Amy Rigby in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.amyrigby.com/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/Girl-City-Memoir-Amy-Rigby After playing with several New York bands she began a solo career, recording several albums which had only modest sales despite enthusiastic reviews. She settled into a career of touring while raising a daughter, then formed a duo with Wreckless Eric, whom she also married. As of November 2011 they continue to tour from a base in upstate New York. She is the author of a memoir, Girl to City.

Amy started out as an NYC punk fan, was in the "cow punk" band Last Roundup with her brother, and then in a vocal trio called The Shams that released an album and an EP around 1993. She finally emerged as a full front-person as a solo artist in 1997; she's since released nine solo albums plus three more with her husband Wreckless Eric, who now serves as her producer. We discuss "Bricks" from Hang In There With Me (2024), "Genovese Bag" by Amy Rigby and Wreckless Eric from A Working Museum (2012), and "Beer and Kisses" from Diary of a Mod Housewife (1997). End song: "Dancing with Joey Ramone" from Little Fugitive (2005). Intro: "Dark Angel" by The Shams from Quilt (1993). More at amyrigby.com. Hear more Nakedly Examined Music. Support us on Patreon. "Hang In There With Me" If you're an artist, you either move West or you move East. In the case of the Pennsylvania-born Amy Rigby, she went east. Landing in New York in the late seventies, Rigby absorbed the music of the city and took assiduous notes about punk rock, indie scenesters and the rhythms of the age. I'm zipping through time here, but if you want to know about Rigby's New York years, read her fabulous memoir Girl To City, which I think is one of the best books about music ever written. She later married Will Rigby of The DB's and played in bands like The Shams and Last Roundup, but it wasn't until the mid-'90s with her solo debut Diary Of A Mod Housewife that she began to flex her songwriting muscle. Hilarious, heartfelt and in many ways conversational, Rigby's work is intimate and familiar and over the course of her winning discography which includes albums like The Sugar Tree, Little Fugitive and her brilliant new one Hang In There With Me, Rigby has proven herself to be one of the most tunefully engaging songwriters on the planet. Her songs have been covered by everyone from Ronnie Spector to John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants, she's been praised by everyone from Mojo Magzine to Steve Earle and along with her husband Wreckless Eric, she's made a handful of flawless records. Hang In There With Me is a sterling set of more Rigby classics and frankly, she's never sounded better; nobody writes with such a perfect balance of candor and finesse. www.amyrigby.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

