I know I have been absent for a while, but this was just too important of a conversation to have not to make time for it. I hope you learn something, and not just anxiety inducing stuff, but something to be hopeful for. You'll likely recall our recent brush with seismic activity - that should be our wake up call. That's the message candidate and guest Bill Burch is arguing, and you'll be glad someone with this much industry knowledge and experience is ready to push us onto a better path. Check out the convo and then check out more info on Bill below.Want to learn more about Bill?Website:https://burch4trrc.com/Want to reach me?Email: theelpasobeat@gmail.comFB/IG/Threads: @theelpasobeat
This conversation has been a long time coming for me, though y'all may not know that. My own personal journey through politics has not been entirely separate from my journey through personal spirituality. I've working towards helping get El Paso get more engaged, more involved, and ultimately to raise our collective consciousness and address our concerns together. If anyone was ever an arbiter of changing the consciousness on governance, it's today's guest, author, spiritual teacher, and Presidential candidate: Marianne Williamson. I found this conversation to be uplifting and inspiring, I hope you do too.Want to learn more about Marianne?Website:https://marianne2024.com/FB:https://www.facebook.com/williamsonmarianne/IG:https://www.instagram.com/mariannewilliamson/Twitter:https://twitter.com/marwilliamsonTT:https://www.tiktok.com/@marwilliamsonofficialWant to reach me?Email: theelpasobeat@gmail.comFB/IG/Threads: @theelpasobeat
Ron is one of those community members who definitely remind you that there are some amazing El Pasoans out there who are doing good work and defending the defenseless simply out of the goodness if their heart. This episode, our guest, Ron Comeau shares his story and struggle against a corrupted system that was resulting, and is still resulting, in countless dead strays on the streets of El Paso. Through constant and determined advocacy and sheer will, Ron and others have pushed El Paso leadership into bolder strategies in resolving our animal services issues, but now more of us need to get involved to get things across the finish line. Another US Senate candidate joins us on the EPB this week! This one wasn't anticipated but was not a ton of work to throw together so I figured, why not? The El Paso Young Democrats hosted a meeting with Rep Eddie Morales so members (and guests) would have the opportunity to learn about and ask questions about the upcoming constitutional amendments up for election. It's useful info, so I'm eager to share it with you allAfter the brief, I did ask Rep Morales to unpack what's happening at the special session, and importantly, how we can help -Spoiler alert - we need to send HAND WRITTEN letters to the Governor's and Lt. Governor's offices. Bury them in hard copy complaints. Make it rain like we're Hogwarts thirsting for Harry's enrollment...you get the idea. Hard copy letters can't as easily be ignored. Demand better for our school system.Want to reach me?Email: theelpasobeat@gmail.comFB/IG/Threads: @theelpasobeat

Probably what will be the political scandal of 2023 for El Paso, the gas card fiasco, is in large part thanks to a humble citizen trying to hold his elected representative accountable. That citizen also happens a friend of mine, and our guest on today's episode. George Zavala has been a fierce advocate for people with disabilities, but his latest journey, he hopes, will inspire and motivate all of us.Want to reach me?Email: theelpasobeat@gmail.comFB/IG/Threads: @theelpasobeat
My first interview back is one with a returning guest, El Paso County Democratic Chairman Michael Apodaca joins us to discuss a variety of topics from what went wrong with Prop K and how we pick up the pieces and move forward to how the next Texas Senate Democratic nominee can capitalize on Beto's work from 2018. I will warn you all, I don't have the magic audio editing service I had last iteration *yet* and this in-person interview had some external factors that had me tweaking with the audio a bit so...it's a bit hard to hear. Turn up your volume. Sorry in advance, but I should have the better luck moving forward!Want to reach me?Email: theelpasobeat@gmail.comFB/IG/Threads: @theelpasobeat
I try and I try to stay away, and...the local politics...it just keeps bringing me back.In traditional EPB fashion, I had larger aspirations for my return episode but procrastinated and am opting for simpler and quicker so, this is what you get. I have some thoughts on Rep Hernandez's gas card scandal, namely where we should go from here, and set some mild expectations for the show ahead. It's so good to be back!Have thoughts? Would you laugh if I said the episode has been sitting uploaded for the last month, and I just forgot the turn it on to "published"? Well, that's not what happened, but that'd at least be a funny story. Anyway, now that the runoffs are done we can talk about the upcoming administration and what we can expect to be their first big action to be. I've got some announcements about myself following my loss, and I have some thoughts on what's going on with the border situation. Believe it or not I cram this all into about a half hour but I managed to leave out one thingHave a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Get some cocoa, enjoy the finale, and I'll see ya in the next season.
