The Feeling Sound Podcast Season Three - Episode Five Raised in Glasgow and now living in the city of Toronto, guitarist Neil Clark played with many bands in his original home city, including Newspeak with Alan McGee and Andrew Innes, before meeting Lloyd Cole and Blair Cowan, with the three forming the nucleus of Lloyd Cole and the Commotions.  They recorded three studio albums, Rattlesnakes, Easy Pieces and Mainstream, and Neil was co-writer of some of the groups best-known songs - Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken, Rattlesnakes and Lost Weekend, while also playing the multi-layered guitar coda to Forest Fire.  He has remained a regular collaborator with Lloyd Cole over the years, including contributions to his past two albums Guesswork and On Pain. In addition to his work with Cole, he has recorded with many other artists internationally. Recent projects include Lake and Sea with singer Theresa McKay, post-jazz trio Clark, Jones and Pottie and the solo album, Sundogs.- all of which can be found at neilclark.bandcamp.com. We caught up with Neil at his Toronto home, where we talked about his incredible musical journey, the stories behind some of the tunes that make up the phenomenal Commotion's back catalogue, touring … and above all else, what music means to him.

Greetings oh feathered beauties! I am back with more hidden bounty from my ancient song archives. More rare demos, sonic experiments and even a brand new track will hopefully charm your “OwlHead” ears. It was wonderful to work back in the day with the fine singer/songwriter/guitarist Hamish Stuart of the iconic band, “The Average White Band”. I'll start off the show by playing you a track we wrote together that became a single for his band, “Easy Pieces”; A cool psychedelic soul number that I now think was somewhat influenced by the “Prince” aesthetic. Of course, Hamish went on to work with Paul McCartney and is now presently with Ringo Starr … so it was lovely to discover and spin this little gem from our past. For the songwriters out there, I'll play two demos I was working on with Robbie Williams - two rough home demos of the same idea, which illustrates quite well how I develop a concept. I think you'll find it very interesting how my demos were presented and constructed for Robbie … to inspire and encourage him to engage and develop an idea with me. And here's a treasure for all Jack Hues (Wang Chung) fans: I'll play the cassette demo of a song we were writing together for his (so far) unreleased renowned solo album “The Anatomy Lesson”. It's a very, very COOL track … and, although we are loosely jamming and it's just rough and ready, the potential of this song is self evident. Because the re-ignition of the “Pagey Quiz” lit up the internet and caused traffic to stop during last month's episode, I will be asking you three more incredibly hard brain curdling “Pagey” questions. These are conundrums from which I believe even the most wise OwlHead will cower away - fearing that investigating these questions could cause neural problems. Beware - approach with extreme caution. I'll spin a terrific London-recorded demo - a song I wrote and performed with Brian Fairweather that Kim Carnes eventually heard and recorded on her album, “Cafe Racers”. It became “Fairweather/Page's” first top ten adult/contemporary hit in America … and listening to it today, I'm very proud of the Doobie Brothers/Pointer Sisters swing and irresistible groove we achieved on this particular demo. I always like to include a new song I've just written if I can on these shows, and I'm happy this month to present a song called, “How”. I hope you like it and that it speaks to you. Bloody hell, this is the penultimate episode 49, we are nearly at the final 50th show; who would have thought, “I'd ever get my feet this far”.

