Adam Chase has been playing music all his life. He and his brother, Matthew Chase, headed the band Black Eyed Susan from high school through college that caught the attention of so many ears. This allowed them the opportunity to play with artists like Aerosmith, Crosby, Still & Nash, Wyclef Jean and many more.  Since then he developed talent as music director, composer, and band leader and continues to create incredible tribute projects like Jazz is Phish, The James Brown Dance Party, and A Family Affair (tribute to Sly & The Family Stone). He also created Dab Sessions to celebrate improvisation.  These projects have allowed him to collaborate with some of the best musicians of our era including Jeff Sipe, Adam Deitch, Domi and JD Beck, Jonathan Scales, Jeff Coffin, Felix Pastorius, Clyde Stubblefield, Dennis Chambers, Billy Martin, and Claude Coleman, Jr.  The list goes on.After sitting down to talk with him it became clear to me that he has been able to work with so many greats, not just because he's a great musician (and he is), but also because he has focused on developing and cultivating relationships. It's clear he's not just in it for himself. Check out his latest band, Chess Club, where he and Danny Darress inject humor into well crafted melodies and rhythms. This was just one of many unique elements that passengers on the Soundship Spacesystem were treated to during the crew's mission at The Caverns in Pelham, Tennessee. The Caverns felt reminiscent of episodic festival runs at Telluride and The Gorge between its remote location, a secret set, and special guests both on stage (Adam Deitch) and in the VJ booth (Glass Crane, Psybernautics) creating a truly unique live music experience with a country flair that stands entirely apart from any other stops on tour that left us all saying, “Let's go back to Tennessee”**All music from this episode along with the rest of the Spaceship Soundsystem tour dates are available for listening at prettylightslive.com Photos provided by Raymond Angelo

Welcome the great guitarist/singer/songwriter/producer PAPA MALI! Based in NOLA for the past dozen years, Papa Mali is a certified rock n' roll troubadour, having lived several musical lives in numerous locales across the past half-century. An artist for art's sake and rad to the core, Malcolm is an old-school bluesman, reggae devotee, soul/R&B aficionado - he's at home with funk, folk, and gutbucket piano joints too. The man is a living breathing chameleonic musicologist in our midst. A conversation brimming with detailed ruminations and colorful pointifications. In addition to the Crescent City, Papa Mali reflects on nascent days soaking up culture in his Shreveport childhood, before wandering onward to Little Rock, Kingston Jamaica, Austin, and eventually New Orleans, with a plethora of potent points between. The lifelong soundtrack to these travels, trials, and tribulations is a terrifically-tasty gumbo on the transistor radio station. Episode 070 starts with a short message from your host, a moment of reflection and prayer for peace. Followed by a brief tribute to the dearly departed NOLA drummer/icon RUSSELL BATISTE JR. In this episode, Michael & Clifford are joined by Andy Whitehorne (Music Editor for The Blue Mountain Review) as they interview Grammy-nominated producer and drummer Adam Deitch Adam Deitch (www.DeitchBeatsDontQuit.com) While other kids were more interested in "Being Like Mike," Adam Deitch was more interested in "Being Like Quincy." Adam began composing around the age of 11 in his Dad's basement studio. Pretty soon artists in the neighborhood came knocking. Now, years later Adam Deitch's career has crossed genres and he plays the role of both producer and drummer. Adam was inspired by hip-hop at an early age, inspired by Public Enemy and Eric B and Rakim. Adam has produced records for such luminaries as 50-Cent, Redman, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Chali 2na and MF Doom. He has also done major session work on drums for artists including Justin Timberlake, Daniel Bedingfield, Anthony Hamilton, DJ Quik and Wyclef Jean and the Fugees. Adam has toured the world and recorded as a member of the Grammy Nominated John Scofield Band, Pretty Lights, the Average White Band, The Fugees, Wyclef Jean, Meshell Ndegeocello and his own Break Science and Lettuce.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Eric Krasno over Zoom video! The idea of “losing yourself” may seem negative, but to Grammy-award winning guitarist Eric Krasno, the phrase has a deeper meaning. Featuring head-nodding handclaps, horns from Jazz Mafia, and a funkified bass line drive, Krasno's new single “Lost Myself”. Featured on his new solo album, ‘Always' is filled with songs like “Lost Myself,” which consecrate, commend, and celebrates the permanence of family. On ‘Always' – across ten tracks with inimitable instrumentation, eloquent songcraft, and raw honesty – the Soulive and Lettuce co-founder, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and two-time GRAMMY® Award-winning songwriter-producer defines himself as not only an artist, but also as a husband, father, and man. “Lost Myself” follows the release of recent singles like “Silence,” about the emotional havoc that a lack of communication can wreak on the human psyche, and “Alone Together,” about the beauty that can be created between two people in solitude.Something of a musical journeyman, Krasno's extensive catalog comprises three solo albums, four Lettuce albums, twelve Soulive albums, and production and/or songwriting for Norah Jones, Robert Randolph, Pretty Lights, Talib Kweli, 50 Cent, Aaron Neville, and Allen Stone. As a dynamic performer, he's shared stages with Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, and The Roots. Out of seven nominations, he picked up two