Send us a textBettySoo stops by the show to discuss her latest release, If You Never Go Away, Childhood trauma, Life, inspiration, and more. ********BettySoo's vocal prowess is a thing of wonder. A world-class instrument of deft phrasing and purity, a voice that knows when to hold back and when to dive in. At her own live shows, taking a verse onstage with friends or singing harmonies in sessions with Austin's finest, BettySoo sings with consummate loveliness and self-assurance. A voice that knows the roots of American music inside and out; coming from a most unexpected place –a diminutive Korean-American with a deceptively girl-next-door demeanor. They call it the live music capital of the world. Austin, Texas, is a city where the musical bar is set high. Since exploding on the Austin scene a decade ago, BettySoo has carved out an enviable niche among the very best the city has to offer.BettySoo is as Texan as they come.Raised outside Houston by first-generation Korean immigrant parents, educated at UT, she grew up listening to the Great American songbook and country radio. Older sisters led her to the world of singer/songwriters, and nights spent at The Cactus Café and Hole In The Wall turned her on to the legacy of Texas song. Her 2007 solo disc, Little Tiny Secrets, garnered heavy regional airplay; 2009's Heat Sin Water Sin produced by Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams, Ray Wylie Hubbard), provided building blocks to a national (and international) audience. In 2014, When We're Gone, co-produced with cellist Brian Standefer (Alejandro Escovedo, Terry Allen) placed her firmly in the first rank of songwriters working today. She's won the requisite awards: New Folk at Kerrville, Songwriter of the Year at Big Top Chautauqua, The Dave CarterSongwriting Award at Sisters Folk Festival, Mountain Stage's New Song. She's played the festivals –multiple South by Southwests, Kerrville, Calgary and more. And the radio shows –E-Town, Mountain Stage, WoodSongs, BBC 2 with Bob Harris. Her singing has been heard on Riverdale and Girl Boss, and her songs formed the musical backbone to Christine Hoang's 2017 play A Girl Named Sue, singled out by Austin360.com in their review as “gorgeous, moving ballads comment(ing) on the themes of the scenes they punctuate.”The future looks auspicious for BettySoo.In the Time of COVID-19, BettySoo cut a unique path through the broad streaming landscape --and as with everything she does, she approached it in a way that invites authentic connection, encourages compassion, and merits listening. Her weekly Nobody's Happy Hour via Zoom fostered an intimate and meaningful community and were hailed by many as one of the most creative streamed residencies anywhere.“In her own words, ‘I guess Asian-American songwriters aren't that common. At least, not in Texas.' Well, songwriting and singing of this caliber aren't that common anywhere." - No Depression******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. With billion-dollar deals going around, what's up with the ABJ's coverage of dive bars, little shops and gritty restaurants? They're just as important to this city as Google, Dell or any of the big dogs. In fact, the big dogs came to sit on these porches, so Austin had better not lose these long-timers.

