In Part 2 of my conversation with retreat leader Marybeth Donahoe, we get specific. What did Marybeth learn from her most recent retreat in Peru — and what is she carrying into Mexico? Who is genuinely ready for an experience like this? We dig into what "midlife" actually means for the women we work with, why being held by other women is something many of us have been quietly taught to resist, and what we hope women will be able to say six months after they leave. We close with the practical fears that most often stop women from saying yes — and what to do if you're sitting with a "but."Missed Part 1? What gets in the way of feeling connected to ourselves — and what does it actually take to come back? In this episode I'm joined by Marybeth Donahoe, yoga teacher and retreat leader, for a conversation about the societal and neurological forces that pull us out of alignment, the yoga tradition's model of unification across mind, body, and heart, and why intuition isn't woo — it's your body's accumulated intelligence asking to be heard. We also talk about how psychological safety and community create the conditions for genuine change, and how Marybeth and I found each other and started building something together. This is Part 1 of a two-part conversation. Part 2 covers the retreat itself, who it's for, and what we hope women carry home.Find Marybeth:www.rewildyoursoulretreats.comwww.mbtheyogi.comInstagram: @mbtheyogiYouTube: MB The YogiThe RetreatRewrite Your Power: Listening to Your Quiet Authority — a 7-day retreat in Mexico, co-hosted by Alex Howson and Marybeth Donahoe. I've been through a similar trajectory that so many have in food and body image recovery. In my twenties, I got to a place where food was less of a concern. I wasn't skipping meals anymore and I was balancing those meals and eating all macronutrients. I felt much more grounded and regulated. But, the body image struggles continued to hang around. I felt good in my body but I still hated the way my body looked. So, I tried every mainstream approach. I tried the stronger over skinny approach where I lifted a lot of heavy weights and gained a lot of muscle. Yet still, it felt like it was never enough. So, I tried the unconditional body love approach and tried to love my body as it was. No matter how much I tried to challenge my internalized beliefs about my body, nothing would budge. I still looked in the mirror every day and internally said, "ick". When I started somatic therapy, it wasn't with the intention of trying to heal my body image. I was focused on healing from a trauma response. What I wasn't expecting was that I would find myself caring less and less about how my body looked the safer I felt. In this week's episode, I chat about: A somatic, nervous system, attachment perspective to body image struggles Research that points to body image struggles are more about alterations in your brain and nervous system than it is about your body Strategies to increase interoception, a key part of body image recoveryYou can read the transcript to this episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/reframe-your-reflectionI've opened the doors back up for the next 48 hours until midnight on Tuesday 5/26 to the Somatic Eating® Program. When asked how you're doing, do you thoughtlessly respond, “I'm good!”? Are you being truthful? Are you really okay? Sometimes we fail to see the ways that we're struggling, even though the body is constantly communicating with us. Feelings of anxiety, depression, fear, and anger manifest in all sorts of creative ways through our physical selves. If we really want to live healthy and abundant lives, we must heed the body's signals. As we listen to the singsong of the birds, consider what your body might be trying to tell you in this season of life. The Real Truth About Health Free 17 Day Live Online Conference Podcast
From social connection to placebo science, Dr. Rankin shows how belief, curiosity, and supportive community play powerful roles in healing the whole person. #PlaceboEffect #HealingCommunity #BodyWisdom
SYNOPSIS:This episode explores the idea that creativity is fundamentally embodied rather than purely mental. Gary describes the body as an “interface” or instrument through which creative energy flows, emphasizing that without the body, expression itself wouldn't be possible. Creativity is framed as a collaborative process – between body, mind, and a larger “divine” or universal intelligence – rather than something generated solely by individual effort. Gary and host, Ali Mezey, challenge the common mind-body split and reframe the body as an active participant in creative expression, not just a vessel.A central theme is the role of somatic practices (movement, breathwork, dance) in unlocking creativity. Gary shares his personal journey from disconnection and shame around the body to rediscovering it as a source of intelligence and creative flow. Through