On this episode of The Pitch, Andy and Drew dig into two ideas that both orbit the same macro challenge: how do sports venues generate more value on the days when the stands aren't full?Andy kicks things off with Surrey County Cricket Club's move to turn the Oval into a midweek co-working destination, installing Wi-Fi and laptop-friendly desks to pull remote workers into four-day county fixtures. Drew draws the comparison to the San Diego Padres' Remote Work Wednesday experiment and the pair debate the real ROI of infrastructure investment versus a lighter-touch marketing play. The conversation quickly expands beyond simple attendance tactics. Andy pitches the idea of segmenting co-working days by industry, turning the stadium into a genuine networking event, and ultimately folding the whole concept into corporate sponsorship packages that give brands a physical home inside the venue on non-match days. Then Drew takes the mic with a pitch around legends football, asking what would happen if the one-off celebrity and former player games that clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United already run were structured into a proper secondary league, complete with tracked stats, betting markets, and miniature club contracts. Andy traces the idea back to Sky Sports' Masters Football series from the early 2000s and the pair explore how the Kings League and Baller League have already proved the appetite exists, and why a Premier League-backed version could be close to unstoppable. Finally, the duo zoom out to look at why all of this matters now, connecting stadium monetisation directly to financial fair play regulations in European football, before grounding the conversation in practical examples from Southampton FC's in-stadium pub and arcade to the Bernabeu's surprisingly affordable Starbucks.Timestamps01:30 - The Surrey Oval Co-Working Idea04:00 - Baseball Comparison and the ROI Question07:00 - Networking, Industry Days, and Segmenting the Crowd10:00 - Sponsor Suites as Co-Working Infrastructure15:30 - The Legends League Pitch18:30 - Kings League, Club Partnerships, and Defensive Moats21:00 - Stadium Revenue and the Financial Fair Play Macro24:00 - Spurs, Southampton, the Bernabeu, and What's Actually ReplicableAbout The ShowThe Pitch is the conversational show from the Sports Pundit Podcast Network, hosted by Andy Marston and Drew Rauso. In 2006, on the 30th anniversary of Saints winning the FA Cup, the club's official historians, Hagiology Publishing, published Tie a Yellow Ribbon – How The Saints Won The Cup*. The book's author, Tim Manns, was, at that time, station director of The Saint, the city of Southampton's local, commercial radio station, which was a wholly owned subsidiary of Southampton FC.On the same day, 1st May 2006, The Saint broadcast a one-hour documentary, How The Saints Won The Cup, featuring the voices of most the '76 squad, along with some of the other key staff members, some of their opponents and the cup final referee. All of the audio came from Tim's recorded interviews when researching the book. This documentary has never been heard again until now, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Saints' finest hour.*Tie a Yellow Ribbon is available to purchase at the Saints Store and from Hagiology Publishing: http://www.hagiologists.com

Rob interviews football legend Matt Le Tissier for a conversation about modern Britain, media censorship, and his controversial perspectives on current events. Matt Le Tissier, former Sky Sports pundit and Southampton FC icon, opens up about his departure from mainstream media, his journey to Christianity, and shares his unfiltered views on everything from government control to the crisis in society the UK and the world is facing. Matt Tissier REVEALS: Why he was fired from Sky Sports His thoughts on Keir Starmer The true extent of media control How he has managed to generate and create an income after his ‘cancellation’ Why he found Christianity The problems with football right now Why Financial Fair Play rules actually prevent teams from challenging the status quo and protect established wealthy clubs. Why psychopaths tend to rise to positions of power BEST MOMENTS "I think football should be free from any of those kind of campaigns. Keep it out of sport. If you want to campaign for that stuff, do it on your own time, but don't infiltrate sports to be able to do it." "I've always felt like there is a backlash coming and there I always feel like there are so many more good people on this planet than there are bad and eventually that will win over." "When you're taxed when you buy, taxed when you sell, taxed when you're alive and taxed when you're dead - our government is basically discouraging people from actually growing our country." "I would say there are probably people who like to have control over human beings, psychopaths, I think if they destroy the country enough, there'll be people begging for help from their government." "The stuff about free speech is that you are free to offend people. Now, you can't give offence to people. You can't offend somebody. Somebody can only take offence." "One of the greatest things we can have while we're on this planet is the human connection and making connections with different people from different walks of life and enjoying other people's company." In this excellent conversation from 2021, we are joined by Rasmus Ankersen (@RasmusAnkersen), an internationally known author, speaker, and film producer and one of the worlds leading experts on talent identification and development. Today he is one of the founders of Sport Republic, which is the majority shareholder of Southampton FC, where he also works as the Director of Football. He was also the co-director of football for Brentford FC of the English Premier League from 2015-2021 and Chairman of Champions League club FC Midtjylland of the Danish Super League. His 2012 book The Goldmine Effect is an incredible read and was one of the books that inspired me at the beginning of my Changing the Game Project journey, so to say that I am thrilled to have Rasmus on is an understatement.  In 2021 he released a film called “The Hockey Miracle in the Middle of Nowhere,” the true story of how the small town of Herning, Denmark (pop. 50,000) sent five players to the NHL in a ten year period. No Danish player had ever made the NHL before! In that same period, the US cities of Chicago and Detroit, hockey hotbeds, each sent less than 5 players to the top of the ice hockey world. How did they do it? In our talk, Rasmus and I break down the major principles outlined in the film and speak about how you might apply these same ideas in your own community so you don't just ID the talent that shouts, but you can identify and patiently develop the talent that whispers! Please connect with Rasmus at www.RasmusAnkersen.com and grab yourself a copy of The Goldmine Effect.
