Well, I never did truly think “I'd ever get my feet this far”! We have arrived at the final 50th episode of my Radio Owlsnest songwriter podcasts. It's been a fantastic and lovely journey for me, playing my rare demos from my archives and sharing the stories behind the songs. I labeled you listeners as “OwlHeads” quite early on in the proceedings, and that label has stuck over the ensuing years … and so I'd like to take a moment here to wholeheartedly thank all the “noble OwlHeads” who listened, encouraged, consoled, shared, liked, commented - and above all, became my friends during the recording of these hour or so long episodes. I feel I know a few of you quite intimately. Thank you. In today's on-line society, when speed is everything, it's painfully obvious that gaining someone's attention for sixty minutes or more is a gargantuan and rather fruitless task - particularly when the premise of the show is “retro” and “adult” ... But all in all, I feel “Radio Owlsnest” gained a core underground and finely-tuned audience; so again, thank you for your diligence - against all the odds. Who said the album was dead? Certainly not me or you … I've tried to give a few of you OwlHeads out there shout-outs during this show; tried to remember most of your names; forgive me if I didn't mention a few of you lovelies, but as you know, I “wing it'” and improvise as I go on these freewheeling shows. But know this ... I luvs ya. What has been a revelation for me personally while recording these shows, is gaining an overview of my songwriting career, a kaleidoscopic big view, as such, of my progression, my development, my influences, my strengths and my weaknesses, etc., over the years. It's not often that a songwriter/artist gets a chance to look back on his or her creative journey. Radio Owlsnest helped me re-evaluate my creative instinct and motivations; It was like looking back at a younger, turned-on, highly enthused version of myself. Certainly a kind of “time travel” took place for me … invaluable and fortunate at this late stage of the game. But mostly it's been incredible FUN for me; I had a grand old time of it - searching for rare demos in the “Pagey” song archives and remembering, re-living and imparting the hazy stories behind the songs. I was in the “Museum of Myself!” So thank you all for giving me your ears and good spirit, for giving me a platform to express myself - and a damn good reason to dust off those old ditties from the vault and give them life once again. You OwlHeads have been a powerful MOTIVATING force! And massive thanks to our very own Vanessa Leavitt for keeping these shows coming to you. I hope you enjoy the 50th and final episode of Radio Owlsnest. Fly high Martin X
“The Wreckless Eric 1980 Sessions” - A Radio Owlsnest Special. I've been wanting to record this show for a very long time, and after re-mastering some precious vintage cassette demos, I feel the time is right to tell the story of working with iconic punk legend “Wreckless Eric” in 1980. Along with my songwriting partner of that period, Brian Fairweather, the three of us wrote and demoed 6 brand new cracking songs for a potential Wreckless Eric album to be released on the infamous Stiff records. The demos were recorded in my little London bedsit flat on a rudimentary analog 4 track tape machine set-up - as raw and primitive as you could imagine … but I believe these tracks have a very special undeniable power about them that reflect the zeitgeist of that era. And Wreckless (Eric Goulden) was in fine form lyrically and vocally on these (up to this point, never heard or released) extremely rare demos. We wrote and recorded these songs over a frantic period of three weeks in my minuscule bedsit featuring Brian on multiple guitars and effects and backing vocals, me on bass guitar and sparse keyboards and backing vocals, and Eric on rhythm guitar and lead vocals. And we used a first generation Roland CompuRythmn 68 drum machine for our drums. Dave Robinson, the head of Stiff records, was very excited and encouraged by our homemade efforts and set dates in a professional studio to record the songs (with Brian and I in the band) for the prospective new “Wreckless” album. But alas, tragically, it was not to be … Although full band rehearsals took place, and a producer (Bob Andrews of Graham Parker and the Rumour fame) was selected, and we even found ourselves set up in Battery Studios, London, waiting to record the album master tracks, Eric didn't turn up for the final sessions! After all these years, I still hear the potential of these raw songs. And I believe they portray the unique artistry of one of England's greatest eccentric punk artists and poets, at the very height of his creative ability. It's a story I've wanted to tell for a very long time. Martin Wreckless Eric Demos - All songs written by Eric Goulden/Fairweather/Page; Recorded by Martin Page (1980). ℗ 2023 Martin Page. Greetings oh feathered beauties! I am back with more hidden bounty from my ancient song archives. More rare demos, sonic experiments and even a brand new track will hopefully charm your “OwlHead” ears. It was wonderful to work back in the day with the fine singer/songwriter/guitarist Hamish Stuart of the iconic band, “The Average White Band”. I'll start off the show by playing you a track we wrote together that became a single for his band, “Easy Pieces”; A cool psychedelic soul number that I now think was somewhat influenced by the “Prince” aesthetic. Of course, Hamish went on to work with Paul McCartney and is now presently with Ringo Starr … so it was lovely to discover and spin this little gem from our past. For the songwriters out there, I'll play two demos I was working on with Robbie Williams - two rough home demos of the same idea, which illustrates quite well how I develop a concept. I think you'll find it very interesting how my demos were presented and constructed for Robbie … to inspire and encourage him to engage and develop an idea with me. And here's a treasure for all Jack Hues (Wang Chung) fans: I'll play the cassette demo of a song we were writing together for his (so far) unreleased renowned solo album “The Anatomy Lesson”. It's a very, very COOL track … and, although we are loosely jamming and it's just rough and ready, the potential of this song is self evident. Because the re-ignition of the “Pagey Quiz” lit up the internet and caused traffic to stop during last month's episode, I will be asking you three more incredibly hard brain curdling “Pagey” questions. These are conundrums from which I believe even the most wise OwlHead will cower away - fearing that investigating these questions could cause neural problems. Beware - approach with extreme caution. I'll spin a terrific London-recorded demo - a song I wrote and performed with Brian Fairweather that Kim Carnes eventually heard and recorded on her album, “Cafe Racers”. It became “Fairweather/Page's” first top ten adult/contemporary hit in America … and listening to it today, I'm very proud of the Doobie Brothers/Pointer Sisters swing and irresistible groove we achieved on this particular demo. I always like to include a new song I've just written if I can on these shows, and I'm happy this month to present a song called, “How”. I hope you like it and that it speaks to you. Bloody hell, this is the penultimate episode 49, we are nearly at the final 50th show; who would have thought, “I'd ever get my feet this far”.