somatic work, he was able to release stored tension, trauma, and self-judgment, which had previously blocked his creative expression. The conversation highlights how presence in the body – rather than over-identification with thoughts or past experiences – can open access to what is often described as “the zone” or a flow state. The discussion also touches on identity, trauma, and how experiences are “held” in the body. While both Ali and Gary acknowledge that emotions and trauma can manifest physically, they question simplistic or overly rigid interpretations of this idea. They emphasize the importance of approaching the body with curiosity and presence rather than trying to “fix” it. The body is seen as intelligent and self-organizing, capable of healing when given the right conditions, though not everything can or needs to be resolved. Finally, the conversation addresses the practical side of creativity – discipline, skill, and sharing work with others. While creativity may flow naturally, bringing it into the world often requires structure, support, and persistence. Gary reframes discipline as something that can be supported through somatic awareness and addressing internal resistance (like the inner critic). Ultimately, creativity is portrayed as both a deeply personal and relational process – one that involves not only expression but also connection, refinement, and, for many, the courage to be seen. I have a saying, Embody first, Examine later. When you're feeling like you're drowning in body image concerns or food impulses, your prefrontal cortex is shut down. This is the part of your brain where you rationalize and can think through what is going on. When that part of your brain is diminished, it can be much harder to try to understand what message your body is trying to send you through food cravings or body image worries. At this point, what is often needed is non-verbal connection with your body. Your body needs support in assessing that it is safe.In this week's episode, I chat with Beverly Atkins, Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner and the founder of Pauseture, about: The impact of movement on body awarenessNavigating body image and self perceptionCultural influences on body image and how the practice of Feldenkrais can support in updating your experience of your bodyHow to shift focus from appearance to sensationUnderstanding food behaviors through movement and nervous system attunementYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/feldenkrais-practice-can-improve-body-imageLastly, the doors to the Somatic Eating® Program are officially open!!! A native of the North Chicago suburbs, Ronna Rochell started dancing at age 5. At that young age, she started with creative movement classes, and by the time she was in junior high, she had evolved into a serious modern dance student. She was fortunate to have a fabulous teacher from junior high and high school who taught her the technique of Martha Graham and Alwin Nikolai. Her dance teacher's name was Carol Walker, who later went on to serve as Dean of the Department of Dance at SUNY Purchase. At age 16, after studying dance for a summer at the American Dance Festival at Duke University, Ronna auditioned and made it into one of the premiere modern dance companies in Chicago, the Joseph Holmes Dance Theatre. She was an apprentice with the company and performed with them as well. After dancing in college at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, she went on to pursue her MFA in dance at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, earning her degree in 1989. Right before graduation, she auditioned and was accepted into the New Dance Ensemble apprentice program. So after graduation, in 1989, she moved to Minneapolis and apprenticed with the dance company for one year. Next, inspired by the Nancy Hauser Dance Company, she was invited to join the company in 1991. Ronna was a member of the Nancy Hauser Dance company for two years. She finished her modern dance career dancing in a Walker Art Center sponsored event in Gerry Girouard's choreography on the beach of Cedar Lake in 1993! Since then she has gone back to her teaching roots and started her own business, BodyWisdom, teaching yoga, Pilates and fitness classes, as well as bringing chair yoga into senior living communities. More recently, she rebooted her dance career by going into musical theatre as she performed with Theatre 55 and had a fabulous time dancing in the productions of Pippin (2019) and A Chorus Line (2023). Now Ronna focuses on continuing teaching yoga and fitness classes, spending time with her three adult sons, tandem biking with her husband Steve, and enjoying cross-country skiing, even racing at the American Birkebeiner. She is proud to say that she skied the Kortelopet at this event- 29 kilometers- and she just received her 10 year plaque for the Kortelopet - quite an achievement for her!

