Ida Rolf in Her Own Words: Lecture & Demo at Esalen (1967 Recording)

Voices of Esalen

Today, we're opening the vaults to share a rare and remarkable recording from Esalen's rich historical archive: a 1967 lecture and live demonstration by none other than Dr. Ida Rolf, the pioneering founder of Structural Integration—more commonly known today as Rolfing. But what is Rolfing? Often described as intense (and sometimes even painful), Rolfing is a powerful form of bodywork that focuses on the manipulation and realignment of connective tissue—fascia—to promote structural balance and physical freedom. Ida Rolf believed that by methodically reorganizing the body's structure in gravity, not only could chronic pain and postural issues be resolved, but profound emotional and psychological healing could also occur. This archival gem features Dr. Rolf in her element—lecturing with intellectual precision, delivering her insights with wit and candor, and guiding a live demo with such vivid specificity that, even without visuals, you feel transported into the room beside her. It's a masterclass in both bodywork and presence. A little backstory: Ida Rolf first came to Esalen in the 1960s at the invitation of famed Gestalt therapist Fritz Perls, who would become one of her earliest champions. According to The Upstart Spring, Rolf worked on Perls daily for a week. On the seventh day, during a neck session, he passed out—briefly. When he came to, he recounted a deeply buried trauma: a therapist twisting his neck under anesthesia decades earlier. The memory, and its accompanying tension, had haunted him for years. He credited Rolf's work with helping to release it. After that, Perls became an ardent supporter of Rolfing, and Ida returned to Esalen again and again. Esalen Institute would become the West Coast hub for her method, just as it had for Gestalt therapy. This episode is a rare opportunity to hear Dr. Rolf in her own voice, offering not just a window into the origins of Rolfing, but a taste of the charisma, intellect, and force of will that helped her change the way we think about the body, healing, and human potential.