GRAMMY® Awards for his role as a songwriter and guitarist on Tedeschi Trucks Band's ‘Revelator' and guitarist on Derek Trucks Band's ‘Already Free.' But as the Global Pandemic changed the world's plans, he found himself thinking a lot and writing just as much. At the suggestion of old Lettuce bandmate Adam Deitch, he connected with musician and producer Otis McDonald and collaborated on a version of Bob Dylan's “The Man In Me,” a song that had taken on a deeper significance for Krasno in recent years. Recording first virtually and then at the Bay Area's legendary Hyde Street Studios, famous for 2Pac, Grateful Dead, and Digital Underground, Krasno and McDonald tapped into a shared spirit as co-producers, ultimately forming Eric Krasno & The Assembly with Otis on bass, Wil Blades on keys and organ, Curtis Kelly on drums, and James VIII on guitar and vocals. In the end, Krasno welcomes everyone to be a part of his family on ‘AlwaysWe want to hear from you! “... when I listened back to “The Man In Me,” I was like okay we created this via “satellite” … but it really felt live, and it had a feel ... It felt like we were a band.” -- Eric Krasno For the first episode of 2022, Eric Krasno returns to sit down with Otis McDonald to celebrate the release of their new album, Always! In this conversation, you'll hear an in-depth rundown of the making of the record, including the story of how the two met through Adam Deitch in the beginning of the pandemic, the genesis of the Otis McDonald project, and using demo vocals for final mixes on the album. They also talk about Otis' home base at Hyde Street Studios, which gave birth to classic albums by artists including the Grateful Dead and Herbie Hancock, using technology to work together remotely, and take a look inside of Kraz's musical headspace when he talks about the writing process for the album. Joe Bagale, also known as Otis McDonald, lives by the philosophy that there are only two kinds of music; good music and bad music. He was born in upstate New York, but his tenure in San Francisco was where he definitively honed his craft, releasing three albums under his name from 2008 to 2014. Following the success of his early releases, Joe was commissioned by YouTube to write and record 30 new tracks for their audio library, which was the beginning of a new project he calls Otis McDonald. Playing all the instruments, writing, producing, mixing, and mastering 30 songs in a 3 month period, it proves to be his funkiest and most interesting music to date. Joe has shared the stage with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, Mike Gordon, and many other legendary artists, and by the end of this episode, you'll know why he's had the success that he's had in recent years. Stir Crazy With Steve Jenkins: Conversations With Creatives During The Quarantine

My guest this week is Nigel Hall-an amazing singer/keyboard player/multi-instrumentalist.Born and raised in Washington D.C. and currently residing in New Orleans, LA. Lettuce's keyboardist/vocalist Nigel Hall is an accomplished musician steeped in Gospel tradition, as well as classic soul, funk, hip hop and R&B. Hall was discovered by Lettuce co-founder Ryan Zoidis around 2007, who invited him to Brooklyn to meet Eric Krasno and record with jazz band Soulive. Nigel was a huge fan of Soulive and this was a major moment for his young career. At that same time Hall connected with Lettuce drummer Adam Deitch and The Roots drummer/founder Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, and soon began appearing onstage with Soulive, Lettuce, and Royal Family affiliates. Nigel Hall was first nominated for a Grammy for his work on Ledesi's 2009 LP Turn Me Loose. In 2011, Hall decamped to New Orleans to immerse himself in the Crescent City's musical heritage. It was in NOLA where Hall was drafted by Jon Cleary for his band, and appears on the NOLA pianist's Grammy-winning LP Go-Go Juice. Hall toured with Robert Randolph and the Family Band, John Scofield, and briefly with Tedeschi-Trucks Band, before he was chosen as a keyboardist/vocalist for Warren Haynes Band. Hall appears on Warren Haynes Band's studio album Man in Motion and live LP Live at the Moody Theater, released on Stax Records. Hall appears on the Grammy nominated Family Dinner Vol.1 from Snarky Puppy, as well as Grammy-nominated album from New Orleans own Cha Wa. Hall has also appeared onstage with Marcus King, Pretty Lights, Dave Matthews Band, and more. In 2012, Hall co-founded The Nth Power, a funk/soul/R&B band with former Beyonce drummer Nikki Glaspie. In 2015 Hall departed The Nth Power and soon released Nigel Hall Band's critically acclaimed debut Ladies & Gentleman... A Bonnaroo 2013 performance saw Hall share the stage with the likes of Chaka Khan, Willie Weeks, James Gadsden, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Solange, members of the Wu-Tang Clan, Anthony Hamilton, SchoolBoy Q, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Chance the Rapper, and Thundercat. As a solo artist, Hall has been nominated for the New Orleans Offbeat awards, won New Orleans Big Easy Award, and has been a featured solo artist at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for five consecutive years. Hall will be performing at New Orleans’ Essence Music Festival for the first time in July 2019. Nigel Hall joined Lettuce as a full-time keyboardist and vocalist in 2015. Hall is featured on Lettuce's forthcoming fifth full-length LP ELEVATE, due in June 2019. Nigel and I talk about all kinds of stuff including where he came from, what his favorite Christmas song is, All kinds of music stuff, and the importance of living your truth and being who you are. This is one of my favorite episodes yet and I think you’ll like it also. We talked yesterday and here’s how our conversation went.