Learn Dr. Rankin's six-step healing process, how to deal with resistant parts, and why your “Self” must lead the journey—not fear, control, or trauma. #SelfHealing #EmpoweredHealth #IFSModel
In this deeply intimate and thought-provoking episode, Ali sits down with somatic sex educator and healer Ariel Szabo to explore the intersection of sexuality, power, trauma, and transformation. The conversation opens with a bold question: Why has human society been shaped by domination – and what does that have to do with our relationship to sexuality? From there, Ariel and Ali unpack how systems of control – historically rooted in conquest and oppression – extend into our bodies, our relationships, and especially our sexual lives.Ariel shares her personal journey through early sexual trauma, sex work, and being trafficked, revealing how shame and vulnerability can be weaponized to maintain control. Yet, rather than remaining trapped in that paradigm, she describes a path of reclamation – one grounded in embodiment, agency, and the rediscovery of sexual energy as life force.Together, they explore how shame functions both as a necessary human signal and a powerful tool of suppression, particularly around sexuality. They discuss how many people dissociate into “performative” sexuality – shaped by media and conditioning – leaving them disconnected, unsatisfied, and emotionally unfulfilled.A central theme emerges: pleasure as a gateway to connection. When experienced consciously and embodied, pleasure becomes a pathway to self-awareness, intimacy, and even spiritual awakening. When disconnected, it becomes escapism – mirroring addictive patterns rather than nourishing the soul.Ariel also introduces practical insights into working with sexual energy, including how to build capacity for sensation, move energy through the body, and shift from fear or overwhelm into grounded presence. The episode culminates in a powerful reflection on healing and purpose. Ariel recounts her transition out of exploitation, a life-altering health crisis that catalyzed her spiritual awakening, and her eventual integration of sexuality, psychedelics, and embodiment into her current work.Ultimately, this conversation is both a personal testimony and a cultural critique – arguing that sexual healing is not just individual, but collective. A more embodied, liberated relationship to sexuality, they suggest, could fundamentally reshape how we relate to power, connection, and each other. To be an angel to the podcast, click hereTo read more about the podcast, click hereMORE ALI MEZEY:Website: www.alimezey.comBody Mapping Video LibraryPersonal Geometry® and the Magic of Mat Work Course information:www.alimezey.com/personal-geometry-foundationsTransgenerational Healing Films: www.constellationarts.comConstellation Work is a highly effective method to delve into healing transgenerational trauma, unburdening consequent generations from the influences of traumas which can be transmitted epigenetically.MORE ARIEL SZABO:Website: SacredMoonflowerAuthor, Substack: TheEroticFrontierWomen's Retreat in Peru - April, 2026Ariel's beautiful article on Sex MagicARIEL'S BIO:Ariel Szabo is a writer, somatic sex educator, sexological bodyworker, and psychedelic medicine practitioner based in Los Angeles. SYNOPSIS:In this guided body scan, listeners are invited to shift their awareness from the busy cognitive mind into the full, three-dimensional experience of the body-mind. Beginning in the head and slowly moving downward, the meditation uses the imagery of a glowing sphere of consciousness traveling through the throat, heart, solar plexus, belly, and pelvic floor. As attention illuminates each area, participants are encouraged to notice sensations, emotions, breath, and subtle impulses without judgment, allowing awareness itself to soften tension and deepen embodiment. Kiran shares how jaw pain, anxiety, and restricted self-expression first led her inward, and how that journey eventually became a calling toward acupuncture and the healing arts. Together, she and John explore what acupuncture actually does, how Eastern and Western frameworks can both help explain it, and why the body often knows long before the mind catches up. This conversation moves beyond needles and technique into something deeper: intuition, receptivity, nervous system regulation, and the practice of letting the body guide your life. If you have ever felt disconnected from yourself, unsure how to trust your body, or curious about acupuncture as more than just pain relief, this episode is for you. Many high-performing women feel like they should have food, weight, and health figured out by now.You track. You follow the rules. You try to eat “clean.” Or maybe you quietly eat less and less because it feels safer that way.But despite doing everything right… your weight won't shift, your energy feels off, and food still takes up too much space in your mind.In this episode of Body Led by Design, Melissa breaks down two of the most common eating archetypes she sees in driven, high-responsibility women:The Perfection-Driven ControllerThe Chronic RestrictorThese patterns often look different on the surface but share the same root: the belief that your body can't be trusted. You'll learn why these patterns develop, how diet culture and stress shape your relationship with food, and what it actually takes to rebuild trust with your body again. This episode is part of Melissa's Eating Archetypes series, designed to help you recognize your patterns with curiosity instead of judgment—and begin shifting them in a sustainable way.In This Episode You'll LearnThe difference between the Perfection-Driven Controller and the Chronic RestrictorWhy control around food often comes from fear, not disciplineHow diet culture teaches women to outsource their body's wisdomWhy intuitive eating doesn't mean “eating whatever you feel like”The physiological effects of chronic restriction on metabolism and hormonesWhy hunger cues disappear when they've been ignored for yearsHow stress and nervous system dysregulation influence eating patternsA practical tool you can use today to begin rebuilding body awarenessFree Resource: Start Rebuilding Body TrustIf today's episode resonated, Melissa created a guide to help you understand why weight loss often stalls—even when you're doing everything “right.”Download the free guide:The Real Reason Your Weight Isn't Shifting