“The Wreckless Eric 1980 Sessions” - A Radio Owlsnest Special. I've been wanting to record this show for a very long time, and after re-mastering some precious vintage cassette demos, I feel the time is right to tell the story of working with iconic punk legend “Wreckless Eric” in 1980. Along with my songwriting partner of that period, Brian Fairweather, the three of us wrote and demoed 6 brand new cracking songs for a potential Wreckless Eric album to be released on the infamous Stiff records. The demos were recorded in my little London bedsit flat on a rudimentary analog 4 track tape machine set-up - as raw and primitive as you could imagine … but I believe these tracks have a very special undeniable power about them that reflect the zeitgeist of that era. And Wreckless (Eric Goulden) was in fine form lyrically and vocally on these (up to this point, never heard or released) extremely rare demos. We wrote and recorded these songs over a frantic period of three weeks in my minuscule bedsit featuring Brian on multiple guitars and effects and backing vocals, me on bass guitar and sparse keyboards and backing vocals, and Eric on rhythm guitar and lead vocals. And we used a first generation Roland CompuRythmn 68 drum machine for our drums. Dave Robinson, the head of Stiff records, was very excited and encouraged by our homemade efforts and set dates in a professional studio to record the songs (with Brian and I in the band) for the prospective new “Wreckless” album. But alas, tragically, it was not to be … Although full band rehearsals took place, and a producer (Bob Andrews of Graham Parker and the Rumour fame) was selected, and we even found ourselves set up in Battery Studios, London, waiting to record the album master tracks, Eric didn't turn up for the final sessions! After all these years, I still hear the potential of these raw songs. And I believe they portray the unique artistry of one of England's greatest eccentric punk artists and poets, at the very height of his creative ability. It's a story I've wanted to tell for a very long time. Martin Wreckless Eric Demos - All songs written by Eric Goulden/Fairweather/Page; Recorded by Martin Page (1980). ℗ 2023 Martin Page. Henry talks with Stuart Lloyd about his new book Started Out Just Drinking Beer: the Mental As Anything Story. The riotous rollercoaster ride of Mental as Anything, one of Australia's greatest bands from 1976-2019. The Mentals went from the top of a pool table to the top of the charts. Enjoy the untold stories behind Aussie classics like: Live It Up, Too Many Times, If You Leave Me Can I Come Too?, Berserk Warriors, Egypt, The Nips are Getting Bigger, and a whole lot more. Plus tales from the road as told by Greedy, Martin, Bird, Pete & Reg — and a star-studded cast including Colin Hay, Richard Gottehrer, Mark Opitz, Jeremy Fabinyi and Wreckless Eric — in this access-all-areas official biography.  ‘Love it!!! Brought up lots of memories. Thoroughly enjoyable.' – Kirk Pengilly, INXS. ‘This book gives us a big gulp of one of Australia's most uniquely talented and popular bands.' – Anthony (Tony) Field, The Cockroaches, The Wiggles. ‘Stuart Lloyd captures the alchemy that saw Australian bands flourish from the arid plains of our suburban lives. I loved the Mentals and I love this book.' – Dave Warner, author, Countdown: The Wonder Years, and 25 Years of Mushroom Records. ‘Takes us behind the showbiz curtain. A deep-dive beyond the colourful personalities and the larrikin-esque cheerfulness of a uniquely Australian band who have been the soundtrack of our lives for decades. Had me glued to each page.' – Jane Gazzo, music journalist and broadcaster. ‘An extraordinary and horrific portrait of five butchers who were country-killed specialists, shot through with black humour and near-naked burlesque attire.' – H. G. Nelson, comedian and broadcaster. This conversation was broadcast on 97.7FM Casey Radio in November 2023. Produced by Rob Kelly.

"Leisureland" Although he was born Eric Goulden in East Sussex, my guest today on the program is perhaps best known in the music industry as Wreckless Eric. Under that moniker he first garnered attention with his song The Whole Wide World, a shambolic blast of joyful punk that landed him a deal with Stiff Records. At the time, Stiff was just getting going and they had Ian Dury Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe on their roster. Not too shabby. The art school graduate was more than just one killer song--since the '70s he's cranked out almost ten perfect solo albums of scruffy pop magic that demonstrate Wreckless Eric is a singular and very special talent. His new album Leisureland is the perfect album to play while you're saying goodbye to summer. Wistful, nostalgic and equal parts ferocious and elegant, Leisureland is filled with ragtag pop, garage stomp, and percussive muscle augmented by beats and loops. And it's fabulous. Over the years he's played with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Damned, John Wesley Harding, The Proclaimers, and his wife Amy Rigby. His work has been covered by everyone from Cage the Elephant, to Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong. He's also been in a lot of bands like The Len Bright Combo, The Hitsville House Band, and The Donovan of Trash and the fact is, everything he does is wonderful and brilliant and infectious. The guy is the real deal. www.wrecklesseric.com www.bombshellradio.com www.embersarts.com STEREO EMBERS THE PODCAST Twittter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast EMAIL: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

(Ok, Japanese rock and roll is not so unusual in these parts, but you get the picture.) There’s also the usual mix of long-awaited returns (Uni Boys, Wreckless Eric), and new (at least to me) artists such as Hurry, Young Francis Hi Fi, and Dennis Cometti. There’s a set devoted to a trio of solo artists who have shared the stage countless times over the years (Brad Marino, Geoff Palmer, and Kurt Baker), and who always seem to have new records right around the same time. We also have a sneak peak of the upcoming Replacements box set, Tim: Let It Bleed Edition. The “cello version” of “Can’t Hardly Wait” was actually a Paul Westerberg demo with Twin/Tone secretary Michelle Kinney on cello. The box set comes out on September 22, and as you may imagine, I…ok, I won’t go with the obvious […]