For the “Did you Know” section, Leah provides research on the emotion of love, often present during live music, and Taraleigh tells listeners how to cultivate love in all its forms in her “Daily Jam.” Denise Hettinger Deitch has studied music since her early childhood. In middle school she was in a special music program in NYC when she began playing drums. She then attended Berklee College of Music and graduated with a degree in Music Education. During her time in Boston, she performed on drums with various bands. She then moved to NY to be with family with her husband and baby son. Denise performed with Bobby as a duo 4 to 6 nights a week in the NY Tri-state area for approximately 21 years. During that time she began teaching music in NY area and obtained a Masters degree followed by an additional 60 credits. She then retired after teaching for 25+ years. She is now performing as percussionist and background vocalist with the Bobby Deitch Band and teaching drums and piano privately. Bobby Deitch began his love for music at the age of 5. His eclectic musical taste was attributed to the fact that several genres of music were played in the Deitch household, on a daily basis. Bobby gravitated to drums by age 8. At age 8 Bobby’s uncle Dave Abrams, a well-known professional drummer and vocalist was an early influence on Bobby’s early musical development and by age 11 his parents purchased his first drum kit. After graduating high school in 1971, Bobby focused on studying music more seriously and moved to Boston, Massachusetts to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music. There he began to work on all aspects of music such as composition, harmony, ear training and counterpoint with some of the best instructors in the business. Bobby has performed on drums on several recordings such as pianist/composer Richard Sorce’s acclaimed Latin album “A Place I’ve Never Been” and guitarist/Berklee faculty member Richie Hart’s “331/3” album. In April, 2020, Bobby, along with his band The Bobby Deitch Band (BDB) released their second album, “Work With Whatcha Got”, which has reached global acclaim. Adam Deitch’s career has crossed genres and he plays the role of both producer and drummer. Recent highlights include a Grammy nomination for Ledisi's Turn Me Loose for which Adam produced and co-wrote two songs, co-writing and production for Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi's Sony debut, production of two tracks on Matisyahu's latest and a platinum single for Italian rap sensation Fabri Fibra. In 2020, Lettuce was nominated for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album with their 2019 release Elevate. This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts,

It's an honor & privilege for this esteemed gentleman to slide through for a proper powwow. To celebrate his 4/26 b-day, we dig into a pair of fresh records: Lettuce's new LP Resonate (5/8), & his own forthcoming solo electronic EP The Age of Imperfection, AND check-in with his fam. Literally! His wonderful parents BOBBY & DENISE DEITCH hop on the phone to discuss all things Deitch. Bobby Deitch Band  new album dropping 5/15, so we get the scoop on that, plus loving parental reflections on Adam & his boys. Ep.032 finishes strong with the great RYAN ZOIDIS (sax - Lettuce, AD4, BrkSci Live Band). Zoid has collab'd with Adam Deitch for nearly a quarter century, he's a world-class musician & vibrant conversationalist. This episode is a family affair. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ADAM! #DeitchBeatsDontQuit - ISOLATION STATION v.4 ADAM DEITCH intro - 6:00 BOBBY & DENISE DEITCH intro - 41:00  RYAN ZOIDIS intro - 1:17:30  Adam Deitch needs no introduction. He's steadily among the more celebrated drummers in the game for over two decades, laying the foundation for modern funk music. He pushes the art skyward, prolific in hip-hop, electronic, and jazz. He's been the iconic engine powering Lettuce ever since the future-funk cosmonauts first took flight, back in the mid-1990's at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Their collective trajectory has been astonishing, as has his own journey in music. In addition to slaying with LETT, Deitch has collaborated with everybody from John Scofield to Pretty Lights to Redman & beyond. The GRAMMY-nominated artist is dropping new music left & right, even on quarantine. Deitch stays perpetually in motion, getting busy with his electro-soul duo Break Science, plus his own soul-jazz group Adam Deitch Quartet (featuring Ep.024 guest Wil Blades, and Lettuce's Ryan Zoidis (interviewed later in this program) & Eric Benny Bloom (Ep.017).      