As I was editing this week's podcast episode, I accidentally deleted half of it and thought it was gone forever. At first, my heart sank, I was in shock, the blood drained from my face, and I literally said out loud, "Nooooooo!!!"I was ready to call it and my brain started quickly going through my options. As I went through my options, I paused and wanted to connect with my experience of this. I felt the sadness of these words I took the time to speak would be lost forever. I took a moment to grieve this. Giving myself space to feel and move through what was present, I noticed myself regulate. I was ready to choose the option of re-recording and trying to get this podcast out when I could. Then, my husband told me to give him ten minutes and he was able to find the lost content. The interesting thing was I had a mixture of emotions when he found it. I had already grieved what was lost and was getting excited about what I could say differently when I re-recorded and then also relief that these recording was recovered and I could move forward editing the rest and getting it out to you. This is what binge eating recovery can be like: a mixture of highs and lows of being so excited that the binge eating is decreasing and then grief at saying goodbye to something that has supported you for so long and grief at all the reasons that this food behavior came in to help you feel safe and protect you. In this week's episode: I read 3 different Binge Eating Reddit Stories I explore a trauma, somatic, nutritional, and nervous system perspective about what might support these individuals in their binge eatingI get into topics such as binge-restrict cycle, binge eating as a response to nervous system dysregulation, binge eating as a response to trauma, weight stigma, and body controlI offer explorations around binge eating that you might play with for yourself I hope you enjoy this episode and if there is ever a topic you would like me to explore on these Reading Reddit Stories episodes, email me and let me know! If you've ever said "I'll eat later, I just need to get through this first" — this episode is for you.In this episode, we're going deep on the first of the five eating archetypes: the High-Functioning Undereater. This is the pattern I see most often in driven, high-achieving women — and honestly, one I know personally. We talk about why skipping meals isn't just a busy schedule problem — it's a diet culture wound wearing a different outfit. We cover what's actually happening in your body when the scale won't budge no matter what you eat, why "just try harder" will never work on a chronically under-resourced body, and the 3 small shifts you can make this week to start rebuilding trust with your body.If you're a female entrepreneur or high-achieving woman who feels behind, inconsistent, and like a failure around food no matter how hard you try — this episode will help you finally understand why, and what to do instead. In this episode:Where the High-Functioning Undereater pattern actually starts (hint: long before adulthood)The surprising link between diet culture, people-pleasing, and high achievementWhy your hormones conserve body fat when you're chronically under-fueledThe start-over cycle that keeps you stuck — and why willpower won't fix it3 practical shifts to start this week: breakfast, blocked lunch, and snacksWhat it actually takes to become an intuitive eater (and why "just listen to your body" doesn't work yet)Chapters00:00Introduction to Eating Archetypes02:38Understanding the High Functioning Under09:28The Impact of Diet Culture11:52Practical Steps for Nourishment17:37Building Intuitive Eating Skills20:29Conclusion and Program IntroductionNot sure which eating archetype you are?

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit stayorgo.substack.comI had the opportunity to sit down live with my dear friend, Chandra Zas, to talk about her chapters in The Handbook for Human Potential. And while at first glance this might seem like a departure from our usual stay-or-go conversations, it is anything but.Because before you can make a clear decision about your marriage, you have to rebuild trust with yourself. So many of us have been trained to override our bodies. We override exhaustion. We override sadness. We override anger. We override our no. We override our intuition. And then, standing at one of the most consequential crossroads of our lives, we expect clarity to magically appear.Of course it feels like chaos. In this episode, we explore what it means to come home to your body in a grounded, practical way. We talk about early conditioning and shame. About how coping behaviors are often attempts at soothing a dysregulated nervous system. About the difference between demands and requests, and how that shift alone can transform the emotional architecture of our relationships. At its core, this conversation is about embodiment. About