Well this turned into a WHOLE THING! I don't know quite how to capture the way that Jarrod McKenna sharing from his own experience preaching in Perth, Australia (13 hours ahead of Greencastle, Indiana) and my experience in rural Indiana turned into a stunningly coherent vision—with Jarrod doing a revolutionary riff on three trees of Scripture, and my rediscovery of the story of the widow's offering in Mark's gospel as a source of liberation. But boy, you've gotta hear it. We desperately need clarity right now in this deeply Christian work of resistance, but we aren't going to have it so long as we still have planks in our eyes—and Jarrod beautifully helps us see where the planks are, inviting us into a place where God can renew our vision (for ourselves & others) in a way that makes transformation possible.

In this post-election breakdown, Jonathan and Jarrod discuss the highlights the need for prophetic voices, particularly from the Black church, in advocating for social change and justice. They address the challenges of navigating spirituality and activism, the significance of community support, and the necessity of both prayer and action in the face of adversity. Then Jonathan explores the narrative of the Hebrew prophet Elisha from 2 Kings 6 as a framework to explore themes of fear and divine perspective on this current political moment. He emphasizes the importance of seeing beyond immediate circumstances, recognizing the divine presence in our lives, and understanding that our freedom is interconnected with the freedom of others. The story of Elisha illumines for us the call not to stand in the ambivalent middle, but the vulnerable in-between, revealing the power of self-giving, self-sacrificial love--the kind of love that can liberate both the oppressed and the oppressors.

Well hello again my friends! If you've been listening in recent weeks I hope you have enjoyed these talks from Future Church Conference. I am excited to share that a few of us met this last week to start planning the next one — it's going to be great. Follow New City Church or Spiritual Misfits on Instagram for a date announcement soon. This will be the last piece of content for now from the inaugural Future Church Conference — and it's a little different. On the evening of the day we asked 5 different speakers to give a 7 minute pitch for an idea they think is vital for the future church. So now   you have the opportunity to hear these fantastic talks — micro in length, but each one packs a punch.  Keep listening and you will hear:JOYCE TANGI on anti-racismJESSICA MORTHORPE on climate justiceKAREN PACK on LGBTQIA+ InclusionMITCH FORBES on the place of tradition as we move forwardJOEL HOLLIER on being trauma-informedAnd to round it there are a couple of songs at the end from Marion St — you may remember Gabi and Mikali who have previous been on the podcast (if you didn't catch that one go back and listen to those legends). So there is a lot of good stuff jam-packed into this episode. Before we jump in my dear friends, listen up. I'm about to have a couple weeks off after a very big start to the year. Normally I'd line a couple of replay episodes — but as I mentioned last week we are just about to launch a Spiritual Misfits rebrand. And so, here's what's going to happen. For the next 2 or 3 weeks there will be a Spiritual-Misfits-shaped-hole in your podcast player. But make sure you're subscribed — because after that we're going to pop back into your feed with a new look, a new website and plenty of amazing and important new conversations coming your way. Between now and then, hit up our extensive back-log and catch up on any episodes you haven't heard yet. Some recommendations: as we continue to witness and grieve the horrendous genocide the Israeli government is committing in Palestine, can I suggest listening to my friend Sara M. Saleh's episode if you haven't? Or if you want to participate in non-violent love and resistance in this world listen to the episode with Jarrod McKenna. There are so many others I could suggest, but those both feel timely. We'll be back in a few weeks! Until then, big love and remember — you are not alone.   Sign up to our mailing list:https://spiritualmisfits.com.au/Join our online Facebook community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/spiritualmisfitspodcastSupport the pod:https://spiritualmisfits.com.au/support-us/Send us an email: Spiritualmisfits@outlook.comView all episodes at: https://spiritualmisfits.buzzsprout.com

