My goal is to help drummers and musicians become more well rounded humans through their instrument. My opinion is that we must take a holistic approach and address our physical, mental, and spiritual wellness in order to maximize our potential as humans, and as a result, become a "better" musician.

Yo! If you're tired of not knowing what to practice on the drums and wasting time in the practice room, this is for you! Today I want to share a drum lesson and practice room concept that will help you improve at playing drums, even if you don't have a teacher. If I had to put a label on it, I'd say this is more of an intermediate drum lesson, but beginner drummers are welcome to learn from this, too! These drumming concepts in the practice room will help accelerate your progress without wasting time wondering what you should practice or practicing drums inefficiently. This drumming system helped me get better faster, and I'm excited to share it with my fellow drummers. 0:00 Intro 0:42 How Long Should You Practice? 1:56 Skill Acquisition Feedback Loop 2:49 Types of Feedback 4:58 Recording Yourself 6:39 Having Clear Drum Goals 7:06 The Importance of Evaluating Your Drumming 12:14 Analyzing Strengths & Weaknesses 13:05 How To Give Yourself Objective Feedback 16:12 Prioritize What To Practice 17:03 How Much Should You Focus on at a Time 18:35 Growth Mindset
For my drummer friends looking to improve your hand speed and investigate some aspects of hand technique... this is for you! Whether you're a beginner or intermediate drummer or maybe you've been playing for a long time, I hope this podcast gives you some things to think about when going down the rabbit hole of hand speed and drumming technique. I also give some thoughts on finger vs wrist technique and general hand technique for drums. Last week I went on vacation to Mexico with my beautiful wife, and while I was there, all I brought were sticks and a drum pad. I took advantage of the time away from a drum set to focus on my hands. I rediscovered, in my opinion, the fastest way to develop your single stroke roll. If you're reading this - I just want to say a quick THANK YOU for listening. We just passed over 500+ downloads! I know, to some people that's not a significant number at all. But to me, it means a lot. Ok I'll get on with it. In this week's episode I announce the release of my newest YouTube video on Polyrhythms (having learned from Pete Magadini, this is one of the few topics of which I feel legitimate enough to make claims). You can check that out HERE. Oh, and it would mean a lot if you became a subscriber on YouTube. Only if you enjoy the videos, though! I then make an attempt to tie the concept of polyrhythms (tracking two related pulses simultaneously and changing between the two) to being able to understand multiple perspectives in our world view and personal lives. Because recently I've been seeing a gross excess of narrow-mindedness and lack of compassion, especially in the music community. We need to have conversations in good faith! We need more empathy and compassion, and to forgive people who are honest & good faith humans who might make a mistake, in the pursuit of a greater understanding. Anyways, I hope the attempt was successful and makes sense in a roundabout way. Besides that, you heard a clip of a new song composed by my roommate Tom Hannum, called "Dunkin" that you can check out at his Instagram HERE As always, if you want to reach out, I'd love to hear how you're handling life as either an established or aspiring drummer/musician. What's up you Groovi humans? This week I wanted to talk about the newness in my life and how I've been adapting and dealing with all the changes that this world has brought us in the past few months. And how it definitely won't be the last time we have to deal with stressful situations caused by unsettling change. Besides that, you get to hear a little snippet of a new jam that I've been working on with my roommate and bass player, Thomas "Chops" Hannum. Check out the transcription and breakdown I did of Richard Spaven below! How To Play Drums More Like Richard Spaven: Transcription Breakdown
In this week's episode of In The Groove, I talk about how reading the book "Atomic Habits" has steadily changed the person I am today over the past 6-7 months. Forming habits, like anything else, takes work and discipline. But like anything hard, it's usually worth it in the end. I also share an update on (and play a snippet of) the Richard Spaven transcription I've been talking about for several episodes as well as a polyrhythmic idea I wanted to share. Instagram: @groovi_drums
In this week's episode of In The Groove, I had to do some last minute improvising to put out a mini-episode to fill in for what was originally supposed to be a conversation with CEO and owner of Hooke Audio. So instead, I pulled two great quotes from Anthony and reflected on them for a few minutes. I hope you find them as valuable as I did and get you excited for the full conversation.
We made it to episode 10! I know it's not much, but I enjoy celebrating small milestones. In today's episode I spend some time to zoom out and look at the big picture. I ask myself why? Why practice my fundamentals? Why do I even want to get better at drums? Do I really HAVE to be a drummer? (Spoiler alert: no) Thanks for listening. Follow me on Instagram! @groovi_drums
In this week's episode of In The Groove, I begin the episode with a brief disclaimer in regards to what's going on in the world and still deciding to put out a podcast. Some things I talk about this week are my change in daily schedule, a little bit about diet, and finally, the importance of gratitude in daily life. Follow me on Instagram @groovi_drums to keep updated with my drumming endeavors!
A brief response to the grief, rage, confusion, and sadness that is spreading throughout the world. RIP George Floyd.
This week I had the opportunity to chat with an amazing human being and friend of mine, Ms. Ellen Williams. She's an artist, designer, former comedian, and all around great person. We explore some topics such as common lifestyle choices of creatives, the importance of having a creative outlet other than your "career-oriented" pursuit, being honest with yourself, and more. Check out her art on Instagram: @imellenwilliams Follow my drumming journey: @groovi_drums
On this week's episode of In The Groove, I explain why I didn't upload a podcast last week and briefly describe how I dealt with the unpleasant situation. The good news is that I turned one of the worst mental days of my life into something positive: a more focused vision with my drumming. And for next week, I can't wait to share the amazing conversation I had with visual artist Ellen Williams, the first guest to join In The Groove! To check out my drumming endeavors follow me on Instagram
In this week's episode I keep it brief. I discuss my shift in mindset from breadth to depth - going deeper with my current knowledge and skillset rather than trying to stretch myself too thin. Then I talk about an experience I had last week that reminded me that it's OK to be playful every once in a while even though you're serious about achieving greatness. The key is to find balance between playful/creative practice and regimented/critical practice. Instagram: @Groovi_Drums
In this week's episode of In The Groove I recap the Snoop Dogg transcription I finished last week, talk about what I'm practicing this week (some Richard Spaven), and then dive into the importance of defining your goals and values in order to create a roadmap to achieve them. I even get a little vulnerable and share my "personal manifesto" of values and how I want to live my life. On this week's episode I share my thoughts regarding how we can reframe doubt and even welcome it, how I find and make the most out of inspiration whenever I can, and what I'm practicing lately. Doubt is something that can be anxiety-provoking and even threatening to our dreams/goals. But I hope this episode helps make it a little less scary and something that can eventually be met face-to-face. Have a great week. As some of you know, I’m a huge proponent of physical health and its effects on improving our overall wellness, and consequently, our musicianship. Last week I completed my 100th workout in a row, so I figured I'd talk about why I'm such an ambassador of fitness.
In this episode of In The Groove I recap some of the highlights from the past week. They include transcribing Adam Deitch, not drinking coffee for four days, and talking with strangers from Instagram! You can find a picture of the handwritten transcription in my most recent blog post "Being Open & Present". Welcome to my first ever podcast: In The Groove Since this is the first episode, I spend a little time talking about why I even wanted to start a podcast. Then I share my thoughts about entering the "Actual Proof Challenge" drumming competition, comparison, and the importance of setting goals. My goal is to help drummers and musicians become more well rounded humans through their instrument. My opinion is that we must take a holistic approach and address our physical, mental, and spiritual wellness in order to maximize our potential as humans, and as a result, become a "better" musician.
