In this episode: spiritual bypassing, curiosity, fear, wellbeing, inflection points, and what the body stores. This we are re-joined by Cory Muscara to discuss the benefits of practicing mindfulness while embarking on the FI journey, the concept of spiritual bypassing, and the positive benefits that come from being present. An important part of the FI journey is learning to take actionable steps to better your life, and a large part of this requires introspection and honest reflection of where you are in your life. Through the practice of meditation and setting intentions, it may allow you to recognize patterns that harm you or keep you from enjoying life in the present. While working through triggers or anxieties can be uncomfortable, mindful practices can be the vehicle to move you from discomfort to a place of control and confidence in your life. So while you may be putting all your mental energy into reaching your FI goal, remember that getting to the finish line is not what this journey is about, but rather the positive effects and changes that come from taking control of your life and being present! KEY TAKEAWAYS Sometimes the moments in life that cause us pain, can drive us on to look for side routes for relief. These side routes can take us to marvellous, unexpected destinations. We naturally feel a sense of alignment, whether consciously or not, when we are in connection with truth. It is a resonance that we feel within ourselves. When we live a life of misalignment, the result is burnout. The struggle against what does not come naturally causes a friction that turns into exhaustion. Recognising the struggle is the first step to acceptance. Presence is an intimate encounter of what is here with us right now. QUOTES 'I didn't get into meditation for any noble reasons' 'You know you're out of alignment when you constantly have to refresh the story' 'The momentum of it all has taken on a life of its own' 'Surrendering and reducing resistance is a very powerful step to take' VALUABLE RESOURCES Cory Muscara - https://corymuscara.com Mindset Change Podcast Mindset Coaching and Therapy The Mindset Coach UK Instagram Mindset Change YouTube ABOUT THE HOST Paul Sheppard Paul is well known for his holistic therapy and coaching approach when working with anxiety, stress, confidence, and motivation, understanding, and treating the root causes and surrounding issues He has a passion for understanding how the mind works and has been trained in many therapies. Brené Brown (Atlas of the Heart), Parker Palmer (Courage to Teach), and Cory Muscara (Stop Missing Your Life) help us look at the emotions that often accompany receiving feedback – particularly if we hear something negative. In a recent post, Cory Muscara offered this: “Next time you're given negative feedback, say to yourself: Oof, it hurts to hear this. But I know if I can hold the discomfort, I can uncover the lesson. So, in what ways can this feedback spark creative inspiration for my next steps rather than trigger a spiral of self-doubt?” In the episode Yo shares her experience of being recently reviewed for her position, Adjunct Lecturer at SJSU. We hope you've taken a similar journey and can relate to the emotions that came up for you. While her example is about teaching, Dwayne Dyer reminds us that “just as we're all students throughout life, we're all teachers.” Books referenced in the episode: Atlas of the Heart Stop Missing Your Life Courage to Teach Previous episodes that relate well to this topic: Ep. 6 Can We Just Ditch Performance Appraisals? Follow Cory on Instagram: @CoryMuscara Blaise Pascal is famous for saying “all of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” What is it that's so uncomfortable about sitting quietly in a room alone? Our rampage of thoughts, of course. What do we do when we want to punish our worst societal offenders? We lock ‘em up and put ‘em in solitary…where they have no escape from themselves or tbeir thoughts. Harvard professor Dan Gilbert, ran an interesting experiment with some of his college students that reinforced this sentiment. He took a group of students and put them in a room for multiple hours, with absolutely nothing to do and no forms of stimulation (no phones, nothing to read or write with etc). The situation became so uncomfortable for many of the students that some of them even elected to receive minor but uncomfortable shock treatments …because that shock somehow represented an upgrade from the discomfort they were experiencing internally. All of this evidence points to a need to work much more effectively with our thoughts. And who better to come teach us about thoughts, then one of my closest friends, Cory Muscara. The girlboss book club was something I had started a couple years ago, because It felt like the perfect excuse of how to merge my loves of working with reading at the same time. It was super fun, but it started to become too much of a job. And when it starts to become a job, its just not fun anymore. That being said, I've really missed having reasons and excuses to read really great books. So today, I am resurrecting the girlboss book club and I wanted to announce what our next 10 books are going to be. I've got 10 books for 