A Radio Owlsnest Halloween Special - The Making Of “Ghostbusters” With Martin Page and Brian Fairweather. I had only been in LA for two weeks with my “Q.Feel” songwriting partner, Brian Fairweather, when we unexpectedly found ourselves in a valley studio with Ray Parker, Jr., recording the iconic smash, “Ghostbusters”! We'd gone to Ray's studio to say hello and present ourselves as songwriters when - out of the blue - we suddenly found ourselves playing on a track he'd just-that-minute written for a movie … Brian on electric guitar and me on a cheap Synthesizer. What was this strange thing we were contributing musical parts to - what the hell did “Ghostbusters” mean? We hadn't planned for this at all … Ray went to lunch and said, “you guys just do your thing; I'll be back later”. So, for two hours, we laid down overdubs on this strange creature of a song. Ray came back from lunch, loved what we had played, and a few weeks later the song was number one in the American charts and the movie Ghostbusters was becoming an instant classic. Both Brian and I didn't know what had hit us … or quite what had just happened; it was a whirlwind of the strangest, but most wondrous kind. So, to honor Halloween, Brian and I got together to record this Radio Owlsnest podcast special, “The Making of Ghostbusters”. We attempted to remember the details of that odd day when we went innocently along to introduce ourselves to the great Ray Parker, Jr. as young songwriters, and ended up somehow being musicians and improvising on one of the most renowned and loved hits of our time. It's a crazy, bizarre story, but that's perfect for Halloween, isn't it? Enjoy! Martin and Brian.
Hello my lovely “Fowlheads” - I mean “OwlHeads” (I didn't mean to offend you). We're back for another journey into my deep song archives. I'm quite amazed how many rarities are still to be found in the dusty vaults ... and I start the show by playing a movie song I wrote way back in the day, which for the life of me, I can't recall what bloody blockbuster I wrote it for! I just know it was for a Jerry Bruckheimer film, so I had to have explosions in the song every 30 seconds or so. I'll spin a song I wrote with Bernie Taupin that helped land him his solo recording deal with RCA records in the 80s. There are terrific John Mellencamp vibes to be found here. When Bernie's solo album, “Tribe”, came out, it eventually appeared as a B-side for a single release. And I can't resist playing you a Gaelic/Celtic-tinged demo from the naughty 90s that espouses the thrill of returning home to one's birthright country - in this case, the Bonny highlands of Scotland. I was thinking Rod Stewart, Simple Minds, Big Country when I began this unfinished ditty. While scouring the bounced files of my overused studio computer, I found a pre-mix of a track featured on my 2008 solo album, “In the Temple Of The Muse” - a song called “Try”. I'll play it here to illustrate the subtle nuances of how a song I'm producing makes its final journey towards being the “Master”. And I touch up a favorite song of mine with added new percussion, drum and bass guitar overdubs. I love the process of “re-painting/re-visualizing” an old song of mine. I want to share its new visage with you here. And bugger me, I bring back the “Martin Page Quiz” on this month's episode. I'll be asking you six incredibly hard questions about my musical career. If you get at least four of these right, well then you are truly a divine “OwlHead” of mighty countenance! I'll spin a track that promotes tolerance, empathy and open-mindedness: As Shakespeare once said, “Un Sex Me”…. And, as I sometimes absolutely adore to do, I'll play a brand new fresh spanking track that's in the making as we speak. A song called “Dearest Hope”, wherein I imagine “hope” as an old, wise, world-weary man who has gone missing from the long suffering community. When he eventually returns, tired and with the weight of the world on his shoulders, he's welcomed with desperate open arms and hearts. For hope … is life's victory. So join old man Hope by the fire for a while and throw away those cares and tribulations. It's time to fly away with the “OwlHeads”. Martin x
Welcome to the feathered brotherhood who join me today for Episode 47 of the Radio Owlsnest syndicated blockbuster world dominating songwriter podcast series … Ahhh - not really. In truth, it's remained an intimate, small, close knit village concern which has been lovely for me to host over the last few years. So thank you to you “OwlHeads” who have given me your ears so consistently and graciously. I'll start proceedings off by playing a very rare demo I wrote with fine female lyricist Terry Cox, which surprised me how ‘Elton John' it sounded after all these years. I was beginning to write with Bernie Taupin at that time and I think the aesthetic was rubbing off on me a little. Dusting this demo off after all these years was illuminating to me. I'll spin a track I'm preparing for volume 3 of my, “The Poetry of Collisions” demo/odds and sods compilation series/releases; a song title that refers to the suffering-laden cyclic nature of death and reincarnation - no beginning no end … Bugger me, that sounds heavy and fun! But have no fear my friends, my song relates to a beautiful woman and lover. And it's my great pleasure to play a track in progress - an unheard song I was writing with the great Wang Chung man Jack Hues. I was watching the Beatles, “Get Back” documentary recently (again), and was fascinated at how Paul McCartney conjured up the song, “Get Back”, from nowhere; It made me remember a track I was writing with Jack - how we were creating it ‘live' and organically on the spot. It's called “Big Cathedral” and it's a great track we never finished; I'll play you it's very birth, warts and all. It's a great illustration of how inspiration hits as you jam - improvise - perform. My motivational talk this month is about just that, ‘Motivation'! What motivated me to be a songwriter? What drove me on, what inspired me to dig deep and to make my dream materialize; what made me never give in when disappointment reigned - what was the essence of my desire. I think a few of you budding song crafters out there might find this section of the show a touch interesting. Scurrying around the dark song archives, I found a terrific demo I wrote and recorded with the mighty Clif Magness, a track eventually recorded by Eric Martin for a movie soundtrack. It's hard to believe it's an 8 track analog demo - such is Clif's magnificent production values and lead singing. Sometimes the demo beats the master! And amongst other ditties from my demo song vaults, I'll play a brand new song I've just finished for a forthcoming solo album I'm preparing. I'm very proud of this new piece - it has a personal psychological spirit about it ... I hope you like it. It's time for you to become an “OwlHead” again. Settle back - enjoy the show. Martin