Transmitting from Denver, CO., Adam brings us into the Resonate recording and mixing sessions with super-producer Russ Elevado, as well as the band's writing and studio processes. Deitch discusses how LETT creative vibes coalesce, a general modus operandi for the current squadron, and highlights Elevado's dutiful influence. The drummer teases some possible dream collabs, with insightful backstories of how & why they might just happen. Adam gets into the "Funkin from Home" project, then pivots into his own production concepts, ideas, and compositions with regard to new electronic EP The Age of Imperfection. The dude waxes philosophic about sampling traditions, newer trends in the culture, then shows love to some young gunners pioneering the wave in that lo-fi hip-hop space. He tickles the fans with some clues about a new Nigel Hall solo album in the works. Maybe more Break Science acoustic? Towards the end, AD reveals his thoughts on the myriad of emotional elements ever-present in his rhythms & compositions. Universal language inherent in so much that he studies & loves. Always humble, forever a student, yet effortlessly the teacher. Fantastic, fulfilling, & deeply informative Adam Deitch interview! Here's to another ring around the sun, shogun!  Bobby & Denise Deitch were kind enough to make time for the podcast from their home/studio in Nyack, NY, just outside the city. Topics include: how the duo is sheltering-at-home, forthcoming album from Bobby Deitch Band titled Work With Whatcha Got, due May 15. Bobby Deitch breaks down his band, process, collaborators, song ideas, themes and intentions in rolling out this new record, which features Michealangelo Carubba & Shira Elias from Turkuaz (both guests on this show in the past), in addition to living legend George Porter Jr., Lettuce's Nigel Hall, among other special guests. Denise frequently chimes in with some funny tidbits on their shared creative energy and how the couple carefully builds a song from scratch. Naturally, I asked Adam's parents for some reflections on their son, his bands, their brotherhood, and his ever-prolific output. Get the latest on Bobby & Denise Deitch music HERE                 ENTER THE ZOID VOID: The final conversation is a profound exchange with my dear friend RYAN ZOIDIS, whom I reached super late on 4/20 night at his home in Portland, ME.. Zoidis is another LETT co-founder, & part of Adam Deitch Quartet, Break Science Live Band, Soulive's Shady Horns, critically-acclaimed Rustic Overtones, & Royal Hammer (Portland roots-reggae crew). Zoid gets personal how the relationship with his young daughter has evolved and transformed during quarantine. How the virtuoso saxman has improved as both musician & teacher. We revisit Russ Elevado's Voodoo touch, how the venerable producer magically elevated the LETT sessions with poignant palette cleansing of the highest order. Zoidis pulls the curtain back on a couple of favorite Resonate joints, floats dreamy ideas for a psychedelic improv/instrumental LETT release, and how the band's recent jaunt through Europe brought the squad even closer, vibrations onstage and off. Zoid kicks knowledge & drops science on natural wines, & introduces his new 'natty-wine' distribution company Benny & Zoid Selections, with bandmate Eric Benny Bloom. Meanwhile, what's up with a rumored wild collab project with Tycoon & Jesus Coomes!? We wrap up this sesh with a string of enlightening topics, beginning with Ryan's beautiful recollections & ruminations on his relationship with the Deitch family. Zoid offers parting thoughts on Still Bill, and seminal dancehall DJ Toyan's timeless classic LP How the West Was Won. Large Up Ryan Zoidis! Episode 024 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* welcomes Hammond B3 organ maestro WIL BLADES to the show for a lengthy conversation about his career, Bay Area music culture, saddling up to jazz and funk legends, the Adam Deitch Quartet, Amendola vs. Blades, and beyond. From bright eyed young cat in Chicago, to one of the rising stars in jazz and groove music, he's among the more impressive organ players in the culture today. Just a few days before he was moving to SoCal, Wil invited me over to his home in Berkeley, CA to have a spirited discussion, and was game to go deep about his own journey, the nuances of Hammond B3 organ, his passion for rare groove, the oral tradition of music, the history of the Boom Boom Room, and so much more. It was an honor to give Wil a chance to really let the people know who he is and how he got to be such a respected and celebrated musician, and to shed a lot of light on historical cats along the way. 7:00 - Wil Blades INTRO 12:45 - Amendola vs. Blades "Hi Lo"  15:00 - WIL'S INTERVIEW STARTS   1:33:30 "Art Bar" - Adam Deitch Quartet      We start the conversation in Wil's youth growing up near Chicago in Evanston, IN, learning both the drums and guitar as a youngster, taking ques from his older brothers. We also spend some time talking about how we discovered music as kids in the 90's, and how that is so markedly different from how Wil's teen children find their favorite artists today. From there, he takes us back to the late 90's, moving across the country to the Bay Area to join an Oakland jamband and attend college. Wil explains how SF and Oakland were very different back in those days, and how a particular college professor with a heavy resume and unique teaching style put him on to the importance of the oral tradition in music. At the time of the interview, Wil was preparing to