as we do not contend primarily with the flesh and blood, but with the principalities and powers of the underworld. May God grant us final perseverance in staying strong in our faith. Scripture Readings for November 17, 2024Daniel 12:1-3Psalm 16:5, 8-11Hebrews 10:11-14, 18Mark 13:24-32

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeIn today's Gospel Jesus welcomes back the twelve Apostles. He sent them out to preach repentance, drive out demons, and cure the sick. Now they have returned, full of stories of their successes and anxious to tell Jesus all they have done. Jesus has missed his friends. The excitement and anticipation has been tempered though when Jesus and the twelve arrive at their intended place of rest, and the crowd has arrived there first. Our human tendency is to roll the eyes, get frustrated, and remove "distractions" as soon as possible. Instead, Jesus rolls up his sleeves and gets to work as they were "like sheep without a shepherd." Pastoral ministry can be challenging and exhausting at times. How does Jesus move to compassion and empathy so quickly? His security and rest reside primarily in His relationship with the Father. What is your habit of prayer and in prayer? If it is distant, I invite you now to come away and rest awhile with the Blessed Trinity. Scripture Readings July 21, 2024Jeremiah 23:1-6Psalm 23:1-6 Ephesians 2:13-18Mark 6:30-34

Man is a sinner by Nature that every sinner needs a savior that is someone who is perfect to cleanse him from sin and that that cleansing occurs by Grace, God's favor to us, and love to us through faith by trusting on him and calling upon him. And that when we do that and transfer our trust from our own self effort over to Jesus Christ to do it for us, then we are saved and the word saved in the Greek means not only to be saved from sin and self, but to be saved from disease and from Evil oppression, in other words, the word means salvation from sin. It means healing and it means Deliverance. Smedes that I read: "To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you."Scriptures used:Matthew 18:15-352 Kings 4:1-7Romans 3:23Romans 6:23Ephesians 2:8-92 Corinthians 5:21Ephesians 4:30-32Luke 7:36-501 John 4:7-20Matthew 22:34-40Romans 8:1Hebrews 12:5-13John 3:16Luke 23:34Romans 12:19Matthew 6:14-15Psalm 66:18Mark 11:20-25John 14:131 John 5:14-15James 4:3**CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS**I said that a talent was a unit of measurement. It would've probably been more helpful and accurate to refer to it as a monetary unit instead of a unit of measurement (although I suppose it does "measure" an amount of money so to speak).I used the word "exorbitant" to describe the king's generosity and compassion. Perhaps "extreme" would have been a better word. Sometimes exorbitant can have a negative connotation about it, which is most certainly not what I was implying. I was only referring to the king's mercy in positive terms. When reading Matthew 18:34, I said, "...until he should pay off all his debt." I accidentally added the word "off". The verse actually says, "...until he should pay all his debt."I read Matthew 18:33 as, "And should you not have had mercy...". It's actually "And should not you have had mercy..." It was just a slight word order change that didn't affect the meaning in any way.As always, feel free to email any questions or comments to ijustwanttotalkabout@gmail.com!Take care!

Carefully Examining the Text

The LORD is portrayed as the good shepherd in vs. 1-4 and a gracious host in vs. 5-6.Some passages that talk of the work of a shepherd areGenesis 31:39-40 The shepherd worked tirelesslyI Samuel 17:34-36 He risked his lifeMatthew 18:12-14; Luke 15:3-7 He went looking after every lost sheepIsaiah 40:11 He carried the sheep in his bosom The shepherd protected and provided for his sheep. The LORD is a gracious host unlike Simon in Luke 7:44-4623:6 pursue- is a word that deals with a diligent chasing after another. Listen in as I provide the Scripture on what the Scripture says about itself so that you are ready to give an answer for your faith in the reliability of God's Word.Show NotesThe scripture claims to be the word of GodGenesis 1 “God said” "Thus saith the Lord" 413 uses of that exact phrase per my search on Biblegateway.com219 times "the Lord said" 54 times “word of God”This count doesn't include pronoun substitutes other references to God speaking like "God hath spoken."The Bible doesn’t contain the Word of God; it is God’s Word.Scripture says so2 Peter 1:212 Timothy 3:16If Scripture is not all God’s Word, then who determines which part is? Your own logic is fallible as a human being, so how can you be certain your reasoning should be your final authority? The apostles quoted scripture as God’s word Acts 4:25Rom 1:22 Timothy 3:15 Jesus testified that the old testament was God’s true WordHe revered and obeyed itMatthew 5:17-18Mark 14:49Matthew 26:53-54Luke 18:31John 19:28He believed that events and people in the OT really happened/existedCreation Matthew 19:4-5Able - Luke 11:51Noah and the flood - Matthew 24:37-39Jonah and the Queen of Sheba - Matthew 12:39-42He quoted it as an authorityMatthew 4Luke 18:20God is TruthChrist said He believed it to be trueJohn 17:17John 10:35bGod cannot lieNumbers 23:19Titus 1:2Truth is described to be one of God's attributesDeut 32:4Psalm 31:5John 7:281 John 5:20God claims to speak truthPsalm 119:160Isaiah 45:19Go to the Truth In Boots resources page for a large- but by no means exhaustive- lists of verses about this topic. All of the above verses plainly state two things: the scriptures do claim to be from God, and the scriptures teach that God is, and speaks, truth. Ultimately, you have to decide if your final authority is the Word of God or your own reason. For Christ said, (John 14:6) “I am the way and the truth and the life. Jesus' life was not perfect. While here on earth, he experienced every kind of emotion, temptation, and trial that we experience; but through it all, he was victorious. The beauty of The Gospel is that our Lord and Savior chose to leave the perfection of heaven and come to earth to live like us. In doing so, Jesus is now able to come along side of us, in our times of need, and show us how to have the same victory he had in those areas. We're peering into the heart of the matter, unraveling how the melodies and lyrics that echo in our kids' ears might be shaping their worldviews and emotional landscapes. We're not just talking tunes here—we're discussing the seeds of beliefs being planted with every beat and verse they hear. The allure of beats and harmonies isn't simply a matter of taste—it's a powerful force with the capacity to sway moods and beliefs. This episode isn't shy about confronting the myths surrounding the impact of music like Taylor Swift's, challenging the notion that it's all harmless entertainment. We're opening up the conversation to equip families with the discernment needed to face the subtle, yet profound, influences their children encounter in their favorite playlists.Navigating the celebrity culture maze becomes all the more important when stars like Swift command not just the airwaves, but also the hearts of their listeners. By fostering a foundation built on truth, we empower our listeners to guide their children in engaging with culture without losing their footing in faith. It's a call to all parents to anchor their young ones in a faith that withstands the tidal waves of cultural fads and fan fervor. Main Points CoveredShould I be concerned about my kids listening to Taylor Swift? How does music affect the brain?Art is an expression of worldview.Being a "Swifty" should not be a primary identity statement.Be on guard for yourself and your children so that you aren't taken in by the culture.Tips for healthily engaging with your kids around music.People and Resources MentionedRomans 1:18Mark 12:30Romans 12:21 Corinthians 10:5University of Central Florida ArticleThanks to Our SponsorsThe CSB Bible TranslationThe brand-new CSB Men's Daily Bible makes the ideal Father's Day gift.
