In 1999, another abduction rocked North Texas when 6-year-old Opal Jo Jennings was snatched in broad daylight as she played with other children in a field next to her house. The similarities were striking, and police in Arlington thought they had their man. In 2007, in Tacoma Washington, a twisted child rapist was exposed when he murdered one of his victims, and his ties to Fort Worth, Texas put him on the persons of interest list in the Amber Hagerman case. The following year, police in Dickinson, Texas renew an investigation from 1990 in which the victim, left for dead, survived. In 2009, her would-be killer was identified and arrested. It's unclear if this suspect was ever investigated for the 1996 murder of 9-year-old Amber Rene Hagerman, or if the survivor's case was even compared at all. Part 6 of 7. If you have any information about the abduction and murder of Amber Rene Hagerman, please call the Arlington Police at (817)459-5772. Bobby starts the show in a cheerful mood because his team advanced in the NFL playoffs and Jay's did not. Jay's weekend was a failure not only because his team lost, but he encountered a protest in Tacoma Washington and failed to capture any of it on video. Bob tried to coach him to be an influencer and join the protest for Asian massage parlor workers. Jay tried to join in but ultimately cowered in the corner because he didn't want to make a mockery of the event. Bobby and Jay swap massage stories from their younger years. *To hear the full show to go www.siriusxm.com/bonfire to learn more! 135 years ago, Norwegian immigrant Thea Foss lived in a ramshackle driftwood houseboat on the coast of Tacoma Washington. Kind, capable, and hard-working, she was an anchor for hundreds more immigrants during America's Gilded Age. Thea built the largest maritime company west of the Mississippi- but more than that, she was the heart of the community. (Plus there's a boat parade, a catastrophic fire, and a truly delightful cow.) Join Katie on location in Tacoma Washington as we explore the question of how to build community. __________________________ Fancy a Thea Foss MUG featuring her inspiring motto ALWAYS READY? The What'sHerName SHOP is open! Join us for our next adventure on a What'sHerName TOUR! If you're local to Tacoma, check out all the cool stuff Jennifer Trahan and Parks Tacoma are doing! Before the grunge movement of the 90's, and before the punk movement of the 70's, there was the garage band phenomenon of the 60's. One of the forerunners of both punk and grunge from this garage band period is Tacoma Washington's The Sonics. Their classic lineup consisted of Rob Lind on harmonica, vocals, and sax, Gerry Roslie on organ, piano, and lead vocals, Larry Parypa on lead guitar and vocals, Andy Parypa on bass, and Bob Bennett on drums. The Sonics had a fast, hard-edged sound similar to The Kinks, and performed with a speed that would inspire punk rock.Boom is their second studio album from the band, released in February 1966. As with many songs from the mid-60's, all the songs are short. But with a non to the future punk movement, many songs are even shorter, clocking in at just over 2 minutes. The Sonics take their name from Boeing, the aviation company also based in Tacoma. The name of the album is likely a play on words for the "sonic boom," the thunderous sound produced by an aircraft exceeding the speed of sound. The music on this album is energetic and abrasive, and while some fuzzy guitar distortion is included the overall feel is raw with little extra production. The classic lineup would fall apart by 1968, with members leaving to join other bands, attend college, or in saxophonist Rob Linds' case - become a fighter pilot in the Vietnam War. Gerry Roslie would be the sole remaining original member with new members jumping in and out of the band until 1980. Wayne brings us this forerunner of punk and grunge for this week's podcast. CinderellaThe lead-off song from the album was an original piece written by Gerry Roslie. The lyrics relay a boy meeting a girl at a bar, having a great time drinking and dancing, and just when things start to get going well, the girl is gone by midnight. He's Waitin'This song starts the B-side of the album, and was also a Gerry Roslie original. This "boy loses girl" song is not a happy one! The lyrics reflect the boy's thoughts on being burned by a girl. Now he is telling her that Satan is waiting for her. "It's too late, you lied, now you will fry." Louie, LouieRichard Berry wrote and performed this song in 1957 with The Pharaohs, and covers of this song are common with garage bands. The Sonics' version is quite fast, and modifies the pronunciation from "Lou-ee Lou-ee" to "Lou-eye Lou-way" in the chorus. It is hard to separate this song from the thoughts of fraternity parties and the comedy movie "Animal House." Shot DownThe song that closes out the album laments about striking out when approaching a girl. "I play a guitar. I even drive a brand new car. Big man in town, I've been shot down." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion picture "The Rare Breed"This western starred James Stewart and Maureen O'Hara and was one of the first films scored by the now-legendary composer John Williams. STAFF PICKS:Crying Time by Ray CharlesBruce leads off the staff picks with the lead single and starting track to Ray Charles' album of the same name. The song was originally performed by Buck Owens in 1964, and Charles kept the country feel while taking the cover to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. He won the Grammy Awards in 1967 for Best R&B Recording and Best R&B Solo Performance for this track. It's a Man's Man's Man's World by James BrownLynch brings us a song that takes its name as a play on the name of a 1963 comedy film, "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World." The minor key track has lyrics decrying the chauvinism of society where all the work of modern civilization are attributed to men, but it would all "mean nothing without a woman or a girl." Brown recorded the song in only two takes, and it would become a staple of his live shows for the rest of his career.Secret Agent Man by Johnny RiversRob features a surf rock song originally developed as the opening intro to the U.S. spy television series "Secret Agent," which aired from 1964 to 1966. The ditty became popular, and Rivers developed it into a full single. The song would go to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming both a signature song for Rivers and a rock standard for future bands and shows.Lies by The KnickerbockersWayne's closes out the staff picks with a song from an American band deliberately trying to mimic the sound of a British Invasion song. The trio harmonies definitely give it a Beatles quality. As you might expect from the band name, the Knickerbockers got their start in New Jersey as a garage band. The track came together in about a half hour. COMEDY TRACK:The One on the Right is On the Left by Johnny CashThis comedy song about a band with incompatible political leanings amongst its members takes us out for this week's podcast. #490 Athlete Success Story Paul Hunziker Welcome Welcome to Episode #490 of the 303 Endurance Podcast. We're your hosts Coaches Rich Soares and April Spilde. Thanks for joining us for another week of interviews, coaching tips and discussion. I am personally very excited about this episode. I have had the privilege of coaching Paul Hunziker since August of 2024. It's not uncommon to have a new athlete and see their training history and see lower than planned training like missed workouts. Paul was the exact opposite. Paul is a workhorse and really needed a coach to reign him in rather than spur him on. Paul recently blew his estimated marathon time by more than 10 minutes with an exceptionally executed pacing and nutrition plan finishing in 3:14:13. We are going to have that interview for your today plus much, much more! Hi Rich! Man, I am so looking forward to talking with Paul and hearing about his marathon journey and all the growth in between! I am also stoked to watch IM 70.3 St George tomorrow morning AND race Fandango (not at the same time of course). Will you be tuning into St. George? We took a temperature and it was 57 degrees. Laura took off like a champ and the rest of us got ice cream headaches. We then rode for about 2.5-3 hours in the park and then did our off-the-bike runs on the trails. Talk about a truly epic weekend! Whilst you all were out there tackling the ice cold waters of the Chatfield Reservoir, I was out there taming the wilds of Stage 3 of the Pike's Peak APEX! I had the hardest, most heart-pumping, adrenaline inducing ride of my life! I also had a bit of a spill. As I said at the start, Paul Hunziker from Tacoma Washington has an incredible work ethic. When we charted his strategy for this year, it was clear he wanted to PR a marathon and finish an full-distance IRONMAN. He recently checked off the former and is now focused on the latter. Get Gritty Tip: Just Get Started Alright athletes, it's time to Get Gritty. Today's theme is simple—but powerful: just get started. Here's the truth: most goals don't fail because of a lack of talent. They fail because we wait for the “perfect time,” the “perfect plan,” or the “perfect mindset.” But perfection is a myth. If you're waiting for the stars to align before you take action—you'll be waiting forever. Getting started is where the transformation begins. It doesn't have to be a full-send workout. It can be putting on your running shoes. Opening your training plan. Logging that first 10-minute spin. One small step creates momentum, and momentum creates belief. Every big success story you admire? It started with one decision to move forward—often imperfectly. So the next time resistance whispers in your ear, “Not today,” or “You're not ready,” I want you to respond with action. Any action. Forward is forward. Because once you're in motion, everything changes. The path reveals itself, the confidence builds, and before you know it—you're becoming the athlete you imagined. So this week, don't overthink it. Just get gritty. And just get started. TriDot Workout of the Week: Workout Summary: Functional Threshold Test (20-minute) Session Note: Warmup 10 min @ Z2 with 3 x 30 sec (30 sec) Spinups and 3 x 1 min (1 min) @ Z4 Main Set 20 min - all out maximal effort Pacing Tip: Start at the average watts of your previous month's 20-minute. Use erg mode to control the effort. 