understanding that self-trust is not built through analysis alone, but through learning to feel and respond to your own internal signals with respect. If you are navigating uncertainty, especially around divorce, this episode invites you to slow down. To return to the foundation beneath the decision. To rebuild the connection that makes any choice — stay or go — something you can stand behind with steadiness.Show Notes:Subscribe to Stay or Go on SubstackChandra's WebsiteHandbook for Human Potential: An Accessible Guide to Personal Growth - Chandra Zas, Britta Jo and OthersChandra Zas's chapters: Chapter 0 and Chapter 10Handbook for Human Potential Amazon reviewsNo Bad Kids - Janet LansburyNonviolent Communication - Marshall B. Send a textWhat happens when the very tools meant to heal you—breathwork, yoga, mindfulness—become ways to silence your inner wisdom? In this deeply vulnerable conversation, I sit down with Devin Scott, founder of Find Your Meaning, a body-based coach, who shares his recent experience of ignoring his body's signals in a relationship—and what he has learned about "healing" from that experience. We recorded this episode in early December, just days after Devin went through a painful breakup. Instead of presenting a polished, "healed" version of himself, he brought his raw, real experience into our conversation—and what emerged is one of the most honest explorations of body wisdom, emotional intelligence, and the shadow side of "wellness" that I've ever had. This conversation will shift how you think about healing, emotions, and what it means to truly listen to yourself. What You'll Learn in This Episode:Why traditional healing systems often feel hollow—and how they can reinforce perfectionism and conformity instead of true transformationThe difference between resourcing and dissociating—how Devin used "healthy" practices like breathwork and yoga to silence his body's wisdom instead of listening to itWhy emotions aren't problems to solve—they're messages, evolutionary tools, and pathways to deeper wisdomHow body wisdom gets overridden—the cultural scripts that teach us to distrust our intuition and seek external validationThe philosophy of Lila—an ancient Indian concept that reframes life as "cosmic play" rather than a linear path to fix yourselfWhy you don't need to "win" at healing—and how the idea of becoming a "better version of yourself" can be self-punitiveWhen nervous system collapse is necessary—why sometimes you need to stop doing and just be with what isThe gaslighting embedded in systems—from workplaces to therapy, how we're taught that we are the problem, not the systemKey Themes:This episode explores the paradox of using healing modalities to avoid feeling, the courage it takes to trust your body when logic demands otherwise, and the radical idea that suffering might not be something to transcend—but something to experience fully as part of being human.Devin's honesty about his own recent heartbreak—and how he ignored his body's clear signals because he couldn't rationalize them—offers a powerful reminder that even those who teach this work are still learning it. We're all human. We all stumble. And vulnerability isn't weakness—it's where the real wisdom lives.About Devin Scott:Devin Scott is a body-based coach and facilitator who helps people reconnect with their inner wisdom and move through life with greater authenticity. Dr. Brook Sheehan shares her powerful personal story, including growing up in a conventional medical model, her diagnosis with cerebral palsy, and her journey to becoming a chiropractor. Digestion and cravings can all start in your nervous system. Food decisions made from a stressed, sympathetic nervous system state will lead you to specific foods for your survival. You then struggle to digest those foods, not because there is something “wrong” with the food or your gut, but because your digestion has shut down to prepare you for battle. You can start to see that every food behavior you have is trying to do something FOR you. Your body needs attunement, compassion, and safety, not ridicule, shame, and judgment. Getting to know how your unique body functions and what it needs and when can be an empowering experience. And, there are many lenses that you can get to know your body through. When the focus is always on finding a root cause, it keeps you looking for the next answer and the next answer and the next answer to your food issues. This can keep you stuck in a survival response. This constant searching sends signals of danger to the body that something is wrong, and it has to keep the sympathetic nervous system turned on (where food behaviors intensify). What if there is no root cause to your binge eating or emotional eating or body image concerns or chronic dieting or restricting? This holiday week might have been really hard. Surrounded by family, arguments, familial patterns, working on staying connected, trying to enact different patterns with food, and feeling overwhelmed and dysregulated. And for others, this week may have included huge wins. You noticed yourself regulating your nervous system, staying connected, choosing other options besides food to connect with yourself, and you got to witness just how far you've come in your food recovery. But today, three days after the actual holiday, it may feel like food is even more of a struggle than it was a few days ago. The experience of joy, connection, stress, exhaustion, social pressure, and emotional intensity of the day may be over, but the food is still here.Maybe you had a plan leading up to the holiday. You had your friends on stand by via text, you had your somatic practices