10 months, but I might throw some other really fun ones in. These books are focused on personal development, finance, mindset, how to be a boss, and more. The book club is very informal. I truly just wanted to create a space where I can say, "here are some really great books that I'm going to be reading and I'll be talking about and sharing." We're going to have discussions about them and some really great conversation starters around the books happening in the girlboss club. What I'm also hoping to do is collect reviews, thoughts and feedback on books - not just the 10 I'm listing today. Think Goodreads, but for business books. I see this going in so many really cool directions, so I had to bring the book club back. Be sure you join my free Facebook community so you can join the conversation! So in no particular order, here we go. 1. Necessary Dream by Anna Fels Description: Despite the huge advances women have made in recent decades, their ambitions are still undermined in subtle ways. Parents, teachers, bosses, and institutions all give less encouragement to women than men, and women still grow up believing that they must defer to men in order be seen as feminine. If their ambition does survive into adulthood, too often those ambitions must be downsized or abandoned to accommodate “wifely” duties of household chores and child care. As a result, women--unlike men–continually have to re-shape their goals and expectations. Yet expressing ambition, pursuing it, and getting recognition for one’s accomplishments is critical to identity and happiness. In this groundbreaking work, Anna Fels draws on extensive research and years of her psychiatric practice to offer an original and deeply useful examination of ambition in women’s lives. In the process, she illuminates just what is necessary for women to articulate--and fulfill--their dreams. Why I’m selecting it: As an entrepreneur and mom, I’ve always found it difficult to balance dreams with obligations and how big is too big or too small? Curious about this idea of ambition and how to articulate it well. 2. Shark Tales:How I Turned $1,000 into a Billion Dollar Business by Barbara Corcoran Description: The inspiring true story of Shark Tank star Barbara Corcoran--and her best advice for anyone starting a business. After failing at twenty-two jobs, Barbara Corcoran borrowed $1,000 from a boyfriend, quit her job as a diner waitress, and started a tiny real estate office in New York City. Using the unconventional lessons she learned from her homemaker mom, she gradually built it into a $6 billion dollar business. Now Barbara's even more famous for the no-nonsense wisdom she offers to entrepreneurs on Shark Tank, ABC's hit reality TV show. Shark Talesis down-to-earth, frank, and as heartwarming as it is smart. After reading it, don't be surprised if you find yourself thinking, "If she can do it, so can I." Nothing would make Barbara happier. Why I am selecting it: I’ve watched Shark Tales and have always found Barbara Corcoran to be kind, yet firm. No-nonsense but inspiring. So I loved the chance to hear her story and what it takes to be a real GirlBoss (my definition). 3. Limitless by Jim Qwik Description: Belief that you are limited might be holding you back from your biggest dreams. In Limitless, I share tools that will help you cast off your perceived limitations. You’re going to learn how to upgrade your brain and memory. What’s more, you’ll learn how to increase your focus, optimize your work time, and form healthy habits. Limitless helps you learn anything faster, and once you’ve done that, there is nothing holding you back from your dreams. In these pages, you’ll discover: The secrets to memory and recall A simple method for learning anything FAST The 4 supervillains of learning My #1 tactic to remember names And much more... Why I am selecting it: Asked to read this in July and found the ideas fascinating between memory (which I admit sucks) and brain power — not a woo woo book, one about your brain and capacity to learn and do. 4. Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki Description: Rich Dad Poor Dad is Robert's story of growing up with two dads — his real father and the father of his best friend, his rich dad — and the ways in which both men shaped his thoughts about money and investing. The book explodes the myth that you need to earn a high income to be rich and explains the difference between working for money and having your money work for you. Why I am selecting it: One part of my brand and how I coach women is all about making money — and how to use marketing to do it. So I want to get my hands on anything I can about money, finances, investing, common sense principles that unfortunately are not passed down generation to generation or taught. 5. The Now Habit by Neil Fiore Description: THE NOW HABIT offers a comprehensive plan to help readers lower their stress and increase their time to enjoy guilt-free play. Dr. Fiore’s techniques will help any busy person start tasks sooner and accomplish them more quickly, without the anxiety brought on by the negative habits of procrastination and perfectionism. Why I am selecting it: I often pride my self on how much I get done on a tight deadline — but procrastination causes a lot of anxiety, that I’ve never actually considered. So I wanted to see if it’s possible to stop using it as an excuse and to get into action faster, without guilt. 