“Going Down The Rabbit Hole with Martin Page” A Conversation with Jack Hues Please join me for an extensive interview/conversation with “Wang Chung” lead man Jack Hues. He was in Los Angeles on tour and stopped by my home studio for a personal playback of my upcoming new album, on which he played amazing guitars sometime back, so I took the opportunity to record a podcast with Jack which touches upon a myriad of subjects. We talk about the fact that we both have had the great honor to have written the number one and number two “worst songs” in mankind's history! Jack responds to hearing my upcoming new album (you'll learn the title of it here for the first time). I ask Jack about his new single release (we're talking UFO territory here), his recent brilliant solo albums, his famous “never released” album from the 90s, his Jazz work, his wilderness years, his musical philosophy and how he's matured as a writer, and get this - I even ask him about drugs and groupies! AND SO, SO MUCH MORE….. Bizarrely, Jack asked me to do his laundry as I interviewed him (he'd been on the road a long time!); I charged him $30! You'll hear the washing machine in the background ... that's what you get when you “Go Down The Rabbit Hole with Pagey”, because it's obvious, we're all quite mad here
So here we go again - the continuing saga of the Q.Feel drama…. More revelations will be revealed. The 80s is not a place - but a state of mind…. It's still 1982 and there are many strange and wonderful things happening in the world… But easily the most wondrous thing to happen is the release of the song, “Dancing in Heaven (Orbital Be-Bop)”, and the subsequent album, “Q.Feel”, by my techno new wave group “Q.Feel”. Let me take you all the way back to London in the 80s when I formed the band (with guitarist Brian Fairweather), and wrote and recorded the cult underground club hit, “Dancing in Heaven”, and then made the synthesizer-dominated debut album. It's a technicolor tale… Strap in for the ride. And remember - the 80s is not a place but a state of mind! Martin
Radio Owlsnest Episode 46 - “The Making Of The Q.Feel Album - Part One” It's 1982 and there are many strange and wonderful things happening in the world… But easily the most wondrous thing to happen is the release of the song, “Dancing in Heaven (Orbital Be-Bop)”, and the subsequent album, “Q.Feel”, by my techno new wave group “Q.Feel”. Let me take you all the way back to London in the 80s when I formed the band (with guitarist Brian Fairweather), and wrote and recorded the cult underground club hit, “Dancing in Heaven”, and then made the synthesizer-dominated debut album. Good ‘morrow my bright new things! I bid, “welcome OwlHeads”, to episode 45 of my songwriting podcast series. After the necessary health warnings are issued by the government (these shows can be hazardous to your health), I hope you can settle down and enjoy the rare demos offered freely at this month's feast. I'll start by playing you a song I wrote and recorded with the fine Welsh vocalist and artist, Steve Balsamo. It's a 16 track analog demo that I was very chuffed to discover in my rarities suitcase. Collaborating with Steve was a soulful experience… and it's lovely that we're still in touch after all these years. And I'm thrilled to play you a newish unfinished song I was writing for (and potentially with) Robbie Williams. After playing a soccer game with him he asked me to write some traditional folk songs for him. Yes, you heard right - Robbie Williams was planning to do a folk record with me. All Fiddles, harps, bodhrans, mandolins and roaring drunken sea shanties! Can you imagine … would have been fun. I'm more than a little enamored with this little rough home demo track I'll play you here. Remember the cult teen movie, “Say Anything”? I'll play you the original demo for a song that opened the soundtrack album…. and tell you the story of dumbfounded movie executives giving me the evil eye! I'll have a little fun playing you a brand new jam of an 80's-drenched track being written for my alter-ego band (Krautrock techno groove rules here). And I'll stay in the 80's to play you the original Fostex 8 track analog demo of the most successful song I've ever had the fortune to write ... I'm still amazed how this song continues to reverberate a good 40 years after it was written
Hello boys and girls - welcome along to another radio Owlsnest special! Join me as I investigate and excavate my intensely intimate solo album of 2021, “Fugitive Pieces”. Out of all the solo albums I've recorded so far, this one resonates profoundly for me. Of course, I'll get into the songwriting and the recording of the album, but I'll also touch upon the psychological aspects of its creation; particularly it's birth, which emanated from a need to combat a debilitating depression. The record was written and recorded over a three week period. I set myself the task of writing, in total, a song a day … lyrics were not written down. At the microphone, I sang and created from a stream of consciousness, relying on naked emotion and vivid memories to conjure the pictures. The songs relate to emotional touchstones in my life … personal relationships and the compound fear and deep joys that these connections printed and left upon my heart. It was me going back to basics - just sat at the piano. Simplicity and minimalism instructed the production. And my vocals were captured within the first three or four takes. I feel my singing on this album is amongst my best. Although this album resides rather under the radar within my collection (possibly because of its “down tone” and low key blue essence), it does feel to me as my most honest and real. I couldn't have conceived this project at any other time in my life, and I knew I could never again reproduce the spirit in which it was created - at request or on a whim. That three week period was wholly unique, and I sensed it would not, and could not be grasped again. I hope you can join me. I've wanted for quite some time now to tell the personal story of “Fugitive Pieces”. Martin
”Good day, dearest ‘OwlHeads'”. I pray you are all preening your feathers magnificently. I offer you here today Episode 43 of my songwriter podcast series … where my song vaults and archives are again raided for my rare demos, odds and sods and sonic misfits. This month's show features a little gem I concocted with the “Go West” boys, Richard Drummie and Peter Cox; I do remember quite special studio sessions with those lads. I'll play you a song I'm extremely proud of that I demoed with Earth, Wind and Fire's majestic vocalist Philip Bailey at the legendary EWF studios, “The Complex”, in LA. Great memories of working with a true gentleman of soul music. And I'll play you a demo of another amazing singer that I worked and wrote with, the peerless John Waite when he was leading the rock band “Bad English”. It's a spontaneous, raw, one-day home demo that, I have to say, gives the actual final master recording a damn good run for its money! There'll be a truly vintage retro playback of one of the first demos I ever wrote and recorded with my songwriter partner Brian Fairweather back in London in the late, hazy 1970s … a mono analog 2 track Revox recording of a song eventually recorded (if you can believe this) by the British “The Kenny Everett Video Show” dance troupe, “Hot Gossip”. I'm being very brave here, because the demo is as homemade and sonically compromised as can be imagined. Yet, weirdly, I still think Huey Lewis and the News back in the day could have done a great job with it!