1st 5' - hold that previous 20-minute average, 2nd 5' - slowly increment watts until you reach a perceived limit, 3rd 5' the same. Last 5' can be more aggressive. Be sure to enter/confirm your assessment results to update your training intensities and race projections. Fun Segment: Triathlon Fandango! A wild mix of multisport mayhem—where strategy meets spontaneity, and nothing goes according to plan! According to the Oxford Dictionary, a Fandango is a lively Spanish dance for two people, typically accompanied by castanets or tambourine. It can also be a foolish or useless act or thing. So with that context, are you ready for TRIATHLON FANDANGO! In this segment we'll throw a little controlled chaos into your training day! A ‘fandango' is usually a lively dance or an unpredictable situation… and let's be honest, that sounds a lot like your last transition, doesn't it? In this segment, we celebrate the unexpected moments, awkward moves, and off-the-cuff brilliance that only triathletes truly understand. Blockbuster Buoyancy You have to swim in a costume from your favorite movie—what do you choose and how do you make it hydrodynamic? Bonus points if it involves a cape, fins, or lightsaber. Snack Station Showdown Your only bike nutrition can come from gas station snacks. Build your fueling plan using three items and explain how they power your ride. (Yes, you can pick a taquito or tornado, but good luck with the aftermath.) Discipline Detour You must swap one triathlon leg with a totally unrelated skill—karate, chess, salsa dancing… what do you pick and why would it give you a competitive edge? Just imagine the T1 transition into a full tango. Bag Swap Roulette You have to trade your tri bag for a mystery duffel handed to you at check-in. What's the one item you're praying is inside—and what would send you straight into panic mode? Please let it be chamois cream… please. Celebrity Play-by-Play Your entire race will be commentated live by one celebrity. Who do you choose, and what kind of outrageous commentary are they dropping mid-race? Morgan Freeman narrating your port-a-potty stop? Iconic. And that's a wrap on this round of Triathlon Fandango—where the weird gets wilder, the hypothetical gets hilarious, and the only thing more unpredictable than your T1 socks is what we'll spin up next time. Got a ridiculous scenario you want us to tackle? Send it our way and keep the Fandango fun rolling. Until then, stay weird, race hard, and never underestimate the power of a good snack and a wild imagination! Closing: Thanks again for listening this week. Please be sure to follow us @303Triathlon and @grit2greatnessendurance and of course go to iTunes and give us a rating and a comment. We'd really appreciate it! Stay tuned, train informed, and enjoy the endurance journey!

The gunshot death of Lori Ann Johnson, age 34, in Tacoma, Washington on September 12, 1994 has sat idle for over three decades. I have come to know her family well. The mother of the homicide victim is elderly now. It is her fondest wish to know who killed her child. Lori's lifeless body was found in the 1200 Block of South 11th St. in Tacoma (the Hilltop area) in the morning by a physician on his way into his office. No witnesses came forward. There was no CCTV camera footage, no useful prints, or DNA evidence. While three suspects were named in her file, there did not appear to be any follow-up. There have been no updates. - not one in 30 long years. Mrs. Johnson feels forgotten. The victim's daughters have grown up without answers too. I accompanied Mrs. Johnson to the Tacoma P.D. several years ago. One officer met us in the noisy lobby and refused to say anything except "It's an open investigation. I can't speak with you." He was abrupt and dismissive. Can you help? If you are a journalist - can you breathe life into this old case? If you are in law enforcement can you see why nothing has come of this homicide (not even an annual phone call to Lori's family)? Could you be a witness or know someone who is? If so, please contact me.

Malik A (14 Years) is telling his story at an unknown meeting held, I think in Georgia in the middle of June 2023. If you are in the PNW toward the end of July I just added a Young Peoples Conference (WSCYPAA VII) taking place in Tacoma WA. If you have never been to a Young Peoples event (your age does not matter) the energy and passion of the participants never fails to impress. I spoke to someone involved in it last night and based on how enthusiastic he was this will be no exception. I had an email from Megan yesterday asking if I had any recordings of her friend Hal who passed on this week, Hal was one of the men at the retreat that Chuck C led that became the book "A New Pair of Glasses". Hal T got sober in 1973, he is telling his story, (he has a great sense of humor) in 2011 at the Ohio Street West Sunday meeting held in Los Angeles.