6. Contagious by Jonah Berger Description: What makes things popular? If you said advertising, think again. People don’t listen to advertisements, they listen to their peers. But why do people talk about certain products and ideas more than others? Why are some stories and rumors more infectious? And what makes online content go viral? Wharton marketing professor Jonah Berger has spent the last decade answering these questions. He’s studied why New York Times articles make the paper’s own Most E-mailed list, why products get word of mouth, and how social influence shapes everything from the cars we buy to the clothes we wear to the names we give our children. In Contagious, Berger reveals the secret science behind word-of-mouth and social transmission. Discover how six basic principles drive all sorts of things to become contagious, from consumer products and policy initiatives to workplace rumors and YouTube videos. Learn how a luxury steakhouse found popularity through the lowly cheesesteak, why anti-drug commercials might have actually increased drug use, and why more than 200 million consumers shared a video about one of the most boring products there is a blender. Contagious provides specific, actionable techniques for helping information spread—for designing messages, advertisements, and content that people will share. Whether you’re a manager at a big company, a small business owner trying to boost awareness, a politician running for office, or a health official trying to get the word out, Contagious will show you how to make your product or idea catch on. Why I am selecting it: As a marketer, we’re always breaking down and dissecting what makes things go viral? How does someone get picked up by a huge influencer? What makes the difference? Since we’re all entrepreneurs building empires of one sort or another, I thought this book would be insightful and perhaps encourage creativity in how we approach marketing ourselves and our businesses. 7. Get Out Of Your Head by Jennie Allen Description: Are your thoughts holding you captive? I’ll never be good enough. Other people have better lives than I do. God couldn’t really love me. Jennie Allen knows what it’s like to swirl in a spiral of destructive thoughts, but she also knows we don’t have to stay stuck in toxic thinking patterns. As she discovered in her own life, God built a way for us to escape that downward spiral. Freedom comes when we refuse to be victims to our thoughts and realize we have already been equipped with power from God to fight and win the war for our minds. In Get Out of Your Head, Jennie inspires and equips us to transform our emotions, our outlook, and even our circumstances by taking control of our thoughts. Our enemy is determined to get in our heads to make us feel helpless, overwhelmed, and incapable of making a difference for the kingdom of God. But when we submit our minds to Christ, the promises and goodness of God flood our lives in remarkable ways. It starts in your head. And from there, the possibilities are endless. Why I am selecting it: Negative self-chatter plagues me more than I’d like to admit. So when this was suggested to me on my Kindle last week, I was intrigued. Yes, it has a religious overtone — she’s a Christian author and I like her work. I liked it because even the title called me out and I wanted a non-woo woo approach to mindset. 8. You Are a Badass At Making Money by Jen Sincero Description: You Are a Badass at Making Money will launch you past the fears and stumbling blocks that have kept financial success beyond your reach. Drawing on her own transformation - over just a few years - from a woman living in a converted garage with tumbleweeds blowing through her bank account to a woman who travels the world in style, Jen Sincero channels the inimitable sass and practicality that made You Are a Badassan indomitable bestseller. She combines hilarious personal essays with bite-size, aha concepts that unlock earning potential and get real results. Learn to: •Uncover what's holding you back from making money Give your doubts, fears, and excuses the heave-ho Relate to money in a new (and lucrative) way Shake up the cocktail of creation Tap into your natural ability to grow rich Shape your reality - stop playing victim to circumstance Get as wealthy as you wanna be Why I am selecting it: I read this book years ago, but know it’s so helpful in getting out of the money stigma nad shame we bring to our adult lives and certain businesses. I love her snarky nature and wanted to dive in again to the beliefs surrounding money and how to break them. 9. No Excuses: The Power of Self-Discipline by Brian Tracey Description: No Excuses! shows you how you can achieve success in all three major areas of your life: Your personal goals: self-discipline can help you realize that you are responsible for your success and shows you how persistence really does pay off. Your business and money goals: self-discipline can make you a better leader and a better manager, help you close more sales and make more money, improve your time-management and problem- solving abilities, and make you more effective and successful at work. Your overall happiness: self-discipline can help you be happier, healthier, and more physically fit, and it can help you in your marriage and your relationships with your children and friends. Why I am selecting it: I am the queen of excuses for why I don’t need to start something … see my earlier recommendation of procrastination. But it’s not just business. It’s exercise, diets, connecting with others, sending emails, responding to texts…. so much that I always chalk up to not having enough self discipline. 