Welcome to the feathered brotherhood who join me today for Episode 47 of the Radio Owlsnest syndicated blockbuster world dominating songwriter podcast series … Ahhh - not really. In truth, it's remained an intimate, small, close knit village concern which has been lovely for me to host over the last few years. So thank you to you “OwlHeads” who have given me your ears so consistently and graciously. I'll start proceedings off by playing a very rare demo I wrote with fine female lyricist Terry Cox, which surprised me how ‘Elton John' it sounded after all these years. I was beginning to write with Bernie Taupin at that time and I think the aesthetic was rubbing off on me a little. Dusting this demo off after all these years was illuminating to me. I'll spin a track I'm preparing for volume 3 of my, “The Poetry of Collisions” demo/odds and sods compilation series/releases; a song title that refers to the suffering-laden cyclic nature of death and reincarnation - no beginning no end … Bugger me, that sounds heavy and fun! But have no fear my friends, my song relates to a beautiful woman and lover. And it's my great pleasure to play a track in progress - an unheard song I was writing with the great Wang Chung man Jack Hues. I was watching the Beatles, “Get Back” documentary recently (again), and was fascinated at how Paul McCartney conjured up the song, “Get Back”, from nowhere; It made me remember a track I was writing with Jack - how we were creating it ‘live' and organically on the spot. It's called “Big Cathedral” and it's a great track we never finished; I'll play you it's very birth, warts and all. It's a great illustration of how inspiration hits as you jam - improvise - perform. My motivational talk this month is about just that, ‘Motivation'! What motivated me to be a songwriter? What drove me on, what inspired me to dig deep and to make my dream materialize; what made me never give in when disappointment reigned - what was the essence of my desire. I think a few of you budding song crafters out there might find this section of the show a touch interesting. Scurrying around the dark song archives, I found a terrific demo I wrote and recorded with the mighty Clif Magness, a track eventually recorded by Eric Martin for a movie soundtrack. It's hard to believe it's an 8 track analog demo - such is Clif's magnificent production values and lead singing. Sometimes the demo beats the master! And amongst other ditties from my demo song vaults, I'll play a brand new song I've just finished for a forthcoming solo album I'm preparing. I'm very proud of this new piece - it has a personal psychological spirit about it ... I hope you like it. It's time for you to become an “OwlHead” again. Settle back - enjoy the show. Martin

“Going Down The Rabbit Hole with Martin Page” A Conversation with Jack Hues Please join me for an extensive interview/conversation with “Wang Chung” lead man Jack Hues. He was in Los Angeles on tour and stopped by my home studio for a personal playback of my upcoming new album, on which he played amazing guitars sometime back, so I took the opportunity to record a podcast with Jack which touches upon a myriad of subjects. We talk about the fact that we both have had the great honor to have written the number one and number two “worst songs” in mankind's history! Jack responds to hearing my upcoming new album (you'll learn the title of it here for the first time). I ask Jack about his new single release (we're talking UFO territory here), his recent brilliant solo albums, his famous “never released” album from the 90s, his Jazz work, his wilderness years, his musical philosophy and how he's matured as a writer, and get this - I even ask him about drugs and groupies! AND SO, SO MUCH MORE….. Bizarrely, Jack asked me to do his laundry as I interviewed him (he'd been on the road a long time!); I charged him $30! You'll hear the washing machine in the background ... that's what you get when you “Go Down The Rabbit Hole with Pagey”, because it's obvious, we're all quite mad here

This is a recording from the Academy of Ideas' Arts and Society Forum, held on Wednesday 17 May 2023. English singer-songwriter Jack Hues discusses his varied musical career, key influences, inspirations and motivations – and shares his insights on how music is faring in our fast changing world and the culture war. Hues' musical career and influences straddle popular and classical genres, from the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix to Stravinsky, Beethoven and beyond. Having studied music at Goldsmiths and the Royal Academy of Music, and then launching his career in the late 1970s, as frontman of New Wave band Wang Chung, Hues enjoyed chart success in Britain, Europe and especially the US. He has never stopped creating music. After several years of touring Wang Chung during the 1980s, Hues moved onto creating solo pieces including a number of film scores in the 1990s. In the early 2000s, he co-founded the jazz-influenced The Quartet, which released two albums, both to critical acclaim. Between 2020 – 2022, he released two solo albums, Primitif and Electro-Acoustic Works 20:20 and most recently a double live album with members of The Quartet, rock band Syd Artrhur and free jazz exponents Led Bib entitled “Epigonal Quark”, all receiving warm critical acclaim. He has also taught songwriting at Christ Church University in Canterbury. Music fan and democracy campaigner, Niall Crowley, explores a wide range of issues with Jack Hues, including how the music industry is evolving under changing political and social pressures; innovation, radicalism and conservatism in music; whether now is a good or bad time for music and budding musicians; and what is happening to music education.

