linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This month is “Dark Hero” month at Catching Up On Cinema All month long, Kyle and Trevor will be reviewing superhero movies of the antihero or dark hero variety! This week, Trevor and Kyle review Stephen Norrington's, Blade (1998)! Both popula and financially successful at the time of its release, Stephen Norrington's, Blade (1998), is an early live-action Marvel comics film that at one point faded into obscurity, but has since seen its cultural footprint grow in recent years. Released just prior to The Matrix (1999), as well as the comic book/superhero movie boom of the 2000's, beginning with 20th Century Fox's, X-Men (2000), Blade stands as the forerunner for many of the trends that would become ubiquitous in Hollywood action cinema in the coming years. Starring Wesley Snipes, who would represent the character to such a crowd-pleasing degree that subsequent iterations of the titular Blade would be altered to match his appearance and mannerisms, Blade is a high-energy action film that is distinctly of its time, yet remains quite charming for those with a strong tolerance for late-90's aesthetics. In actuality more of a supernatural action film than a superhero movie, in the long history of Big 2 (DC and Marvel) comic book adaptations, Blade holds the distinction of being both one of the earliest Marvel films (bearing an African American protagonist no less, as well as being a nasty and gritty), as well as being a rare, R-rated Marvel film, produced well before the rise of Marvel Studios' more homogenized branding and aesthetic. A cultural artifact of late 90's aesthetics and trends, as well as the crown jewel of director Norrington's very short filmography, Blade is an energetic and brutal superhero flick that is well worth revisiting.
Stephen Norrington's Blade sits if you'll pardon the pun at the leading edge of big-screen Marvel movies. Not counting Howard The Duck, the 1998 film is the first Marvel superhero to be given a cinema release and heralded the wave of X-Men and films and Disney's cinematic universe. The film also sits on something of an intersection in 90s Vampire films; the most successful being Neil Jordan's Interview With A Vampire and Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula which place the vampire as the main protagonist and invite the audience to feel as much sympathy and they do horror. Meanwhile, Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn and Joss Whedon's Buffy The Vampire Slayer are reviving the old monster rally vibe to the genre, making vampire stories a lot more fun. Buffy the TV series is also injecting a dose of vampire romance and eroticism which would be dominated in the subsequent decade by The Vampire Diaries. In the middle of all this is Blade, himself something of an intersectional character: neither vampire nor human; at home nowhere and is cursed to fight until he dies. All told a pretty grim existed magnificently portrayed by Wesley Snipes. The film spawned two sequels, a spin-off TV show and he will return to cinemas in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2025. So there's plenty to discuss in the latest Action Movie Landfill edition of the Oddjob Pod. Join Graham, Terry, and Gary as they sharpen their steel and tuck into Blade. Legends of Halloween continues with more vampire hunting action, this time coutesy of Marvel Comics! Before Bryan Singer's X-Men (2000), before Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002), and before Ang Lee's Hulk (2003), director Stephen Norrington launched Marvel to the big screen with his blood-drenched take on the daywalking half-vampire Blade. Played by Wesley Snipes, the film also stars Stephen Dorff as the villanous Deacon Frost and Kris Kristofferson as Blade's mentor and armorer, Whistler. The film was a commercial success, spawning two sequels and a TV series, as well as setting up the template for the Marvel Cinematic Universe films to come. With an MCU installment on the way starring Mahershala Ali, we're turning the clocks back 25 years to see if Blade still looks sharp! Senior Writer Aaron Sarnecky and Senior TV Columnist Josh Sarnecky are back for another movie retrospective. This month they're talking about Blade for its 25th anniversary. Blade is a superhero film directed by Stephen Norrington and written by David S. Goyer, the latter of whom The Pop Break interviewed at NYCC. Based on the Marvel Comics character created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan, the movie opened in theaters on August 21, 1998. The film follows Blade (Wesley Snipes), a half-vampire who hunts the secret society of vampires. His friends include his mentor Abraham Whistler (Kris Kristofferson) and hematologist Dr. Karen Jenson (N'Bushe Wright). The three work together to prevent the vampire Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff) from awakening an ancient blood god. Blade received mixed reviews from critics but was popular with audiences, grossing $131.2 million on a $45 million budget. It spawned two sequels and is slated for a reboot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Aaron and Josh talk about the movie's elements, including its plot, characters, action, and effects. They also touch on the comic book movie landscape in 1998 and the film's legacy today. For another comic book movie, you can listen to Aaron and Josh's Man of Steel podcast with Batman By The Numbers host Daniel Cohen. Blade is streaming on Max.
