    Standing Up to POTS with Dr. Cathy Pederson

    This week Isabela sits down with Dr. Cathy Pederson, a Professor of Biology at Wittenberg University and founder of Standing Up To POTS, a non-profit working to improve the quality of life for people living with POTS.  Standing Up to POTS was founded by Dr. Cathy Pederson in 2014 after her daughter was diagnosed with POTS.  Standing Up to POTS was created to generate a community who can support each other while pushing forward understanding of POTS.  Dr. Pederson earned her Ph.D. in Physiology and Neurobiology from Rutgers in 1996, and has dedicated all of her professional research efforts to POTS, chronic illness, and quality of life since her daughter's illness.  In this episode, Cathy and Isabela share the basics of what POTS is, how it's impacted Isabela's life over the last decade, and the two main symptoms that make life hard for Isabela.     The Amateur Activist is joined by author, media commentator, blogger, and advocate for women and girls - Melinda Tankard Reist. Melinda is best known for her work addressing sexualisation, objectification, the harms of pornography, sexual exploitation, trafficking and violence against women. She recently authored her 7th book, He Chose P*rn Over Me. She is also one of the founders of the grassroots campaigning movement Collective Shout: for a world free of sexploitation. Collective Shout names and shames corporations, advertisers, and marketers who objectify women and sexualise girls to sell products & services. In this episode, Melinda and Isabela talk about the effects of pornography on young people, the lie that the porn industry sells to young women in particular about sexual liberation and empowerment, and why we as amateur activists should care about this issue at all. This episode does discuss sensitive material regarding the effects of porn on relationships and the effect is has on children as young as Year 4 who are effected by the porn they watch and the pornified culture they are growing up in.     This week Isabela is joined by Elise Nesper. Elise has completed her Bachelor of Theology majoring in Biblical Studies with a language specialisation. She has also completed her Masters of Theology majoring in Biblical Studies with her thesis on the Gospel of John. Earlier in 2022, Elise created Speakeasy Theology, an online sacred and silly place for the thoughts that almost feel like blasphemy. In this "sacred and silly place" Elise has facilitated really interesting conversation while also poking at traditional thought. Elise and Isabela get together this week to talk about the top topics their followers wanted to hear an episode about - purity culture and the future of the church. Elise utilises her experience and knowledge of biblical study to explain how "purity" functions in the Old and New Testament within its context.