The diverse InVerse podcast community explores how the Scriptures can turn the world upside down, or be weaponized to uphold the status quo. So, this episode we're going to talk the “T” word—theology. Theology is simply how we understand God and our relationship with God. Christian social ethics teaches that our understanding of God forms the basis for everything we do in the world. It impacts everything. This will we be a very special deep dive into the theo-ethical questions rising in the context of the genocide in Gaza. We will talk with three leading Palestinian Christian theologians as they approach Good Friday and Easter Sunday in the context of genocide. Rev. Dr Mitri Raheb is Founder and President of Dar al-Kalima University in Bethlehem. The most widely published Palestinian theologian to date, Dr. Raheb is the author and editor of 50 books including: Decolonizing Palestine: The Land, The People, The Bible; In the Eye of the Storm: Middle Eastern Christians in an Age of Empire and Faith in the Face of Empire: The Bible through Palestinian Eyes—among many, many others. Rev. Dr. Muther Isaac is Pastor of the Christmas Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bethlehem and Dean of Bethlehem Bible College. Rev. Dr. Munther is the author of The Other Side of the Wall: A Palestinian Christian Narrative of Lament and Hope. Omar Haramy, is an Arab, Palestinian, Jerusalemite, Christian, and Greek Orthodox. Since 2017, Omar has served as the director of the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center. Sabeel is a Palestinian ecumenical grassroots liberation theology movement that deepens the faith of Palestinian Christians, promotes unity among them, and guides them to engage for justice and peace. Omar also serves on the Kairos Palestine steering committee. Our Inverse Podcast cohost today will be Jarrod McKenna, a peace award winning Australian pastor and social change educator who has been described by American Civil Rights legend Rev. This week we had a lot of fun chatting with, and learning from, Dr Jarrod McKenna. Jarrod is a reproductive biologist turned zookeeper turned science educator and has had quite a mixture of jobs. As a PhD student at Monash University, he investigated early pregnancy and assisted reproduction in the world's only known menstruating rodent: The Egyptian Spiny Mouse. He then went on to work as a zookeeper at Zoos Victoria and as the Communications Officer at the National Youth Science Forum. These days he works as an Outreach Program Coordinator in the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne, working to engage early high school students in STEM. But science communication has always been at the heart of his work – whether he knew it or not – which led him down an incredibly rewarding track celebrating science and encouraging others to see how amazing and fun science can be. Hi friends, Hannah joins me (Will) again for this week's podcast! And we cover a lot of ground in this chat.In this episode we speak a fair bit about recent events within the evangelical church that you may or may not be familiar with. We do our best to give context, but if we accidentally assumed some ‘insider knowledge' anywhere I apologise for that. There are links below to a number of the individuals and situations we make reference to if you want to get more familiarised. Whilst we were reflecting on some specific recent events, we were also just grappling with what these are symptomatic of. This isn't really intended to be a ‘hot take', it's really just our own attempt to process and make sense of some of the patterns and trends we see, that ought to give us all pause for thought. As we are discussing allegations of clergy abuse and imbalanced power dynamics in religious settings, you may want to proceed with caution if these have been lived realities of yours. As always, take care while listening, and reach out to someone for support if you need it. In this episode we make reference to the following people, situations and resources: Bruxy Cavey's sexual misconduct and The Meeting HouseDanielle Strickland and Jarrod McKenna's response (cited in the article above)Beth Moore and this series of tweetsBrian Houston's resignation from HillsongDan Koch, You Have Permission PodcastJesus and John Wayne, Kristin Kobe Du Mez

