MCALLEN, Texas - During his 2025 State of the City Address, McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos said he is often asked why he spends so much time in Mexico. “Simple,” Villalobos said, answering the question. “Mexico believes in McAllen. Mexico embraces McAllen. Mexico invests in McAllen. Quiero que sepan mis amigos Mexicanos. Que McAllen entra alla a Mexico. And we depend on each other for trade and commerce, and tourism. And many times, we are just family. A todos mis amigos Mexicanos. To all my Mexican friends, please stand and be recognized.” In his remarks, Villalobos spoke about the networking opportunities presented at McAllen's annual MxLAN Summit. He said the 2024 event welcomed over 40 businesses and 90 participants from Mexican states such as Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Durango, Jalisco, Tamaulipas and more. “The summit helped build more than 37 emerging business partnerships and new opportunities for McAllen,” he said. Villalobos also pointed to McAllen's decision to set up a Department of International Relations. “It has had an immediate impact,” the mayor said, running through some of the cities and countries that have sent representatives to McAllen thanks to the outreach of the new department. He said diplomats from Ireland and France have visited the city, along with the governor of San Luis Potosí, and sister city delegations from Apodaca, Puerto Vallarta, Reynosa and Monterey. He said they also welcomed delegations from the departments of state in Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Durango, Oaxaca, Puebla, Quintana Rio, Tabasco, Veracruz, and Zacatecas. “In Mexico City we hosted McAllen Day, and in Monterrey we secured agreements with World Trade Center Monterrey, with the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo León, and with COMCE Noreste, the Mexican council for foreign aid,” Villalobos said. “And we just signed a trade agreement with a state of San Luis Potosi and a reaffirmation of sister city agreements with San Luis capital. And McAllen's first friendship partnership agreement with Tampico. “McAllen's agreements will push economic growth, help develop new businesses, build cultural connections, and bring our nation and people closer.” Editor's Note: The attached audio also includes Mayor Villalobos' remarks on the Anzalduas International Bridge. Jennifer Pentilla, an 18-year-old humanitarian from Missoula, Montana, disappeared on October 17, 1991, while biking through New Mexico during a solo trip to meet a missionary group in Mexico. Her last known interaction was at a Shell station in Deming, where she spoke with attendant Jesus "Chuy" Vasquez before heading east. Witnesses later reported seeing her in the area, but she failed to contact her mother as planned. A year later, her belongings were found 46 miles away, near Hatch, including journals, camping gear, and other items, but not her bicycle. Suspicions fell on Vasquez, whose accounts were inconsistent and who had a history of violence. Another person of interest, Henry Apodaca, reportedly bragged about abducting her. Despite law enforcement's focus on Vasquez and Apodaca, and the involvement of known serial killer David Parker Ray being ruled out, Jennifer's case remains unsolved over 30 years later.Ossuary 6 - Air Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Contact us at: weeknightmysteries@gmail.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/weeknightmysteriesTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@weeknightmysteries

Rebecca Grossman, a 60-year-old Los Angeles socialite, and former magazine publisher, walked arm-in-arm with her plastic surgeon husband, Peter Grossman, to the Van Nuys West Courthouse for the commencement of her murder trial. Grossman is accused of killing two young brothers in a drunken hit-and-run, allegedly racing her reported lover, former MLB player Scott Erickson, at the time of the fatal crash. Rebecca Grossman faces up to 34 years behind bars on two counts of second-degree murder for the 2020 deaths of Jacob Iskander, 8, and Mark Iskander, 11. The shocking incident occurred on September 29, 2020, when Rebecca, allegedly speeding at 71 mph, plowed into the two boys walking inside a crosswalk in Westlake Village. The collision launched Mark more than 250 feet, leading to his immediate death. Jacob passed away several hours later at the hospital. Witnesses reported that Grossman was racing with Scott Erickson, who was in another car at the time of the crash. The pair, reportedly in a relationship, had allegedly been drinking at a nearby restaurant prior to the collision. Prosecutors plan to present evidence that Rebecca had Valium in her system during the crash, further hindering her ability to drive. Despite maintaining innocence and blowing a 0.076%, Grossman faces charges of two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and one count of hit-and-run driving resulting in death. The court is allowed to provide jurors with evidence of Grossman's alleged love affair with Erickson at the time of the crash, as ruled by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Joseph Brandolino. Rebecca Grossman maintains her innocence, denying any