1999 was a golden year for movies. That year saw the release of The Matrix, American Beauty, and Fight Club - which remain some of my all time favourites. The latter two are particular compelling as I look through my present-day lens and what they had to say about men & masculinity at the end of the millennium. Both American Beauty & Fight Club depict similar themes of (white) men grappling with middle-class consumerism and a lack of potency, trapped in a meaningless existence. In American Beauty, Lester Burnham opens the film by detailing his boring life - from the teenager who hates him, to his wife who doesn't respect him, and his cubicle dwelling job sucking his soul. The high point of his day is “jerking off in the shower.”Tyler Durden, the rebellious bad boy in Fight Club, tells the Narrator (who lives a similar flat-line as Lester):"Men have become mortgages, marriages, car payments, and fucking cable bills. We are the middle children of history, no purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War is a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives.”We could label Lester & the Narrator as living the archetype of The Domestic Man.What's fascinating for me is to observe how each of these men respond to their intolerable condition, and how that relates to the theme of “finding the Wild Man” that Robert Bly speaks about in the fairy tale of Iron John.In one of the teaching sessions I attended with Stephen Jenkinson, he asked us once: what is the most dangerous kind of animal? Some ventured to say “a wild animal.”He made the case that was untrue. For while a wild animal may be hazardous to humans, it is living connected to its nature and the pulse of life. A more dangerous creature that is often unpredictable and malevolent in its behaviour? The name for that is “feral” he told us.This is a creature that has failed to be domesticated.I think of this in the arc of Tyler Durden and The Narrator in Flight Club. What begins as an underground men's group, committed to living raw and alive again, morphs into a revolutionary cell (Project Mayhem) that attacks the data centres of credit card companies, aimed at liberating a new society. It remains somewhat ambiguous whether this actually happens or if it's a fantasy of the Narrator's psychosis. Now, while you may agree that predatory debt needs to be unshackled from humanity (as I do) you may have issues with the tactics. And it's clear the tone of the revolutionary effort becomes poisoned with toxic ideology. You could call this response 'feral'.For Lester Burnham in American Beauty, his inner fire is reawakened by an encounter with his daughter's teenage friend, a nymph-like cheerleader that becomes an inspiration for his salvation. (You might say she has taken on his anima projection - the erotic feminine in him he has suppressed).Suddenly, he finds the courage to quit is job, start lifting weights, smoke pot, and tell off his wife. He's a middle-aged man regressing back to his teen years to remember what it was like to actually enjoy life.Lester is aided by the young Buddha-like neighbour Ricky Fitts, who operates within society from a place of conscious non-attachment, preferring to film every moment of beauty that he comes across - including the infamous plastic bag dancing in the wind.In the scene where Ricky is watching the footage with his girlfriend, he says:"There's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once. And it's beautiful. […] It's like God wants me to notice it. To recognize all this beauty. Maybe it's the secret that the whole universe is trying to tell us. Something, we all know deep down but we all kind of forgot. And I don't know if my heart is gonna explode or what. But I'm grateful. I am so grateful.”The moment itself is a portal into wonder, for the characters and for the millions of viewers who saw the film.It certainly was for me, watching the film at 18 years old.Near the end of the film, Lester Burham awakens from the spell he had cast upon his daughter's girlfriend. She was not the Goddess incarnate, just an insecure young girl who was terrified of rejection. His character softens to her and he becomes more like a supportive Father.Lester realizes he has no one else to blame for his life. He had abandoned himself, convinced that it was someone else's job to “save him.”Robert A. Johnson would call this finally slaying his inner Mother Complex.Robert Bly might say, he has freed the Wild Man from the cage.It is now his task to cultivate his own connection to the primal erotic foundation of life.Today, many men find themselves in a similar predicament.Buried under mortgages, parenting, the daily grind of a job, lacking a deeper sense of direction & purpose. These days, it's “easier” then ever to get lost in addictions, distractions, and despair. And yet, there are a growing number of men willing to “seek the golden ball” that they lost long ago, and step up to the Wild Man's cage. With this in mind, my collaborator Deus and I have crafted a 3 month online journey: The Deep Masculine. This immersion brings together over a decade of exploration into mythopoetic maps, somatic skills, ritual rhythm, and the power of brotherhood - for men to awaken their primal birthright. The doors re-open March 14th.Today more than ever, we need men ablaze with courage, fiercely in love with life, and willing to bow in service to beauty.Onwards,Ianp.s. Unlock your mind's hidden wisdom—explore active imagination for personal insight and growth! --- Join and support the community: https://www.creationspaths.com/ In this episode, Charlie and Brian dive into _active imagination_, a technique developed by Carl Jung, which allows individuals to engage deeply with their unconscious mind to explore personal insights and growth. They guide listeners through the four stages of active imagination: _invitation, dialogue, cataloging, and ritualization_. The discussion includes practical advice, such as being mindful of the distinction between daydreaming and active imagination, and offers strategies to safely engage in this practice. They stress the importance of journaling and personal interpretation, avoiding standard symbolism guides, and suggest various ways to ritualize insights gained through this process. Charlie also recommends the book _Inner Work_ by Robert A. Johnson for further exploration of active imagination and dream work. Concluding with a unique self-directed prayer, Charlie invites listeners to consider active imagination as a powerful tool for self-discovery. What's the difference between mood and feeling?  Between emotions and values?  How do we grow our capacities for relationship, for deep values, in other words, how do we access the "feeling function" (Jung)?  This episode is an exploration of the feeling function, the common wounds associated with it, and some possibilities for developing a healthier "masculine" psyche.  I pull mainly from Robert A. Johnson's book He: Understanding Masculine Psychology, but also a little from Jung, and from my own experience.  Thanks for supporting this podcast.  I hope you hear and hint, a guess, for your own life.  Enjoy!