move to Los Angeles after twenty years in the Bay. Wil gives us a colorful reflection on the music scene when he first arrived in the Bay Area, and for much of the convo he continues to tell the tale about how the music and culture would evolve over the next two decades. Wil was/remains also a huge part of the scene at renowned SF venue Boom Boom Room, a hotbed for blues when he arrived, but later evolving into the epicenter for all things NOLA and funky here in NorCal. Wil breaks down what it was like as John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom Room, and how talent buyer Alex/Xander Andreas's vision has helped the club to continue to flourish with the funk. Wil Blades has studied with some of true legends, and talks in great detail about his time with master organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, the late iconic funk/jazz drummer Idris Muhammed, an beloved late hollow-body guitarist Melvin Sparks. Wil has spent time with and performed alongside each of these giants, and it was riveting to hear how he organically and serendipitously came to connect with such luminaries, and what a thrill it was to hear of ho w each of them put him on game.  Wil makes sure to explore the essential particulars of organ/drums relationship. Two thirds of the way through the interview, we finally arrive at the Adam Deitch Quartet, Wil's fantastic project with the Lettuce/Break Science drummer wunderkind. We play a portion of the Blades-penned "Art Bar", then return to our dialogue. Wil retraces the steps on how that relationship came together, and gets into the magic that makes it all happen with Deitch, Eric Benny Bloom (trumpet) and Ryan Zoidis (sax). We discuss the making of their critically-acclaimed LP Egyptian Secrets, and reminisce on some classic AD4 gigs thru the years. Wil spends some time discussing his tremendous Amendola vs. Blades project with Bay Area groove merchant Scott Amendola, and their new LP Everybody Wins (Royal Potato Family), and their short West Coast tour. Wil Blades finishes out this phenomenal interview by talking about what's he excited about in moving down to LA after two decades as a prodigal son of the Bay.     Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week (2:04) "11th Hour" by DROPICAL, off his new EP Circling Out (Jumpsuit Records)     Email the show! B.Getz@upfulLIFE.com The Upful LIFE Podcast is available on iTunes! The Adam Deitch Quartet is a side project for one of the busiest drummers on the go. Aside from his work in Lettuce and Break Science, Deitch is always matching up with other players, and in fact producing music. We get into some of those details during our conversation, but suffice it to say, this dude is talented beyond measure. Perhaps the only thing that is bigger than his talent, is his appetite to play music that inspires him. Such is certainly the case with the Adam Deitch Quartet's debut record Egyptian Secrets. The Upful LIFE Podcast

Episode 019 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* welcomes our good friend LUKE QUARANTA to the show for another long and winding discussion, the last interview I conducted over two weeks in NOLA during Jazz Fest 50. I first encountered Luke and his band TOUBAB KREWE at Bear Creek Music and Arts Festival, at Spirit of Suwannee Music Park, around 2008 or 2009. Ever since, I've been a big fan of his percussion magic, and of course the amazing Toubab Krewe, who released their latest LP Stylo in 2018. Toubab Krewe is always very active over Jazz Fest, and the members play in a lot of other bands as well, not the least of which is Luke himself. Nonetheless we were able to track him down at the end of our stay in NOLA, and he more than delivered with a fascinating interview that was at once informative and entertaining. LUKE QUARANTA Intro>Interview at 11 Mins Quaranta takes us on a lengthy journey of his inspiring career as a drummer, starting with his humble beginnings growing up in New Rochelle, NY and spending some time in the Bronx as a young adult. He discusses formative influences on him as a youth, and how he developed an interest in the different drums he employs when creating with Toubab Krewe. Originally and primarily based in Asheville, NC, Toubab Krewe members came together in organic fashion, shared a passion for West African instrumentation and it's music, and a strong curiosity to make it something new and evolved of it, yet still in tribute to the traditions. Over time, Luke began working with Djembe, Congas, Dundun, Sangban, and KenKeni drums, and he explains how he came in contact with these instruments and where he picked up knowledge and understanding of these ancient drums along the way. From there, Quaranta describes the context of these instruments, music from Mali, Guinea, and the Ivory Coast, and how he/his bandmates internalized it, and then repurposed it as their own creation, with permission and a blessing. Quaranta discusses mentors and friends from his travels in West Africa. I asked him how he was able to get together and study at length with master drummers in