you've learned here or in a session, you showed up for yourself, you tried to stay connected, and so now you may feel utterly confused that you got through the holiday just fine, but want to binge on every holiday leftover food you can find. In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat about: Why leftovers can feel like a threatWhat has changed in your nervous system the day after a holidayMaking sense of your urge to binge leftovers How to somatically process the leftover food binge You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/when-holiday-leftovers-feel-like-a-threatI'll be putting out a special New Years' episode next week so if there is anything you'd like me to add to this episode on how to somatically enter the new year without diet promises and exercise rules, respond to this email with any questions you have! In this rich and wide-ranging conversation, Ali sits down with yoga teacher, author, and anatomy educator Rachel Scott to explore what it truly means to live as a body – not just to have one.Beginning with a candid inquiry into modern yoga culture, Rachel gently peels back the layers of Western commodification to reveal yoga's deeper purpose: presence, self-regulation, and intimacy with the living intelligence beneath our habits and conditioning. From there, the dialogue opens into a profound exploration of embodiment as a spiritual practice – one that includes sensation, relationship, desire, stillness, and paradox.Drawing on decades of practice, Rachel shares how yoga, anatomy study, and contemplative stillness have shaped her understanding of consciousness, love, and human connection. Together, Ali and Rachel reflect on mindfulness versus “body-fulness,” nervous-system awareness in dating and relationships, and the wisdom of listening to the body's cues around safety, timing, and consent. The conversation also moves tenderly into themes rarely spoken aloud: fertility, choice, grief, freedom, and the many ways maternal love can be expressed beyond childbirth. Rachel speaks openly about her journey through wanting children, confronting ambivalence, and ultimately trusting the larger intelligence of life – an experience that reshaped her relationships, her work, and her sense of self.Weaving together yoga philosophy, Tantra, anatomy lab awe, and everyday relational practice, this episode is an invitation to slow down, feel more, and honor the mystery of being embodied. A heartfelt exploration of love, presence, and the courage it takes to listen deeply to the body's quiet truths.FOR MORE ALI MEZEY:ALI - WebsiteALI - LinkTreeALI BIO: Ali Mezey is a Body Therapist, Family Constellation Work Facilitator, Sexologist and Media Maker with over 40 years of experience. One of the aspects of food recovery I wished that I had greater guidance around (and had to learn for myself) was discovering how to listen to my body. Even within different food recovery approaches, there are still all of these rules about what to eat to "prove" recovery or what to do to ensure recovery. I've seen more confusion over the years about what will or will not lead toward a decrease in food coping mechanisms because there is still this idea that there is a right way and a wrong way to recover. When embodiment increases, food behaviors can decrease. When you can hear, understand, and interpret your body's feedback, food impulses don't have to feel so scary to experience anymore because you get what your body is trying to relay. It was the practice of yoga that taught me how to get into my body. In this week's episode, I chat with Jeanie Manchester, founder of Anjaneya Yoga Shala, Master Yoga and Meditation Instructor, about: The impact of doubt on self perceptionBeing guided by your inner voiceHow we are shaped by our life experiencesListening to body wisdomThe connection between lineage and personal identityEmbracing ourselvesAnd so much more! In this episode of Life Check Yourself, I sit down with writer and self-healing advocate Alexis Leigh, author of Pain Is a Portal to Beauty: Stunning Discoveries After Loss, Psychedelics and Feeling It All. With roots in Wharton, law school and the corporate world, she shares how a single moment in the woods cracked open a life that looked "perfect" on paper but felt empty inside, and how following that inner voice led through divorce, deep emotional work and psychedelic journeys into a life of authenticity, love and radical self-trust. About The Guest Alexis Leigh is a writer and advocate for self-healing through unconventional methods, including psychedelics and deep inner work. She left a successful career in finance and consulting, holds a BS in Economics from Wharton and a JD from Lewis and Clark Law School, and now lives between Oregon and Maui with her partner and three boys. Her memoir, Pain Is a Portal to Beauty, explores how feeling deeply, rather than numbing out, can turn grief and loss into clarity, meaning and beauty. 