When people visit Oʻahu and stay in Waikiki, most just look for whatever's nearby and end up at chain spots or hotel restaurants. They're everywhere—and they're often overpriced. What's more, many visitors assume that anything affordable or truly local is far away. But Waikiki is just three miles long. You don't need to leave the area to eat well or save money—you just need to know where to look. I've eaten at all the spots below, and trust me, they're worth finding. Here's a short list of my favorite low-key gems—small on size, big on flavor. Pho Minh Thu Waikiki Address: 2301 Kūhiō Ave #136, Honolulu, HI 96815Price Range: $10–$14Portion Size: Generous; big bowls, sharable apps Pho Min Thu I walked into Pho Minh Thu on a humid afternoon craving something comforting and left borderline obsessed with the beef pho. The broth is clear but deeply flavored, and they pile in the tendon if you ask. I could drink that broth like tea. What to order: Beef Pho with tendon, shrimp spring rolls Zigu Waikiki Zigu Address: 413 Seaside Ave, Honolulu, HI 96815Price Range: $18–$32Portion Size: Full entrées, craft presentation Zigu brings a modern touch to Japanese izakaya dining. The interior is hip, and they use local ingredients for a fresh take on traditional dishes. It feels more upscale without being stuffy. What to order: Local vegetable tempura, wagyu sushi, uni udon Maguro Spot Address: 2441 Kūhiō Ave, Honolulu, HI 96815Price Range: $9–$16Portion Size: Bowl portions; solid for one You'll miss it if you blink, but this tiny window spot serves some of the freshest poke in Waikiki. No frills, no fluff—just rice, raw fish, and flavor. It's grab-and-go, and the price is fair. What to order: Spicy ahi poke bowl, shoyu ahi with avocado maguro Buho Cantina Address: 2250 Kalākaua Ave, Honolulu, HI 96815 (Top floor of Waikiki Shopping Plaza)Price Range: $16–$28Portion Size: Large; great for sharing This rooftop Mexican spot delivers killer views and tasty bites. It's lively at night but still chill enough for lunch. They've got solid tacos, strong margaritas, and a vibe you won't get downstairs. What to order: Short rib tacos, churros, jalapeño margarita Buho Cantina Teddy's Bigger Burgers Address: 134 Kapahulu Ave, Honolulu, HI 96815Price Range: $11–$15Portion Size: Big burgers, filling fries This is where I go when I want a real burger. No prefab patties—these are juicy, messy, and cooked to order. The seasoned fries seal the deal. What to order: Original Burger with garlic fries, teri burger Teddy's Bigger Burgers Nakamura Ramen Waikiki Address: 2141 Kalākaua Ave #1, Honolulu, HI 96815Price Range: $12–$18Portion Size: Big bowls, filling Good ramen in Waikiki is rare—Nakamura nails it. From multiple New York Times bestselling author Tom Clavin comes the thrilling true story of the most infamous hangout for bandits, thieves and murderers of all time―and the lawmen tasked with rooting them out. Robbers Roost, Brown's Hole, and Hole-in-the-Wall were three hideouts that collectively were known to outlaws as “Bandit Heaven.” During the 1880s and ‘90s these remote locations in Wyoming and Utah harbored hundreds of train and bank robbers, horse and cattle thieves, the occasional killer, and anyone else with a price on his head. Clavin's Bandit Heaven: The Hole-in-the-Wall Gangs and the Final Chapter of the Wild West (St. Martin's Press, 2024) is the entertaining story of these tumultuous times and the colorful characters who rode the Outlaw Trail through the frigid mountain passes and throat-parching deserts that connected the three hideouts―well-guarded enclaves no sensible lawman would enter. There are the “star” residents like gregarious Butch Cassidy and his mostly silent sidekick the Sundance Kid, and an array of fascinating supporting players like the cold-blooded Kid Curry, and “Black Jack” Ketchum (who had the dubious distinction of being decapitated during a hanging), among others. Most of the hard-riding action takes place in the mid- to late-1890s when Bandit Heaven came to be one of the few safe places left as the law closed in on the dwindling number of active outlaws. Most were dead by the beginning of the 20th century, gunned down by a galvanized law-enforcement system seeking rewards and glory. Ultimately, only Cassidy and Sundance escaped . . . to meet their fate 6000 miles away, becoming legends when they died in a fusillade of lead. Bandit Heaven is a thrilling read, filled with action, indelible characters, and some poignance for the true end of the Wild West outlaw. Tom Clavin is a bestselling author of 25 nonfiction books on American and military history, sports, and entertainment. His writing career began in journalism, as a roving reporter for The New York Times for 15 years as well as a contributor to national magazines including Smithsonian, Men's Journal, Parade, Reader's Digest, and Sports Illustrated. The Old West comes to life at the Hot Springs County Museum & Cultural Center! Belly up to the original Hole In The Wall bar where outlaws from the Hole-In-The-Wall gang once sat, including the infamous Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid! Though spirits are no longer served to patrons, it is a great place to sit and imagine the sights, sounds and smells that once surrounded this icon from the past. Walk through an old town setting where you can peer through the doors and windows of an old general store, doctor and dentist offices, a reconstructed jail, a newspaper and print shop, barber shop and much more. Explore one of the largest arrowhead collection. Also in the collection is an original petroglyph carved by early Native Americans. Do paleontology and geology strike your fancy? The museum also houses several prehistoric artifacts consisting of plant and animal fossils, as well as part of a leg bone from a wooly mammoth. If the geology of this region interests you, we have an amazing display of rocks and minerals from the area including a very large quartz geode. This history of Hot Springs County would not be complete without honoring our veterans. We have cases full of artifacts from area soldiers who served in several conflicts over the years. https://thermopolismuseum.com/podcasts --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/loren-alberts/message

When Ken's Substack article (The Big Beautiful Wall) appeared on Philip Yancey's popular blog (Hole in the Wall), among the many comments was a grieving father who shared the tragic loss of his 19-year-old-son to fentanyl poisoning. Ken reached out to Mark Bodnarczuk to hear more of a story that would underscore the tragic crisis facing our nation. Mark's academic pedigree took him from the Nazarene tradition to Wheaton College, the University of Chicago, and on to Harvard. An accomplished physicist, he currently works for Stanford University on a Nobel Prize-winning project: the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Mark has written a book (to be released this summer) telling his son's story in detail - the all-too-easy access to counterfeit pills and fentanyl poisoning. Mark also shares how the sudden, indescribable loss has changed him - leaving him with a new understanding of his own faith, the power of forgiveness, and a grace that sustains. In this touching conversation, Mark shares the journey of his extraordinary son Thomas, the otherwise ordinary evening on the Internet that took his life, the source of the illegal, toxic drug, and his encounter with the perpetrator who would face criminal charges. Mark also encourages every American to be aware, engaged, and alerted to the need to put an end to this deadly crisis. Join Big Addison and Jesse Deubel as they discuss the history and magnificence of Columbus, NM and the vast public lands surrounding this quaint community. Today, most visitors to Columbus are there for a short stop while en route to Old Mexico. Situated just a few miles north of the port of entry to Palomas, MX visitors often stay on the US side of the border and walk over to Mexico for shopping, dining and reduced price medical care. The treasures of this region are plentiful and one of New Mexico's best kept secrets. A visit here wouldn't be complete without checking out Pancho Villa State Park. Jesse Deubel frequents the area because it offers some of the most exceptional quail hunting in the world. Complete with luxurious amenities and a welcoming attitude towards hunting dogs, the Hole in the Wall Getaway makes a perfect homebase for hunters. In addition to robust quail populations and a high concentration of javelina, the nearby Florida Mountains are home to gravity-defying persian ibex. The spectacular public lands around this region are rich with cultural sites and they deserve permanent protection. A National Monument designation would ensure that these areas remain pristine for future generations while simultaneously enhancing existing uses like hunting, hiking, regulated off-highway-vehicle adventures and cattle grazing. For more information about the benefits a national monument would provide, please visit www.protectmimbrespeaks.org . Enjoy the Listen! For more info:Hole in the wall getawayPalomasColumbus, NMNWMF

In 2010, the body of a man was discovered in a locked hotel room in Beaumont, Texas. Apart from some minor bruising on his groin, the man didn't have a mark on him – yet he had the internal damage of a severe car crash victim. There was no sign of forced entry or a struggle. He had no enemies, and nobody in the hotel had seen or heard a thing. The police were at their wit's end, and after months of investigating, the case of the body in room 348 went cold. That is, until legendary private investigator, Ken Brennan, took on the case.
