"It's Shark Week!" "Ugh, I'm on the rag." "A visit from Aunt Flo." For as long as women have been menstruating, we've come up with creative ways to talk about it — without sounding like we're talking about it. Enough already! We're fighting the stigma with education in this episode of the Think Tank of Three podcast, talking with Lysne Tait, co-founder of a nonprofit called Helping Women Period.
In this episode, we have a repeat conversation with Lysne Tait who we interviewed last year. We felt that due to all of the publicity around the article in Oprah's Magazine and the legislation she helped spearhead there was a lot to talk about since the beginning of the year. So join us for that as well as her journey into solo executive director leadership over the past couple of years. Helping Women Period's Mission is to provide no cost menstrual products those experiencing homeless or low-income disparity. Dr. Kirsten Lysne of Moxie, Inc. joins Tom to discuss her thoughts on the incredible difficulties with which families are struggling now when they already faced daunting challenges before COVID-19. She identifies good (appropriate) gatekeeping, bad (maladaptive) gatekeeping and how family law professionals can think about gatekeeping in light of COVID-19.
Dr. Kirsten Lysne, parenting coach and mediator, with Moxie, Inc., joins Tom to discuss how she and other professionals in her firm are delivering services in this time of social distancing. In addition, she discusses how clients are handling the new approaches.
After Lysne Tait read an article in Huffington Post about low income and homeless women not having access to products, she and her friend decided to host a breakfast to raise money to help purchase them for a local organization. When 100 people responded, she realized there was a great need and interest, which she turned into her non-profit Helping Women Period. They provide menstrual products for over 100 charities in the mid-Michigan area. On this episode, she shares startling facts, along with ways people can get more involved in helping in their own community.

ENJOY! www.ingridviklysne.com @ingridviklysne

She felt unworthy. Shame, combined with lack of belonging, began to take over her life. A decision had to be made. It was either to find a way to overcome the obstacles in front of her or suffer for the rest of her life. As most of us can relate, it is moments like these that define who we are. Moments, filled with tragedy and pain that make us stop what we're doing and reflect. For Holly Lysne, an adoptee from the Baby Scoop Era and avid journaler, the healing process was no different. She said, “I decided to fight back. I was not going to let that sense of shame win.” I asked, “How did you do it?” She said, “Mindfulness.” A practice through which you face your deepest and darkest emotions. A practice that will take you on a journey as you seek answers to questions such as, “What are my feelings? What are my emotions? And where do they stem from?” A practice that has helped Holly develop a different perspective on suffering and pain. A perspective, which made her realize that pain and suffering are temporary. Joseph Campbell, renowned storyteller and interpreter of the mythological, has stated about Rites of Passage, “Nature initiates women and society initiates men”. What he means is that women learn through their bodies about being women (menses, childbirth, menopause) and men have to be initiated through the culture. But we have largely forgotten about meaningful rites for boys. Too many men are grown boys until they come to a point in their lives where they must grow up, either through the military, the birth of a child, or some other initiatory activity, like hunting, fishing, or an actual initiation. Women also need to be acknowledged for being who they are, as mothers and in the culture at large. Acknowledgement of being, is one of the most important things we can do for each other, especially the children. In my family, we do just that! We acknowledge each child coming up with a ceremony when they turn 13. Originally inspired by a Bar mitzvah and African tribal rites, I created a secular/spiritual ceremony with the help and permission of my sister Kisti and her husband Sid. We call it the Blue Heron Ceremony. It has been in our family since 1982, when Lysne, my niece, turned 13. I carved a bird, a fledgling Heron taking off from it’s perch just for the occasion. Now, a grown woman with her own children, she and her husband Craig, are offering the ceremony to their children. During a summer vacation we gathered in Door County, Wisconsin, we honor another child of the family. Listen to the family describe the ceremony and the effect of it on their lives over the years and may it inspire your family to do something similar.