Radio Owlsnest Episode 42 “Welcome to my faithful OwlHead brethren and sistren”. We gather here today to share episode 42 in the continuing saga of ‘bonkers' songwriter podcasts. All who pass here - surrender all sense of decency, normalcy and decorum. On this month's show, I'll be spinning some exceedingly rare retro demos, including an unheard collaboration with the fine songwriter/singer/artist Dana Glover. It's a taste of soulful southern gospel - sprinkled with a touch of modern production … a track that rather interestingly conjures up images of Italy and a young fashion model's life
Well, we are getting up there aren't we, my fellow OwlHeads - episode bloody 41! And I thought I was only going to record one solitary show
Welcome all “OwlHeads” to a radio Owlsnest special! Please join me as I investigate my solo alum of 2015, “Hotel of the Two Worlds”. I'll get into the songwriting and the recording of an album that allowed me to visit my early R n'B, soul and gospel influences. For me, personally, I think some of the songs on this record remain among my finest. So let's go together on a deep dive excavation of the many rooms of the “Hotel of the Two Worlds”. Pack your suitcase; I think you'll enjoy your stay…. Martin
We are back OwlHeads for a brand new season of rollicking antics! I'll be playing even more rare discoveries from my demo song archives… the journey into the vault will go even deeper! I'll be playing a very unusual track written with Bernie Taupin that eventually led towards the recording of his solo album “Tribe” - “White Boys In Chains”.. now there's a title for ya! I'll spin a demo written with soul man Paul Young; of all the tracks I wrote with Paul, this remains a favorite of mine that eventually made it onto his album “Other Voices”. I do love this demo. Can't resist playing you another ghost story of mine - you know I'm a sucker for the mists rising over the desolate moors. And I'm thrilled to discover a truly rare demo written in the 70s with songwriting partner Brian Fairweather that succinctly illustrates our respect and deep love for American soul music of that era. Incredibly, this particular demo was produced by Tim Friese-Greene - the musician and producer renowned for his work with the band “Talk Talk”…. who'd have thought. During the proceedings I'll take a moment to talk about all the bass players that influenced my career growing up. I'll rap about how I studied, emulated and learnt from the vinyl records these masters played on…. eventually becoming a pro bass man myself. I was surprisingly moved by talking about this apprenticeship period of my life… Within the various retro rarities I'll be playing today, I'll take a moment to pay tribute to a fine American songwriter who we sadly lost recently. The great Jon Lind. I wrote with Jon when I first came to the US and he was seminal in helping me break in America as a young songwriter. It feels special here today to reminisce about my great friend. So join me you feathered beauties as we start off a brand new season I'll try and make it good one! Martin
Radio Owlsnest Episode 38 - THE END OF YEAR SHOW! ‘Where did the time go, my noble OwlHeads? Another year has passed, another season has flown by (notice the pun), and here we are again - a year older, but as all “OwlHeads” know, we are a year wiser. I wanted to pull out all the stops for this festive extravaganza. Hence, some ridiculously rare demos will be revealed. I'm gonna spin an unheard, much requested song written with Bernie Taupin, “Welcome To The Retrohip” - now there's a title! It was a track destined for my second solo album, “In The Temple Of The Muse”, but somehow was left on the cutting room floor. You'll hear the studio live version. I've dug deep into the archives to play song demos from the technicolor-crazy 80s and the naughty 90s… tracks I was myself surprised to find, and I was suitably impressed. I have an emotional moment playing a song and demo I wrote and recorded with the great Maurice White of Earth, Wind and Fire… his voice struck home with poignant, soulful beauty. I was touched big time remembering him, particularly at this Christmas period. And a song written and performed with the mighty songwriter, Clif Magness (a song we penned with Michael Jackson in mind), will be spun as a ‘kindred spirit' to Maurice's emotional uplifting rendering. A rarity of rarities debuts as I play a song I wrote for the female band “Wild Orchid”, featuring the enigmatic, glamorous “Fergie” singing lead vocals. These girls brought bagels to my home studio during the writing sessions…. fond memories of being ‘mothered' and cooked for just before Fergie joined “Black Eyed Peas”. In between these musical fancies, I'll liberally disclose the facts about my youthful soccer/football career when I dabbled seriously in becoming a professional player with Southampton FC. A new track from a pagan folklore Christmas album I'm forever working on will be aired, and YES, what you've all been waiting for - Pagey becomes a crooner! I'll play a new half baked track I'm working on which encompasses the zeitgeist of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra…. Cigarette in hand, glass of wine at the ready - romance is ignited! I want to thank you “OwlHeads” for another fine vintage year of songwriter podcasts. You've made it all worth it - couldn't do it without you. Fly high - enjoy
Radio Owlsnest Episode 37 Gather ‘round, “OwlHeads”, gather around; it's time for another spectacular! This month's effort has a distinct feline flavor about it - my deep love and respect of cats permeates the whole proceedings. In particular, we will touch upon the brilliant art work of Louis Wain. I've recently been hugely inspired by a movie about him called, “The Electrical Life of Louis Wain”; his characterizations of the “furry tribe” are just iconic and magical. Hence, some of my song demos I play you today will be influenced by the animal kingdom. I will touch upon the 80's as well with some considerable gusto. I'll be playing some definitive vintage home demos I recorded during that technicolor period. One such very rare track that I penned with Bernie Taupin will be given its first ever airing - a song called “Union Jack” that I totally adore. It reeks of that vibrant era, when synthesizers ruled the world and we lost all fashion sense. I feel Bernie is at his lyrical best on this home 8 track recording. Within the frenetic pace of the show, I'll try and inject a little personal fact finding history with the story of the early pro bands I played in… my apprenticeship as a bass player that eventually led to me becoming a songwriter. Glorious mythological stuff! So join me for “The Electrical Life of Pagey”, and Let's have some fun! Martin