10. Stop Missing Your Life by Corey Muscara Description: n Stop Missing Your Life, mindfulness teacher Cory Muscara takes us on a journey into the heart of what is required for real change, growth, and happiness. He exposes how the phrase "be present" has become little more than a platitude, imbued with the misguided message to be present just for the sake of being present, and reveals how to achieve true Presence: a quality of being that is unmistakably attractive about a person, and one that only comes when we've peeled back the layers of guarding that prevent us from being our full, honest, and integrated selves in the world. Muscara shows how we build internal walls, what he describes as a "Pain Box" inhibiting us from living a deeply connected and meaningful life. He offers a four-part FACE model (Focus, Allow, Curiosity, and Embodiment) that helps chip away at those walls and builds our capacity to experience the richness of our lives Stop Missing Your Life ultimately teaches how we can find peace in the chaos and become better people for our families, our communities, and our world. Why I am selecting it: I think COVID has taught me more than anything how to appreciate where I am — but I also think I have a lot to learn in how I show up present always — no matter how crazy or normal life is. I am really excited about the 10 books I've selected. I'm excited to share them and have discussions with you. I really do want to see what comes up for you while reading these. One thing I haven't mentioned yet - how do you join? Just go to malloryschlabach.com/bookcluband join the list. Do you feel like life is passing you by? This episode is for you. My guest on this episode just released a new book called Stop Missing Your Life: How to Be Deeply Present in an Unpresent World. Back in 2012, Cory Muscara decided to take a vow of silence for six months and live as a monk in Burma. During that time, Cory meditated for up to 14 hours a day, and wanted to come back to his normal life and share this peace with others. But immediately, Cory faced a challenge… How would he apply what he learned in silence to his everyday life? How would he find that peace in the throes of ‘reality', in hardships, triggers, and disagreements? Well, he's now an international speaker and teacher on the topics of presence and well being. He teaches Mindfulness-Based Leadership at Columbia University and Positive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. Cory was also named by Dr. Oz as one of the nation's leading experts on mindfulness, and his meditations have been heard more than 10 million times in over 80 countries. Cory Muscara is a super interesting person. Today, he is known for his work as a mindfulness teacher, author, podcaster, and speaker. You'll find his career path interesting- he started meditating to impress his hippie girlfriend. When that relationship didn't work out, he went all in, looked for the most challenging meditation training he could find and became a monk for 6 months in Burma where he meditated for 14+ hours per day under the instruction of Sayadaw U Pandita. Fully engaged, he wanted more. Not only does he have his Master's Degree in Positive Psychology from UPenn and teaches mindfulness-based leadership at Columbia University. He also currently serves as an assistant instructor for the positive psychology graduate program at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, he has a wide array of meditation training including the 2-year Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leader training, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), completed certification with Mindful Schools & Search Inside Yourself, and has trained in Mindfulness-Based Inquiry, Breathworks Chronic Pain with Vidyamala Burch, the Trauma Institute led by Bessel Van der Kolk. He is a 200-hour hatha yoga teacher, certified NLP & Eriksonian Hypnosis practitioner, and an Integrative Health Coach through Duke Integrative Medicine. “Presence gives us the capacity to experience what we’re experiencing, but with an internal container that can hold that experience in such a way that we aren’t completely overwhelmed or burdened by it.” I’ve had a long-held goal to interview someone like today’s guest for the podcast. An individual who spent time living in isolation as a monk while living inside the realities of chaos in today’s fast-paced world. So when I met my good friend Cory Muscara a year ago, it felt like divine timing! Cory is an international speaker and teacher on the topics of mindfulness and positive