I did it again. I'm overdue on City Council recaps and I don't have one for you today, but I at least have a reason. Plus my update on what I teased last episode about showing up at call to the public to call out a rumor I had heard. Not too lengthy one and while I say it a few times in the episode, I'll mention it here, thanks for sticking with the show, getting engaged with local politics, and special thanks to those who actually read these descriptions.
Does her shame know no bounds? Find out what I'm talking about after we rush through a short CC recap with updates on the BBB Regional Development grant we applied for, a less than thorough update from Animal Services, and we also have a surprise development in the UMC CO fight. All that and more on this City Council recap episode
Y'all know I love breaking down the illusion of separation between voters and their elected officials, so I'm particularly excited about having conversations like these. My (new) personal House Rep for the TX State House, Eddie Morales Jr. joins us to talk about his life story growing up, and how it shaped him into a Rep not afraid to get into the political muck of bipartisanship to find common ground and do his best to deliver to Texans, and now, El Pasoans. I've had the opportunity to sit with Rochelle Garza, candidate for TX Attorney General! It's a brief convo but we cover a bunch ranging from her experience as a new mother, why Ken Paxton is a bad fit for mothers and Texans in general, and the failed action attempted by Reps Annello and Rivera - struck down by Mayor Leeser and four council reps, and why it should have passed. Following this great convo we analyze the 18 candidates (including yours truly) who have thrown themselves into the race for 4 different City Council elections this November. Next year's budget has been adopted, we break down some of the many investments that are being made, as well as the logic (or in my opinion, lack of) of the representatives voting against said investments. We also had the council take stances on a number of legislative priorities and topics of legislation for them to support or oppose, and we have a new bond election coming this November, focusing on streets, parks, and climate planning. We cover all of it and more on this weeks City Council recap. You want to reach me? In the second of hopefully three conversations around the UMC CO's, I sat with a UMC rep, Jon Law, to get the breakdown of what is being proposed and importantly, how it will affect you, the taxpayer. Fantastic convo here with AG Commissioner candidate Susan Hays. We spent a fair amount of time on the importance of cannabis reform, from an agriculture and economic lens, but did you know that your kids' school lunches are controlled by the AG Commision?? I didn't. And Susan has some great ideas on how to improve the health and lives of our kids, which we also unpack here. In the first of hopefully three, but certainly at least two conversations, surrounding the upcoming vote on the UMC COs to be voted on by the County Commissioners in early September - I sat with Karla Sierra of LIBRE Initiative to give y'all the opportunity to hear about the work the org does and their current focus on getting the COs in front of voters to approve of, or not. She makes some decent points, and some that didn't quite sell me, you'll be able to hear it all here and if you want to check out LIBRE Initiative or speak with Karla directly you can do so hereWebsitehttps://thelibreinitiative.com/FB: https://www.facebook.com/LIBRETexas/IG: https://www.instagram.com/libretexas/Twitter: https://twitter.com/libretexasKarla Sierra : 915-218-4692
I've finally caught up, with just hours to spare, but hey, it counts. You've probably heard by now that the Council is lowering our property tax base the most it's been lowered in 35 years. They fail to mention you're still going to pay more in property taxes next fiscal year. We're going to go into all of that and what those extra dollars are getting you as well as taking some time facing the difficult path as a result of Animal Services and the way things have been managed up to now. We have some exciting news on the campaign for the District 5 council seat and some listener feedback! Very full episode, hope you enjoy it on this lovely Sunday.