Radio Owlsnest Episode 36 Settle down with your hot cuppa - or in some cases I'm sure - harder stuff, dear “OwlHeads”…. for It's time to relax into episode 36! I just realized this show has many subliminal references to my bass playing, which is lovely, as that is where my music career started from. Somehow the “bottom end” doesn't get enough justice, but in this show we'll show it some well deserved reverence. I'll start off proceedings with a brand spanking new song which highlights my rhythm section playing with the great drummer Trevor Thornton. It's hard to believe we began playing together back in the 70s. I'll spin an outrageous demo I wrote for the well endowed page 3 girl, the irrepressible Samantha Fox. I'm being rather brave here because this highlights the manic, high energy, youthful “Pagey” ... an irrepressible creature himself from the distant past - when supersonic tempos ruled the world! It's a treat to play you the original cassette demo of the first “Q.Feel” single, “Doctor on the Radio”; The song that launched a thousand ships … I mean launched my professional songwriting and recording career. I'll introduce you to Chris Sutton, a singer that truly knocked me out - reminding me of the best of Alison Moyet and George Michael before he vanished into the ether - his apparently short career becoming an enigma. I'll play you a very rare 8 track Fostex demo we did together. Where is he now? Along with various other vintage tracks from my songwriting vault, I'll attempt to enlighten you regarding some little known facts about myself ... hard liquor is definitely mandatory at this point. And I'll play a special little demo of a song recorded by “Starship” that I wrote with Bernie Taupin (a personal favorite of mine) that conjures up a romantically dark story, haunted on the periphery by the band's own San Francisco home. So please be my guest today for episode 36
”Glory be to all “OwlHeads” - we gather here today to continue our investigations of “Pagey's” songwriting career. We start the show with a demo I wrote with Billy Burnette who had just joined Fleetwood Mac in the 90s… this very rare demo was aimed squarely at the Fleetwood Mac aesthetic; California here we come! I'll spin an early demo I wrote with Bernie Taupin around the time I wrote “We Built This City” and “These Dreams” with him. Although it's a technically-challenged vintage home recording, I love this obscure Taupin/Page track. It definitely has a Tears For Fears thing about it… I was writing songs around the Michael Jackson “Thriller” period, when ghouls and ghosts and zombies were all the rage (when were Zombies NOT the rage ???). I'll spin a demo Melissa Manchester recorded that I penned with Jon Lind called “Night Creatures”, on which I display my “Ghostbusters “
Join Martin for this in-depth study of the making of his 2012 solo album, “A Temper of Peace”. This Radio Owlsnest special will investigate the inspiration behind the 14 songs and the process of recording and mixing Martin's third album. A favorite of many of his supporters, “A Temper of Peace” holds a unique place in his oeuvre. From the opening sequence of “Halo” and “The Washing of the Heart” to the plaintive reggae of “Soulprint” to the final heartfelt message of “You can let Go” … this record becomes a journey towards “a temperance of peace”.
Welcome welcome welcome, my sweet dear OwlHeads, to episode 33. I love the number “3”, so this is a special little show for me. I start off with a Gaelic ode demo that brings to mind the “River Dance” aesthetic…. Ireland rules! Wear green while listening. I will also spin two homemade classic demos of songs that highlighted the US charts of the 80s! Still quite unbelievable to me that I penned these chart busting ditties. We'll touch upon the meaning of ecstasy … oooh … And we all want a bit of that, don't we! I'll spin a ridiculously rare Q.Feel track - You'll hear an 80s band working up a number live in the studio. Warts and all. Oh those technicolor 1980s. I will jam upon my new fascination - Quantum physics - which seems amazingly aligned with my deep love of Buddhism. Yes, crazy, but real synchronicity. You'll hear a very rare demo that I wrote with Bernie Taupin - a song that espouses our deepest eternal desires for “Love and Greed”. Surrounding these retro sonic escapades will be numerous rare musical musings from my VERY VERY VERY long songwriting career. History rocks! So please hang with me for a while - lay back - loosen up - and turn on. Let me inspire your inner creative demons …. and of course - angels. Martin
Well we're back to our normal format this month you lovely “OwlHeads”, which means demos galore. This episode is choc-a-block full of rarefied songs from my archives - a true antiquarian delight for those of you that appreciate the true retro vibes. I'll be spinning two collaborations with lyricist Bernie Taupin - one dealing with the tragedy of the 1986 space shuttle challenger… I was truly moved to find this special track; And I'll be playing a brand new piece that was inspired by the indigenous aborigines of Australia who believe that a meteorite named ‘Kulu' brought life to this earth - so get your experimental prog attitude on! I'm not a particularly political writer, but I'll spin a demo that reflects my distaste of world leaders and tyrants that go rogue; the catastrophic situation in Ukraine resonates here; and a beautiful soul track I wrote with the legendary and sadly missed Jon Lind will be given its first airing. I had great fun doing a “desert Island” disc section, where I choose the top ten albums I'd have to have with me if I was stranded; survival requires that a few more choices are thrown in for good measure… well, you can't just have ten can you! Peppering the proceedings will be many more unheard demos and rare versions from my song vault. It really is a retro-demo feast of a party! So join me for the fun gang… Martin
