Breona is a professional sex therapist and author who lives not far from her hometown of Mt. Vernon, WA: home to the annual tulip festival. Growing up, Breona didn't have many resources to answer her questions about sex. An early investigation to online porn was discovered by her parents and inspired her mother to have The Talk with her, but questions remained about being “in love” and responding to her body's sexual instincts. College provided opportunities to finally dive into the “full menu” of sex, but she eventually realized she wasn't enjoying sex so much as performing it for her partners.  Coming out and finally having conversations about pleasure with her partners inspired her to become a sex therapist and help others discover themselves. One way she's done that is by writing The Clitarus Chronicles, a humorous and educational story about Clitty: an adorable, clitoris-shaped, cartoon dinosaur with the dream to write a novel but needs help figuring out the climax. The book features a meaningful metaphor about prioritizing pleasure and communication with partners and it's illustrated by Fruitbowl's multi-talented editor, Danny Tayara! Learn more about Breona's professional counseling practice at www.colorful-therapy.com.  Breona's story brings us to the conclusion of Fruitbowl's Season 4. Sexual experimentation with a friend happened early on, but, later, in college, things got complicated when a coworker raped John after a night of drugs and drinking. Jealous partners during his years as an aerobics instructor and boyfriends who didn't "get" his drag performance were additional obstacles. But through it all, John has maintained his irrepressible spirit and laser sharp humor which he expresses most clearly through his amazing drag persona, Connie. S4E16 - Zachery, 24. Seattle

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 23, 2022 60:18

When I was preparing to record my intro to Zachery's episode, I started to compose a long reflection on the recent tragedy in Colorado Springs where a 22 year old monster with a rife decided to murder 5 innocent people in a gay bar, but every attempt I made trying to articulate my rage and sadness seemed trite and cliché. So I decided to simply dedicate this episode to the victims. Some listeners might wonder why I don't have more famous people on Fruitbowl and the reason is simple: famous people are not very relatable. I prefer to feature stories of everyday people; queer people who have found a way to be themselves and live without apology. Many have escaped abusive homes, parents, communities and found new families who love them for who they are. The saddest part of tragedies like the one in Colorado is reading the obituaries of the people whose lives were cut short by hate and violence.  They are almost always described as caring, compassionate, fun to be around and I have no doubt that is true. They sound like the kind of people I would have loved to interview for Fruitbowl and it breaks my heart that I will never be able to hear their stories. I hope you can honor the lives of those we have lost to anti-queer violence by fiercely living your truth and continuing to love whomever you want to love, regardless of their gender, gender expression, race, income, age, background, culture. That's what queer people before us have fought so hard for and there's really no better way to tick off the bullies - the monsters with rifles and the politicians who encourage them - who try to silence us. And now, back to my regularly scheduled introduction: If you're a kinkster or interested in exploring kink, you're gonna love Zachery's interview. Even though he's only 24, Zachery has explored a wide variety of sexual activities that fall far outside of the definition of “vanilla” and he's had a lot of fun adventures along the way. He also brings with him a background in public health and sexual advocacy as well a stint working at Doghouse Leathers, Seattle's local queer sex shop.  Originally from small town Michigan where he came out to his family and friends at age 16, Zachery came to Washington for academics and exploring his ever-expanding taste for adventurous sex. You might even say he's a sex explorer.  Thanks to our post-production sponsor, the new SPACES app, powered by Hornet! Fruitbowl's creator and producer, Dave Quantic, provides his first full-length Fruitbowl interview in this “very special” episode hosted by editor Ryan Weadon. Dave's sexual orientation came into focus early on while growing up in small-town, suburban Kansas in the late eighties, but the only place he could meet other queer people was cruising bathrooms and public parks in near-by Wichita. An assault and HIV scare inspired him to come out in college and, eventually, to his family. Since then, he's lived in Dallas, New York City, Los Angeles and Seattle and, along the way, his preferences for negotiating love, sex and friendship have diverged from conventional ideas about relationships. It's only in the last few years that he's figured out what he wants and how he wants to live as a gay man.  Thanks to our post-production sponsor, the new SPACES app, powered by Hornet! Outwardly, he was a devout Christian of the Pentecostal tradition and aspired to be a church leader and during sermons, homosexuality was always used as an example of the worst kind of sin. Privately, though, he struggled with his sexuality and was the target of abuse by a family member. After his family found out, he tried several different faith-based solutions for “curing” himself and, in the process, met other queer people like him for the first time in his life. A gay friend in college encouraged Puddin' to consider - just maybe - that God didn't hate him for being gay and, eventually, he left the church and moved to a gay commune where he learned how to live off the grid and love himself. S4E8 - Debra, 71. Palo Alto

