In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah are joined by the fiercely insightful Emma McLean, founder of Works for Everyone, who’s on a mission to dismantle the motherhood penalty and reimagine how work and family can coexist. Emma brings 25+ years of corporate experience and the lived reality of parenting and solo-parenting three children while navigating a system that quietly punishes caregivers, especially women. Emma talks about how workplaces edge mothers out of leadership, how returning parents get offered ‘pity roles’, and why the most important career decision you’ll ever make is who you partner with, and how the dynamics at home directly affect your confidence, ambition, and financial future. The girls explore why resentment builds when one parent gets to stay late at work while the other carries the mental load of school lunches, daycare hours, and being the default caregiver, and how partners can start having the brave, messy conversations to find better balance. If you’ve ever felt your career got parked or stuck in reverse when you had kids, or, this is something you want to avoid, this episode is a call to action for parents, partners, and employers. It’s not just about helping mums, it’s about building a system that actually works for everyone.About EmmaEmma Mclean is a mum of three and founder of Works for Everyone, a professional development business that partners with NZ's leading corporates to help them retain and grow their working parent talent. She does this through innovative leadership programmes, executive coaching and keynote speaking. She founded her business in 2019 following a 20-year career in corporate strategy where she experienced first-hand how hard it was to have a career and a family. As an impatient optimist when it comes to system change, she launched her successful podcast ‘How to Smash the Motherhood Penalty’ in 2023 where she talks to humans who are actively working to change the system that creates financial penalties that only mothers pay. In 2024 she launched the first NZ Part Time Power List – to shine a light on those senior roles in NZ that are career building, not side stepping. In this mini-episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah revisit their conversation with world-renowned naturopathic doctor and women’s health expert Dr Lara Briden when they chatted all things women’s hormones. Lara reframes the way we think about perimenopause. So many women approach their late 30s and 40s with a quiet sense of dread, unsure of what’s coming or how to prepare for it. But as Lara explains, perimenopause isn’t something to fear, but something to understand. She helps us see that this season of hormonal change doesn’t mean we’re broken, and rather than an indication of aging, it’s a hormonal event — a second puberty. If anything, it’s an invitation to reconnect with our bodies and take back the narrative. In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah eventually catch up amongst cruising through the everyday chaos of parenting, partnerships, and parasites. What’s a little puking between friends? Hannah introduces her new ‘winter wife’, a Hungarian wonder woman sent directly from heaven who’s transformed her life with folded laundry, meal prep, and home-cooked lunches. Meanwhile, Matty’s (year-round) husband, Art, gets a shout-out for his superior performance managing the parenting load while Matty’s at work. He might be missing his birthday massage, but he could be in line for an at-home Pilates session ... Matty’s moved into her new house while juggling conferences, radio awards, and imposter syndrome. Hannah rectifies a few love life details in ‘Corrections Corner’, and recaps the sobering realities of her signature ‘Lifecycle of Modern Dating’ graph. A few listener stories cover the length and breadth of 3 am questions about the crucifixion, cat-induced eye parasites, and hope for inclusive fertility journeys. In this mini-episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah revisit an incredible conversation with NZ’s beloved media personality, Toni Street, as she shares the heartbreak and hidden strength behind her family’s tragic story of loss. Toni opens up about the unimaginable grief her parents endured, losing three children, and the quiet ways that grief wove through her own childhood and upbringing. Toni reflects on how growing up in the shadow of loss shaped her family’s way of coping, communicating, and parenting. She talks about what it was like to revisit these memories while writing her book Lost and Found, and how even now, the pain still sits close to the surface. This conversation also touches on how to show up for someone who is grieving. Toni shares the moments that meant the most, the simple texts, turning up at funerals, being present, and why it’s okay if we don’t always get it right. Follow Toni on Instagram at @tonimstreet. In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah are joined once again by returning guest and fan fav, sex and relationships therapist, Jo Robertson, this time to talk about the very real dangers children are facing online. Content Warning: This episode contains discussions around child grooming and online sexual exploitation. Listener discretion is advised. Please listen with care for yourself and others