The mission of The Pilates Diaries Podcast is to share the stories of the impact of Pilates to help you live and move with more joy, physical vitality, and renewed vigor. Pilates was a somewhat unknown word until it started creeping into conversation somewhere around the 2000s- maybe even before then depending on who you asked and amongst which circles, and has largely remained and enigma for many reasons- one of which perhaps is that Pilates really has to be experienced to be understood. There are now a wide range of Pilates styles available when you attend a Pilates class, perhaps borne from the variation of interpretations of how Pilates was originally taught by its founder, Joseph Pilates. With The Pilates Diaries Podcast we're inviting Pilates enthusiasts around the globe to share with us what they've noted down in their Pilates Diary. Our hope is that the Pilates Diaries Podcast goes some way to answering the question " What is it that makes Pilates so special?" We'll take a privileged peek into the Pilates Diaries of our guests to gain a greater insight into the impact Pilates can have in all of our lives and contribute to the health and wellbeing of the community at large. I welcome you along for the journey and welcome your comments and discussions through the links found on your favorite podcast platformEnjoy.

Our guest in this episode is Miriam Jones from Motion and Repose in Melbourne.  Miriam is a passionate mentor and teacher trainer of the next generation of Pilates instructors and runs a small home studio in Melbourne's northern suburbs. [01:23] Miriam elaborates on her background as a dancer who graduated, left Melbourne to see the world and got hooked on yoga and Pilates in Scotland. She decided to return to Australia, get a Pilates qualification and enter the fitness industry.[04:05] Miriam's early Pilates experience and she remembers the heated floor, and her body feeling like it had been “put back together”. She stayed with Mat Pilates and didn't get on the equipment until she came back to Australia. [06:04] Miriam recalls that in 1998 people in the UK only seemed to go to Pilates for rehabilitation, so she was sharing classes with a mix of generally older people. Most people were not familiar with Pilates, which they confused with yoga.[08:31] Miriam explains that despite never having any goal to be a movement teacher, she moved into teaching quite quickly, keen to share the benefits of Pilates. Despite 20 years of teaching, she still feels like she is only at the beginning of exploring her relationship to the body.[11:41] Miriam's mentor Zosha Piotrowski, seeing magic in Miriam and helping her deliver it, and Claire Norgate, also a member of the Australian Fitness Network, who was a role model as a teacher and mentor. [15:09] Miriam describes the Pilates available in Brisbane in 2001 was taught by physiotherapists and, although enjoyable, it was also restrictive, and that was the incentive for her to launch her group Pilates classes in church halls and community centres.[19:58] Miriam acknowledges that her way of teaching Pilates wasn't going to appeal to everybody and that was okay with her, but if something feels right, she knows to grab it and not let go.[21:14]  Miriam discusses working in a team rather than running a studio, and that gave her the time to develop as a workshop presenter, mentor, and teacher trainer. [27:42] Miriam's path in Brisbane, setting up classes in fitness environments, then doing more training and meeting Zosha and Claire in Sydney which led to her joining the Australian Fitness Network Pilates team, became a Stott Pilates teacher trainer, started delivering anatomy courses. Eventually, she opened her own studio.[30:33] Miriam reveals that what Pilates has taught her is the importance of her relationship to her body, and that the way it moves affects the way she thinks and feels and vice versa.[32:52] Miriam's plans for the future, and she talks about re-launching her six-month mentoring program, delivering more teacher training, building her studio, and organising more retreats and workshops.[34:24] Miriam's advice to someone starting out in Pilates is not to try and make it perfect, just commit to doing it. Motion and ReposeInstagramFacebookThe Pilates Diaries PodcastWebsiteFacebookInstagramEpisode SponsorsTRIMIOPilates Reformers Australia10% off with min. $100 spend - use PILATESDIARIES21Whealthy-Life10% off - use PILATESDIARIESToeSox Australia15% off with min. $49 spend - use PILATESDIARIES21

