Welcome to Episode #143 of the Blue-in-Green:PODCAST which this week sees Imran connect with singer, songwriter and producer, Zola Marcelle. Following a string of standalone single and EP releases dating back to 2018, the multi-faceted Zola Marcelle releases her debut full-length album entitled 'Home' unveiled through the hallowed walls of London's Jazz Re:freshed. Adding her name to the revered Jazz Re:freshed lineage which includes Kaidi Tatham, Nubya Garcia and Richard Spaven, Zola's exceptional credentials to date have seen past collaborations alongside Daniel Casimir and Ashley Henry as well as having secured coveted touring duties alongside Myele Manzanza. 'Home' serves as an inspired depiction of Zola's creative peak to date - a fascinating and compelling portrayal of an artist examining the concept of "home" as an individual as well as an ideology within a greater tapestry of culture and heritage. We're so appreciative of Zola's time for this conversation which sees us delve into her career to date, the ideas and inspirations that brought 'Home' to fruition, the album's incredible supporting cast including Lewis Moody and Rudi Creswick, Jazz Re:freshed and London's thriving jazz landscape. This week's episode is nothing but good vibes. We've got Carson Gant aka @oneupdrumvids on the show. Carson's ability to recreate classic loops and drum breaks on the acoustic kit is unmatched, but not so much in the vein of Jojo Mayer, Adam Betts, or Richard Spaven (which I know I've described in a similar way), Carson focused more on the slower, hip-hop style grooves that might SEEM a little more approachable in comparison to the drummers I just mentioned, but ohhhhh no. Believe me, there are a lot of nuances within a groove that are only exposed at a slower tempo…at least in comparison to drum n bass. This has been a long time coming because Carson has been a busy little Canadian bee launching a website providing different take on the classic loop library system called oneupdrumvids.com which we also talk about during the show. Please enjoy my conversation with Carson Gant on all things groove and the top 5 influences that made him into the drummer he is today. Richard Spaven is one of the most exciting drummers in the scene today, with a very distinct and signature sound that's landed him gigs across the jazz, soul and other genres with big artists. He's a Yamaha & Meinl Artist, both companies allow for Spaven's unique sound to shine through no matter who he plays with. He is incredibly down to earth and humble, this is a must-listen for all fans of him. This week's guest is Richard “Crave The Spave” Spaven. He's been one of the most requested names as of late and ohhhhhh what a treat it was! Having played with Jose James, Flying Lotus, Gang Star, Cinematic Orchestra, Jameszoo (which I was hipped to via Ian Maciak on HIS episode) and many more, Richard's career as a sideman alone is enough to put him in the legend category, but it's his solo ventures that really showcase his unique ability to be a drummer's drummer without being too drummy. These are, of course, all technical terms, but he respects both the craft and the audience at all times. His ability to finagle through complex patterns while maintaining a conscious level of listenability is second to none. He's a proper English gentlemen and, in this episode, he dissects the 5 biggest influences that made him into the drummer he is today. Hi everyone, I hope all is well. This is the long awaited followup to the interview I did back in March. We chatted about the many roles of the modern musician/artist. His relationship with two drummers, Richard Spaven and Luke Flowers. This was done just before stricter lockdown rules came in for Greater Manchester. We managed to do this face to face in Stuart's back garden and it was a bit chilly. I've also included a few music clips in this episode. We make reference to them in the chat. Hope you enjoy and keep safe.

New releases reviewed this week come courtesy of Marilyn Manson, The Pineapple Thief, Uniform, a collaboration between Richard Spaven and Sandunes and Ihsahn whilst Broken Records takes a look at Van Halen's over-blown, over-stuffed, over-the-hill 11th album, confusingly titled III. Speaking of overuse of words that are prefixed by the word 'over', Remfry becomes over-excited by the fact that the first chord change in 7 years occurred during the performance of John Cage's As Slow As Possible, a piece of music being performed in a church in Germany over a period of 639 years. He needs to get out more. Steve sobers him up with the news of Milk Teeth's demise and breaking news as we went to record that Creeper drummer Dan Bratton has left the band. There is also devastating news as Holy Roar records, a label we've historically championed on the show, has dissolved due to disturbing and distressing rape allegations that have been made against the label's founder. Remfry and Steve would like to reiterate that any form of sexual assault is unacceptable and their deepest sympathies go out to those who have had the courage to speak out. Some important links for those who have suffered or know anyone who has suffered at the hands of sexual abuse: https://www.mind.org.uk/need-urgent-help/using-this-toolhttps://rapecrisis.org.uk/get-help/https://www.victimsupport.org.uk/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