around you. With nearly two decades of professional experience in sexual health, child development, and trauma, Jo brings deep expertise to the table as she breaks down the alarming trends in online harm. From predatory contact on social media platforms to the rise of self-generated sexual content among children, Jo reveals what’s really happening when kids are left to their own devices. She shares her insights from working with the Before 16 campaign, which is lobbying to raise the legal age of social media access from 13 to 16. Jo explains why current laws and parental controls aren't enough, why big tech isn’t keeping pace with predators, and how New Zealand is falling far behind other nations in digital safety policy. But this episode isn’t just about problems, it’s packed with practical advice. Jo outlines how to start tricky but essential conversations with children, and how parents can use both control and influence to keep their kids safe in the digital world. In this mini-episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah revisit one of our most powerful conversations with author and researcher Kasey Edwards, the co-author of the books 'Raising Girls Who Like Themselves', and, 'Bringing up Boys who Like Themselves'. Kasey discusses what it really means to raise emotionally resilient boys in today’s world. Kasey challenges the long-held idea that boys need to be ‘tough’ to survive, and suggests that resilience comes from helping boys develop emotional bravery. She explains how ‘toughness’ often leads to fragility, not strength, and why helping our boys feel, name, and carry their emotions is the key to raising good men. This is a must-listen for anyone raising boys who want to grow into confident, connected, emotionally intelligent men. In this chaotic episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah come in hot (and festering) with gripping chat about the questionable states of their drink bottles and the confusing double standards of various hygiene rules. Matilda gets hit on in a hotel lift and Hannah reveals how successful influencing has her with the facial skin of and infant. There’s full analysis of Apple Watch data she’s collected while having midday “Pilates” in committed example of ‘doin’ it for the pod’. They unpack Kris Jenner’s impossibly smooth features and wonder where it ends ... and begins ... Then pay a visit to the cast of characters reading for parts in Matty’s head. Lastly, Hannah’s sage parenting advice gets turned around to bite her in the olfactory nerves. It’s unhinged, far too revealing, and full of giggles. Bon appetite! In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah speak with Theophila Pratt, a Gloriavale cult survivor, qualified paediatric occupational therapist, author, and fierce advocate for freedom and healing. Theo, formerly known as Honey Faithful, grew up in Gloriavale, an isolated and highly controlled Christian community on the West Coast. At 18, she was cast out after challenging the regime, with nothing but a suitcase, a ticket to Auckland, and little understanding of how the outside world worked.TRIGGER WARNING: This episode includes discussion of religious trauma, psychological abuse, coercive control, childhood neglect, and sexual abuse. While we approach these topics with care and sensitivity, some content may be distressing for listeners. Please take care while listening and prioritise your wellbeing. Theo shares what life inside Gloriavale was really like — from the oppressive rules that haunted every moment, to the calculated psychological control that deprived people of their individual identities, especially for girls and women. Theo talks about the subtle acts of rebellion that sparked her path to freedom, what it took to start again from scratch, and how she’s now helping others do the same. Theo reflects on trauma, therapy, rage, spirituality, and walking a determined road to self-trust and reclaiming her voice and identity. Her memoir, ‘Unveiled: A Story of Surviving Gloriavale’ exposes the realities of life inside the cult and offers hope to those seeking freedom from high-control environments. In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah welcome back one of their most-loved guests, Georgia Vavasour, to take us deep into the cosmic world of Vedic astrology — or Jyotish, the ‘science of light’. If you’ve ever wondered what the exact time of your birth might reveal about your life’s blueprint — your strengths, your ‘stuckness’, your timing, your relationships, and even your parenting, this one’s here to enlighten. Georgia, one of the world’s most experienced Vedic meditation teachers, has added Jyotish to her toolkit, and the way she deciphers charts is a lot less woo-woo and a lot more practical wisdom. They explore what your birth chart can reveal about your soul’s journey, why some life phases feel like a slog and others feel effortless, and how we can align ourselves with planetary energy instead of constantly swimming against the tide. She also shows us how our children’s charts can reveal exactly what they need from us, emotionally, energetically, and spiritually, and why this knowledge can be an absolute game-changer in how we show up as parents. They obviously talk dating and if it’s okay to finagle someone’s birth time out of them ... And, Matty has her chart read live on air (for the very first time), and we find out why she and Hannah are so freakishly well matched as ‘podcast partners’. In this mini-episode of Untidy, Steph Campbell shares her extraordinary journey to heal her daughter’s extreme food intolerances. Steph found herself facing a stark reality: she would have to live indefinitely on only three foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner — lamb, leeks and green beans. Even the smallest mistake, as she breastfed her baby daughter, sent them to hospital. Desperate for a solution when no one else could help, Steph discovered the power of a supportive community of mums, and gut healing through anaerobic fermentation — and within just weeks, everything changed. Off the back of Steph’s life-changing discovery, she founded Clover Ferments, a company born from a mother’s love, sheer grit and determination! Steph’s story is filled with hope for anyone struggling with allergies, gut issues, or feeling let down by the traditional system. In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah are joined by internationally renowned exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist Dr Stacy Sims — a trailblazer on a mission to revolutionise how women train, eat, and perform. Known for her viral TED Talk “Women Are Not Small Men”, bestselling book Roar, and over 100 peer-reviewed papers, Stacy has dedicated her career to closing the gender gap in sports science. In this conversation, she dives into the often-overlooked physiological and emotional challenges girls face during puberty — challenges that are too often misunderstood or ignored, causing many to lose confidence and drop out of sport. With her new course NEXT GEN, Stacy is focused on educating coaches and parents to better support developing girls. She explores how puberty impacts performance, confidence, and injury risk, and why it’s crucial to rethink how we train and talk to our daughters. From the damaging effects of language like “girl pushups” and “sissy squats,” to the ripple effects of diet culture and uniform design, Stacy highlights the changes we need to make — and how to do it. This episode is a rallying cry to shift the culture around girls’ health, sport, and self-image — and to give them the tools, language, and support they deserve. In this episode of Untidy, Hannah is joined by fellow neuro-spicy, and guest co-host, Alice Soper. Alice is a multi-award-winning sports broadcaster, co-host of the ‘Full Credit’ podcast, women’s rugby obsessive, and unfiltered advocate responding to a broad spectrum of the world’s f*ckery. With Matilda away wrangling the most feral life admin, Alice takes the mic for an unmoderated kōrero about identity, queerness, relationships, and throwing out outdated life scripts. Together, Hannah and Alice unpack the tyranny of gender expectations, the temptation of dating a ‘broject’, and how to recover from being a ‘Band-Aid Bitch’. They explore the parallels between coming out and getting divorced, and each share their personal experiences of neurodivergence, ADHD, overstimulation, and the freedom that comes with being able to remove the mask. And, if you’ve ever felt on the sidelines of sport, Alice makes the most compelling case for why this is the year to get behind women’s rugby. The Black Ferns are gearing up to defend their World Cup title, and if Alice can’t get you excited, no one can. In this episode of Untidy, Hannah takes Matty to the edge of her seat with a confession about a brief dalliance with a questionable side-hustle. There is more fowl behaviour in the neighbourhood which prompts activity on the community Facebook page for Hannah who’s triangulating the offending cock. Matty decides to release her shame around chasing the social elevation of becoming a recidivist rising star in her own online community; and, within the Untidy whānau, there’s a pressing issue raised about pubic hair presentation. The girls discuss if the bush is back! Hannah squirms her way through a promised dating update and Matty shares her quandary over how to tackle workplace fashion, if you should hug your colleagues, and if a millennial can navigate a Gen Z-dominated industry. In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah welcome the incredible Susie Ferguson, a celebrated journalist, former war correspondent, and host of Saturday Morning on RNZ. Susie shares deeply personal stories that inspired her newly released autobiography, ‘Bloody Minded’ — a book she swore she’d never write. Susie openly discusses her torrid battle with endometriosis which saw her being misdiagnosed, under-diagnosed, gaslit and dependent on opioids just to function in daily life. She talks about war reporting as the only woman in an infantry battalion, her painful entry to motherhood through miscarriage, post-natal trauma, grief, and challenging societal expectations around working mothers. Susie is a powerful advocate for women’s health, empowering and informing others through fearless storytelling. She is a breath of fresh air! In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah have been ‘saving it for the pod’ and while Matty hunkers in the dark corner of a sauna, and Hannah withholds Lego sets to survive the recording time, they reunite for 2025 with more