We are joined by three guests from Australia: Pastor Ray Minniecon, Jarrod McKenna, and Dr. Byron Smith. Over the course of our conversation we talk about the severity of the problem of climate change and how it impacts indigenous communities, and the theological necessity to engage ourselves with the work of climate justice as an embodied expression of hope in the resurrection. Pastor Ray Minniecon is an Australian indigenous leader and a descendant of the Kabi Kabi nation, the Gureng Gureng nation of South-East Queensland, and also the South Sea Islander people with deep connections to the people of Ambrym Island. He holds many roles, including as executive member of the Indigenous People's Organization, Director of Bunji Consultancies, and Honorary Indigenous Minister for Scarred Tree Indigenous Ministries, St. John's Anglican Church, Glebe. Pastor Ray also recently attended COP26. Dr. Byron Smith is an ecological ethicist and Christian minister. His PhD in theological ethics from the University of Edinburgh focused on emotional responses to climate change in the context of Christian identity. His time is split between pastoral ministry in the Anglican church in Sydney, and a speaking/writing ministry helping churches join the dots between ecological justice and faith. Rather, they were filled with bloody revolutions and armed conflicts.200 hundred years before Christ was born Israel was under Greek occupation and practicing Judasm was outlawed.Judas “The Maccabee”, led his fellow Israelites to take up their swords and overthrow the unjust regime. Thousands were slaughtered in just a few weeks and the Israelites gained their independence and religious freedom. The Israelites became utterly convinced that the Maccabeans were their messiah and that this was the “Kingdom of God”– the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. But the Maccabean family would quickly shift from war heroes to violent oppressors. The swords they used to free were quickly turned on their own people.Rather, Jesus desires for his followers to take action that break this cycle of violence, and create opportunities for those who are our enemy to be transformed.02. Breaking the Cycle of Violence with the Third Way.39 But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil.“Do not resist” is a somewhat misleading translation in that we assume inaction, but nonresistance is not the same as inaction.Fight or Flight; to strike back or to remove ourselves from the situation. But at every turn Jesus rejects this fight-or-flight binary.“A person shaped by the Jesus Creed [love of God and love of neighbor] responds to injustice not with retaliation and vengeance but with grace, compassion, and abundant mercy in such a way that it reverses injustice.” – Scot McKnight.03. Four illustrations for the third way of JesusPhysical ViolenceBut if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.B. Legal Violence40 And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.“So the person suing goes for what is legal (a shirt), but Jesus goes further by urging his followers to relinquish their rights to a robe. This would deprive the person of standard comforts and provision. What Jesus says, at face value, is to strip in front of the person as a means of exhibiting radical distance from social custom. Jesus experienced this too (cf. Matt 27:35).” – Scot McKnightPolitical Violence41 And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.Financial Violence42 Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.“Our voluntary renunciation of counter violence confirms and proclaims our unconditional allegiance to Jesus as his followers, our freedom, our detachment from our own egos. And it is only in the exclusivity of this adherence that evil can be overcome.”– Bonhoeffer, Discipleship04. Unanswered QuestionsWhat can you do in protection of the innocent? What about non combatant military roles? Is any physicality violence? What about violent forms of entertainment? What about violent sports? What about the violence in the Old Testament? Is any warfare justifiable for the Christian?Should a Christian hold a government to the same value system?WHAT ABOUT HITLER?05. Rethinking ViolenceJesus' announcement from chapter 4– “Repent, for the Kingdom is arriving.” And repent is not simply sorrow over your sinful actions but a process of rethinking.Jesus was fully aware of the violence in the OT. He still called it scripture. He still gave this teaching– he still choose death on a cross. As followers of Jesus we are privileged to have his Spirit speaking to us and acting through us. Trust that. May we foster a listening ear that picks up on the still small voice even as we face violent conflict.“Mugged by Jesus” by Jarrod McKenna

Today's storyteller is Dr Jarrod McKenna! Jarrod is a reproductive biologist at Monash University in Australia and today we talk about the Egyptian spiny mouse and studying reproductive biology. The Egyptian spiny mouse is a rare example of menstruation in mammals, especially a small prey sized mammal, as opposed to large mammals with few to no actual predators (such humans and primates). In the lab they can use this mouse as a test subject of sorts or a surrogate for studying human reproductive health, which is part of what Jarrod's research is focused on. So today to sum it up, we talk about the Egyptian spiny mouse, mammal reproductive biology, about conservation and the ethics of whether we SHOULD do certain things; how captive spiny mice populations might be different after 20-40 years in captivity and how that differs from wild populations potentially. It was a very fascinating conversation and I hope you enjoy! --- You can find Rachel Villani on Twitter @flyingcypress and Storytellers of STEMM on Facebook and Twitter @storytellers42. The writer of Hebrews makes many connections and allusions to the Jewish Scriptures and sees Jesus as the culmination of Israel's high priests. If Jesus is the high priest, mediator, and Word of God, where does that leave the Bible? Jonathan and Seth tackle this question head-on. Seth talks about Luther; Jonathan about the topic at hand. They also discuss how to interpret the Bible and how their thinking shapes this very podcast. They give a shout-out to The Inverse Podcast hosted by Jarrod McKenna and Drew Hart, who recently interviewed Dr. Wilda Gafney about a similar topic. You can find that episode here.

