Many Bond fans have looked at Connery's character, John Mason; a retired SAS officer incarcertaed in the US for 30 years and wonder if this Mason is an alternative unuverse James Bond. The film makers have been at pains to deny this.In any event it is a film with much to admire and the Oddjob Pod trio spend a happy hour and a half ruminating on this 90s classic.Download the podcast here or listen on the player below. Our film-by-film review of all the Eon-produced James Bond films comes to a close with the latest release, the 2019 film No Time To Die, which was delayed until 2021 due to the pandemic lockdown.Given its denouement, this film takes a somewhat darker tone the closer it gets to the conclusion. As Graham says, "It's not your typical ITV4 James Bond film." Like all Daniel Craig Bond films, this one has an emotional depth that is usually absent in earlier entries.Given the uncertainty of the future of the character and the longevity of the intellectual property, we find ourselves wondering what will become of the franchise and ask ourselves: will James Bond return?Download the podcast here or listen on the player below.      The Oddjob Pod returns for another edition of the Action Movie Landfill. A periodic dive into the almost limitless mound of action films from the sell through era in the late twentieth, early twenty first century. For this episode it was down to Terry to choose and it's fair to say that he chose… poorly. Not for the first time Terry allowed his fond memories of a film from years gone by to cloud his judgement and selected the political action thriller from 1997: The Peacemaker. Starring Nicole Kidman and George Clooney, this big budget blockbuster was directed by Mimi Leder and reflects that post cold war, pre 911 spot where studio representations of US foreign policy was resolutely in denial of their place in the world. Watching back now it seems naïve. The films crude characterisations and dated tropes mean that it does not hold up to contemporary scrutiny and is best enjoyed with a time machine. Last Rat Standing: Skyfall

Sam Mendes Skyfall marked a a stylistic departure at a time when the James Bond franchise was undergoing a renaissance with the Daniel Craig era. Mendes took what has always been a series of films that has prided itself on lavish productions and elevated the aesthetic to art. The mise en scene, cinematography and set pieces are spectacular and beautiful in equal measure. But the film has its critics: a somewhat hokey and derivative plot and an unsatisfying albeit beautifully shot final act.But the film also has a powerful emotional theme about family obligation. We also see James Bond at something of a crisis point as he approaches the final stanza of his career and is confronted with his own mortality.  Download the podcast here or you can listen to it on the player below. Action Movie Landfill - Blade

Stephen Norrington's Blade sits if you'll pardon the pun at the leading edge of big-screen Marvel movies. Not counting Howard The Duck, the 1998 film is the first Marvel superhero to be given a cinema release and heralded the wave of X-Men and films and Disney's cinematic universe. The film also sits on something of an intersection in 90s Vampire films; the most successful being Neil Jordan's Interview With A Vampire and Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula which place the vampire as the main protagonist and invite the audience to feel as much sympathy and they do horror. Meanwhile, Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn and Joss Whedon's Buffy The Vampire Slayer are reviving the old monster rally vibe to the genre, making vampire stories a lot more fun. Buffy the TV series is also injecting a dose of vampire romance and eroticism which would be dominated in the subsequent decade by The Vampire Diaries. In the middle of all this is Blade, himself something of an intersectional character: neither vampire nor human; at home nowhere and is cursed to fight until he dies. All told a pretty grim existed magnificently portrayed by Wesley Snipes. The film spawned two sequels, a spin-off TV show and he will return to cinemas in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2025. So there's plenty to discuss in the latest Action Movie Landfill edition of the Oddjob Pod. Join Graham, Terry, and Gary as they sharpen their steel and tuck into Blade. The film is a meta, fourth-wall-breaking action comedy which received a standing ovation at the Cannes film festival and is celebrated by film buffs for its stylish presentation. The film is a beautiful blend of light and dark, contains tremendous chemistry between Downey Junior and his co-star Val Kilmer and showcases the immaculate Michelle Monaghan as Downey Junior's lost love, Harmony. Snookering you tonight - Casino Royale