Episode #151: Mystery  (Song starts at 3:24 ) This song (#499) was originally titled 'The Medium' I wrote it about the time I went to visit a clairvoyant person for the 1st time. I decided to change it to 'Mystery' at a later date. I guess I thought the new title might get the song listened to more. Crash Test Dummies had a song about this subject, on a great album of theirs God Shuffled His Feet. I suppose that sort of gave me permission to write something similar. To be honest, I wasn't quite sure what I would talk about when this song popped this week. It's a very personal thing to experience and I think it pays to be discerning in terms of what you choose to share at times. As it turns out, it was easy to talk about the experience I had. The crux of this song is in the chorus where I sing ‘ I want to say thank you' - because that's precisely what I wanted to say to this person who helped at a time when I really needed a hand. It was a nice feeling, singing and playing this gentle song as part of this episode. It flowed easily. That's my memory of how the song came through, to. The words came easily, first. The last couple of verses came to me as a reflection of this time later in my life. It was such an interesting experience. We tend to view ourselves a certain way for part of our life, then something happens and we unfold a little more and our perspective changes. This song is about a time of some personal transformation in my twenties. I was searching, really - finding my own path. The music came very quickly, as easily as the words. The two parts sound very natural, then. Not forced. Which I think is a big part of what could be deemed to be a successful bit of songwriting. I'm pleased I shared this song. It's been tucked away for years, although, I did sell about 30 copies of an album I called ‘12 Quiet Songs' in 2005. Back then, I'd recently found a great Jimmy Webb album, ‘10 Easy Pieces'. I can really relate to Jimmy Webb's song writing style. He sang his songs on this album himself ( his songs have been recorded and released by all sorts of wonderful artists such as Glen Campbell). Maybe I'll re-record this album again, one day. That'd be fun. This is one of the things about recording the episodes for this podcast. It's all a work in progress. I'm enjoying the complete unknown aspect about each episode, as I'm talking and playing without a script or more than a general plan of having a chat and sharing a song. It is indeed a mystery how the episodes come together, much like songwriting. I'm looking to bring some light to the songwriting process. I'm not looking to take away the mystery, though - as if I could. It does surprise me how complicated the process is. For me, it's something that's been self taught, really. After singing lots of Elton John and Paul Simon, etc, I felt like I'd like to give this songwriting thing a go back in my teens. Which is just what I did …and here I am years down the track, having composed about 800 songs. It's nice to be sharing and taking about the songs here. I hope you enjoy hearing about the song Mystery as much as I enjoyed recording the episode. Here we go….

Scott Walker not only told Joe Jackson during the triple-set of in-depth interviews they did in 1995 - one for radio, one for a rock music magazine and the other for The Irish Times newspaper - that he remembered and really liked a review Jackson did of Walker's album Climate of Hunter in 1984. He said it helped him redefine for himself how his music could best be described at that point. Then, in 2003, Jackson was informed that Scott Walker wanted to use as the booklet notes in the forthcoming box-set Scott Walker in 5 Easy Pieces, a critique of Walker's life and work Jackson had written in 1990. That critique formed the basis of Scott Walker The Fugitive Kind, Jackson's previous book on Walker which also contained its backstory and a personal appreciation of Walker's music from the author's perspective as a lifelong fan. This book, Scott Walker The Joe Jackson Interviews is a companion piece to the first and it also includes a backstory, focusing on aspects of the late Scott Walker's life that have never been discussed in public. One of these interviews when first published instantly became legendary among fans of The Walker Brothers and Scott Walker, particularly those who read Walkerpeople, the newsletter of The Walker Brothers Appreciation Society, in which Jackson gave permission for it to be included for fans. In its preface, Lynne Goodall wrote, ‘From all the press interviews given by Scott this time around THE definitive, in-depth interview surely has to be that which appeared in over two consecutive issues in a music paper. Well-deserved congratulations to interviewer Joe Jackson (and his ever-inquiring mind) for this “epic” volume.' Jan de Rooij, from Holland, wrote, 'the 2-part Joe Jackson interview with Scott is the best I ever read.' Patrick Rogers, from Surrey, wrote, 'The Joe Jackson interview was remarkable-the sort of open-minded, appreciative approach to Scott's music and thinking that has been lacking for so long.' Pauline Armstrong, from Chester, wrote, 'what a masterful interview. Throw away the thumbscrews and send for Joe Jackson! What a shame that Mr Jackson didn't write Scott's biography - that would have been a real eye-opener.' The latter comment, as Jackson says in this book, "had a sting in its tail." In 1990 he suggested to his literary agent that he would love to write a biography of Scott. She said, "I don't think there would be much interest right now in a biography of Scott Walker." However, thirty years later, Joe Jackson now suggests that "both these books, particularly Scott Walker The Joe Jackson Interviews, which I sub-title Looking Back 'Through Mirrors Dark and Blessed With Cracks' - a quote from his seminal song, Boychild - could legitimately be described as the autobiography that Scott Walker never wrote."