Jack Hues has had a career that most musicians can only dream of. He studied at the Royal College of Music, he recorded sessions for John Peel, he topped the U.S. charts, scored major Hollywood motion pictures and is now, finally, releasing his first solo album, the double LP, PRIMITIF. PRIMITIF will be released on March 20, 2020. PRIMITIF is the culmination of a career that has spanned 40 years and has seen Jack visit all four corners of the Earth, but we start our journey in Kent. Jack grew up in Gillingham in the Medway Towns about 40 miles southeast of London. He was interested in music from an early age. “My dad was a saxophone player and my grandfather was a musician too, but it was hearing ‘Please Please Me’ by The Beatles on the radio when I was about 8 years old that made me wake up and think…ahhh, so this is MY music.” Jack asked for a guitar that Christmas and while his parents agreed, they insisted he have proper lessons. Twice weekly Jack was taught classical and folk guitar and, unusually, how to read music, a skill that would serve him well many years later. “By the time I was 18, I had passed Grade 8 guitar and got a place at Goldsmiths College, London to study for a music degree. At this stage I knew very little about classical music. It was David Bowie and early ‘70s Prog that was my focus. The lines between genres were about as loose as they have ever been. Classical music didn’t seem remote, although I was turned down by 4 out of the 5 universities that I applied to, as Rock music was considered worthless by academics at that time.” Jack got his degree and won a BBC Composers Competition which enabled him to take a year at the Royal College of Music studying composition and electronic music. “Those four years immersed in classical music, particularly modern classical music, were very important and expanded my musical horizons immensely. However, when I came out of college the musical language I ‘spoke’ was rock music, albeit a highly seasoned vernacular.” Jack played in a variety of bands until he met bassist Nick Feldman through a Musicians Wanted ad in the Melody Maker. They formed a couple of bands before finally distilling their talents into Huang Chung. The band later renamed themselves Wang Chung at the suggestion of the head of their record label, David Geffen. “The name still comes up now. It was even on Saturday Night Live a couple weeks ago. I guess David was right.” Jack wrote the future hit-to-be, “Dance Hall Days”, while still teaching guitar at various schools around London. The song proved pivotal in the band’s development and established Wang Chung as an international success. They were signed direct to Geffen Records in the U.S., so Jack’s career was based in LA throughout the ‘80s. “I was fortunate to work on movie soundtracks during this time. William Friedkin (director of The French Connection and The Exorcist) commissioned us to score his movie, To Live and Die in LA, which was an incredible opportunity. We contributed songs to The Breakfast Club and Inner Space. In 1986 we had a Billboard #2 (Cashbox No. 1) hit in the U.S. with “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” whose chorus line ‘Everybody have fun tonight, Everybody Wang Chung tonight’ continues to capture the public imagination thirty years later.” 1987 saw Wang Chung on a coast to coast U.S. tour with Tina Turner and gigs all over the world, but by 1989, the times they were a’changing and the attention of the music business turned to grunge and hip hop. The band didn’t embrace either of those genres and eventually split in 1990. "Through the ‘90s I did various projects. I scored The Guardian for Bill Friedkin. I was the only composer to ever work for him twice! I recorded a solo album for Columbia in the U.S., but for various reasons the project foundered. I produced an album for Arkana and an EP for Arturo, working with Mick Glossop. I co-produced a couple of albums with Chris Hughes for The Definition of Sound and Gene and I formed Strictly Inc. with Tony Banks (of Genesis) to record his eponymous solo album.” For a change of scenery, Jack moved from London to Canterbury in 1998, only 25 miles away from where he was brought up, and with it came a new phase of his life which started to coalesce around Jazz. In the mid-nineties Jack met Sam Bailey and formed The Quartet, recording 2 albums Illuminated and Shattering with producer Chris Hughes on his Helium Label. In 2012 Wang Chung reformed and released their first new album in twenty years called Tazer Up!. Summer tours in the U.S. followed, but after a couple of years Jack stepped back from gigs to consider what he really wanted to do as he entered his seventh decade. “I released a trilogy of collaborative albums between 2013-18. My ‘jazz’ work tended to be instrumental, focusing on my guitar playing, but meeting and working with poets revived my interest in words and music. “ROTE-thru” is probably the most extreme experiment consisting of a long semi-improvised poem spoken by David Herd and Simon Smith set to music which I composed as 12 separate sections to be played in any order. “A Thesis on the Ballad” to poems by Kelvin Corcoran is more conventional, setting his words to song-based structures, but including space for improvisation.” Last, but not least, Jack recorded an arrangement of Beck’s “Nobody’s Fault But My Own” with his Quartet and members of Canterbury Prog band, Syd Arthur, plus Paul Booth on tenor sax. The recording was released in 2019 to critical acclaim. Also in 2019, in a parallel universe, Jack recorded and released an album of orchestral versions of Wang Chung songs entitled Orchesography to enthusiastic reviews. Due to a series of personal losses, Jack found himself more concentrated on music than ever. In the first 3 months of 2018 he wrote and recorded most of PRIMITIF. When asked to name the music that led him to the album, classical composers such as Schubert, Mahler and Debussy rub shoulders with Miles Davis, Robert Wyatt, Jon Hopkins, The Books and Lana Del Rey. He also wanted to design the album specifically as a 4-sided, double vinyl album, each side having a distinct character in the manner of The Beatles’ White Album or Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland. “I worked on the album through 2018-19 with another intensive period of writing and recording at the beginning of 2019. The resulting double album is my first-ever solo release and is, for me, the culmination of nearly 60 years of fascination and ultimately, obsession with Music and Recordings.” Music Videos: "A Long Time" - Jack Hues "Whitstable Beach" - Jack Hues