involvement in the collision with the boys. However, Nancy Iskander, the grieving mother, contends that both Grossman and Erickson were driving at excessive speeds before the tragic incident occurred. Nancy, who narrowly avoided the collision with her younger son Zachary, expressed frustration that neither party stopped after the incident, making it difficult for her to determine which vehicle struck her sons. According to Nancy's account, she and Jacob were on inline skates, crossing the road at the crosswalk, while Mark was on his skateboard. Zachary, then five years old, was on his scooter, accompanied by her husband and daughter jogging nearby. Mark was declared dead at the scene, and Jacob succumbed to his injuries hours later at the hospital. The upcoming trial is expected to feature testimony from a California Highway Patrol officer who had previously pulled over Rebecca for speeding at 92 mph, warning her about the potential dangers. The court may also hear from Robert Apodaca, a former LA County Sheriff's Deputy specializing in traffic crashes. During the preliminary hearing, Apodaca estimated Rebecca's speed at 71.7 mph at the time of the collision, with the car's computer indicating 73 mph. He revealed that 11-year-old Mark was thrown 254 feet, the farthest he had witnessed a person being tossed in a crash. Another deputy, Rafael Mejia, testified that he found Rebecca a third of a mile away from the crash site, where she had pulled over and expressed confusion about why her airbag had deployed. Scott Erickson faced a misdemeanor charge, and his case was resolved in February 2022, with his attorney asserting his non-involvement in a hit-and-run. Rebecca Grossman has pleaded not guilty and is currently out on $2 million bond. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

My first interview back is one with a returning guest, El Paso County Democratic Chairman Michael Apodaca joins us to discuss a variety of topics from what went wrong with Prop K and how we pick up the pieces and move forward to how the next Texas Senate Democratic nominee can capitalize on Beto's work from 2018. I will warn you all, I don't have the magic audio editing service I had last iteration *yet* and this in-person interview had some external factors that had me tweaking with the audio a bit so...it's a bit hard to hear. Turn up your volume. Sorry in advance, but I should have the better luck moving forward!Want to reach me?Email: theelpasobeat@gmail.comFB/IG/Threads: @theelpasobeat
On this episode of The Collective, we speak with Danny Apodaca. Danny currently works with Women's Basketball at Oklahoma State University as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach. Danny dives deep into his travels across the United States and how he is able to blend his teachings from multiple mentors into his own unique style.
Local artist Evan Apodaca is accusing the San Diego International Airport of censorship. The airport often features San Diego art, but it has removed Apodaca's “Monumental Interventions” from its walls. The piece criticizes the military presence in the region. Speaking of art, protesters created street artwork in front of Sempra headquarters to protest fossil fuels. And some Comic-Con attendees weren't disappointed with the lack of Hollywood at the convention. Many production companies scaled back their presence due to the writers' and actors' strikes.
Join me on an invigorating journey with Luis Apodaca, a former professional baseball player who has mastered the art of maintaining his health post-retirement. Luis, with his disciplined lifestyle, has successfully dropped 30 pounds in just three months. His stories about his coaching experiences with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the fascinating world of contracts in Venezuela are eye-opening. Additionally, we pay homage to Josh Redick's passion for baseball that sees him globetrotting, playing the sport he loves. The world of baseball is continuously evolving, and we're talking about that with Luis, who brings his 11 years of experience in the minor leagues to the table. He tells us about the adaptability required when an injury threw him a curveball in his career. Also, we revisit the tale of Yassiel Puig, the man who brought the Latin dance music vibe into the Dodgers' locker room. As we switch gears, we dissect some tough questions about the medical industry and patient care. Luis shares a compelling story of a patient's adverse reaction to a prescribed drug, exposing the rift between physicians' practices and patients' best interests. As we wrap up our engaging chat, we're thrilled to announce our new podcast project, 'Latino Junkies.' It's a vibrant, Spanglish show where we discuss contemporary dilemmas like bullying, social media, and the challenges of parenting in the digital age. From there, we dive into a spirited discussion about the dynamics of team play, the importance of enjoying one's work, and balancing it with periods of relaxation. We then touch on the contentious topic of vaping and edibles with our guest, Byron Rogers, who brings his unique experiences to the table. So, get ready to step up to the plate and hit a home run in this enlightening episode.