Have you heard of Blade? He's the scourge of the vampire world and is what they refer to as a "Daywalker" - he has all of their strengths....NONE of their weaknesses. And he's played by Wesley Snipes, have you heard of him? He was one of the bigger action stars of the '90's back when action stars were actually a thing which would draw folks to go to the movies. The lore of Blade and the charisma of Snipes seemed to be an ideal match at the time and twenty-five years ago this month, we saw the release of that first Blade movie (starring Snipes in the titular role) which was directed by Stephen Norrington. It was not only a surprise hit at the box office but it also earned the distinction of being THE first successful feature film adapted by a Marvel Comics property.....and obviously was far from the last. It co-starred Stephen Dorff, Kris Kristofferson, and N'Bushe Wright. Four years later came the release of its sequel directed by Oscar-winning genre legend Guillermo Del Toro - both Snipes and Kristofferson returned to be joined by a pretty impressive extended cast including Ron Pearlman, Leonor Varela, Norman Reedus, Luke Goss, and the legendary Donnie Yen. In honor of the 25th Anniversary of this seminal cinema property, what better way to celebrate than a special DOUBLE-FEATURE review of those first two Blade movies! This week we salute all the heroes and their various blood types. Rutger Hauer, Vincent D'Onofrio (looking fine as hell), Delroy Lindo, Sean Connery, that pale dude from Queen of the Damned, The Invisible Man, La Femme Nikita, Mr. Hyde's outsized tophat, Stephen Norrington's ego, Captain Nemo's Indian Capoeira skills and a surprising amount of Cum. Literally the whole shebang. We get the dog skull rolling with a chat about a game that makes no sense but nevertheless captivates the endtimes in The Blood of Heroes aka Salute of the Jugger (1989). There was a time, if you'll gather round our podcast fire, when you had movie studios looking for anything with Vampires, and as for comic books... well, I guess Men in Black was an exception (we forgot to mention that in the episode so I'm mentioning it here, correction huzzah), but that's actually a good example of what we mean when saying comic books were neither hated or a priority for studios. They were... there, and easy to ignore. Why adapt a comic book when there were (gasp) original properties that could be pitched to executives for possible pick up! Maybe someone would find the next Tarantino, or even the next Usual Suspects! shrug. The point is, Vampires were a big deal in the late 90s, on the heels of Bram Stoker's Dracula, Interview with the Vampire and (on TV) Buffy. Luckily for us all, or maybe for some of us, David S Goyer stepped up to the plate and made a pitch from a comic character (via Marvel who around that time were verging on bankruptcy and only one property, Howard the Duck, was released by a major studio to that time) who fought and killed Vampires with special ass kicking skills. From what we've read, originally the comic character was white in the 70s. For the film, action star Wesley Snipes was hired and his take was to be stoic... very very very stoic. So, that could work, right? Jack and Trash-Panda Korey take on not one, or two, but *three* movies with Snipes as the titular BLADE from 1998 to 2004. Did we like them? Mostly! to varying extents! films discussed: BLADE (Directed by Stephen Norrington) (1998) BLADE II (Directed by Guillermo del Toro) (2002) BLADE: TRINITY (Directed by David s Goyer) (2004) oh and SPOILERS THROUGHOUT
Writer, actor, and fellow vampire hunter Jamell Moses joins us to discuss 1998's 'Blade', a Marvel adaptation that succeeds where others have failed due to its vision, ingenuity, and an immaculate lead performance by Wesley Snipes. We discuss the film's legacy as the first (and arguably best) of Marvel's ventures on the silver screen, the subversive political backbone that drives the film's interior world of elite vampires manipulating the levers of society, and why the sexlessness of modern superhero films spells trouble for any attempts to bring the raw carnality of a Blade story to life.Follow Jamell Moses on Twitter. A different group of powerful seven... Directed by Stephen Norrington, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is the dieselpunk superhero film loosely based on the first volume of the comic book series of the same name by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill. Luke and Nathan journey back to 2003 to revisit what would be Sean Connery's final theatrically released live-action role. A team of extraordinary figures culled from great adventure literature (including Alan Quatermain, vampiress Mina Harker from Dracula, the Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, an American secret service agent named Sawyer, Captain Nemo, and Dorian Gray), are called to stop a villain intent on turning the nations of the world against one another.