As we get older many of us experience joint pain and muscle pain. We think it is just our old joints but it might very well be dry fascia. In this episode I talk to Sophia Breust who is a structural integration practitioner about the many benefits of working with fascia.Sophia has an interesting story and her own health and wellbeing today is a direct reflection of the benefits of structural integration. After going through some relational trauma in 2014, Sophia was diagnosed with PTSD. Experiencing symptoms from extreme anxiety, recurring nightmares, and shakes to lethargy, Sophia explored talk therapy to help resolve what she thought was a problem in her mind. Over 2 years, she showed up religiously to her psychology sessions, but she felt she wasn't getting anywhere. After years of looking for answers and feeling totally helpless, Sophia found Structural Integration & Myofascial Bodywork (MFB) and realised how disconnected she was from her physical body. This was the missing link for her; the problem wasn't just in her mind, it was in her body! Trauma is stored in the body, and if we become disconnected from the sensations that are going on in our physical body, our mind won't get a chance to be at ease. After many years of healing, processing, feeling, and deeply connecting to her body, Sophia now helps many people make sense of their physical pain and what may be going on for them emotionally. She calls this Emotional Anatomy. While a free and open fascial system creates a more balanced emotional state, Sophia has seen the impact of MFB on excellent recovery, lymph & blood flow, and injury prevention. MFB, according to Sophia and many of her clients, is truly life-changing!In this episode we talk about all things fascia, the bodymind connection, healing trauma and a bit about ageing bodies. In today's conversation I am joined again by Ryan Hofer and Paul Wirth for a second round of a triad of introspection. We discuss and contemplate writings of the Osteopath Jim Jealous, the need for improved listening skills training, we also explored different pedagogical approaches, the role of the autonomic nervous system in manual therapy, and the concept of structural integration. We go into some really fun and exploratory spaces and I greatly enjoy being in conversation with these two. A note, this talk came at the end of a busy day for me and some of my cortical channels were not as up to snuff as they could have been. I lost my train of thought a few times and thankfully Paul and Ryan were right there with me to pick them up, expand or contrast them and continue the conversation forward. ‌ Ryan Hofer is fascinated by applications of body-based systems thinking and hands-on therapies. He graduated from the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute and was the chair of a Structural Integration certification exam program. He has completed a Masters of Teaching and a Masters of Communication, and he is currently pursuing a doctorate in naturopathic medicine. Paul Wirth is a bodyworker and movement educator, a Certified Advanced Rolfer® and a student and teacher of Tai Chi Ch'uan. His practice integrates Structural Integration, craniosacral therapy, visceral manipulation, and various kinds of movement work. A guiding question for Paul is: “How does a person's innate capacity for healing make use of my presence and input, and what about that is up to me?” He endeavors to continually be surprised by the reality that each person he works with is a living, present being, and to undertake practices that remind him that he is, too. Today's conversation marks a departure from our usual format. Today I am joined by Ryan Hofer and Paul Wirth. In mid 2023, Ryan organized a discussion among a small group of us on the topic of embodiment—a conversation I found particularly enriching, especially as it introduced me to Paul for the first time. The depth and content of that conversation seemed too valuable not to share on the podcast. The original call included four or five participants, which, while enjoyable, might not translate as well in an audio format for our listeners. A trio, however, makes for a more accessible listening experience. Paul, Ryan, and I share several overlapping interests, creating rich intersections of dialogue where two can engage deeply while the other listens in. My hope is to turn this into a semi-regular series with both of them, discussing various topics as they arise and providing value to our community. This episode is the first realization of that vision. Ryan Hofer is fascinated by applications of body-based systems thinking and hands-on therapies. He graduated from the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute and was the chair of a Structural Integration certification exam program. He has completed a Masters of Teaching and a Masters of Communication, and he is currently pursuing a doctorate in naturopathic medicine. In today's episode, join us on a journey with host Alex Greene as he shares his experiences and insights into somatic trauma work. Alex's fascination with trauma work began during his study of Structural Integration Bodywork, where he discovered the potential of using the body as a gateway to address psycho-emotional history and trauma. Through deep tissue approaches, he not only improved musculoskeletal alignment but also facilitated emotional release and self-awareness. Delving further, Alex explored trauma from a neurobiological perspective during the "neurobiological revolution." Groundbreaking theories such as the Polyvagal Theory and the works of Peter Levine and Dr. David Berceli provided new insights into the role of the nervous system in trauma. This led Alex to discover the transformative potential of neurogenic tremors and the therapeutic technique of TRE (Tension/Trauma Releasing Exercises). In his practice, Alex integrates various modalities to offer a holistic approach to trauma therapy. Zen Integration Bodywork and Somatic Coaching combine hands-on bodywork techniques like Structural Integration, Myofascial Release, and Zero Balancing with non-hands-on approaches such as Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems, and Dynamic Attachment Repatterning Experience (DARe). Through this synthesis, Alex aims to support individuals in their healing journey, promoting healing, release of tension, regulation of the nervous system, and fostering secure attachments and resilience. Drawing from his Zen practice and trauma education, Alex integrates mindfulness, presence, and non-judgment into his therapeutic approach, allowing clients to deepen their connection with their inner selves, develop self-awareness, and tap into their innate wisdom and resilience. Interview begins @ 3:53 In this enlightening episode of The Sacred Speaks, host Dr. John Price converses with Dr. Rachel Harris, who shares insights from her latest book, "Swimming in the Sacred: Wisdom from the Psychedelic Underground". Dr. Harris illuminates her interview process with 15 veteran female guides from the psychedelic underground, revealing their enduring commitment to the spiritual over the medicalized use of these compounds. The discussion delves into the reasons these guides remain in the underground despite societal changes and legalization, attributing it to their belief in the greater spiritual and religious value of psychedelics. The disparity between psychotherapy and the spiritually-oriented approach these guides embody is examined, with Dr. Harris emphasizing that the spiritual process stands alone, independent yet not exclusive of therapy. The conversation explores the ontology of the visionary or “unseen others”, often present in psychedelic experiences, the transformative power of psychedelics, the voices of doubly silenced women, the unique bond women share with these medicines, and the relevance of cultural frameworks for the sacred. They also touch on the importance of selecting an ethical guide, concerns about the healer's ethical wellbeing, and the profound link between death and the psychedelic experience, and the importance and nature of integration for psychedelic process. Bio: Dr. Rachel Harris is a respected psychologist, prolific author, and eminent figure in the realm of psychospiritual development. She spent thirty-five years in private practice, focusing on individuals seeking psychospiritual growth. Rachel has an impressive research career, having received a National Institutes of Health New Investigator's Award and publishing over forty scientific studies in peer-reviewed journals. She has also shared her expertise with Fortune 500 companies. Rachel participated in the 1968 Esalen Residential Program, an intensive six-month meditation and bodywork course. She also studied Structural Awareness, a movement system founded on Dr. Ida Rolf's Structural Integration. This awareness of body consciousness deeply influences her psychotherapeutic approach. In the mid-1980s to early 2000s, Rachel facilitated workshops at esteemed institutions like Omega Institute, NY, and Esalen Institute, CA. She is the author of "Twenty Minute Retreats," which details the exercises she taught in her workshops. A serendipitous encounter with ayahuasca in Costa Rica in 2005 sparked Rachel's interest in the therapeutic potential of this medicine. This led to a three-year research project, culminating in "A Study of Ayahuasca Use in North America," and her influential book "Listening to Ayahuasca: New Hope for Depression, Addiction, PTSD, and Anxiety." We are all in a constant search for growth and included in that is the overall condition of our physique. In this episode of I Love Me Love Podcast, Gail was able to have a great conversation with Ivette Pinela, an Advanced Practitioner of Structural Integration and a Rolfing expert.  Ivette fell from an accident at a restaurant where she was working at that time.  She was advised that she would not be able to stand or sit for more than 20 minutes, but she was not ready to accept that at 23.  She got introduced into the Rolf Method and although it was rough at first, in less than six sessions her body was healed.  Today she continues to help people in more ways than they can imagine to be pain-free.   Highlights of the episode … - Why did Ivette Pinela do a lot of traveling? - What is access consciousness - What are Access Bars?  - How is Rolfing different from massage - How many sessions does the process of structural integration take and why is it important to take all the sessions? - What is the proper way of breathing - Is Rolfing going to be good as preventative medicine?  - What will Ivette offer as one ingredient for that cocktail on Self-love?