A Radio Owlsnest Special - Episode 31 - Part Three of Martin's interview with his manager Diane Poncher. So here ends the trilogy - sounds like a blockbuster movie series doesn't it! Part 3 of my interviews with my manager Diane Poncher. The story couldn't just end at Part 2 .. bloody ‘ell, no way. We've got to finish the long journey and get things straight. We continue on from where we left off during episode 29 - revealing the “behind the scenes” facts and myths of my later career. Secrets will be exposed! And we touch upon the writing, recording and making of my first solo album, “In the House of Stone and Light”. We spin some more of my songs that mean a great deal to us both, and we investigate and expound even deeper upon the theory of “partnership, creativity and union” within the ever changing cut-throat modern music business. By the way, we had a total - total BLAST recording this episode - join us! Martin
‘ A Radio Owlsnest Special - The making of ‘In the Temple of the Muse' - Episode 30 ‘ Let me take you back to 2008 when I released my second solo album ‘In the Temple of the Muse'. After the release of my first album ‘In the House of Stone and Light' it took me a bloody long time - yes ages - to release my next opus… on my own independent record label ‘Ironingboard Records'. It occurred to me that it was well time to tell the ‘OwlHeads' the story behind this rather homemade release. I still had some of the great musicians from the “House of Stone and Light” sessions involved with me … Jimmy Copley, Neil Taylor, Russell Broom, etc., and they helped make this album very special to me. It was quite an introspective album; my life had been impacted by the deaths of my parents and some friends - a reckoning of mortality at that time. I was determined to make a record that reflected my emotional state during that period… that hopefully others could, and would relate to. Feel. And in the process, some of the songs on the album were cut by major artists - including Robbie Williams, Elaine Page and Mickey Thomas. It proved to me that when you create something from experience and the wounded heart…. you are liable to connect - on a universal level. So dear OwlHeads let me guide you personally - intimately - track by track - song by song - through this sophomore album. I'll try to relate the magic, as well as the struggles, that made this record come together. Love Martin
It was a great pleasure to again interview my manager of over 40 years, Diane Poncher, for episode 29 of Radio Owlsnest. Join us for part two as we discuss every aspect of my career and our long standing partnership. We'll touch upon what it was like to be a female manager in a male dominated music business. You'll hear the stories behind many of my songs and collaborations… the business dealings behind them - the tough decisions and the battles; the relationships we made from the 1980s onwards - the good ones and the, shall we say, more challenging ones; the joys and the sorrows. We'll touch upon Diane's unique connection to my songs and my composing - a manager's belief and devoted support of an artist. And we'll spin some rare recordings that personally mean a great deal to both of us. For any of you interested in what a manager of a songwriter really does ; what the job entails… this is definitely for you. We expand chronologically forward from Diane's first interview with me (episode 23), continuing from where we left off. So sit back and enjoy part two of my fascinating interview with my longstanding manager, Diane Poncher. Martin
Good day to you my OwlHeads! Welcome to another feast of retro musical extravagances. This episode is chock-full of my demos ... a real jam-packed cornucopia of ancient song craft. I'll be introducing three, yes three, rare Bernie Taupin collaborations, one of which visualizes Robert Plant mixing it up with Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and another that conjures up the notion of T. Rex, Slade and Elton John rockin' together on a track called “Rubber Guns” (gotta say - I love that title!). How weird is that? Somehow the world of ‘Ducks' - yes, I'll say it again, Ducks - will permeate the whole proceedings… I know - madness abounds! I'll spin a demo of the first A/C hit I ever had (Adult Contemporary, that is), recorded at the very beginning of my songwriting career way back in the mists of time in a North London studio; a nod of thanks goes to Stevie Lange and Kim Carnes. And a ditty I wrote with Robbie Williams that was eventually recorded by him as a duet with Ireland's heartthrob, Ronan Keating, will be wheeled out in all its demo glory. As well as Ducks, UFOs will be circling the show. An extraterrestrial segment will ask us to suspend our cynicism and disbelief for a moment, and allow ourselves to ‘BELIEVE'. C'mon you know you really want to….. As I said at the top here, I'm playing more tracks on this show than I usually do; I was taken by an uncontrollable lust to reach ever deeper into my song vault to fill this hour to the brim with my ancient noises. So sit back OwlHeads and gorge yourself in demo Heaven. Martin
Aahhh - you thought you could get rid of me - didn't you - thought you could just ignore me… well no way - I'm bloody well back again! You can't keep a big mouth away from the microphone. Your biggest fears have been realized… season three of Radio Owlsnest is upon you; nowhere to hide - nowhere to run; so just curl up in a fetal position and pathetically surrender to the inevitable - resign your poor self to yet another season of PAGEY'S SONIC TORTURE. In today's show I'll be spinning yet another hidden demo written with Bernie Taupin during our era of frenetic collaboration. I'll also be revealing a long lost demo I wrote with another lyricist legend - the unmatchable Hal David. And the fine renowned studio session singer, Tommy Funderburk, demonstrates his considerable ‘chops' on a couple of my ancient, scarce demos. During the second half of the show, a definite Celtic/romantic atmosphere tints the proceedings, when I play you a fascinating hybrid of a song - a mongrel of a tune I was really intrigued to rediscover. You'll learn where my song “Man in the Moon” - from my album, “In the Temple of the Muse” - gained its initial inspiration, birth and concept. I think songwriters will find this particular demonstration highly captivating. So my trusted OWLHEADS - we're back in the saddle again for season 3 - 2022. I'm thrilled to be able to bring you some more hidden gems from the archives, and to relate the stories behind the songs. Please join me for the launch of season 3!