psychology - a journey that began with a desire to impress a girl. This ‘hippy’ college girlfriend sparked Cory’s interest in meditation. After their relationship broke down, Cory’s pain called him to take meditation more seriously. In turn, he spent six months in silence living as a monk in Burma where he’d meditated for over 14 hours a day. As a result of this experience, Cory is now in a beautiful position where he can bridge the gap between monk-like enlightenment - and those of us seeking truth amongst the triggers and challenges of everyday life. A frequent guest on the Dr. Oz show and an instructor of positive psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, Cory’s on a mission to help people embody the principles of mindfulness in a practical and relatable way. His meditations have been heard more than 10 million times in over 50 countries, and he lives on Long Island where he offers workshops and retreats.Cory is also the new author of Stop Missing Your Life. How To Be Deeply Present In An Unpresent World. In this book, Cory offers a roadmap that will help you reconnect with your life in a beautiful way. “The more we take care of each moment as it is, the more we actually take care of the next moment and subsequently the future.” Our conversation gets very meta, but it’s also highly practical. In this deep conversation, Cory explains how to create presence. A state when you experience the fullness of yourself - without shutting down, turning away, or numbing the sensations of the moment. In this episode, you’ll discover: What is presence - and how to deepen into it. Why curiosity is the opposite of fear. What Cory learned about life in a Bermese monastery. How to build a better relationship with the voice inside you. What is intuition? The pebble method that guides you to know what to do at any moment. Why being OK with not being yourself is the ultimate expression of self-love. The problem with trying to transcend the ego before you’ve befriended it.The “Good luck, bad luck - who knows...” parable for a better life. And more…I had so much fun with Cory and I know you’ll love this episode too. Check out this episode now and discover simple secrets for a more fulfilling life. “The opposite of fear is actually curiosity.” How to contact Get Cory’s New Book here: https://stopmissingyourlife.com/www.corymuscara.comwww.facebook.com/corymuscarahttps://www.instagram.com/corymuscarahttps://twitter.com/corymuscaraFor free meditations, book and app recommendations, text your email address to +16314054631. This episode is one to start off your new year with! This week’s conversation is with my dear friend Cory Muscara – international speaker and mindfulness teacher – all about his new book Stop Missing Your Life. In Stop Missing Your Life, Cory takes readers on a journey from “being present” to embodying “presence,” helping peel back the layers that prevent us from being our full, honest, integrated selves in the world. Muscara explains that most of us are living on autopilot, often so guarded that we aren’t experiencing the potential richness that life has to offer. Stop Missing Your Life talks about: How we build internal walls, which Muscara refers to as a “Pain Box,” that both protect us and inhibit us from living a deeply connected and meaningful life A four-part FACE model (Focus, Allow, Curiosity, Embodiment) that helps chip away at the walls and find presence Why it’s a risk to be our true selves in the world, and why safety (which does not mean comfort) is one of the missing ingredients to finding presence How we can make technology a part of our mindfulness practice–meditating with our devices, and also creating parameters around when and how we use technology His book and his teachings ultimately show how we can create new behaviors, stop self-sabotaging our growth, and let go of the things that hold us back. You can follow Cory at @corymuscara.

This episode on meditation is for you if you’ve ever said: I’ve tried meditating but I can’t clear my mind I’ve tried meditating but I can’t sit still that long I don’t have time for meditation My life is too busy and chaotic to have a regular meditation practice Meditation feels like work Meditation doesn’t do anything for me Running/Cooking/Gardening is my meditation… …then this episode is for you. This is a beginner’s guide for those of you who are interested in establishing a regular practice but don’t know how, or you’ve been frustrated by failed attempts in the past. Who is Cory Muscara? Cory Muscara is one of THE most important ambassadors of mindfulness in this country, because he’s taken this millenniums-old practice and made it accessible for the busy modern professional. Here’s a little bit about Cory: He’s the #1 most downloaded meditation instructor on the app Simple Habit He’s been featured on the Dr. Oz show He’s toured and spoken alongside Dan Harris, author of 10% Happier He runs the Long Island Center for Meditation He spent 6 months in silent meditation in Burma living as a monk and meditating up to 20 hours a day. In other words, this man knows his shit. So much so, I took my 72 year mother and 75 year old father – neither of whom had meditated in their lives – to Cory’s 3 day meditation retreat. They were begrudging going in. They came out the other side different people. My father has been meditating every day since. For those of you seasoned meditators, there’s still plenty of wisdom in this episode for you as well, by the very nature of the depth of Cory’s work. Enjoy.