Africa and in the US, to such depth and understanding. He describes several trips to Africa to live with and make music among the people in Mali, Guinea and Ivory Coast. Quaranta explains how they received blessings from the master teachers to take this music to the West; they were invited to live with them and their families, spending a month a time, on more than one occasion, to get a proper orientation from the musicians who know it best. We talk a bit about Toubab Krewe in the early days, and Luke appears to have a fond time reminiscing on the start of this band and it's journey in the early 00's, he takes great detail in the narrative of how the music was instilled in them in Africa, how they hosted master drummers here in the States and traveled extensively with them and traditional dance groups too, and how it all tied together with the embryonic phase of Toubab Krewe.   Luke explains how Toubab carries echoes of African greats like Ali Farka Toure, Orchestra Baobab and Salif Keita, but are ambassadors of the music into the future, they are not bound by the same traditions, and the Krewe was encouraged to play this music from their own hearts.  From there, Quaranta explains the etymology of the name "Toubab Krewe", how it pertains to non-Africans AND is a nod to the heartbeat of jazz music, New Orleans, where our conversation was taking place. Which brings us to the discussion around current Toubab Krewe drummer Terrence Houston, who's been George Porter Jr's drummer for several years and is very admired in the local community and around the US. Quaranta explains how Houston came into the Toubab picture, and how his inclusion has informed the sound of the band in their modern era, most specifically with regard to the material found on STYLO. We finish up the conversation on Toubab with discussing their newest LP STYLO, including the writing and recording processes for both studio and live efforts past and present. After a lengthy powwow on all things Toubab, we take some time to talk about the incredible Weedie Braimah, who appeared on Episode 004 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast*, a master djembefola whom Luke has studied with, collaborated with, and befriended for many years. They both live and work in New Orleans, and the two have united for some amazing musical endeavors, not the least of which is Weedie Braimah & the Hands of Time. Quaranta takes a few minutes to flesh out the concept for this group and explain the nature of their music in a language everybody can easily understand. This is a powerful collection of world music masters and it was quite informative to hear about what goes into making the Hands of Time happen. A little bit about Jazz Fest, and the myriad of side bands that come to life in NOLA that Weedie, Luke, and collaborators include Raja Kassis (Antibalas), and Terence Higgins (Mad Skillet, Ani DiFranco). We touch on Luke's role in some of those bands, such as Pirate's Choice, Wahala Boys, FuFu All-Stars, and MEGAWATT, a project spearheaded by Kassis that include's musicians from outside of NOLA, such as Lettuce's Adam Deitch, Break Science's Borahm Lee, among others. Blake Quick/Rachel Murray (THE QUICKENING) Interview at 1hr 11mins  After Luke's chat, we pivot to a NOLA-based buzz-band I'm very fond of, The Quickening, with a sweet 22-minute interview with founder/guitarist/vocalist Blake Quick and vocalist Rachel Murray. Their 2018 LP Begin Again made Upful LIFE's Favorite 18 Albums of 2018, and we've had our eyes and ears on The Quickening for a couple years now. Enjoy a peak behind the scenes of a Crescent City band cutting their teeth in that great environment, and some perspective on the hard work and grueling efforts it takes to make or break a band in this crowded, vibrant, and often cut-throat music scene. Both Quick and Murray also shout out some of their favorite underground NOLA musicians. Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week   Garage-a-Trois debut EP, vinyl only, "Mysteryfunk". Fog City Records, 1999. I just let the whole 24mins EP ride out. 3 full songs and a minute-long outro. This features the original lineup of Stanton Moore, Charlie Hunter, and Skerik, Produced by Dan Prothero. You may think you know these guys as players, or even GAT, but you likely haven't heard them quite like this. Almost an electronic album, Moore unfurling boukou trip-hop breakbeats and drum & bass jungle riddims, underneath the kaleidoscopic eccentricities of Hunter and Skerik in full bloom. Jeff is a rising star in the Denver music scene, and traces his musical and personal roots back to the District of Columbia. We took a solid ninety minutes to chop it up about a number of salient topics that ran the gamut and it was a thoroughly enjoyable conversation that I think will resonate with the Upful LIFE listeners.     