You might assume you don't have much in common with a 71 year old lesbian, but consider these three points: 1. Debra came of age at the dawn of the sexual revolution; 2. She's a legend in the lesbian kink community and has some really fun kink play stories; 3. She is a total badass and a one of a kind human. Growing up in famously liberal Palo Alto, Debra was a precocious young woman, hungry for knowledge but a proposal from a “perfect” boyfriend in her 20s felt premature so she broke his heart and dove into the deep end of California 70s counterculture at UC Santa Cruz. Soon she was exploring the GLBT club and her sexuality was confirmed when she saw a gorgeous woman step off her motorcycle and reveal her long, luscious hair. Since then, it's been one adventure after another: New York, Seattle, LA. And the adventure continues to this day. Debra recently decided to leave LA, move into a van and travel the country visiting friends and making new ones. Check out this link for Route 70+, a charming short film by Nina Penzhorn that illustrates Debra's journey. Her final advice: have as much fun sex as you can so you can look back on it fondly when you're old. Thanks to our post-production sponsor, the new SPACES app, powered by Hornet! Kenny is the definition of a survivor. A move to Chicago for a job seemed like an opportunity to start fresh until he was laid off and had to turn to sex work in order to support himself. But despite all the challenges, he refuses to feel shame about his past and his sexuality. Growing up in a small California town in the late 90s, Drew didn't have any exposure to queer people or culture except for the brief mentions on broadcast sitcoms. NBC's “Must See TV” was a particularly rich source of information. A secret relationship with another guy in his high school confirmed Drew's budding sexuality but it wasn't until college at UC Santa Barbara that he had his first legit boyfriend. Years later, a shocking discovery made him question their relationship but it also provided Drew an opportunity to forgive and move on instead of focusing on anger and regret. Living in LA proved difficult when it came to his insecurities about his body image but a one night stand right before the pandemic provided Drew a new way of thinking about body acceptance and, since then, he's embraced a new version of himself. Drews final advice: 1. Worry less about what other people think and 2. You don't need a six pack to get laid.  Drew has turned his obsession of old sitcoms into his profession. He's the co-host of the podcast “Gayest Episode Ever,” a show that explores the “very special” episodes of old sitcoms that feature queer characters and storylines. It wasn't until he discovered the Hole In The Wall bar in San Francisco that Justin found his tribe and made lasting friendships including his partner of 20 years. As they grew into adolescence, Saira applied this same academic curiosity to her interest in sex and kink and they have some great advice when it comes to exploring BDSM: make sure to inform yourself about the kinds of kink you want to explore, communicate with your partner or partners clearly and don't assume that the top doesn't also need aftercare.  Dave Pezzner is the Assistant Editor & Mixer for this episode. But homosexuality was still a taboo subject so Adam had to educate himself through early experimentation with friends and porn. After graduation, instead of coming out, he shut the door on his sexuality and locked it up tight in order to focus on his goal of becoming a concert pianist. As a first generation Vietnamese-American, Mike felt an obligation to make the most of his opportunities that his immigrant parents fought so hard to provide him. But even though his family was part of a robust Vietnamese community in Sugarland, TX (a suburb of Houston), Mike still felt like an outsider. Unlike most of his friends, he wasn't fluent in Vietnamese and his emerging sexuality only made him feel more separated. Even after leaving for college and coming out to his family, Mike maintained a rigid moral code and was skeptical of other queer people who had more loose definitions of relationships. It wasn't until he lived in New York City that he became friends with other queer people who were in non-traditional partnerships. Now he lives in Seattle with his two boyfriends and most of his friends have very open perspectives when it comes to love, friendship, sex and relationships. In his 33 years, he's come a long way from Sugarland. Mike also has some amazing adventures to talk about including an eye-opening hook up with a dom top in Hong Kong and a sexy cross-country adventure to Canada that ends with a very important lesson when it comes to dildo selection.  