My God that year went fast! - when you're a vintage OwlHead such as I am… time is constantly accelerating past you; my wings can't flap fast enough
Martin shares stories and snippets from his forthcoming album, "The Occupation of Hope" to be released on Monday, November 15th on IroningBoard Records.
” Radio Owlsnest Episode 25 “ Please join me my feathered OwlHeads for another hour of random nonsense and mayhem. We're coming towards the end of season two, can you bloody believe it? This songwriter's podcast was just supposed to be one show… I'm sure you hoped it would be; but alas I'm here to play more rare demos from my vintage song archives. I'll be spinning a very early demo that reflects upon the perils of seeking success in the ‘City of Angels' (Los Angeles), where the bright lights can quickly turn into dark shadows. I had a glimpse of that when I first arrived in LA and hung out at a party frequented by members of a great soul band I worshiped … the incredible ‘Rufus'. I'll be stripping off ‘naked' - (psychologically that is) … when I play you a brand new song right at the beginning of it's very creation. Warts and all! Funny that still, after all these years of professional songwriting - playing a new idea can prompt a nervous breakdown! We artists are so bloody fragile! And I'll alight upon a fascinating occurrence when an original rough 16 track demo I'd written and recorded with the great Paul Young in my home studio, was transferred in its entirety to a 24 track in a professional Hollywood studio and became the total and absolute untouched finished MASTER on one of his successful solo albums produced by Don Was - a bit of slight of hand going on here folks - a true story of the pauper really becoming the prince,(musically that is!). Promoting the question …When is a demo a master and when is a master a demo … confusingly, hopefully all will be revealed. I'll be releasing the ‘Kraken' with an 8O's flashback track… beware! Our office mascot cat - the black ‘tuxedo' existential philosopher ‘Bootsie' will answer a distraught Japanese fan's nagging question about pursuing a career in Karaoke? Haven't we all desired at one time in our lives, to be a karaoke superstar …? Usually for me, it's when I'm in the shower. I'll also play a brand new solo track that contains many personal references… memories of my grandmother Vera come to the fore. So throw caution to the wind ‘thy noble OwlHeads', - be brave - and let yourselves be entertained for a wee hour in a most unconventional way. Glad to have you along for this very bumpy ride Martin
Hello all you gluttons for punishment - upon you here is the torture of episode 24. Gird your loins.. strap yourself in .. prepare to be entertained in the most undignified way. Rare demos from my dubious past, along with new songs from my notorious present, shall be trotted out in splendid madness. There's quite a collection of eclectic tracks featured in this month's episode. I'll spin a song I wrote in the 90s - a precursor to the ‘In the House of Stone and Light' album… when at last I was discovering my “artist's” voice and foraging for my identity as a solo singer/performer. We'll visit the 80s when I worked with the majestic songwriter Clif Magness… penning a rocker for the movie Caddyshack 2. I'll debut a track from my upcoming instrumental/ambient album and play a rare demo that was motivated by tragic circumstances occurring at my old secondary school back in England. Bootsie, our existential feline philosopher, will solve the mystery surrounding a rural farmer who is plagued by crop circles… and supernatural cows. What more could you ask for? And a truly rarefied demo is finally unleashed that brings my thoughts back to being bitten by ‘Lord Andrew'…. one of my loving cats, who most definitely left his mark upon me, jeopardizing one of my guitar playing fingers! So again I enquire - what more could you ask for? Sanity? Oh no, you won't get that! Spread your wings ‘OwlHeads' - talleyho!

Greetings my fellow ‘OwlHeads'! Here's a radio Owlsnest oddity for you - my first outtakes show featuring my great friend, band member and drummer Trevor Thornton. On a whim, I visited the files of the earlier show I had recorded with Trev way back (Episode 4), knowing we had spoken and recorded for well over two hours… wondering what hidden gems and insights I could discover there and what I had left out from the original show. My goodness what a revelation. I found some brilliant stuff. Trevor has been the drummer for Asia (with Steve Howe), Saxon, Q.Feel, Kim Wilde - even yours truly ‘ME' - along with countless other fine bands and artists. He was also involved in the groundbreaking iconic Def Leppard album ‘Pyromania'. So we had a tremendous amount to talk about; and, by God, these outtakes don't hold back - the floodgates open - uncensored! We talk about working with Nigel Green, Def Leppard's and Q.Feel's brilliant engineer; we alight upon his unique way of visualizing the sonic stereo field. We talk about being in punk-star-legend ‘Wreckless Eric's' studio band … preparing to record a breakthrough album with him … A very very strange time. We talk about Ringo and conspiracy theories. We discuss Trevor's most embarrassing moments on a drum kit - yes - there's more than one! And trust me…. you don't want to miss that. Hope you have a strong stomach. We recall a tense and difficult encounter with new wave band ‘A Flock of Seagulls' … can't believe the things we got up to back in those crazy 80s. And Trevor offers up numerous mind boggling SCOOPS during the proceedings - all for free - no session fee involved. Needless to say, this is truly a raw outtakes show with no editing… two madmen just going for it. My belly is still aching from the laughs. I'll also be spinning some historic demos from the distant past recorded with Trevor at the very beginning of our career together … as well as some brand new tracks that Trev is working on with me now. So stop what you're doing, OwlHeads - you won't want to miss this. OUTTAKE FEVER! Martin
