In this episode, I took the opportunity to reflect on a video of Jordan Peterson discussing the existence of God. Peterson emphasizes the importance of using cautious language when discussing God, as this transcendent principle is difficult to describe. He believes that God, at the highest level, is the spirit that individuals must emulate in order to thrive, and that this spirit can be extracted from the admirable qualities of people. Peterson also critiques the new atheist claim that belief in a deity is a superstitious and foolish hindrance to scientific progress, and questions whether even scientists themselves believe in the transcendent. Play Episode Listen Later Mar 8, 2023 21:16

In this episode, we discuss Narcissistic DEI and its Antidote, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in general, and the various approaches DEI theorists take. In this video, I discuss how some DEI theorists take specific instances of discrimination, such as banks not issuing mortgages to African Americans and people of color, and overgeneralize these issues to an entire population. This type of approach can be harmful because it assumes that all members of a particular group are the same and experience the same level of discrimination. In reality, people are complex and have unique experiences that cannot be reduced to their race or ethnicity. On the contrarian side of the DEI domain, is narcissistic DEI. Narcissistic DEI occurs when individuals or organizations focus solely on themselves and their own interests, rather than the broader goal of achieving equity and inclusion for all. A lack of empathy and a narrow focus on specific groups or individuals often characterizes this type of approach. In the video, I discuss the antidote to narcissistic DEI by emphasizing the importance of empathy and understanding. We must take the time to listen to and learn from individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences. By doing so, we can develop a deeper understanding of the issues and challenges facing marginalized communities and work towards creating a more equitable and inclusive society. Those wounds, caused by poverty, domestic abuse and gang violence, often manifest in unbearable feelings of worthlessness and shame when when caught in a cyclical relationship with “the culture.” In this special segment of what I like to call "The Heart Speaks Music" I explore how Kendrick illustrates his growth as an artist and as a Black man, while lamenting about the racial bias and complex social issues in a video featuring only a single shot held on Lamar. Welcome back to another episode of The Heart Speaks Podcast. In this episode, I speak with Rafe Kelly, founder of Evolve, Move, Play, an organization that's dedicated to getting people off the couch and moving their bodies out in nature and the outdoors. Now, why is this important? Because as human beings, our bodies were designed to move, and in fact, we cannot actually have a sense of meaning without movement. In this episode, we discuss why that is, and we dive into other juicy topics, like why some movement practices are worth pursuing more than others, why roughhousing is essential to developing empathy, and how you cannot be truly non-violent unless you are capable of being violent and consciously choose not to use violence. Enjoy the episode!

Dark Night of the Soul with Curt Jaimungal (E3)

Welcome to another episode of The Heart Speaks. The term dark night of the soul comes from a 16th-century poem written by a Spanish mystic. It is a term that describes the spiritual crisis that emerges in a person on his way to a mystical union with the Divine. It is a difficult time marked by temporary feelings of desolation, melancholy, and hopelessness, and act as guideposts on a trip back to one's authentic self. I have experienced this in my own life many times. And my sense is that my next guest is experiencing it as well.   Curt Jaimungal is the host of the podcast Theories of Everything. In this episode, our conversation meandered into so many different twists and turns. I sometimes didn't know where we were but I thought it was important to stay in that lost liminal space so that I can learn something from it. One of the themes Curt and I touched upon is a central question we face in modernity. Are we over-intellectualized? Have we become hyper cerebral Cartesian robots? Have we become afraid to drop into the body, into feelings, emotions, those parts of ourselves that make us human that we have devalued for so long?  I personally think we have become afraid to do that. But the goal in this episode was not to convince Curt but to stay with the questions themselves, in the hopes that being with them would allow something new and worthwhile to emerge. I wasn't always comfortable in this episode, but I think that's okay. I hope this episode pushes you to stay in discomfort when it arises in your own life, rather than immediately trying to flee from it. I believe discomfort can teach you something about human suffering, but also about beauty and joy. It has already taught me so much. Enjoy the episode!

In this episode, we talk about the art of relationship as a practice, as a skill set, as something that has to be developed so that we can enrich our lives and actually be stronger with ourselves and with one another. Hi Everyone! Welcome to a Special Episode of The Heart Speaks. Joining me today for a special roundtable conversation we have fellow distinguished intellectuals; Coleman Hughes, Kmele Foster, and Brittany King. I wanted to speak to these awesome individuals to get their take on the topic of race, post-2020. But this was not the typical conversation about Black Lives Matter, Critical Race Theory, or even woke ways of being. This was a conversation rooted in human psychology. We explore what it means to be in relationship with another human being, what it means to get to know another human being on an intimate level, their idiosyncrasies, their complexity, their uniqueness, and really the importance of practicing the art of relationship. We also explore the question of whether we've become less and less capable of doing that with each other. And if so, how does that impact our conversations on race? How does that make us more likely to caricature each other and stereotype each other? So let's dive right in!