What's up you Groovi humans? This week I wanted to talk about the newness in my life and how I've been adapting and dealing with all the changes that this world has brought us in the past few months. And how it definitely won't be the last time we have to deal with stressful situations caused by unsettling change. Besides that, you get to hear a little snippet of a new jam that I've been working on with my roommate and bass player, Thomas "Chops" Hannum. Check out the transcription and breakdown I did of Richard Spaven below! How To Play Drums More Like Richard Spaven: Transcription Breakdown
In this week's episode of In The Groove, I talk about how reading the book "Atomic Habits" has steadily changed the person I am today over the past 6-7 months. Forming habits, like anything else, takes work and discipline. But like anything hard, it's usually worth it in the end. I also share an update on (and play a snippet of) the Richard Spaven transcription I've been talking about for several episodes as well as a polyrhythmic idea I wanted to share. In this week's episode of In The Groove I recap the Snoop Dogg transcription I finished last week, talk about what I'm practicing this week (some Richard Spaven), and then dive into the importance of defining your goals and values in order to create a roadmap to achieve them. I even get a little vulnerable and share my "personal manifesto" of values and how I want to live my life. Hi everyone. I hope you're doing OK at the moment. I had a week off podcasting and I'm returning this week with a real treat for you all. This is a long awaited podcast that Stuart and I had chatted about doing a while ago. We talk about the old days back when we met in the late 1990's. We talk about some drummers that have influenced him as a musician. Myke Wilson, Luke Flowers and Richard Spaven. If you don't know Stuart, you should check him out. He's a truly unique voice in the UK music scene and a massively talented dude. Go and check out his biog at http://stuartmccallum.com or follow him on social media @stuartmaccallumguitar on instagram. Keep well and stay safe everyone.

In this episode, we are speaking with the awesome Richard Spaven about a lot of juicy subjects, some of which are my favorite. We go over “The List” (creativity, time keeping, endurance, independence, coordination, groove, chops, technique), we talk about "The Zone", which Richard speaks passionately about, and we go deep into his creative process. We also reflect on Richard’s work, and in particular on "Spaven's 5ive", his first, original recording and my favorite of his. We close with a conversation about how he feels once an album has been created. Drumeo Gab’s Socials Instagram Facebook Drumeo’s Socials Instagram Facebook YouTube Website

UK based drummer Richard Spaven has been constantly making a name for himself in what I call “both sides of the business” – the drumming business and the music business. Separate but equal, Spaven’s career in the world of hip hop, electronic, jazz, etc and in drum clinics and masterclasses are both impressive. I remember picking up Robert Glasper's In My Element and being surprised to hear the Hip Hop, soul and elements of other genres dispersed throughout the album. Although, already a Jazz fan, I was elated at hearing my generation's music represented in an art form that was previously, largely guarded from exploration and breaking form. It seems from that moment until now, as the 2010s come to a close, Jazz has reversed its position and also permeated itself into the prevalent genres of music. Glasper aside, Jazz musicians have become the new rock stars it seems - Common even took Jazz musicians (Glasper, Karriem Riggins, Keyon Harrold, Derrick Hodge, & Elena Pinderhughes) to perform at the White House. The soundtrack to Kendrick Lamar's critically acclaimed album, To Pimp A Butterfly was largely composed and performed by the West Coast Get Down, and some of your favorite emcees can't perform without cats like Robert “Sput” Searight, Nate Smith & Maurice Brown. To the delight of many 80s babies, bassist Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner, gathered Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins for Show You the Way from his 2017 masterpiece, Drunk. The Grammy award winning bassist has worked with everyone from Badu and Bilal to Jhene Aiko and Suicidal Tendencies. The new lions are younger and influenced more by the sounds of Dilla and Hip Hop than Davis and Be Bop. Two sides of the same coin, I suppose because the music must grow or remain stagnant and give credence to the frequently espoused sentiment, "Jazz is Dead" which we know to be untrue. This mix could scarcely contain all the artists I wanted to include, but it's a nice jumping off point to discover a lot of great, current musicians that will strengthen or create a passion for America's original art form, Jazz. Episode #10 starts off with some lush, ambient music from Wilson Tanner. There's some amazing vocal performances from James Blake feat. Frank Ocean, Matt Corby & Ella Haber. A timeless sounding soul cut from the new BADBADNOTGOOD album feat. Future Islands front-man, Sam Herring. Richard Spaven. The show wouldn't be complete without the new Mala and one of the standout cuts from Radiohead's new album. I've got the hip-hop heads covered with new De La Soul and Miles Davis & Robert Glasper feat. Phonte. There's r&b/soul from Melbourne's Silentjay X Jace XL and the UK's Aaron Taylor. Ending the show off with some dance-floor groovers courtesy of Lone, K15, Steve Spacek & Osunlade + some afro rhythms from The Kondi Band, The Jagger Botchway Group & Philou Louzolo. This show ended up being broadcast twice as I had to reluctantly abandon last Sunday's show as something crucial and even closer to my heart needed my attention, so it went out again. I'd recorded this one at Forge Towers before I took a few days out on family business, so I thought It might sound pretty stale by the time I got round to listening back. But as I've edited now I've really enjoyed the experience. Nothing exceptional here, just regular Cosmic Jam business, spiced with a couple of all time favourites along the way. A first half hour dominated by the new grooves of Bill Laurance and Hiatus Coyote. Then we revive some Ed Motta, stirring great memories of when he spent some time in London hanging out. There's a Tania Maria tune which is chock full of all her trademark samba fuelled funkiness, some Latin funk from Roland Vasquez and souuuul from Leroy Hutson, and (Xian) flavour from James Vincent, (awesome outro!) and that tune about L.A. that somehow just occupies it's own territory. Second hour new jazzambience from Jessica Lauren and Richard Spaven, before that soulful feeling comes again, shaken and stirred through tunes by Linda Tillery, Gloria Jay, AWB and Gil... ( a happy one that always makes me smile!) Dancing all the way home with boogie and disco to uplift even the most tired and troubled soul. And yes.... "Starlette" is really right up there for me in the echelon of "works of utter genius"!! I'm back with a whole new scheme of things, or at least some different tunes, next week.