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2023

In this episode of the Oddjob Pod we celebrate Daniel Craig's first film in the role of James Bond: Casino Royale. If you sat a panel of film critics in front of all 26 James Bond films and asked them to pick the best – not their favourite – but the best, there's a good chance that most would pick Casino Royale. Daniel Craig was a controversial casting of James Bond and there was an ineffective online campaign against his casting with threats to boycott etc. But Craig proved to be a hugely popular and authentic 007. He was also the beneficiary of an almost flawless production that completely revitalised the James Bond franchise. From the beginning, the film departed from the realm of invisible cars and diamond-encrusted satellite lasers of Die Another Day, opting for a more gritty, violent, and emotionally complex James Bond movie. It drew heavily from contemporary spy thrillers like The Bourne Identity and anchored itself in the original source material, Ian Fleming's novel of the same name, which had not been adapted previously as an official James Bond film. In Casino Royale, the audience bears witness to the development of 007. We come to understand why he is who he is through his relationship with Vespa Lynd (Eve Green). Their love affair proves to be a cornerstone of the Craig films and lifts Casino Royale from an action romp to being a film of substance. Such is the departure from previous Bond films that it is still not universally popular among Bond fans. Nevertheless, Casino Royale was a huge box office and critical success and welcomed a new cohort of fans from demographics that normally would not call themselves such. It does all this while remaining an identifiable James Bond movie with some truly unforgettable, and on one occasion eye-watering, moments.      The Action Movie Landfill is our side-project that explores the classic (or otherwise) movies made during the golden age of sell-through video. The film we have chosen for this edition, is The Transporter. Made in 2003 it is at the end of the golden age but was still a big hit on the DVD market. The movie is significant for tough guy actor and former diver, Jason Statham who had played memorable supporting roles in Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. In The Transporter, "The Stath" had a vehicle of his own. While not a stonewall classic, this low budget French action flick, co-written by Luc Besson, has a slick European feel combined with some high-octane Hong-Kong style action sequences. The moderately engaging plot serves to move the story from one action set piece to the next and it has a supporting cast that, it is fair to say, are doing their best.      A View To A Kill represents the end of an era in the James Bond universe. Although not know at the time it was to be the final outing for Roger Moore. Hereafter, Bond movies took a slight tonal shift which means that this film proved to be the last of its kind.Sadly, in part due to the age of its leading man but also, it's uninspired, out of the box plot, flawed set up and tired dialogue, A View To A Kill is not celebrated. However, the dynamite performances of Christopher Walken, Grace Jones make the film a fondly remembered if not quite a classic movie among Bond fans.In this episode of the Oddjob Pod, Gary, Graham and Terry celebrate the film's triumphs. forgive its failures and reflect on the the Roger Moore era of James Bond.Download the MP3 or listen to this episode or on the player below.      There is no better way to illustrate late the Roger Moore period of James Bond than our hero calmly diffusing a nuclear bom while wearing a clown suit. The high stakes circus act that is Octopussy is a much loved, fondly remembered outing with some memorable action sequences and a stellar ensemble. However it has its problems, specifically with it's colonial attitudes and portrayal of South Asian characters. At least for some fans these are problems. In this episode of the OddjobPod Terry, Graham and Gary discuss the penultimate episode of Roger Moore's Bond canon, consider it's failings and celebrate its victories. Ask any fan for their top five James Bond films and most will include The Spy Who Loved Me among them. After the dismal failure of The Man With The Golden Gun. the James Bond franchise was having an existential crisis. Harry Salzman had left, Kevin McClory was hovering around, threatening to make a rival film which prevented Cubby Broccolli from reintroducing Blofeld and Spectre back into the Bond fold.007 needed a big statement film to stay relevant and re-engage the public and in The Spy Who Loved Me it succeeded. This lavish production produced one of the best stunts of all time, spawned sound stage in the world and gave us one of the most entertaining James Bond movies ever. The film was the first of two Bond films penned by Christopher Wood. Much of the movie's humour comes from Wood, who under a pseudonym wrote a long series of naughty sex comedy farce novels during the 70s and 80s.  The second film he wrote was Moonraker, which succeded The Spy Who Loved Me.Graham, Terry and Gary analyse and celebrate this film. Its importance to the franchise and to ourselves. We also, hopefully, successfully, argue that the movie has relevance today in 2020.Download the MP3 or listen to this episode or on the player below. The Oddjob Pod is on Apple Podcasts (if you like the show please give it a 5-star rating and a nice review)Or you can add our feed to your podcatcher of choice.Like our Facebook page.Follow @oddjobpod Tweet to @oddjobpod

Is Never Say Never Again a proper James Bond film? This is the question at the centre of our latest episode of the Oddjob Pod.Irvin Kershner's 1983 rebel Bond film based on Kevin McLorey and Ian Fleming's original story for Thunderball was a hugely controversial outing at the time but it was also a critical and box office success. This was, of course, mainly thanks to in part thanks to the return of Sean Connery to the role of Bond but also due to the outstanding cast and crew that contributed to this remarkably polished film, given the challenges that it faced.Graham, Terry and Gary assess the merits and authenticity of this film and ask if it deserves more respect and recognition. We also put it up against the film it remade, Thunderball and it’s rival from the same year, Octopussy. And we ask what impact if any, the movie had on the official James Bond Franchise.