WHERE TO FIND Cory ONLINE: Facebook Instagram Twitter Website Finding Your Home Online Course 31 Days of Mindfulness EPISODE SUMMARY: What drew me to Cory was his positive energy, which is why I wanted him on the show. He talks on how he became practicing mindfulness even in a world of chaos. Everyone can practice mindfulness and it can be different for everyone. You can do meditation, yoga, tai chi, and more, but where does someone even begin? As an expert in mindful meditation, Cory says it starts with some form of self-awareness. Ask yourself how you are doing emotionally, physically, spiritually, etc. For some, others can feel content with where they are, or it could be a huge wake up call to start making changes. Practicing mindfulness gives you the tools to use when you find yourself struggling with something. One of my wake up calls was when I realized that I wasn’t yelling at my kids because they were driving me crazy, it was because I wasn’t fully taking care of myself! Having that self-awareness has made a big difference in my own motherhood journey. Do you struggle with awareness and being present? Not only do I run multiple businesses, I’m also a mother and wife. It’s like living a rat race sometimes and at the end of the day, I forget about taking care of my needs because I’m just exhausted taking care of everyone else. But, no matter what, the universe is always telling us to slow down. Cory teaches us how to take the time to start listening to our body and taking care of ourselves. When you prioritize self care, it impacts everything else that’s important to us. “I think life is just a series of setting expectations for ourselves, failing in one way or another to meet those expectations, and having hope for what the next moment could look like.” - Cory Muscara Although some of us struggle with meditating for 1-5 minutes, Cory shares his experience meditating for 14 hours with monks in Asia for 6 months. My next guest, Cory Muscara, is one of the most knowledgeable people I know when it comes to meditation and mindfulness. He's a frequent guest on the Dr. Oz show and spent 6 months in silence practicing meditation 14+ hours a day. If you're struggling to manage the stress of everyday life - juggling work responsibilities, managing your kids schedules, finding time for you and your significant other, keeping the house clean, whatever it is - then I want you to consider meditation. Last year I was at my breaking point with stress and on a lark, I decided to give it a try. After the first 10 sessions on my Headspace App, I decided I would meditate for a year straight to see what, if any, positive effect it would have. That was the best decision I made last year. I tracked my well-being using a journal and spreadsheet everyday and that one change - meditating everyday - totally changed my life and well-being. If you think you want to change your life too, then listen to this episode with Cory. His insights, habits, and tips will help you start and maintain a healthy meditation practice today!
In Episode 021 of A Medicinal Mind: Wisdom and Wellbeing, we get into the world of mindfulness, meditation and the capacity of these practices, to relieve suffering and promote flourishing with founder of the Long Island Center for Mindfulness, Cory Muscara. To put it simply, Cory is one of the most fascinating people I have ever met. While we are all unique, yet paradoxically all of one collective whole, Cory's background and experiences are quite astonishing. Cory Muscara is the founder of the Long Island Center for Mindfulness, where he utilizes his extensive professional training in Mindfulness, Positive Psychology, and Integrative Health Coaching to facilitate a client's creation of, and movement toward, their optimal vision of health and wellbeing. Cory has undergone professional training to integrate mindfulness within healthcare, schools, and businesses, through teacher training programs in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) at UMass Medical School with Jon Kabat-Zinn, Mindful Schools, Search Inside Yourself, and Breathworks Chronic Pain. He has completed his Integrative Health Coach training at Duke Integrative Medicine, is a 200-Hour Certified Yoga Instructor, and holds a Masters degree in Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) from the University of Pennsylvania. In 2012, Cory spent six months in silence practicing mindfulness meditation 14+ hours a day as a Buddhist Monk in Southeast Asia. The experience taught him how powerful mindfulness can be as a transformative practice for cultivating greater peace, clarity, wisdom, and wellbeing in one's life, and became the inspiring force behind his mission to share this work with others. Cory currently serves as faculty at Columbia Teachers College where he teaches mindfulness to school leaders and principals, and is an assistant instructor for the Master