We begin by discussing the Washington D.C. music scene and the successful, trendsetting new venue there The Anthem, spiralling out into a few directions from there. His earliest memories of Pink Floyd hitting his ears, and the music that first reached him deep inside. Topics covered include his roots as a thorough study of iconic jazz drummers from the late 50's through the early 70's, such as Billy Higgins, Tony Williams, Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy Cobham, and Max Roach. He touches on themes and concepts native to each of their styles, and how those cats changed, and basically shaped, the game for decades to come. We also touch on his time at the University of Indiana as a double major, whether or not he wanted to try out for The Disco Biscuits, and his thoughts on jazz jamming verses jamband jamming. Jeff then takes a deep dive on a topic that will resonate with anybody who listens in, the relationship he had with his late brother Nicholas, who died in 2011, after a lengthy illness. Jeff details how his music career intersected with the last months of his brother's life, the cosmic Virgo/Sagittarius connections within it all, how his brother empowered him to forge onward as a musician and an artist. He recalls in emotional detail spending days at Sloan Kettering in NYC with Nicholas and then chasing John Zorn, Adam Deitch, hanging at The Stone, and the experiencing the downtown scene after dark. It was during this time that the seeds were being sewn for Jeff to begin playing with Thievery Corporation.   Jeff's late brother Nicholas Franca Jeff brings us all the way back to Eighteenth Street Lounge music in D.C. and how stints producing records with Funk Ark and touring with See-I laid the foundation for his role as Thievery Corporation's touring drummer. Franca explains the roots of Thievery in D.C. culture, and around the world, and how that heritage has taken shape over two decades. Jeff continues by meticulously breaking down his role playing live drums in an electronic music outfit, and it's fascinating to hear him unspool it all, the nuts and bolts of how Rob Garza, Eric Hilton and company have evolved their live sets into a true live band performance, without sacrificing any of the thump. We get a thorough introduction to Congo Sanchez, Jeff's fantastic side-project that mixes it up in mysterious styles of world electro and future dancehall. He recalls some humorous road stories and a comical debut at Electric Forest 2012, before opening up a bit about the cultural and thematic concepts inherent in the Congo Sanchez trio.  All that plus his presence on Eddie Roberts' Color Red label in Denver, and why the music scene there is different then anywhere else in the States today. Having a partner as a tour manager, why the grind of touring is an authentic and essential element to making honest art. And a tribute to true East Coast OG, the late great Ryan Dewitt. Thievery Corporation on the road in 2015   We follow that up with another interview from the Emerald Cup cannabis event in Northern California, in early December. This time we chat it up with Moe Angelo and Pat Anglin of the immersive art installation Because of the Lotus, which is a festival favorite and a beloved part of the fabric of Spirit of Suwannee Music Park, which coincidentally just announced another fantastic event Suwannee Rising, April 4-6.       The *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week* is a classic golden-era hip-hop jam from twenty-three years ago: Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers: Crooklyn Dodgers 95 featuring Chubb Rock, Masta Ace, and Jeru the Damaja, with DJ Premier production. Among my all-time favorite hip-hop jams. This is history. Word to fat asses and cases of Heineken!     The Upful LIFE Podcast is available on iTunes! When we trawl through the new releases every Friday, it’s always shocking to hear that almost all producers make the same mistake with their drums. So this video is designed to put an end to that, once and for all. But first… A quick announcement. A huge Thank You to everyone for slamming our website during our sale last weekend. This actually broke our online store, but it’s all fixed and upgraded now, and to apologise for the inconvenience, we’ve extended our sale till the end of this weekend. So if you want 40% off everything on our website, then head on over to Online Course and Books + PDFs. But first… tea! Hello revolutionaries, we are Kate Harmony and Ray Harmony (AKA Revolution Harmony), and welcome to Hack Music Theory. We help you make great music that stands out, so you can get discovered! If that sounds useful to you, then subscribe to our YouTube channel and hit that bell to get notified every Saturday, when we publish our new video. Alright, it’s time to open your DAW to hack music theory. THEORYIn Tatran’s new album “Foresee” that just dropped yesterday, Dan Mayo (who’s one of our favourite drummers!) brings the groove BIG time, reminding us that humans do it best! Now, while it’s impossible to replace a great drummer with a computer, it is possible to learn their hacks and use them in our MIDI drums. And that brings us to the No.1 mistake almost all producers make with their drums: They learn how to program them from other producers (and their MIDI drums), instead of learning