3 Main Takeaways Answer the inner wake-up call instead of settling for a "good enough" life (01:52) Use everyday emotions as portals instead of numbing them away (17:11) Trust body wisdom and courageous tools to turn pain into power and self-leadership (24:26) Main Topics, Timestamps, Explanations & Notable Quotes • Topic 1: When Your Life Looks "Fine" But Feels Like A Tragedy Timestamp: 01:52 – 11:13 What this unlocks: Hearing an inner voice that says, "If you die today, your life will have been a tragedy," forces radical honesty. It challenges the belief that gratitude means tolerating loneliness or emptiness. Letting that truth land can be the moment a person finally gives themselves permission to want more love, more meaning and a different life, even when everything looks "fine" from the outside. From there, every pattern, relationship and identity becomes open to being questioned and redesigned. Notable quotes: "I was walking in the woods in the summer of 2020 and I heard a voice that said, 'If you die today, your life will have been a tragedy.'" "I had all of the categories, but I did want more love and more meaning. I just kind of thought you should not want that." "To hear that your life is a tragedy, it is like everything is not working. That is not like your life needs a little tweaking. That is like throw it in the trash." How this affects someone listening: Letting in the possibility that a "have it all" life can still be tragic breaks the spell of settling. It shows that longing for more is not selfish, it is truthful. Once that truth is acknowledged, a person can stop negotiating with their own sadness and start redesigning their foundation instead of endlessly rearranging the furniture on top of it. • Topic 2: Feeling Feelings Instead Of Numbing – Turning Tiny Triggers Into Portals Timestamp: 17:11 – 23:32 What this unlocks: Painful emotions often get buried under food, wine, screens or busyness. Removing those coping habits, even briefly, can stir up anger, panic or irritation. Those first reactions are not proof that something is wrong; they are the doorway. Meeting them with curiosity instead of judgment turns daily annoyances and "overreactions" into chances to release old grief, anger and fear. Over time, this builds emotional muscle and makes it easier to stay present instead of collapsing into victimhood or self-criticism. Notable quotes: "Our bodies protect us from these feelings when we are not ready to look at them… my body dissociated from feeling, numbed me completely when my mom went away when I was young." "It is not about how can I go from not feeling anything to feeling everything. It is about how can I go from not feeling anything to even recognizing what is a feeling." "As soon as you notice that you are feeling victim, then you can be sweet to the part that is feeling victim… none of it has to ultimately land in judgment." How this affects someone listening: Seeing emotions as parts that need care, rather than flaws that need fixing, rewires the entire healing journey. Small triggers stop being proof that progress is failing and become guidance toward what still needs love. This softens inner criticism, reduces shame and makes deep emotional work sustainable instead of exhausting. • Topic 3: Psychedelics, Body Wisdom and Becoming Bigger Than Outcome Timestamp: 14:59 – 27:10 & 34:32 – 35:37 What this unlocks: When the thinking mind is in charge, decisions get stuck in fear, logic loops and "what ifs." Dropping into body wisdom and, for some, working with medicines like MDMA, psilocybin or ayahuasca can help unpack stored pain that blocks intuition. As layers of grief clear, self-trust grows. Life's events still hurt, but they no longer define identity. A person begins to feel bigger than any outcome and capable of leading themselves, instead of endlessly searching for someone else with the answers. Notable quotes: "My body is so brilliant and my brain tries so hard to be in charge… most of the time my body is like, I know this." "Psychedelics helped me unpack that pain so that then I could access my own wisdom… now I can lead myself in my life in a way that I could not before." "I no longer feel like the world is out to get me… recently I have started doing this thing where it is like, okay, if this thing happens, or if the opposite thing happens, I am the same." "I take every emotion that I feel that does not just kind of pass on its own and I journal with my part." How this affects someone listening: Learning to trust inner guidance over external validation changes how choices are made in love, work and healing. Pain stops being a threat and becomes information. With that shift, risks feel more possible, endings feel less like failure, and it becomes easier to walk toward a bigger, more aligned life without needing guarantees.

We were all taught how to eat and move and exist in our bodies. The “shoulds” that you learn from your parents, diet/wellness/fitness culture, magazines, media, movies, family and friends can keep your nervous system stuck in a sympathetic response. When you live in chronic stress or survival states, your system prioritizes safety over sensation. That means you may default to habits that feel familiar and not ones that feel nourishing. You may be engaging in “healthy” acts and feel absolutely horrible because they are not what your body may resonate with or need.Yet, let's normalize that following rigid food or exercise rules can feel stabilizing. This is because they reduce uncertainty. Safety can then get connected to the felt sense of rigidity, where all other feedback from your body about what it needs for flow, play, and long term safety gets drowned out.Exploring what would feel best to you and your present day body can be a journey into self leadership. In this week's episode, I chat with Courtney Townley, health and self-leadership coach, speaker, host of the top-rated Grace & Grit podcast, and author about: Her 4-part Consistency Code frameworkSelf leadershipThe misconceptions of self care and wellnessThe impact of societal expectations on womenNavigating stressPractical steps toward self leadershipYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: www.stephaniemara.com/blog/revolutionize-your-health8 days left to get 30% off my Somatic Eating® Intensive! I remember the very slow realization as I started to embody my binges