When I was sixty-one years old, I met one of the two or three wisest human beings I have ever encountered. His name was Robert A. Johnson. Our relationship had an enormous impact on me, one whose effects and treasures I am still sorting out fourteen years down the road. Astrology helps! At age eleven, Robert lost a leg when he was hit by a car. He told me that his childhood ended that day.  The year I was born – 1949 – he was in Zurich, Switzerland, studying psychology with Carl Jung and in analysis with Jung's wife, Emma.  He was the author of many books in a Jungian psychology vein, three million of which were sold. Most of them were on my bookshelf years before I met him. They never got dusty. Listen in ...

Join sculptor and poet Don Freas, author of In-Between: Creativity Set Free and Swallowing the World: New and Selected Poems, in a rich exploration of the relationship between meditation and creativity. Don describes how his practice of Liangong, a form of Qigong, deepens his somatic awareness in the studio and in life. He explains how his process of journaling, partly inspired by Robert A. Johnson's book Inner Work: Using Dreams and Active Imagination for Personal Growth, has deepened self-inquiry, and thereby, self-compassion. Don lets us in on his decades-long conversation with an inner wisdom figure he calls Sophie, a voice who regularly encourages his intuition and questions him when he goes off track. He describes Sophie as “a voice from the long history of humanity, or of the universe.” Don shares insights gained from many sources, including spiritual teacher Byron Katie, physicist David Bohm, Jungian analyst Robert A. Johnson, and Akashic Records teacher Linda Howe. Don takes us on a deep dive into the “material meditation” of making art. “When you look back,” he says, “your own accrued shape appears in the spaces between the things you've fashioned.”Don holds an MFA in Poetry from Bennington College and lives in Olympia, Washington, where an upcoming exhibit of his sculpture will take place at Childhood's End Art Gallery. In Jungian psychology, this technique is called “Active Imagination." Episode 6 of this podcast offers a similar version of this guided visualization with different music. Jung recorded his waking visions in his extraordinary illustrated journal, The Red Book. His meditative technique was recreated by MJ Dorian on his podcast Creative Codex. For deeper instruction, read "Inner Work: Using Dreams and Active Imagination for Personal Growth" by Robert A. Johnson. This meditation is a deep dive to be undertaken with care. Herbalist Hermine “Herself” Zook is the matriarch and the area's healer, homeopath, or witch, depending on the way the town looks at her. Meet Hermine (played by Bonnie's mother) here. Bonnie talks about the architecture of this novel, and how she struggled to find something beyond the traditional three-act structure. She shares her discovery of Sharon Blackie, and the realization that structure can take different forms. The conversation also references Jane Alison's Meander, Spiral, Explode. They talk about character development and what makes characters unique, referencing both Jungian psychotherapists Robert A. Johnson and James Hillman (author of The Soul's Code). Bonnie also discusses fairy tales in literary fiction, how to talk about contemporary and divisive issues like abortion and gun control in accessible ways, how to make the most of your settings, breathing life into mysterious characters, her revision process and much more. According to Snorri Sturlason's work "Ynglinga Saga", this family line supposedely started with a humanized version of the Vanir god, Njord (and his son, Freyr). The story states that Njord was a king in Uppsala, Sweden. Over the years the family of kings gained and lost land. The House of Ynglinga continued until it came to a man Named "Halvdan the Black". At this point his land controlled parts of Norway. Halvdan's son was supposedly Harold Fairhair, the first king of Norway, who is probably a historical figure. Season 2 Episode 2: Freyr's “Courtship” of Gerder (Part 2) This week Shawn and David wrap up the 2 part series on the story of how Freyr sends his servant, Skirnir, to propose to the giantess Gerdr on his behalf. Last week with them discussing Chapter 37 of Gylfaginning from the Prose Edda; however, this week them discussing its Poetic Edda counterpart, the poem, “For Skirnis”. Skirnir in this poem is…. uhhhh slightly more sinister in his approach to “coercing” Gerdr to say yes. Meaning of course he threatened her for 11 stanzas with a horrific fate if she doesn't agree to marry the Vanir god. David continues the connection to Percival from the Fisher King. The pair also deep dive into Skirnis' and Freyr's motivations and insecurities, and how we all have our own forms of imposter syndrome and ambitions to take risks (or make sacrifices) in life. Season 2 Episode 19 Part 1 of 2 Frey's "Courtship" of Gerdr Shawn and David tell the story of Frey the lovesick lover from Snori's Prose Edda  Frey shows up in relatively few stories, besides his arrival with the Aesir in a hostage exchange with the Vanir, Lokasenna, and Skirnismal - the story of Frey gaining the hand of the giantess Gerd, through the coercive efforts of his servant Skirnir.  