from the only true source, real live drummers. So if you wanna program better drums, learn from great drummers! How? We’ll reveal that next... Set-UpWe’re using Tatran’s new track “Arba” as the inspiration for this video, and what you see on the screen right now is a summarised version of Dan’s opening drum groove. So, start by setting up two bars of 4/4, with your grid set to 1/16 notes, and your tempo set to 86 BPM. Step 1 - What to PlayNow, there’s a lot we can learn from a great drummer like Dan Mayo, so for this video, let’s just focus on one thing: Depth. So, Dan is playing a regular backbeat snare on beat 2 and beat 4. And that is actually about as deep as many producers would go with their snare pattern, but Dan adds another layer to his groove by playing three more snare accents in each bar. Then he adds a third layer to his snares, by playing ghost notes. Ghost notes are super soft snare hits, which add depth and texture to a groove. And finally, he plays a tom on beat 4 of each bar, which boosts the snare on that beat, making it sound bigger than the snare on beat 2. And with that, Dan has created four layers on his snare drum alone. That’s a lot of depth! Step 2 - How to PlayRight, now that you’ve programmed what you wanna play, it’s time to program how you wanna play it. This involves changing each note’s velocity (which is how hard it’s hit), as that creates even more depth. Also, depending on what genre you’re working in, you could move the notes slightly off the grid for a more human feel. If you want an urgent feel, then move them a fraction before the beat. And if you want a chill vibe, move them a fraction after the beat (like we did with ours). Now, back to velocity. As an example of this, when a drummer plays two 1/16 note kicks in a row, their foot can’t kick the second note as hard as the first note*, so pull the velocity down on that second note. And another cool velocity hack is to change every single note individually, as that way each note has a slightly different velocity, which is how a drummer would play it. *Good drummers can obviously do this, it’s just an example! Step 3 - Watch & LearnConveniently, Dan Mayo actually has a YouTube channel, so head on over there to watch and learn! And if you wanna check out another one of our favourite drummers, watch Adam Deitch, who’s the drummer in Lettuce and Break Science. We’ll link to both of these drummers in the description below, so go and watch them play. And once you’ve found a couple favourite videos, slow them down, and program the MIDI for what they’re playing. Then, use those drum hacks creatively in your own music. Doing this will make your drums better than 99% of other producers’ beats. Guaranteed! Hack Music Theory
Most Producers Make This Mistake...

Hack Music Theory

Guaranteed! DRUMMERS►Dan Mayo - Tatran►Adam Deitch - Lettuce, Break Science NEXTRight, now that you’ve got one section down, how do you write more sections for it, and then, how do you transition between those sections, and turn 'em into a song? Great questions, and if this is something you need help with, then check out our cutting-edge online apprenticeship course, where you’ll literally learn every step of the music making process, and most importantly, you’ll learn how to finish your songs! You’ll also gain access to our Private Network, which is a safe online space (i.e. social media platform) exclusively for our 500+ apprentices from 50+ countries. Seth and Rob call Adam Deitch's father Bobby to discuss his own musical history as it relates to his accomplished son. We learn about how he and his one Uncle were a huge influence, and how in his case, the teacher became the student. They then chat with Adam and compare and contrast his work with Break Science and Lettuce, and they even touch upon new things on which his jazz quartet is working. He speaks of how hip-hop, particularly Redman and Method Man, helped him to develop his style as a drummer and as a producer. We get a little window into his creative process and he speaks of the challenges and rewards of playing with Lettuce. Adam explains how Galactic and Greyboy Allstars paved the way for Lettuce's success and then gets into the "Wayback Machine" to discuss his days learning about music in his boyhood home where the television was secondary to the stereo, and how his parents' enthusiasm for music rubbed off on him. He speaks of his first rock n roll experience seeing Living Color live. Then Adam discusses many of the talented people he met at the Berklee School of Music where he met many people with whom he still plays today. He speaks about how he "owes 10% of his career" to Eric Krasno as Kras not only do we learn that he landed Lettuce their initial gigs, but we also find out that he facilitated their initial meeting with John Scofield. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner, with this episode produced by both he and Seth Weiner, and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. www.joshthaneproductions.com www.wonderdogsounds.com wTnS is a proud sponsor of the Osiris Podcast Network.