On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are strapping into our finest leather body armor and getting ready to kill some vampires. This time, we watched the Stephen Norrington film from 1998, Blade.I don't think I ever would have guessed that politics would play such an integral role in the lives of vampires, but I keep getting proven wrong. This film, What We Do In the Shadows, and heck, even in Twilight there's always a top council of vampires. One would think that near immortality and extreme strength would lend itself toward more anarchy, but these vamps just can't help but be political. And yet, they can never foresee or stop an avenging character like Blade. For all their puttering around and talking across long tables, they all end up getting messed up by some daywalking force of vengeance.I think the moral of this story is that vampires, while powerful and occasionally sexy, aren't able to think outside the box. I hope this won't come back to bite me one day, pun very much intended, but vampires are kinda dumb.(Recorded on June 16, 2022)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:Blade (1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Stephen Norrington — The Movie Database (TMDB)Wesley Snipes — The Movie Database (TMDB)Stephen Dorff — The Movie Database (TMDB)Kris Kristofferson — The Movie Database (TMDB)N'Bushe Wright — The Movie Database (TMDB)Donal Logue — The Movie Database (TMDB)Udo Kier — The Movie Database (TMDB)Batman (1989) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Xena: Warrior Princess (TV Series 1995–2001) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Blade — The Movie Database (TMDB)Mahershala Ali — The Movie Database (TMDB)Spider-Man (TV Series 1994–1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Morbius (2022) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Harry and the Hendersons (1987) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Jessica Biel — The Movie Database (TMDB)Guillermo del Toro — The Movie Database (TMDB)Sharknado (2013) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WildTMNT Shredder's RevengeGotham (TV Series 2014–2019) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Follow Us:Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts! Our Instagram profile! Our Twitter profile!

The daywalker returns to Verbal Diorama for Sequeltember, and this time he has a Blood Pack. Guillermo del Toro admired Stephen Norrington's Blade so much, he analysed it in depth once he took the reins for Blade II. He wanted to build on the world of Blade (1998) by upping the blood, gore, martial arts and monsters, while also staying true to Norrington's original vision. On its release in 2002, critics were mixed on Blade II, and even now it sits at a disappointing 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, but Blade II gave us more than the return of Wesley Snipes in the role he was born to play, more than the resurrection of Whistler, more than the always perfect Ron Perlman, or more than the terrifyingly beautiful design for the Reapers. Blade II left a lasting legacy, which is still being felt today, and without it cinema would be very different and slightly less full of beautiful monsters... Heroes Through the Decades ass kicks into the '90s, with Wesley Snipes' cool, charismatic badass vampire hunter - Blade! In 1971 the Comics Code Authority updated its code criteria, which had been in place since 1954, relaxing the rules on the depiction of horror in comics. For the first time, vampires were allowed in comic books. Marvel's first pseudo-vampire character, Morbius the Living Vampire sowed the seeds for the second; Blade the Vampire Hunter. Wesley Snipes was originally interested in making an adaptation of Black Panther before his attention was piqued with a movie adaptation of Blade. In many ways, it feels like the character of Blade was made for Wesley Snipes, and he not only decided to star in Blade, but also produce it through his production company Amen Ra Films. Snipes was literally and figuratively invested in this production. Snipes, along with writer David S. Goyer (who fought against studios trying to whitewash the character) and director Stephen Norrington, formed a trifecta of creative passion for Blade; for his story, the homage paid to Hong Kong action films and to make this story as bloody, gory and fun as it could be. Insert very '90s techno rave music here. IT'S BLOOD RAVE TIME! I would love to hear your thoughts on Blade (1998) ! GET IN TOUCH.... With ownership over the entire “Spider-Man” catalog and the characters surrounding the friendly neighborhood webslinger, Sony announced plans to develop several new films that would branch out and expand the whole universe. Following the surprising success around “Venom,” the studio moved swiftly to begin developing even more projects including one centered around Morbius The Living Vampire — a character that started out as a villain and eventually became more of an anti-hero in recent years. Ideas surrounding a live-action Morbius started many years earlier when director Stephen Norrington teased the possibility of introducing the character in the first “Blade” film but that never came to fruition. Then in 2018, talks heated up with director Daniel Espinoza and Oscar winner Jared Leto about starring in a film adaptation based on the character. The movie ended up serving as an origin story centered around Dr. Michael Morbius, a brilliant mind stricken with a terrible blood born disease that would eventually take his life until he decided to conduct an experiment that repaired his body but damned his soul with an insatiable thirst for human blood…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to drink some blood and wait for the vampire bats to fly past us as we review the 2022 film “Morbius”…