Welcome again to my verbal nonsense, my inconsequential ramblings, my undisciplined musings … in effect, my songwriter's podcast! Episode 22, my friends; my word, we're getting up there. I had a great deal of fun doing this show, ransacking my song archives and generally playing the fool, which I admit, comes rather easily to me. The show starts with me meeting up with Ray Parker, Jr. in the 8O's at his studio, when I played keyboards on his ‘Ghostbusters' smash and, while doing that, played him a song of my own which he loved and wanted his band ‘Raydio' to record; I'll play you that ultra rare 8 track demo. I'll spin another hidden secret from the vault which allowed me to perform on my unique ‘Project P' nylon guitar that I had specially shipped over from Japan; it's a Latin flavored, exceptionally romantic ballad influenced by the life and travails of female painter Frida Kahlo. You'll hear me investigating the groove of early ‘hip hop' in the 90s on an unheard demo that somehow - rather alarmingly - brought back the visuals of a baggy trousered ‘MC Hammer' leaping frantically about - I became disoriented and dizzy for a while there. Bootsie, the infamous mascot cat, will again offer his supreme existential wisdom to the world. This time helping a Beethoven classically trained keyboardist who believes his playing is, well… just downright ‘shit'. I'll expound upon the time when I had just moved into my first house in California, an old stone cottage. The first song I wrote in that house was a haunting and disquieting experience. It was a song written with Bernie Taupin for a movie about ‘WITCHES!'. There was nothing in the house but my little home studio, which had been set up rapidly in front of an old stone fireplace in the empty living room; we were on a tight movie deadline, so I had started the song immediately, alone, as the sun set - my first night in my new (old) house. Needless to say, writing and singing about witches late into the wee hours in this gloomy unknown setting, was probably not the wisest thing to do. I'll play you the ‘massively rare' demo of the song that appeared from that nocturnal session…. creaking old timbers and witches' cackles, and my perceived fear, all included. So join me for episode 22 of Radio Owlsnest. Let's share a few giggles together. Martin
Hi there you sacred “OwlHeads”, it's time again to join me on a retro journey through my song/demo archives. Episode 21! Wish I was 21 again… still - there's no point in crying over spilt milk, is there. This month's show has some intriguing escapades, I fancy. We will travel into Edgar Allen Poe territory where a new song of mine reveals the story of America's first ever vampire…. creepy/good. My devotion to the 70s Motown chartbuster's albums I collected as a kid comes into focus, particularly the work of “Soul God” Marvin Gaye. I'll spin a more than rare demo I wrote with the man who penned ‘Boogie Wonderland' for Earth,Wind and Fire… when my European pop roots met LA sophistication for the first time. Bootsie helps a rich London lord get back his ‘mojo' - M'lord's elitist confidence was suffering, it seems. It's a pathetic, sorry tale. Staying with the soul vibes I'll play a brand new song that reeks of my admiration for the Average White Band and Gino Vannelli. I even attempt a pseudo Ernie Isley guitar solo !!! And - you'll witness a real emergency in my studio as it happens live on the air - when my world perception is shattered, when I realize that I don't live alone… that some other entity shares my bachelor pad with me. You'll witness a grown man panic and dissolve into a blob of vibrating jelly of fear. Not a pretty sight, I do admit…. Sprinkled throughout will be the usual suspects - tracks from the ancient song vault of my long career. Lovely to have your company sacred OwlHeads - lay back and strap on the headphones. Martin
“ Radio Owlsnest Episode 20 “ ‘Thank you OwlHeads for indulging me with the three part ‘In the House of Stone and Light’ specials... I hope you enjoyed them. Now we’re back to basics again... just me raiding the archives for rarely heard demos. And this month’s raid of the vaults is pretty intriguing. I’ll be playing you my first ever major label solo release - released just before the ‘In the House of Stone and Light’ album... a song that Lou Gramm of Foreigner wanted to record. My alter ego band King Skatterboxx will lay down the psychodynamic electric funk followed by the premier of a song featured on my imminent second solo instrumental/ambient album - “The Occupation of Hope”... a track that exhorts the virtues of taking a stroll with one’s father on an ancient Roman bridge in southern England. The wisdom of the Ironingboard record’s mascot and resident mouse catcher - Bootsie - will be called upon again, and society will be enlightened towards a more existential future. I’ll spin a rough track I’m very excited about that will feature on a future Martin Page edgy... black and white - politically toned future solo album. And it was great fun to find a demo written in the mists of time that encourages us, ecologically - to look at what we have ... and how lucky we are to be living on this little pale blue dot in the vast universe. And then I have a Peter Cox of Go West extravaganza... where I play two demo gems we composed during ‘The King of Wishful Thinking’ days... WE NEED TO GET GO WEST TO TOUR CALIFORNIA AGAIN. Hands up who agree... Go West - white T-shirts - suntans - Go West and California are just made to be together - RIGHT? So join me lads and lasses of the Owl brigade for episode 20. My God - “never thought I’d get my feet this far” - that’s a lot of shows for a lad who said he’d only record one. Come on in Martin

“ Radio Owlsnest Episode 16 “ Welcome home again to the musical nest, you crazy OwlHeads, it’s time for another episode of my slightly deranged songwriter’s podcast - in a place where you’ll only hear my demos, sprinkled with the odd brand new ditty (craftily thrown in there to prove that I’m really - yes REALLY - still alive!). Hard to believe, right? So, my feral OwlHeads, prepare thy selves for more retro shenanigans. In this month’s show, I’ll spin a new Q-Feel track that’s in the process of being written as we speak; I’ll showcase a spanking new track from a forthcoming instrumental/ambient album of mine that relates to the works of Gandhi; and I’ll play a totally rare, unfinished demo that I wrote and recorded with the great blue-eyed soul boy, Paul Young ... before he vanished, roaring into the night on his shiny new Harley Davidson. A curious unheard song I wrote in the naughty 90s with the legendary session singer Tommy Funderburk will be given its first ever airing.... (the ghosts of Roxy Music and Icehouse hover near). And, being a media fanatic, I’ll try and turn you to some new books and movies I’m investigating and enjoying. And a call-in by the notorious Southern belle, Lucy Cadillac, triggers the genius wisdom of Bootsie, the resident feline ‘know it all’. Profound consequences abound! So if you fancy a little break from this hectic, unforgiving, cruel world, you could do well to join me for a short while in the familiar, cozy Radio Owlsnest - where we shall together surrender to our most precious of indulgences - sweet creativity.
