Diving back into the archive for a replay of Part Two of our special two-part episode with Dr. Christine Cocchiola, a leading expert in Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) that delves into some of the most insidious forms of abuse: coercive control and post-separation abuse. In part two of this special two-part episode on Domestic Abuse, we delve deeper into a form of intimate partner violence (IPV) that's gaining attention in the media through high-profile cases like those of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, and Johnny Depp and Amber Heard: Post-Separation Abuse. Dr. Christine Cocchiola, a survivor and advocate, returns to further our understanding of this often covert and insidious form of abuse. While physical abuse is more overt and recognizable, Post-Separation Abuse encompasses tactics of coercive control and emotional manipulation that can continue to affect victims long after a relationship has ended. In part one, Dr. Cocchiola explored coercive control extensively. Now, she educates us on the varied manifestations of Post-Separation Abuse and highlights its dangers, emphasizing the need for awareness and support for those trapped in this destructive cycle. *** One note, as this is an archive episode, some of the links in the episode may have changed or no longer be in use. Diving back into the archive for a replay of our special two-part episode with Dr. Christine Cocchiola, a leading expert in Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) that delves into some of the most insidious forms of abuse: coercive control and post-separation abuse. Abuse between intimate partners comes in many forms. All are destructive, but some are so insidious and pervasive that they are incredibly common, yet vastly unknown by the public and often, in fact, by the victims themselves. With physical violence and abuse, it is very easy to identify that behavior is abusive, but when it comes to coercive control and emotional abuse, it is much harder to identify. Dr. Christine Cocchiola, a survivor herself, is dedicated to educating, supporting and advocating for others suffering in this horrible cycle of abuse. In this episode, you will learn the signs to look for when coercive control is an issue, strategies to extricate yourself and what we as a society need to do to protect victims and stop abusers. Return on Thursday for Part Two where Dr. Cocchiola discusses the increasing awareness of another form of IPV, Post-Separation Abuse, which is increasingly in the headlines with the ongoing high profile cases of Kim Kardashion and Kanye West and the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial. *** One note, as this is an archive episode, some of the links in the episode may have changed or no longer be in use. Hey there, welcome back to Diverse Thinking Different Learning! Today, we're diving into a topic that's often overlooked but incredibly important: late diagnoses of ADHD and autism, particularly in women, people of color, and LGBTQ individuals. It's a conversation that's long overdue, and we're so grateful to have Dr. Monica Blied joining us to shed some light on this crucial issue. As a clinical psychologist and founder of Faces of Health, Dr. Blied brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table. In her private practice, she specializes in providing psychological assessments for adults and children who suspect they may have Autism, ADHD, or learning differences. With a keen focus on supporting adults living with chronic medical and mental illnesses, Dr. Blied has dedicated her career to helping individuals navigate the complex intersection of mental and physical health. Today, dive deep into the reasons why certain conditions like ADHD and autism are often diagnosed late, despite their significant impact on individuals' lives. From systemic biases to misconceptions and missed opportunities for support, Dr. Blied will be sharing invaluable insights and advice for anyone who suspects they may be struggling with an undiagnosed condition and what parents can look for in their children that could be signs of struggle. Show Notes: [2:13] - People are often overlooked and it seems that there are systemic biases. There are studies that show that particularly people of color are misdiagnosed. [3:42] - There are many misconceptions. Something important to remember is that most of the time, certain behaviors are not willful. [6:03] - One reason someone's diagnosis is missed is fewer outward symptoms or struggles, especially when compared to a sibling. [9:34] - Dr. Blied shares an experience in seeing the similarities and differences in siblings and the tendency to put more focus on one child over another. [11:24] - A late diagnosis could also be due to a family normalizing and nurturing certain behaviors. [13:38] - Externalized behaviors are obvious. The kids who internalize are often missed. [15:46] - Individuals who are born female are often misdiagnosed or completely overlooked as children. [17:44] - The average age of ADHD diagnosis in women is 37. By 18 years old, 80% of women who are autistic are still undiagnosed. [20:45] - Special interests can be misleading. [23:51] - Girls and women tend to be very good at masking, until the demands are more difficult to adjust to. [25:07] - In children, ADHD and autism are diagnosed in 4 boys to every 1 girl. But in adulthood, it is a 1 to 1 ratio. It is a misconception that it is more common in boys. [28:21] - There is the belief, even among medical professionals, that ADHD isn't a real struggle or problem. [29:12] - Dr. Blied describes what ADHD and autism might look like in a girl especially during childhood. [31:11] - There are higher rates of autism and ADHD in those with other types of medical issues and in LGBTQIA+ individuals. [33:36] - A late diagnosis leads to years of missed opportunities for support and intervention. [34:27] - Dr. Blied shares some first steps and advice if you suspect that you could need a diagnosis or are late diagnosed. Consumers and policy makers have unprecedented choices to make in the years to come about how and what we eat. If we continue down our current path of food production, we risk ever-increasing