tear-inducing lols. Hannah’s fallen in love with her vintage caravan, Gloria Es-de-van, and Matty’s got a long-awaited rant about lolly scrambles. The girls talk about their ADHD suspicions and Hannah’s bringing listeners along on the journey as she begins the process of diagnosis. Matty’s been making big contributions to her community while Hannah’s reporting some fowl behaviour caught on camera in hers. The girls talk about their intentions for the new year and how they’ll try, but, likely remain intentionally ignorant to keeping themselves accountable. Still! It’s January and there’s no reason not to enjoy feeling enthusiastic for the first month, at least! In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah reissue a deeply moving conversation from the very beginning of the podcast with Matt Brown, while they take a little break over the holidays. Taimalelagi Mataio Faafetai (Matt) Brown is a New Zealand born Samoan author of the bestselling book, She is Not Your Rehab. He is a survivor of family violence and childhood sexual abuse and originally started his domestic violence advocacy work by sharing his story with the men who frequented his busy barbershops as a way to foster vulnerability, healing, and connection. Matt has been a barber, hair artist, and is the former owner of the successful barbershop and men’s space, ‘My Fathers Barber’, in Christchurch. He has now turned his full focus towards his work to eradicate domestic violence in Aotearoa alongside his wife, Sarah Brown. Together they are co-founders of a global anti-violence movement to break the cycle of abuse and intergenerational trauma. Matty and Hannah talk about Matt’s work to help men face their pasts, embrace vulnerability and find healing to transform their lives. Follow Matt and Sarah’s work on Instagram at @sheisnotyourrehab and visit https://www.sheisnotyourrehab.com/. The app Matt talks about in the episode, innerBoy, is now available free to download across New Zealand and Australia. In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah reissue their epic conversation from the podcast’s launch with Aotearoa’s favourite Somatic Sexologist, Morgan Penn while they take a little break over the holidays. The girls ask if putting 'tab A' into 'slot B' is the only way to have sex. (Spoiler — it's not). Morgan talks about how to redefine intimacy in your relationships with your partners and ourselves. They discuss reclaiming your post-partum body, navigating post-partum sex, and how to have those conversations that feel all kinds of awkward. Enjoy one of Untidy’s most downloaded episodes! The girls realise they’re both sick of ‘carrying the watermelons’ and feeling the need to dance. Matty owned the D-floor at the preschool disco, and Hannah has designs on West Coast Swing. They’re feeling up with the play as they announce Untidy podcast is now on YouTube! In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah go off-script and ditch the plan for the episode to talk about what’s really on their minds — the beautiful chaos of life served with a side of emotional vulnerability and an unavoidable sprinkle of self-care. Hannah shares she’s losing her battle with COVID, operating with mashed potato for a brain and finding no choice but to surrender to the slow lane. Matty opens up about a parenting fail that morning that left her feeling particularly low. They talk about the art of repair after rupture and why it’s not always on your time schedule. There’s chat about the pressures of productivity, how to give yourself grace, and how to give yourself permission to lie in the sun with a good book (even if your bathroom remains borderline condemned while you do it). Untidy is celebrating some big wins: a Gold for Best Family Podcast and Silver for Best Branded Podcast at the NZ Podcast Awards! A massive thank you to all of you for your love and support—it means the world to us. Grab your ice cream (you’ll understand why!) and listen in for a good, slightly unhinged kōrero about life’s less-than-perfect moments. Here is a recent conversation I had with Kate Boyd about her new book, An Untidy Faith. In the wake of scandal, culture wars, and abuse, many Christians are wondering whether the North American church is redeemable—and if not, whether they should even stay. While many are answering no to those questions, this book is for those who long to disentangle their faith from all the cultural baggage and recapture the joy of following Jesus. Through personal anecdotes, encounters with the global church, deep dives into Scripture, and helpful historical context about Christianity, An Untidy Faith takes readers on two journeys. The first journey lays out the grand vision of Christianity and the legacy passed on to us by the early believers in hopes of renewing readers' belief in the church writ large. The second journey helps believers understand why they feel distant from their church settings and provides a reorientation drawn from Scripture of God's vision for community. A gentle companion, Kate Boyd walks alongside those who have questions but can't ask them for fear of being labeled by or cast out of their communities. An Untidy Faith is a guidebook for those who want to be equipped with practices to rebuild their faith and shape their communities to look more like Jesus.