“Shambolic” maybe an overused word when it comes to my favorite band, The Replacements, but it’s an apt term for tonight’s show. Or at least the first ten minutes. Yes, it’s a mini-disaster. After airing this week’s selection for the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks” series by The Vibrators, I talked about the fact that you can now purchase the version I world premiered last week by Jeremy Porter at his bandcamp. But after introducing a re-airing the tune, my broadcast program decided to completely rearrange my playlist and a completely different tune aired for a few seconds. Suenan: WRECKLESS ERIC - "WHOLE WIDE WORLD" ("WRECKLESS ERIC", 1977) / LARRY WALLIS - "POLICE CAR" (SINGLE, 1977) / CELIA AND THE FABULOUS MUTATIONS - "YOU BETTER BELIEVE ME" (SINGLE, 1977) / THE STRANGLERS - "HANGING AROUND" ("IV (RATTUS NORVEGICUS)", 1977) / CHRIS SPEDDING - "HURT BY LOVE" ("HURT", 1977) / PRETENDERS - "TATOOED LOVE BOYS" ("PRETENDERS", 1980) / JOE JACKSON - "THROW IT AWAY" ("LOOK SHARP!", 1979) / TOM ROBINSON BAND - "THE WINTER OF '79" ("POWER IN THE DARKNESS", 1978) / TONIO K. - "FUNKY WESTERN CIVILIZATION" ("LIFE IN THE FOODCHAIN", 1978) / NICK LOWE - "SHAKE AND POP" ("JESUS OF COOL", 1978) / ELVIS COSTELLO - "I'M NOT ANGRY" ("MY AIM IS TRUE", 1977) / GRAHAM PARKER & THE RUMOUR - "STICK TO ME" ("STICK TO ME", 1977) / THE SPORTS - "MAILED IT TO YOUR SISTER" ("RECKLESS", 1978) / MINK DEVILLE - "SHE'S SO TOUGH" ("CABRETTA", 1977) / Escuchar audio

The soundtrack was originally promoted as a Britt Daniel score, but it turns out that Brian Reitzell co-scored the film with Daniel as well as helming the role of soundtrack supervisor. They chat about the many Spoon songs included in the film, including the song "The Book I Write", which was written specifically for the film. They also discuss one of the pivotal scenes in the film where Will Ferrell covers Wreckless Eric's "Whole Wild World" in what may be one the more touching scenes in Will Ferrell's career, and they talk about how the film doesn't feel very 2006 and how the soundtrack plays a role in that feeling.

With today’s release of the Velvet Underground documentary on AppleTV it was pretty obvious what tonight’s Ledge was going to be. I just never relaized how easy it would be to comile a show consisting of nothing but Velvet Underground covers. I knew I had quite a few of these types of tracks, but I was shocked at just how many were in my collection. Besides the various one-off covers on quite a few records by the likes of the Beat Farmers, Wreckless Eric, and The Soft Boys, I also had quite a number of indie tribute records. I even had four records that completely covered the entire Velvet Underground and Nico album, including the brand new “I’ll Be Your Mirror” tribute. I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. Greetings my fellow ‘OwlHeads'! Here's a radio Owlsnest oddity for you - my first outtakes show featuring my great friend, band member and drummer Trevor Thornton. On a whim, I visited the files of the earlier show I had recorded with Trev way back (Episode 4), knowing we had spoken and recorded for well over two hours… wondering what hidden gems and insights I could discover there and what I had left out from the original show. My goodness what a revelation. I found some brilliant stuff. Trevor has been the drummer for Asia (with Steve Howe), Saxon, Q.Feel, Kim Wilde - even yours truly ‘ME' - along with countless other fine bands and artists. He was also involved in the groundbreaking iconic Def Leppard album ‘Pyromania'. So we had a tremendous amount to talk about; and, by God, these outtakes don't hold back - the floodgates open - uncensored! We talk about working with Nigel Green, Def Leppard's and Q.Feel's brilliant engineer; we alight upon his unique way of visualizing the sonic stereo field. We talk about being in punk-star-legend ‘Wreckless Eric's' studio band … preparing to record a breakthrough album with him … A very very strange time. We talk about Ringo and conspiracy theories. We discuss Trevor's most embarrassing moments on a drum kit - yes - there's more than one! And trust me…. you don't want to miss that. Hope you have a strong stomach. We recall a tense and difficult encounter with new wave band ‘A Flock of Seagulls' … can't believe the things we got up to back in those crazy 80s. And Trevor offers up numerous mind boggling SCOOPS during the proceedings - all for free - no session fee involved. Needless to say, this is truly a raw outtakes show with no editing… two madmen just going for it. My belly is still aching from the laughs. I'll also be spinning some historic demos from the distant past recorded with Trevor at the very beginning of our career together … as well as some brand new tracks that Trev is working on with me now. So stop what you're doing, OwlHeads - you won't want to miss this. OUTTAKE FEVER! Martin