Dave Pezzner is the Assistant Editor & Mixer for this episode. As a kid, Donovan loved to dance and even took lessons beginning at age 9, but growing up in San Diego, he soon realized that the many military bases in the area fueled a toxic culture of masculinity and homophobia and any behavior outside the norm put a target on his back. Once, after seeing a movie, he was called a faggot and assaulted. So even though he had some early experimentation with same sex intimacy, he didn't officially come out until college. Married now and living in Palm Springs, Donovan is in a committed, non-monogamous relationship but, even as an experienced lover, he still has had struggles with consent and standing up for himself. He describes one time when a partner didn't respect his boundaries. Donovan has some great advice when it comes to hook ups, preferring connection over speed and convenience. Kissing and eye contact is sexy and - trust him - don't ever use Vaseline as lube. Dave Pezzner, Assistant Editor & Mixer. Andre can't remember a time when people thought he was straight. Raised as a girl by an independent single mom who took a “tough love” approach to parenting, Andre grew up with a rich inner life but had few friends. “Lesbean” was the preferred insult in grade school, so Andre made up a fictional boyfriend in order to avoid talking about sex.  Even after entering college and coming out as trans, Andre identified as asexual until he met his first girlfriend when they were the only ones who showed up to a sober vegan pride after party.  It wasn't until he moved to Chicago and lived alone that Andre realized he was free to explore sex on his own terms. He informed himself about kink, explored bathhouses for the first time and his first experience bottoming came from an unexpected guide. Now that he has more experience under his belt, Andre has decided to stop being the token “first trans male experience” for sex partners and has dedicated himself to being a sex-positive advocate for trans rights. Andre is Producing Desire Lines, an expansive portrait of a trans-inclusive gay community across several generations, artfully weaving together never-before seen archival footage, historical fiction, contemporary interviews, and re-enactments. The bathhouse is the central hub of the film, where past and present meet, where fantasies unfold, and where the archives spring to life through historical fiction. The diverse participants share their fantasies and fears about sex, bodies, relationships, and power through intimate conversations shot in their own domestic spaces. The same contemporary interview participants are also invited to write, embody, and perform their own bathhouse-related fantasies in moments that cleave open a space between fiction and reality, emphasizing fantasy as a powerful tool for seeing ourselves else wise. Dan grew up just north of Seattle and his adolescence was uniquely queer-positive in that it featured supportive parents and plentiful queer friends even in high school. But Dan had his share of challenges including insecurities about sexual performance, penis size and a long journey to discovering his preference for polyamorous relationships. An early education in flirting came courtesy of a friendly dominatrix. And Dan describes some fun role playing as a "boy" with his Daddy and Big Brother partners (who are both younger than he is). Karilla's story, in so many ways, reflects the common stages of personal growth that so many queer people go through: in our early years, insecurity about our sexuality and adults who fail to help guide us; during high school, sitting on the sidelines and watching as our friends perform all the typical hetero coming of age rituals; in college, painful memories about first love and the lessons we learn from heartbreak; and choosing our family and finally accepting and loving ourselves. And did I mention that she's had some really fun hookups? In my introduction to this episode, I talk a little bit about my efforts to interview more female-identified people. It's my hope that, over time, as the FRUITBOWL episode archive grows, more cis women will hear episodes like Karilla's and trust me with their stories. In fact, I'm determined to collect at least 20 interviews with female-identified interviewees before I even think of starting to edit the larger FRUITBOWL feature or TV series. Nathan's story is, at once, extremely unique and totally relatable in that he comes from an Egyptian-American family but was raised in an insular Christian community in New Jersey where being gay was a red line that was not to be crossed. The youngest of his family with two much-older sisters, Nathan didn't always fit in as the leader of his high school bible club. Fortunately, his best friend, Michelle, was the leader of the school's Straight/Gay Alliance. Years later, Stephen would ask Michelle why she didn't call him out as a closet case in high school. “Because that's what the bullies were saying,” was her brilliant response. Then, she took him to The Cock in downtown New York City and … well you can listen and find out what happened next. BTW, if you want another story from The Cock, you can listen to Adam's episode (S2E3). Elliott also has a lot to say about the act of "squirting" and how to achieve it with a willing partner and also best practices for negotiating intimacy with cis men who might not be experienced with sex with trans people. Alex grew up in Huntington, NY on Long Island for the first part of his adolescence and, at first, it almost seemed like a fairy gay-mother was watching out for him: a gay-friendly sex education class; a meaningful introduction to a trans woman; and a promising acknowledgement of gay life from his mom were all early examples of acceptance of gay life. But things with his family soon went south when they moved to Florida and in his early 20s he had to separate from them and make his own way. His first time with a guy came one day on his way back to college and, over the years, he’s had time to do some deep diving when it comes to experimenting with long edging sessions. Alex also has a very specific “best move” that only he can explain but it’s definitely worth taking notes. Erik came out early to a supportive family and an older sister who was also gay, but it took him a while to find his queer crew: one that honored creativity and alternative options for a gay kid who didn’t necessarily fit into the typical identity of musicals and Madonna. Instead, Prince was an early influence on Erik’s queer life in addition to his musical tastes. An unrequited love in high school proved difficult to shake. Fortunately, Erik’s best friend, a lesbian, convinced him to snap out of it and move on after heartache. In adulthood, Erik learned to abandon the heteronormative, rom-com mode of thinking and learn to let love be love and not try to control it or force it to be something that it’s not.  