He felt torn between the Physio Pilates model and traditional Pilates model.[08:41] Shift to valuing quality and freedom of movement over core stability and the profound changes in his autonomic nervous system.[14:10] Richmond reveals some of the challenges he faces with Pilates, how he avoids some of what he finds hard, that involves pain and discomfort.[15:36] Richmond was attracted in to the depth of information about anatomy and movement sequencing.[16:04]  Richmond explains  the difficulties he experienced, his working environment where deepening understanding wasn't encouraged.[17:08] Nearing burnout before discovering Tension and Trauma Release Exercises (TRE). The trauma informed model was transformative - to examine the why behind bracing, tightness and collapse, and bring body-mind together.[23:36] TRE experienced as a “great liberation” - getting out of the way and letting his body fix itself. He distinguishes between looking at trauma from an external, psychosocial perspective versus looking at it from the level of the body – why his body was freezing or collapsing.[28:57] The effects of COVID restrictions on access to movement and social interactions.[30:16] Been Coordinator of TRE in Australia for 10 years; connections between TRE and spontaneous movement techniques in other cultures. [33:37] Returning to Pilates world, educating movement teachers to reintegrate tremoring responses, rather than dismissing them – from a top-down, conscious mind approach to a bottom up, body approach.[34:47] Unimaginable changes since beginning movement journey - becoming softer, less rigidity of mind, relationships.[38:17] Vision to integrate neurogenic movement into Pilates, giving teachers extra layers to teaching. [40:51] Tremoring before Pilates to remove tension patterns; used afterwards when body is tired and able to go into deeper level tremoring; used during Pilates can give profound healing.[42:10] The effect of Pilates can be so much more than just a movement experience, can have a profound effect on relationships because of a better state in their physical body.[43:30] Richmond has a free online course for listeners interested in exploring TRE.TRE AustraliaWebsiteFacebookThe Pilates Diaries PodcastWebsiteFacebookInstagramEpisode SponsorsTRIMIOPilates Reformers Australia10% off with min. $100 spend - use PILATESDIARIES21Whealthy-Life10% off - use PILATESDIARIESToeSox Australia15% off with min. $49 spend - use PILATESDIARIES21

This was the beginning of understanding how to link body concepts to find technical breakthrough in a high-level skill pursuit,[5:34] Zac recalls his first impressions of working with Andrew in a small group setting with some ballet demi-gods, and Pilates giving him a sense of alignment, engagement, and perfect tuning.[11:14] When Zac receives a strong grounding through Paul Cini's APMA focus on clinical application and the connection of anatomy and physiology. He also credits Wendy Smith (Studio 303) and Steph Glickman (Armature Pilates).[16:12] Zac describes other influences on his teaching – the somatic approach, Franklin, Ideokinetics, Skinner Releasing, Body Mind Centring and Continuum, and Feldenkrais.[17:01] Bruce asks how martial arts and Aikido added to the blend of influences.[22:31] Zac describes his dislike of set programming and how it feels antithetical to his personal experience of Pilates. She tried some mat classes held on site and was blown away.[03:40] Bruce and Jakki contrast knowing anatomy intellectually with their reactions to experiencing Pilates in their own bodies.[06:05]  Jakki's training and integration of Pilates into everything else she was doing and how her family and fellow physiotherapists reacted.[08:37] Jakki recalls her shock at discovering how inflexible her shoulders were and how the effect of working on them under the guidance of a Pilates instructor, eased her headaches.[11:09] Jakki says there were no negatives to her training, but she did feel the odd one out amongst the ballerinas.[13:17] Jakki lists some of the people who inspired her along her journey – fellow Pilates and Gyrotonic instructors, and Mollie Joyce who partnered with her to buy into the Pilates Centre Mosman.[16:14] Jakki talks about her studio – its history, the variety in the clients and how it is a beautiful space where people can grow in confidence, and how the diversity means she is never bored.[18:57] Bruce and Jakki recall their shared Gyrotonics training.[19:34] Jakki explains the roadblocks along the way when clients don't “get it” and how her search for new skills led to Gyrotonics and then learning about breathing. [21:59] “Pure Pilates” for Jakki is connecting with the mind and body. [23:25] Her breath journey began with a five-day physiotherapy course that was not what she was expecting. [26:25] Bruce asks about the changes Jakki has experienced through breath work and Jakki mentions better sleep, more energy and easy breathing when running. [29:14] The biggest turning point for Jakki was the commitment of buying a studio.[31:02] The changes in Jakki that she couldn't have imagined at the start of her movement journey have been the mind body connection, tuning into a deeper part of self and having more tolerance of others and empathy.[33:21] Jakki's plans for the future have been shaped by all the changes that have happened in the last few years like COVID. With the help of Shani Morton and the team, Jakki has taken the business in new directions. Online learning and teaching and the effect of COVID on what time clients want to exercise, has created more opportunities.[35:47] Bruce wraps up by asking what advice Jakki would give her younger self and people starting off in the industry – try everything, work for everyone, watch how each studio operates, discover what you're naturally good at (you'll know). The Pilates Centre MosmanWebsiteInstagramFacebookTess Graham and BreatheAbilityWebsiteThe Pilates Diaries PodcastWebsiteFacebookInstagramEpisode SponsorsTRIMIOPilates Reformers Australia10% off with min. $100 spend - use PILATESDIARIES21Whealthy-Life10% off - use PILATESDIARIESToeSox Australia15% off with min. $49 spend - use PILATESDIARIES21