There are times where a potential theme for a show pops up out of nowhere. This week’s episode of The Ledge is a perfect example. This past Wednesday afternoon I was on my way to a local record store, accompanied by a great power pop playlist on Spotify. Suddenly, a song came on that I hadn’t heard in many years. The tune was “I Need That Record” by Tweeds, a great under-appreciated 70’s power pop band  Besides the fact that this title was exactly why I was in my car at the time, it lit up a little light bulb in my head about a show devoted to songs about my favorite objects, records. It didn’t take long to put together the playlist. Wilco’s “Boxful of Letters” was an obvious pick. As were tunes by Todd Snider, Supersuckers, Nick Lowe, and Elvis Costello. iTunes searches came up with a vast majority of the rest of the tracks. But it was the discovery of an old Wreckless Eric track that secured the idea of this show. “33s + 45s” deals with the aftermath of a breakup, and the inevitable splitting of the music library. These lines hit me hard: “My dismantled […]

Brian joins me for a deep, crazy dive into our multi-faceted musical history together. You’ll hear how Brian escaped Glasgow, how we both owned plastic pink Beatles guitars, how Brian never ever had a hair cut, how we met up and formed Q.Feel together, fended off murderous roadies, nearly killed ourselves with exploding on-stage pyrotechnics, wrote an album with punk legend Wreckless Eric, carried suitcases full of cassettes that deeply unnerved people and how we willingly embarrassed and flaunted ourselves on Britain TV’s “Eurovision Song Contest” (with a furry, hairy-armed drummer). You will hear how we then miraculously found ourselves working with all the great American session musicians we’d studied and revered as kids - AND THEN, in short order, how we were writing songs and recording with the great Earth, Wind and Fire in the golden, unreal sun drenched land of L.A. Between these uneven and questionable revelations, we’ll be playing you brand new demos that we’re working on now. So join ”Fairweather/Page” as we take a bizarre, bumpy trip down a very long “memory lane”. Martin