Shawn and David talk about Frey as a fertility god and the archetypal Lover. David gives more detail on the myth of Percival, the Holy Grail, and the Fisher King, as a potential parallel to Frey's story and the existing Jungian analysis of the meaning behind Percival, the Hero who finds the Lover aspect. Next week look forward to Part 2 - Skirnismal from the Poetic Edda and more discussion of the Shadow aspects of Frey the Lover and how Percival finds true love and mature masculinity where Frey fails. Mandorla is Italian for the almond shape formed when two circles begin to overlap. Something new is created in the center. In this talk, Robert explores our Western, English speaking world's Grail Myth, as a representation of and guide to healing our inferior Feeling function given our culture's over reliance on thinking. I also go on a bit of a tangent on why reading history, especially from a psychological perspective, regarding the response to Covid-19 is very important.

On this episode, Jake and Gino interview none other than Hal Elrod. Hal Elrod is the author of one of the highest rated, best-selling books in the world, The Miracle Morning—which has been translated into 27 languages, has over 2,000 five-star Amazon reviews and is practiced daily by over 500,000 people in 70+ countries. Hal actually died at age 20. Hit head-on by a drunk driver at 70 miles per hour, his heart stopped for 6 minutes, broke 11 bones, and eventually woke from a coma to be told by doctors that he would never walk again. Not only did Hal walk, he went on to run a (52 mile) ultra-marathon and become a hall of fame business achiever—before the age of 30. Then, in November of 2016, Hal nearly died again—his kidneys, lungs, and heart on the verge of failing, which led to his being diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive form of cancer (acute lymphoblastic leukemia). After enduring the most difficult year of his life, Hal is now cancer-free and furthering his mission as the Executive Producer of The Miracle Morning Movie—a documentary that both shows you the morning rituals of some of the world's most successful people, as well as takes you around the world to show you the life-changing impact that Miracle Mornings are having, globally. All else would follow from this. On April 22, 2010 at 10:05 AM, as the direct result of an incredible series of “coincidences,” I met the late great Robert A. Johnson. Many of us have his books on our shelves – he sold 2.5 million of them, including He and She and We and my personal favorite, Balancing Heaven and Earth: A Memoir. He died on September 12, 2018 at the age of 97. I’m writing about him in this newsletter because he would have turned one hundred years old on May 26th of this year – and also simply  because I miss him. He was a good friend. When I was just an infant in diapers, Robert was studying directly under Carl Gustav Jung in Zurich. He was also in formal psychoanalysis with Jung’s wife, Emma. He’s known internationally as a “Jungian author,” which I suppose works as well as most labels do. There was a lot more to him than that, but instead of trying to “profile” him, let me tell you one of my favorite Robert stories. He used to travel to India pretty much every year. Once when he was about to present a talk there, he received a lengthy introduction in Hindi, a language which he did not speak. As he stepped up to the podium, he asked what had been said about him. He was told that he had been introduced as “an enlightened being” – which was kind of a shocker to him since he never spoke of himself in those terms. He inquired as to why such a thing had been said. And the man introducing him announced, straight-faced and serious, that the evidence was that Robert “didn’t eat much, didn’t say much, and didn’t do much.”  It’s funny, of course. But it really did illuminate something deep about Robert A. Johnson. Beyond his piercing intelligence and his profound insights, beyond his public identity as a world-class intellectual, there was simply a kind of magical silence that radiated from him – a quality of sheer stillness.  Enlightenment? Your guess is as good as mine. Listen in for more!