Our guest on this episode is Tania Huddart - owner of Hearts and Bones Pilates in New Zealand, and delivers internationally accredited teacher training programs.[01:23] Tania talks about her life before Pilates, how dance was all she was interested in, and how she just fell into working for the Royal Academy of Dance as an International de facto teacher. She discovered Pilates in a dance magazine and tried it out because of her injuries.[03:56] Tania labels her first session at Lesley Ackland's studio in London as overwhelming and a revelation that she was not as strong as she thought she was. Three months later she had a whole new body.[06:02] After Lesley offered Tania the opportunity to apprentice at the studio, Tania started working with people who were not dancers and had to learn to put herself in other people's bodies.[07:50] Tania describes the Pilates world as being very small in 1995.[09:57] Tania and Bruce talk about the miraculous transformations she was seeing in studio clients and the sense of community and connection in a Pilates setting.[13:23] Bruce asks Tania if she was experiencing any roadblocks in her Pilates progress at that time and she talks about lacking upper body strength.[15:00] Tania describes Lesley's ability to work with a group, but still be specific for each person.[15:53] Bruce and Tania talk about some of the phenomenal teachers that she met around that time.[17:49] Bruce delves into Tania's time spent in California where she was involved with both dance and Pilates.[19:59] Tania continues her story with her move back to New Zealand, where she opened a studio in Wellington and taught for 15 years.[21:01] Bruce asks about the hidden gems Tania discovered through Pilates.[22:26] Tania elaborates on some things that concern her about Pilates teacher training, that there aren't a lot of informed teachers that can inspire people, and how her passion is to support, help, and be a mentor for these teachers.[28:20] Tania talks about the death of her best friend being the catalyst to her dedicating her life to Pilates.[30:54] Bruce explores the path Tania has been on since and she mentions the part he has journeyed with her.[31:40] Tania looks back at her initiative, Always Pilates, an online resource for teachers and clients that the world was not yet ready for but that brought her into contact with people like Phillip Beach who changed her life.[34:04] Bruce invites Tania to look at how Pilates has changed her - body, mind, and spirit.[36:58] Tania explains why business knowledge is important, why she is a business coach and that there are often smarter ways to do things. She introduces her current project: Teaching With Confidence.Contact TaniaInstagramTeaching Movement with ConfidenceHearts and Bones Pilates, New ZealandWebsiteInstagramFacebookThe Pilates Diaries PodcastWebsiteFacebookInstagramEpisode SponsorsTRIMIOPilates Reformers Australia10% off with min. $100 spend - use PILATESDIARIES21Whealthy-Life10% off - use PILATESDIARIESToeSox Australia15% off with min. $49 spend - use PILATESDIARIES21

Our hope is that the Pilates Diaries Podcast goes some way to answering the question " What is it that makes Pilates so special?"