New measles cases continue to decrease as the city's outbreak continues. In the latest data, there have been just 16 new cases reported in June 2019, down from highs in March and April of around 170 new cases per month. Combined with the outbreak in Rockland County, New York State continues to make up the largest percentage of the nationwide total, which, at 1,077 cases, has now surpassed numbers last seen 27 years ago and has become the largest outbreak seen since the disease was declared eliminated in the year 2000. No new information on the Midtown helicopter crash as the NTSB continues their investigation, but the incident has stoked local officials to criticize the conditions that led to the crash: Carolyn Maloney, the Congressmember who represents the district where the helicopter came down renewed her calls for private transit and tourism helicopter flights to be banned over the city. After a deadly helicopter crash atop the Pan Am building helipad in 1977, flights to helipads in Manhattan were banned, but no new restrictions have been put in place despite multiple deadly crashes around Manhattan by helicopters and small planes. In a statement on Representative Maloney's web site, she says: "We cannot rely on good fortune to protect people on the ground. It is past time for the FAA to ban unnecessary helicopters from the skies over our densely packed urban city. The risks to New Yorkers are just too high." Senator Chuck Schumer also called on the FAA to require helicopters be equipped with flight data recorders, and cited years of recommendations from the NTSB that the FAA should mandate flight data and cockpit voice recorders. Schumer noted how the lack of flight data will now impede the investigation. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand added: "After last week's helicopter crash in midtown, the FAA should immediately reconsider the recommendations federal transportation safety investigators have urged since 2011 and take steps now to implement these basic safety features. Flight data recorders provide critical information to help prevent future crashes, and I urge the FAA to act quickly to ensure black boxes are in every helicopter." A memorial service was held for the helicopter pilot, Tim McCormack, in Poughkeepsie, NY. This week finally brought the sad confirmation that a swimmer has been found dead after going missing during a race in the Hudson River. Renowned AIDS researcher, Charles van der Horst, had been competing in the Eight Bridges Hudson River Swim, a 120-mile, week-long competition that was scheduled from June 8th to June 15th, with swimmers covering about 17 miles per day between Hudson River bridges. On Friday, June 14th, Charles had disappeared beneath the water near the George Washington Bridge and did not resurface. His disappearance occured at the end of that day's swim, which had begun 15.7 miles away at the Tappan Zee Bridge. The Coast Guard and NYPD boats began searching immediately, but it wasn't until four days later that his body was discovered near Fort Tyron, north of the GWB. In a statement from the van der Horst family, Charles is described as living life to the fullest and will be remembered for his work in social justice and in the medical field. He immigrated to the United States as an infant from the Netherlands, and was the son of a Holocaust survivor. As a professor of medicine, he provided care to HIV/AIDS patients, contributed meaningful research concerning the diseases, and volunteered at a free clinic after his retirement. When Charles disappeared, he was under the watch of safety crew in kayaks following each swimmer, and another participant describes the extreme care taken to ensure the safety of each swimmer, so it was unclear how this tragedy took place. Last week I told you about the very first roller coaster that was modeled after a mine cart, but 92 years ago on June 26, 1927, The Coney Island Cyclone wooden roller coaster opens to the public A baby doll wearing a "Crawling Dead" t-shirt was realistic enough to be officially pronounced dead by first responders after an early-morning 911 call on June 18th. A jogger spotted the horrifying scene of a baby lying face-down in the grass at 215th Street and 35th Avenue in Bayside, Queens and police quickly arrived to seal off a crime scene. It wasn't until hours later that officials announced it was actually realistic doll that they had earlier pronounced dead without physically inspecting it. In a statement, the FDNY described the doll as having "discoloration consistent with signs of prolonged death" as it was painted gray and blue to simulate loss of oxygen. Once the doll was physically inspected, the ruse became known, and the doll was found wearing a shirt that said "Crawling Dead", presumably a play on the classic horror film "The Walking Dead". The police have opened an investigation into who placed the doll and if it was intended as a prank. Chatting With Sherri welcomes singer/songwriter; Amy Rigby! Amy Rigby has made a life out of writing and singing about life. With bands Last Roundup and the Shams in eighties NYC East Village to her solo debut Diary Of A Mod Housewife out of nineties Williamsburg; through a songwriting career in 2000s Nashville and during the past decade with duo partner Wreckless Eric, she’s released records on visionary independent labels Rounder, Matador, Signature Sounds and reborn Stiff Records as well as her and Eric’s own Southern Domestic Recordings.  The Old Guys, her first solo album in a dozen years, measures the weight of heroes, home; family, friends and time. Philip Roth and Bob Dylan, CD/cassette players, touring, the wisdom of age and Walter White, groupies, Robert Altman, egg creams and mentors are paid tribute. Twelve songs written by Amy and recorded by Wreckless Eric in upstate New York, The Old Guys is the sound of a good girl grown up, never giving up. “Her whimsical, often autobiographical songs are masterful. Funny and enticing, she is up there with the likes of Paul Simon and Randy Newman.” — New York Times