All of us have dreams that we chase passionately, and on some occasions, when we are about to quit, someone tells us what we need to hear, and it energizes us and gives us air and impulse. But sometimes, it is the complete opposite. We know what we want, and our friends and family advise us to move on and try something different. And in those cases, the best thing we can do is ignore everyone's opinion, go after our dreams, and keep trying until we make them real. In this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with the actor and producer at Book 11 Productions, Michael Steger. He is a Lifetime Member of The Actors Studio, and he has graduated Bachelor of Arts in Theatre/Theater from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona. He participated in multiple successful projects, including the 2008's TV series 90210 and True Blood, and the movie Ana Maria in Novela Land, among many others. We had a fantastic conversation about his journey on becoming an actor, why he quitted acting in high-school, and what made him go back to acting in College. He shared his thoughts on why people behave funny around those that are enthusiastically chasing their dreams. We also talked about turning weakness into strengths, the secrets for a long-lasting love relationship, how we attract our tribe through our behavior, and much more. Tune in and learn about Michael's journey into becoming a successful actor and his excitement for making constant leaps of faith. On this episode, I delve into what it was like to go through what some may call a Spiritual Awakening, but what I prefer to call a Spiritual Emergency. I speak about both the gifts and dangers of developing a spiritual practice, and how we often use spirituality, psychedelics and other forms of "magic" to avoid confronting our shadow. I speak about gurus, synchronicity, astrology, discernment, psychological projection and share my thoughts on "ascension," "5D" and other go-to spiritual concepts. This isn't an episode dismissing spirituality, but rather, a plea to bring nuance and critical thinking to the extremely useful & meaningful, (but often misused) practice of "Spirituality".  The book that I read from was Robert A. Johnson's Inner Gold. Songs featured: "Dream 13 (minus even)" by Max Richter, and "The Weaver" by Trevor Hall Interested in participating in the Lunar Circle? There are so many incredible things to let you know about today’s guest, Dr. Vince Ward.  I first met him when I was a graduate student in the Counselor Education program at the University of South Carolina and over the years we have run into each other at workshops and seminars. He always has a warm smile on his face and a kind word to offer. When I saw him last month at a VA event, I jumped at the opportunity to invite him onto the show. Vince is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has been mentored by a few of the best master therapists in the world, including Carl Whitaker and Robert A. Johnson. He draws on a number of techniques from a variety of approaches in his work. He is trained in Systemic, Psychodynamic, Jungian, and Gestalt therapies, among others. And as you will hear in our discussion, we share the same clinical supervisor, Dr. Russell Haber. For today’s episode I asked Vince Ward to discuss whatever he wanted to in regards to the field of talk therapy. Vince has been a therapist for many years even before licensing was a "thing" and I am always interested to hear his perspective and take on ideas within our field and profession. We cover quite a few topics and notions such as understanding the sides of the brain, the absence of the feminine in men, his view on telehealth, his road to becoming a therapist, what he hopes to be his legacy and why we therapists need to continue to work on ourselves and why we shouldn’t ever give up on self examination. We hope you enjoy this episode. You can learn more about Vince and connect with him on his website. Day #31 - Continuing Improvement   Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers. -Harry Truman  Read good books with a highlighter in your hand. Mark the passages that stand out. Put the book away and read others. Come back to this book sometime in the future and have a different color highlighter in your hand. Notice that you highlight different passages than you did previously. You are ready to learn something new that you weren’t ready to learn the last time you read that book. Repeat this periodically to learn new things and to remember what you have forgotten since the last reading. Gather knowledge and apply the learning. Don’t just acquire facts uselessly. Practice what you learn and take notes in your journal about the results. Review your journal frequently and you will learn from yourself.    Leadership Resources *   Leadership Modules: The Unbound Leader: Unlocking Your Inner Potential https://synervision.kartra.com/page/unboundleader    Books: Extraordinary Relationships: A New Way of Thinking About Human Interactions (Roberta Gilbert) http://amzn.to/HuEHlG Master Leaders: Revealing Conversations with 30 Leadership Greats (George Barna) http://amzn.to/HxjfLS Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life (Henry Cloud and John Townsend)  http://amzn.to/HVFjQn As A Man Thinketh (James Allen) http://amzn.to/MQk1qD Think and Grow Rich (Napoleon Hill) http://amzn.to/1teERAl Twist: How Fresh Perspectives Build Breakthrough Brands (Julie Cottineau) http://amzn.to/2cBWjx9 Platform: How to Get Noticed in a Noisy World (Michael Hyatt) http://amzn.to/2cwxAxe Meeting the Shadow: The Hidden Power of the Dark Side of Human Nature (Connie Zweig and Jeremiah Abrams) https://amzn.to/2UaUYBx Owning Your Own Shadow: Understanding the Dark Side of the Psyche (Robert A.