levels of animal exploitation, environmental destruction, biodiversity loss, and challenges to human health. In vitro meat production, or the process of growing meat in a lab, has the potential to reduce the severity of these problems. This proposal would change our food systems dramatically. Edibility and In Vitro Meat: Ethical Considerations (Lexington Books, 2022) explores the ethical questions that it's important to ask every stage of this process. Rachel Robison-Greene considers arguments for and against the production of in vitro meat, as well as challenges for implementation. She argues that in vitro meat should be implemented and that we should re-think how we use the term “edible.” Rachel Robison-Greene is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Utah State University. Her research interests are largely in meta-ethics, epistemology, and applied ethics, especially as it pertains to animals, the environment, and technology. Rachel serves as the Secretary of the Public Philosophy Network, the Secretary of the Culture and Animals Foundation, and is the Chair Elect of the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl. Kyle Johannsen is a philosophy instructor at Trent University and Wilfrid Laurier University. His most recent book is Wild Animal Ethics: The Moral and Political Problem of Wild Animal Suffering (Routledge, 2021). Learn more about your ad choices. On 9 May 2018, an ideologically diverse opposition alliance called Pakatan Harapan (PH) defeated the long-ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition which had dominated politics in Malaysia since the 1980s. This was the first regime change in Malaysia's history. This outstanding development was shortly followed by a series of defections culminating in the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government in February 2020, after just 22 months in power. A new government was sworn in in March 2020, led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, but only lasted until August 2021, when another new government led by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yakoob was formed. As Malaysia gears up for its 15th general elections to be held in the second half of 2022, Professor Elvin Ong joins Dr Natali Pearson on SSEAC Stories to discuss the tumultuous state of Malaysian politics. Drawing on his book Opposing Power: Building Opposition Alliances in Electoral Autocracies (University of Michigan Press, 2022), Professor Ong reflects on the numerous challenges—structural, perceptual, and strategic—that can often undermine the opposition, and offers insights into what may happen at the upcoming ballot in Malaysia. About Elvin Ong: Elvin Ong is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the National University of Singapore. He is also Chair Elect of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei (MSB) Studies Group. Previously, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Southeast Asia Research (CSEAR) in the Institute of Asian Research (IAR) at the University of British Columbia. His research has been published in various political science disciplinary journals such as Party Politics and the American Journal of Political Science, as well as various regional journals such as Contemporary Southeast Asia and the Journal of East Asian Studies. His book Opposing Power is published by the University of Michigan Press, under the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies book series. His PhD is from Emory University, and his MPhil is from the University of Oxford. As Anne Robinson announces she's stepping down as the host of the Channel 4 quiz show Countdown, Emma Barnett catches up with her. Robinson was the first female to ever host the show, with 265 episodes under her belt since she joined just a year ago. After a career as a national newspaper journalist, she found fame in 2000 hosting the BBC quiz show The Weakest Link. Her acerbic wit led to her becoming labelled the “Queen of Mean”. For months now the apparent increasing shortage of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has caused uproar, igniting debates in Parliament and triggering the appointment of an HRT tsar. A Channel 4 documentary earlier this week on the subject also talked about the use of testosterone to help with some menopausal symptoms. Dr Paula Briggs, Chair Elect of British Menopause Society and Consultant in Sexual and Reproductive Health at Liverpool Women's Hospital discusses her concerns and unpicks the potential impact of using testosterone. The homelessness charity Shelter has found that nearly 230,000 private renters in England have been served with a formal no-fault eviction notice, known as a 'Section 21 eviction' in the last three years, since the Government first committed to scrap this form of eviction in April 2019. The charity has also found that while women and men are equally served these kinds of evictions by their landlords, they impact women more. Shelter is calling for the government to ban these kinds of evictions. Its Chief Executive Polly Neate joins Emma as does Lily, who was served a no-fault eviction notice in January 2022. Do you grow flowers in your garden? Have you ever thought about specifically growing flowers like you'd grow vegetables - in rows so you could pick them in order to have flowers for your home? It's a trend which has grown over the past 10 years amongst gardeners. Growing your own flowers means you can enjoy seasonal bouquets at a fraction of the cost of shop-bought blooms. Emma finds out more from Milli Proust, writer and floral designer in West Sussex , whose book Seed to Bloom is out in June, and Georgie Newbery - a flower farmer and founder of Common Farm Flowers in Somerset. Increasing numbers of women are reporting problems after having thread lift treatments, often known as “lunchtime facelifts”. Save Face, a national register of accredited practitioners of non-surgical cosmetic treatments, which campaigns to improve safety standards, says the number of complaints about the treatments by unregulated practitioners have more than doubled in the past year. Emma talks to its Director Ashton Collins. Presenter - Emma Barnett Producer - Alison Carter