In addition to being this episode’s interviewee, Erik also provided all the original music cues featured in this episode. When he came of age, his dad took him on a week-long road trip in Europe in order to have “the talk.” The week ended in a Roman hotel room with access to porn. But even though sex wasn't stigmatized in his communal community, being gay was definitely not embraced as an option.  Fortunately, Shavit’s parents shipped him off to Jewish camp in the states every summer during his high school years. This "saved his life" as Shavit describes it. He bought gay porn in Penn station on his way to camp and, once there, no one was older than 25 and there was very little supervision. Soon, he told his girlfriends he was gay and even hooked up with a fellow camper when he returned home to Israel. Once graduated, Shavit moved to NYC and eventually travelled the world and met his first love while on a hike in the Himalayas. Currently, he is dabbling in DIY porn and continues to travel and have sexy adventures including visiting Dore Alley and Seattle's TRC campground (pre-COVID).  Listen on Spotify Listen on Apple Podcasts Fruitbowl is an official sponsee of Seattle’s Northwest Film Forum. Even though he knew he was gay pretty early on, Tai didn't have sex until college and, once he bottomed for his first boyfriend, he just kept on doing it until later in his 20s when he got the hang of topping. He has some solid advice for what to do to help a bottom make the most of his internal orgasm. Tai advises younger gays to make the most of their sexy times and encourages older gays not to take advantage of them. Salvador (who identifies as genderqueer and uses he, she and they pronouns) was raised in Whittier, California, between LA and Orange County. Growing up, he didn’t know that their twin was also queer, so most of her sexual explorations were conducted in secret: checking out queer erotic fiction and books about gay sex at the library and cruising the local mall’s bathrooms. The summer between their first year and sophomore year of high school, he struck up a romantic friendship with a football player from her high school, but things quickly fell apart once the school year started again in the fall. An important friendship with another high school outcast helped her get through the final years of high school.  But, once he graduated and went to college, they decided to be out and proud. His first time having sex with the “full menu” was with a more experienced local man who patiently guided Salvador through a sexual initiation that was both sensual and practical. After the death of her father, Salvador went through a period of sex and drug addiction but decided to seek treatment and, since then, has grown to prioritize connection and intimacy with their husband and other sex partners.

After a struggle with addiction, Paul rediscovered the joy and affirmation of masturbation and decided to start his own jack-off club in Seattle after experiencing the meaningful connection to community at Chicago’s JO club. I have a deep archive of interviews I am turning into podcast episodes and I'm planning on working hard this year to share them with you. I confess to not knowing what order I will share them. I kind of make it up as I go along. But after finishing the first three for this season, I knew we needed to hear from someone who DIDN'T grow up in a hostile and/or religious fundamentalist environment. But just because Nathan's mom accepted his sexuality from the very beginning - and at a young age - that doesn't mean he hasn't had his share of challenges. One major obstacle Nathan has experienced is his recurring psoriasis and finding partners who can look past the occasional outbreak. Nathan also has some fun thoughts and stories about cruising. Just listening to his past adventures makes me hopeful that, eventually, there will come a time when we can flirt out in the open and meet each other in public and maybe even have sex spontaneously without the fear of a pandemic. Growing up in a house full of beautiful, angry women. Showering with a neighborhood bully and hooking up with an Amry guy in Manilla who is even hotter than his profile pics. These are just a few of the topics Josh discusses in this Season 3 premiere episode of FRUITBOWL! For those of you who have listened to seasons 1 and 2, you’ll notice a new, stripped down format. Why? Put simply, all the extra host content took time to write, record, edit and mix and all of that stuff was likely content that listeners would skip over to get to the featured interview. So I decided to axe all that extra stuff and just focus my attention to what I am most passionate about: sharing the coming of age stories and sexual education of queer people. I’m also excited to introduce Saira B. as the new voice of FRUITBOWL! I’m hopeful that this new format will allow me the ability to produce more episodes, too. Let me know what you think!
