Born in Mexico and raised in Puerto Rico, Amelia Díaz Ettinger has written poems that reflect the struggle with identity often found in immigrants. She began writing poetry at age three, dictating poems out loud to the adults in her life, who wrote them down for her. Ettinger has continued to write poems and short stories throughout her life, while working as a high school science teacher.

In this episode of The Heart Speaks, Chloe discusses the relationship between bigotry, trauma, extremism surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Chloe suggests that trauma can lead to defensive measures to protect oneself and one's community from annihilation, which may result in extremism and argues that trauma is not an intellectual exercise but a subconscious feeling that manifests regardless of academic awareness. Those wounds, caused by poverty, domestic abuse and gang violence, often manifest in unbearable feelings of worthlessness and shame when when caught in a cyclical relationship with “the culture.” In this special segment of what I like to call "The Heart Speaks Music" I explore how Kendrick illustrates his growth as an artist and as a Black man, while lamenting about the racial bias and complex social issues in a video featuring only a single shot held on Lamar.