Our latest guest may be German, but he's clearly something of an Anglophile, having made a Bond film, the Peter Pan inspired Finding Neverland, and now a new take on the British cultural institution that is Winnie The Pooh. Perhaps most importantly, Marc Forster is a total audiophile too!  Marc's Christopher Robin is a delightful live-action addition to the Disney franchise, with Ewan McGregor in the leading role and Jim Cummings, Toby Jones and Sophie Okonedo among those providing the animal voices.  It also features 3 original tunes by Richard Sherman, the legendary Disney songwriter. Christopher Robin is dedicated to composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who had already started scoring the film when he passed away so unexpectedly at the age of 48. So, at the eleventh hour, Jon Brion and Geoff Zanelli stepped in. You'll hear plenty of their exceptional work throughout the conversation, as well as tracks by Spoon, Muse, Chris Cornell, Wreckless Eric and more.

Ian Marchant travels back to Newhaven in East Sussex, to learn to see a familiar landscape through fresh eyes. He grew up round here, bunking off school with his mates on the South Downs and the derelict Newhaven Fort (now beautifully restored). There's a weird mix of things to look at in panorama here: a glimpse of the iconic Seven Sisters (white cliffs, anyone?), stereotypically English rolling green hills, the industrial business of the ferry port to Dieppe and a new and massive biomass incinerator that upset local residents when it was built. But it's all potentially beautiful, depending on how you look at it. While his friends the Bugman, the Starman and the Painter were all busy looking at bugs, stars and landscape, what was Ian doing? Since he left the town, the South Downs has become a National Park and the air above it is now an International Dark Skies Reserve. It's time for Ian to return to the birthplace of Wreckless Eric to find out.

Well, not really. We do talk about metal and then separately about cephalopods. The title just sounded cool. This week, we have beers from Toppling Giant and Ale Asylum. Plus; new records from Vastum, which spins out into a whole discussion on metal, violence, and art. Plus, The Foxymorons, Wreckless Eric, and Grimes. Someone on the podcast really loves Grimes. Then we've got a couple of quick opinions on Made of Oak, the recent Bob Dylan Bootleg release, and garage pop/rockers The Muscadettes. 1993’s The Donovan of Trash, just might be Eric Goulden as his most unhinged — which is, naturally, saying a lot for a guy who’s borne the “Wreckless” qualifier since the late 70s. It’s rough and fuzzy — a cardboard box was involved percussion at one point in the process. It’s a sort of lost low-fi, shambolic masterpiece, finally back in print for the digital age, alongside its contemporary, the also terrific Le Beat Group Electrique. The reissues, thankfully, shine additional light on period of Goulden’s career that seems forever destined to take a backseat to the early Stiff Records output that gave the world his best known hits, “The Whole Wide World” and Semaphore Signals. The singer took it upon himself to shed even more with a short US solo tour that capped off with an intimate but sufficiently energetic set at Manhattan’s Mercury Lounge, power through a set on less than pristine instruments older than many of this in attendance. I sat down with Goulden in the short space between soundcheck and showtime to discuss his long and fascinating career on the fringes over a bowl of overpriced New York City chili.

The charts and new releases are back, as is Auntie Sarah.Bob plugs the Thameside Supper Party at the Shepherd's Bush Village Hall  (photo) near the BBC  next Friday which will have a "tramps" theme. Dave says it will be messy and mentions custard pies. (As I recall it it was very messy)The Fast Food came from Harrow on the Hill where Alex and Dave took the listeners to a Wimpy Bar where the food proved to be pretty unpopular due to the soggy chips and dry burgers (and the strange taste). The survey ended up with a laughing competition. Bob plugs a gig by Dumpy's Rusty Nuts in CarshaltonBob forgot to pick up the mail so Sarah only has phone dedications to read out. All her songs come from 1971.Mark interviews Wreckless Eric. Bob's show overruns so Dave starts late and then his sho stops beacuse the station was raided. Again.