(00:00-09:56): Still in the wake of Kobe Bryant’s death, Shaquille O’Neal and other NBA personalities reflect on the Laker legend’s life. Shaq talks about the value of community and friendship and how he works too much. He cries remembering Kobe Bryant: ‘It definitely changes me’. (09:56-19:13): What Do Bill Maher, Donald Miller, and John Piper Have in Common? In different ways, God used them to lead me to Christ, writes John Joseph in Christianity Today. Brian and Ian discuss this. (20:16-29:24): We are joined by author Bethany Jett, writer of “Platinum Faith”. She co-wrote the book with her best friend, Michelle Medlock-Adams. She discusses how our faith shares similar properties to that of Platinum. More information on the book can be found here: https://www.christianbook.com/platinum-faith-brilliant-resilient-worth-ebook/michelle-adams/9781501890734/pd/100790EB (29:24-38:46): Judea, Suburbia, to the Ends of the Earth. Suburban America is a strategic mission field, writes Ashley Hales in Christianity Today. Brian and Ian discuss, as church leaders, how mission is affected and done in suburban Chicago. (39:50-49:58): “The Hypo-Politicization of the American Church” writes Seth Richardson in Missio Alliance. As we turn into the new year, Christians in the United States are facing a crisis that jeopardizes our capacity to be faithful witnesses. (49:58-59:57): RAPID FIRE! Katie Sowers becomes first woman to coach in the Super Bowl, which is awesome. Almost unbelievably, more Americans went to the library than the movies last year. Plus, this poor woman mistakes building foam for mousse. (59:57-1:10:29): Nadia Bolz-Weber tweets about redoing and reusing old sermons. Good or bad? Jarrod McKenna responds with an interesting metaphor. Brian and Ian, as pastors, concur with Jarrod’s response. (1:10:29-1:17:12): Brian and Ian’s “Weird Stuff We Found on the Internet”: You’d think space had enough room for two sattelites, and South Carolina has a high demand for piggy cuddlers. People, it’s not a beer virus, and don’t spark up in court. Meanwhile, divorse, believe it or not, is no reason to call 9-1-1.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I woke up this morning to see our friend Jarrod Mckenna and his pal Del suspended four stories above the Subiaco office of Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, on a hanging tent. The peaceful aerial sit-in is calling on the Australian Government to take immediate action to evacuate Manus before more people die. We needed to chat, so listen in here to our conversation.

Grace. It's more than just a word. It's more than a theory or a concept. I saw grace in such a powerful and tangible way recently while I was visiting Jarrod McKenna in Perth.Jarrod is a friend, pastor, non-violent activist, father, and prolific speaker. He has spoken in many different environments ranging from churches to music festivals (including Splendour in the Grass). He is the founder of First Home Project in Perth and currently lives there with refugees in Perth. Jarrod also works internationally as an activist trainer, particularly in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. It was an absolute privilege to have him share with great vulnerability during this episode. He is a man who is so in love with Jesus and truly believes that healing will come to humanity and that it will come through our love for our neighbour, whomever that might be.

The Immigration Department has a slogan on its website that declares "No Way. They will not make Australia home." The slogan is aimed at deterring asylum-seekers from fleeing to Australia to establish a new life for themselves. Life and Faith spoke to Jarrod McKenna who is co-founder of First Home Project, which welcomes refugees and new arrivals to the country to live with Jarrod and his wife for a year so they can get established. Simon Smart also discusses the appeal that home holds for us.