Surprise! We have an awesome guest conversation and I just couldn't delay it (cuz y'all had to hear about the block-walk happening later today, 8/12/22, details for which you can find on John's website/SM (those links below))I know you're dying for the next CC recaps but John was in town and agreed to sit with me and I figured I'd give y'all a break from only hearing my grating voice, that I know you just can't get enough of. This was a great convo to hear how John's conversations are going with constituents, from the City of Uvalde to the border, to El Paso and surrounding areas. We even touch on some personal ties to the Burn Pit legislation that was slightly delayed, in part by his Republican opponent, and the Jan 6 hearings.Website: https://liraforcongress.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/LiraForCongressFB: https://www.facebook.com/liraforcongressIG: https://www.instagram.com/liraforcongress/You want to reach me? The lights at the end of the tunnel. The big focus I pulled away from the set of meetings a month ago was the robust (and at times frustrating) conversation around the charter amendments. After all was said and done, two weeks later the amendment election got kicked down the road to next May (for good reason, we'll get to that next episode). This episode focuses on that sometimes frustrating conversation to unpack some of the more impactful charter amendments that will be making their way in front of voters in the near future.
Full recording of the townhall I hosted with Rep Art Fierro on August 1st. Full disclosure, the microphone we were using was a bit spotty, and some people opted to remain in place and not come up to the mic. Definitely need to invest in a wireless mic for folks to use in the future. You're not getting anything but the townhall this episode (okay a quick 2 minute update on what to expect from the next couple of episodes from the top)My reflections and ideas on moving forward will come in the next episode, along with the council meeting recaps. If you're interested in watching vs listening you can view the townhall livestream on my campaign Instagram page @generaforepdistrict5
100 episodes in and you'd think I'd be better at getting these up and posted on a more regular schedule. Ah well. In today's episode I recap my experience at the Texas Democratic convention, drop the most call backs to previous episodes in an episode I believe, provide updates on the final 100 days of this election cycle, and give an update on the Climate charter amendment. It's a busy one but we've finally reached this milestone. Thank you so much for listening and following along on this adventure to get El Paso more politically engaged.
In a move that could prove truly detrimental to future campaigns, half of El Paso's city council and the mayor voted against an item that would have instructed EPPD not to prioritize calls about women seeking reproductive healthcare in El Paso.
I poured over hours of budget talks for you guys so you wouldn't have to - let's talk about the originally decreased tax rate and why it won't be as peachy as they want us to believe.
In true form I have not left enough time to fill out the description box adequately. Sorry about my absence, things have been hectic and I had to put the show down, but the world does not stop spinning and we have resolution on the noise ordinance changes that had been postponed four times in recently - take a wild guess how this story is going to end. That and more on this super late recap.
So, it's the damdest thing. I forgot to push "publish" on the episode earlier in the week...no, that's not true. Unfortunately my hands are full and this tryout run with an editing helper hit some snags that snowballed on my schedule. Sorry for the delay but now you have the perfect Sunday evening listening as you grill up those Juneteenth/Father's day dinners this lovely El Paso evening.
I really need to stop putting these off til the last minute before workMistakes get cleaned up Contract extenstionHelp wanted and what you're signing up for Will fill in the rest later...

One of these days, I won't procrastinate this part, and will have a proper description up as soon as the episode is, but it is not this day.We focus on the last council meetings which included ARPA fund appropriations and the creation of a Women's Rights commission - I give my recap and takes on all of it and more on this episode.

It's 4/20 and you know I had to do something for it right? Seeing as cannabis reform is on the ballot in Texas this November 'n all. What I don't talk enough about is how important safe and simple access to medicine it is for so many folks.