Happy New Year my fellow OwlHeads! May it be a good one for us all. So what better way to start than a brand new episode of Radio Owlsnest....here it is - episode 3 in all its crazy uncontrolled, disorganized glory. This show includes more odds and sods and misfits from my deep cobwebbed song vault. A rare 80s demo recorded for the Commodores, a futuristic demo with Jack Hues (of Wang Chung fame), alternate mixes from my albums and new sonic experiments. Of course the annoying but somewhat beloved quiz makes its routine visit, and I, as usual - spew forth nonsense and totally erratic thoughts. If you’re nursing a prolonged hangover from the festivities - turn away now and don’t look back! But if you’re in the mood for a cozy late night radio show... grab the comfy chair - fold your busy wings and hibernate into 2020 with Pagey. Steve Cooper talks with musician Jack Hues. Jack is best known for being the lead singer and guitarist for the band Wang Chung. Between 1983 and 1987 Wang Chung had five Top 40 hits including Dance Hall Days, Everybody Have Fun Tonight and Let's Go. The band recorded the soundtrack for the film To Live and Die in L.A. and had a song in John Hughes' movie the Breakfast Club. They have broken up and gotten back together over the years and recently released Orchesography which is a greatest hits compilation recorded with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. He also plays with the jazz influenced Jack Hues Quartet.

The English New Wave / dance pop band, Wang Chung, formed in 1980, and rode a wave of success in the mid-'80s, with such hits as "Dance Hall Days," "Everybody Have Fun Tonight," and "Let's Go," along with the soundtrack to William Friedkin's 1986 crime thriller To Live and Die in L.A., as well as "Fire in the Twilight" from the soundtrack to The Breakfast Club. In the decades since, the band's music has become synonymous with the '80s, and featured in dozens of films and TV shows. This Friday, May 10, Wang Chung releases Orchesography, which sees original members Jack Hues and Nick Feldman recording reimagined versions of their classic cuts with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. I spoke with Jack Hues by phone about all this and more.

Wang Chung scored some of the biggest, and most ubiquitous, hits of the 80s with seminal songs like "Dance Hall Days," "Let's Go," and, the mother of all 80s hits, "Everybody Have Fun Tonight". Though Blender magazine may have ranked that hit the 3rd worst song of all time, it's never gone away and is as well known today as it was 30 years ago. Jack and I talk about how that song came to be and how it's affected his life. We also go deep on the rest of his career, his relationship to touring, his many side projects, his upcoming solo album, and his soundtrack work for To Live and Die in L.A. and the Breakfast Club. Hopefully, you'll learn some things you didn't know before!   http://www.wangchung.com/

Colin Marshall sits down in Canterbury, England with Jack Hues, founding member of the rock band Wang Chung and jazz band The Quartet. Wang Chung's latest album Tazer Up came out in 2012, and The Quartet's next album Collaborations Volumes 1 & 2 comes out this fall. They discuss what makes the "Canterbury sound"; the differences between Wang Chung's "English" and "American" albums; what recording in another city or country, and drawing in its "vibe," gives a project; music as a language, and how different styles of music feed into each other as do different languages; the "librarian mentality" that has many of his students talking initially about musical genres rather than about musicians; what growing up with the Beatles made possible; his Haruki Murakami reference in Wang Chung's "City of Light", and how he works into songs other things simply happened upon in life; his formation of The Quartet after 9/11; how he gets to balance teaching, The Quartet, and Wang Chung now that the latter doesn't demand an all-consuming lifestyle; how only his American students ask about Wang Chung, and how nearly all of them have internalized the form of the "pop song" unconsciously; critics' misguided fixation on lyrics; Wang Chung's use of unusual chords, and what makes some music generally more interesting than other music; whether the world of 1980s pop music could accommodate the darker side; art's emergence from constraints, and how he goes about imposing them on The Quartet; the experience of revisiting "Dance Hall Days" for a remix; whether Wang Chung would play "Rising in the East" if someone shouted it out; the musical place where Wang Chung and The Quartet meet; how to enjoy feeling like an outsider yet use roots as an artist; and the reaction drawn at a recent Wang Chung show: "Wow, you guys are real musicians!"