that food was never going to give me what I was looking for. It felt crushing to face. I'd been utilizing food as a way to try to help myself feel better, safer, more grounded and I felt so much grief that this strategy was never going to work.Over the years in private practice, I noticed almost every single person I worked with experience this moment of deep grief. I now have a term for this called Food Grief. Food recovery is a process of saying goodbye to strategies that worked as a child and no longer work now as an adult.Grieving any food coping mechanism is feeling the body unlearning an old survival pattern. Food Grief is your body reorienting to the present and that you no longer need to protect yourself like you did in the past.In this week's episode, I chat with Syanna Wand, Certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and founder of Interpersonal Embodied Healing about: Understanding grief in healingThe somatic concept of armoringNavigating grief and reliefThe importance of resourcing yourselfBuilding capacity to be with your emotionsGenerational griefEmbracing grief and creating a relationship with itYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/grief-is-crucial-for-trauma-recoveryReminder that my Somatic Eating® Intensive is on sale for 30% off until Tuesday, December 2nd. WelcomeHello, Lovelies. It is Juliette here, and today I am joined by the luminous Dr Deb Barnett. Dr Deb's journey is one of devotion, inner rebuilding, and feminine truth. From decades inside clinical psychology to redefining how women meet love, she discovered that safety in the body, self intimacy, and fullness are what make a woman truly magnetic. In this conversation, we move through the territory of feminine sovereignty, nervous system safety, dating without hunger, and the art of receiving without shrinking. We explore softness as strength, self touch and joy as nourishment, and the power of choosing yourself first so love can rise to meet you.Episode Summary In this episode, Dr Deb and I walk through her profound journey into feminine sovereignty and self intimacy. From decades in clinical psychology to realising that women do not simply need mindset work but nervous system safety, body presence, and self nourishment, she shares how true magnetism begins within. We speak about dating without hunger, the courage to soften without losing power, and how a woman becomes irresistible when she stops performing and starts receiving. Dr Deb also opens up about her work supporting women to cultivate fullness, joy, and emotional safety, helping them not just look confident but live as women who are already chosen by themselves first, and how she continues to guide through embodiment, tenderness, and truth.Key Takeaways A Woman Filled FirstWhen you are sourced from within, you are not reaching. You are not grasping. You are already full. Love becomes a choice, not a lifeline.Safety Creates DesireThe nervous system sets the tone. When your body feels held, you soften. You trust. You meet intimacy without bracing.Self Intimacy Is the BeginningBefore you open to someone else, you learn to open to yourself. This week I'm getting honest about the messy middle: the place where body wisdom and mindset stories crash into each other. From returning to studio yoga after a 30-year hiatus (hello, vulnerability) to walking on pre-shift days and lifting with a trainer, I explore how fear, ego, and perfectionism can masquerade as “listening to my body.” I unpack the “chimp brain” vs. true body cues, why validation and avoidance both pull us off-center, and how I'm practicing a kinder, clearer check-in before I move. If you're learning to balance challenge with care — and effort with ease — this one's for you.In this episode:A pivotal yoga memory that shaped how I felt in my body — and why I avoided studios for yearsJoining a 6-week yoga “invitation,” taking modifications without shame, and then catching ego on the mat the very next classWalking on workdays: when “take it easy” is care… and when it's fear of discomfort talkingStrength training with a trainer: trusting coaching cues, distinguishing pain from effort, and letting go of past-me PRsThe “chimp brain” vs. body wisdom: loud/urgent/emotional signals versus quiet/consistent cuesFour reflection questions to discern mindset noise from body truth:Is this coming from care or from fear?Am I trying to prove something or connect? What does safety feel like in my body right now?If I fully trusted my body, what would I choose?Redefining success in movement: alignment over metrics (effort and ease can coexist)Rest as nourishment: part of the rhythm, not a failure or a pause you have to “earn”Try this before you move:Ask yourself: What energy do I have today? What would feel supportive? What would feel satisfying? How can I honor both effort and ease?If this episode resonated, share it with a friend who's learning to listen to her body, too. Have you ever ignored what your body was trying to tell you — until it forced you to listen? In this episode from Bali, I share the unexpected moment that stopped me in my tracks — and what it revealed about the connection between our pace, our emotions, and the wisdom of the body. It's not a story about pain — it's about awareness, intuition, and learning to trust the messages we'd rather avoid. If you've been feeling tired, tense, or like the universe keeps sending you signs to slow down, this might be the reminder you didn't know you needed. If this resonates — or you've ever ignored your own body's messages — I hope this encourages you to slow down and tune in. Please share it or leave a comment if it strikes a chord.