On March 1st 1985, when a meeting with Leonard Cohen made me feel transcendent and decide to track down more of my music heroes to interview, Scott Walker was first on the list. During that interview a decade later Scott told me he not only remembered and really liked a review of his album Climate of Hunter I wrote in 1984 but that it helped him "redefine" in his own mind how his music could best be described at that point. Then in 2003, he said he wanted to use in his box set 5 Easy Pieces, a critique of his life and work which I wrote in 1990. Now, thirty years later, that critique and its backstory - it was never used in the box-set - is published in full in a digital magazine I called Scott Walker: The Fugitive kind, available in Amazon etc. And to think it all began when I was a boy and heard songs like The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore. Here, apart from an evocation of the time, I discovered Scott's music you hear Walker and I discuss the sound of the early Walker Brothers records. A fan meets one of his heroes

Vinyl LP Records - - - The history - - A phonograph record (also known as a gramophone record, especially in British English), often simply called a record, was an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the center of the disc. Because the records were made of polyvinyl chloride they took on the name “VINYL”. In the mid-2000s, gradually, records made of any material began to be called vinyl records, or simply vinyl. The phonograph disc record was the primary medium used for music reproduction throughout the 20th century. - - - The details - - The LP record (from "long playing" or "long play") is a phonograph record format characterized by a speed of 33 1⁄3 rpm, having a 12- or 10-inch (30- or 25-cm) diameter, and uses the "microgroove" groove specification. Introduced by Columbia in 1948, it was soon adopted as a new standard by the entire record industry. The new product was a 12- or 10-inch (30 or 25 cm) fine-grooved disc made of PVC ("vinyl") and played with a smaller-tipped "microgroove" stylus at a speed of 33 1⁄3 rpm. Each side of a 12-inch LP could play for about 22 minutes. The average LP has about 1,500 feet (460 m; 0.28 mi) of groove on each side. The average tangential needle speed relative to the disc surface is approximately 1 mile per hour (1.6 km/h; 0.45 m/s). It travels fastest on the outside edge. - - - It is one, long, groove, filled with music. But, in reality, it is “Just A Groove”, an album oriented groove. Agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, neuroticism, openness: these five traits, and the variations within them, capture the range of human personality, and they do it quite well. They capture differences between men and women, between liberals and conservatives, between emotionally unstable artists and hard-working manager types, and everyone in between. Not only do...

Preocoop Maskcatcher, Holger Zilske & Dave DK Remix(Baalsaal)Dave DK BIOGRAPHY http://www.davedk.com  DJ & producer David Krasemann, better known as Dave DK has been making waves in the electronic music scene for a couple of years now, and now starting to emerge as a serious player. Since the early 90's he was fascinated by the upcoming techno movement, which eventually led to his own active initiation. 1995 was the starting point for the then 17 year old. Together with a longtime friend, Dave produced his first tracks and was involved in the organization of underground techno and house partys, constantly trying to spread and push new electronic music.  Searching for new electronic sounds every day and having honed his skills as a producer in his chosen home Berlin, Dave released his first record on Müller Records in 1998. His DJ activities had been highly pushed since that time. In 1999 he became a resident DJ at Tresor/Globus club in Berlin, later on also at the legendary Panorama Bar. Beside his remix productions for Beroshima and Skiebäck he released records on raum...musik., Decore, Lifetime Music and Cadeaux.  As Dave is an open minded person who resents musical limits, he doesn’t want to be reduced to one style.  His sound simply is the result of different styles that have influenced him throughout the years. "I have a passion for the wide range between house and techno as well as pop music and dancefloor stuff of the early 90's", says Dave.  Though he’s elegantly juggling a variety of electronic music to create his own style, in his tracks he often combines tragic melodies with kickin’ grooves that transform your body into a twisting stampede of electricity, with trademark swing and warm funk. The year 2000 can be marked as the first highlight in his career: his debut album  "sensory overload“ had been released on Müller Records and there were musical excursions on Cologne’s Television label as well as on the Barcelona based Regular label. Dave is now currently recording for Moodmusic and also on Playhouse (a collaboration with Holger „Smash TV“ Zilske) which brings him even closer to his idea of electronic house tunes. In November 2007 Dave released his second album „Lights and Colours“ on Moodmusic. For Dave DK, music is a model of living in which he’s able to enhance his skills in order to realise his vision of modern electronic club and home entertainment – expect more fantastic releases in the very near future.    Worldwide gigs:     all over Germany, Japan, Brazil,China, Switzerland, Spain, Holland, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Israel, Portugal, Greece, Ukraine, USA , UK, Russia, Finland, France, Croatia, Hungary, Italy Special thanks to Dave Dk!!!More info @ www.davedk.comhttp://www.myspace.com/djdavedk  My URL: myspace.com/mummiamiundergroundmovement