We talk about Blade and the things you missed if you don't read the comics. Hear about Whistler, Deacon Frost, La Magra, Vanessa, Wu-Tang Clan, and more! Talk with us on Twitter and Reddit. Links from the discussion… The Blade character has a long history in the Marvel universe, but wasn't popular until the movie dropped in 1998. Deacon Frost is in the comics, and pretty close to how he was in the movie. Whistler is not from the main 616 universe. But, fun fact! The Blade movies exist in their own universe! (26320) Whistler is based on a character named Jamal Afari. David S Goyer wrote the story for this and a ton, a ton of other comic movies. Most people don't know how much he's had his hand in comic movies. But, once you get a sense of his style, you can see it. And, it's not always great. Blade 1 and 2, I believe, are his best work. He also directed Blade Trilogy and Jay thinks it was absolutely terrible. Stephen Norrington directed Blade and it's a miracle that it was good. (he's not a great director) Blade II was directed by Guillermo Del Toro and you can see the difference in style, design and fight scenes. Jay says that Blade II is the rare sequel that is better than the original. We don't know much about the new Blade movie that they are making. It starts filming this July and Mahershala Ali is the lead role, but that's it. We know he spoke in the post credits scene for Eternals. Big questions: Will it be PG 13 or rated R? The current Marvel movies haven't done anything "dark" yet, but there is plenty of material for them to pull from. Cool Blade facts! Blade Trivia! News you can abuse! For some reason, people think that Dr. Strange 2 is going to introduce the X-men. The upcoming Moon Knight series looks like it will pull some ideas from Warren Ellis' comic run. Marvel/Disney is removing Marvel shows from Netflix. No one knows what that means.
Doug and Coker return with another Slashers Smoke Break episode, by popular demand! To get an early start on [Fe]Bruary, they are doing Death Machine. What is [Fe]Bruary? It's a celebration of killer robots (and Fe is iron on the periodic table of elements). Written and directed by Stephen Norrington, the film stars icons, Brad Dourif and Richard Brake. Norrington, previously worked as a special effects artist on films such as Lifeforce, Aliens, Hardware, The Witches, and Split Second. He also allegedly punched Sean Connery. The guys also talk about Mark Rosman's 1995 film, Evolver. . . then of course Doug brings up Short Circuit 2 (RIGHTFULLY, BECAUSE IT IS THE STUFF OF LEGEND). This week, the squad takes on the movie "Death Machine," the first film from director Stephen Norrington, better known as the director of Blade and more recently known as the guy who made Sean Connery quit acting. Come for the witty banter, stay for the moments when everyone realizes they've seen different cuts of the film.
[School of Movies 2017] This was a commission from Chris Finik and turned out to be one of our most challenging shows. I was ill and having to energise myself on sugar, caffeine and enthusiasm while painkillers did their work, but more specifically we were dealing with a movie that is on the surface a silly mess, unlovable and mostly forgotten. We had to find the elements of quality in a mismanaged, overambitious yet underachieving project which ended the careers of a promising director (Stephen Norrington, the man behind Blade and little else) and a legendary actor, Shaun Connery. Also we haven't seen most of the rest of the cast in the interim years either, but that's what happens when you throw 22% of your budget ($17 million) at one actor and find yourself short on what is obviously an ensemble film. This also serves as a weirdly specific prototype for Marvel's Avengers movie which came out nine years later in 2012. So join us for ourr 199th movie covered as we go on a voyage with these men who aren't very extraoriary, certainly not gentle and the best of their number is a woman (notably the only person in the film without a Y-chromasome.)
So you want to make a movie about an anachronistic crime fighting team based on a comic by Alan Moore? What could go wrong? Well, if you're the director of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003), Stephen Norrington, everything. Starring Sean Connery, Peeta Wilson, Stuart Townsend, and Shane West, this comic book movie rocks a great concept, but falls apart in execution. There are fun moments and ideas, but overall this film is boring. We'll explain what fell short, and also later re-cast it with our picks for a remake and tweak the story to improve it.