of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) at the University of Pennsylvania, where he completed his graduate work. Cory has presented mindfulness to organizations such as Johnson & Johnson, Travelers, Prudential Insurance; universities such as NYU, Wharton Business School, and Dartmouth; a number of hospitals and healthcare systems in the New York area; and he regularly appears on the Dr. Oz show as a guest expert in the topic of mindfulness meditation. Cory's teachings and work with students stem from a deep passion for helping others, and personal experience with the transformative power of mindfulness, coaching, and positive psychology. He looks forward to helping you realize the same benefits he and his students have come to experience through this work. Formally speaking, Cory has undergone professional training to integrate mindfulness within healthcare, schools, and businesses, through teacher training programs in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) at UMass Medical School with Jon Kabat-Zinn, Mindful Schools, Search Inside Yourself, and Breathworks Chronic Pain. He has completed his Integrative Health Coach training at Duke Integrative Medicine, is a 200-Hour Certified Yoga Instructor, and holds a Masters degree in Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) from the University of Pennsylvania. Positive Yoga Coaching anyone? And just to make things interesting, in 2012, Cory spent six months in silence practicing mindfulness meditation 14+ hours a day as a Buddhist Monk in Southeast Asia. The experience taught him how powerful mindfulness can be as a transformative practice for cultivating greater peace, clarity, wisdom, and wellbeing in one's life, and became the inspiring force behind his mission to share this work with others. In our show, Cory and I have a curious discussion about mindfulness and meditation. What in the world do we mean when we say mindfulness anyway? Cory reflects on his background and rather remarkable course to get to his current work with the Long Island Center for Mindfulness. As part of the discussion, Cory lays out in exquisite detail, some of his approaches to cultivating a meditative practice with others, providing one of the most insightful practical examples I have ever heard when it comes to describing the meditative experience. Digging deeper, I push Cory to explore the word spirituality and ask him to draw upon his unique experiences to share his views of the world “spirituality” and perhaps what we should adopt as a more unifying collective perspective. Not wanting to forget the medical applications, Cory shares some of his knowledge having trained as a health coach incorporating principles of mindfulness and positive psychology into his work. In the end, we conclude the discussion exploring Cory's work expanding the practices of mindfulness and meditation with youth and the family environment. Cory even closes the show with one of the best endings we have had to date, perhaps only second to the hauntingly beautiful story told by my mentor Dr. Greg Gelburd at the end of Episode 010. I am so excited to share this conversation with you and incredibly grateful to have connected with Cory, thanks again to the thoughtfulness of another previous podcast guest, our resident positive Mapster Grace Cormier. And don't worry, Cory and Grace will certainly be back for more discussions and we further unpack the power of positive psychology coupled with a dedicated mindfulness practice. If you enjoy the show, please don't forget to share your thoughts as part of a review in I-Tunes. I struggle enough trying to figure out Facebook and the best ways to grow our community, so from all of us at A Medicinal Mind, we would be grateful for your kind words as part of a review in I-Tunes. And as always, we encourage you to share the show and all the offerings on our main page to others in your life that you believe would benefit, all in the effort furthering this joyful conversation. Deep Sessions V (124 bpm Deep with Attitude) The seven episodes of Deep Sessions should really be called Fifty Shades of Deep. It would have been a better title and a true depsiction of what those sessions are about. Yet I did not want to make an event of 7 concomitant uploads and felt like being a bit clinical. I want to keep the blurb to a minimum and let the deepnest talk Embarking in a avalanche of Deep House uploads. I buy a lot of Deep House tunes, yet upload very few true Deep House sets. Though I believe Deep House is where I find the most consistent Talent and great quality tunes, being a slut for vocals and pretty tunes, I tend to shy away from publishing any Deep House mixes. Willingly or not, I always fall into the trap of including soulful tracks when I try to go deep. Let’s hope that by the time I am done with Deep House Sessions, I will have published something which is true to the genre. Final word, I really tried thoughout the session to showcase great artists I never uploaded before.. For the ones I know and are not featured this time ( thinking of you Petros), please accept my absolute apologies. No particular order in the uploads but for the fact that I went up the bpm genre with every set. Here we go.
