Welcome to the sixth episode of this special short season of The Pilates Diaries Podcast created to support and promote the rebuilding of the business of industry colleague and long term Pilates teacher, Kimberley Garlick. Kimberley's studio business, Northern Rivers Pilates in Lismore was completely submerged in the devastating floods that tore through the region in February and March earlier this year. In pursuit of getting their business back on its feet, Kimberley has reached out to her extensive industry network and along with studio manager and daughter, Madison have created the Teach to Preach Retreat that will run at their studio in Lismore, November 4th to 6th this year.On this episode Kimberley welcomes Daniel Dittmar. Daniel began teaching Pilates back in 1998 while completing his applied science degree in Human Movement at QUT and since 2007 has been teaching courses throughout Asia for Polestar Pilates as one of their senior educators. Daniel loves incorporating elements from different forms of movement training across Exercise Physiology, Franklin Method, Anatomy Trains, Animal Flow, and was the pioneer "Runity" master trainer in Asia. He's the owner and head instructor of two integrated movement and Physiotherapy clinics- Focus Movement Singapore and Focus Physio in Niseko Japan. Daniel's presentations at the Northern Rivers Pilates Teach to Preach Retreat in November this year are firstly a lecture called 'Unravel the Thoracic' and will focus on improving movement of the thoracic spine as arguably one of the most important parts of the body to focus on as a practitioner. And secondly, a workshop on the Animal Flow movement system exploring multi-joint and multi-planar movements that will help the flow and integration of the principles of Pilates as well as challenge the so-called traditional concepts of joint stability. Do Less, Be More – Exploring Franklin Method and Alexander Technique   – The MOVEMENT Movement with Steven Sashen Episode 126 with Greg Dyke   Greg Dyke is a software engineer, a former researcher in the learning sciences, and occasional partner dance teacher. He gave up downhill ski racing after leaving university and has not been running or gone to the gym since. He somehow found his way into partner dancing (Blues, Lindy Hop, Tango, Bal folk) and settled down into a sedentary lifestyle with occasional movement to music. Encounters with great teachers, Franklin Method and Alexander Technique transformed him from an ungraceful, nerdy dancer into someone who wears barefoot shoes, geeks out about somatic modalities, and is about to start training in Alexander Technique. Ten years later, he's still nerdy, but more graceful - and people seem to really enjoy dancing with him.   Listen to this episode of The MOVEMENT Movement with Greg Dyke about the Franklin Method and the Alexander Technique.   Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week's show: - Why people should find the movements that their body knows how to do. - How the images you hold about your body are going to mirror what you do with your body. - How turning your head from side to side shortens your spine and creates tension. - Why people must expand their movement vocabulary by bringing awareness to their movements. - How people should find a way to use less effort and relax more. Eva is a person who lives her passion with her husband, their Icelandic horses, their three dogs and one cat in a small village in the North of Netherlands. As a physiotherapist and instructor she has always been looking for some way to put feeling (during riding) into words, and to also to educate people about how their bodies work. Through the training of the Franklin Method Equestrian she has received new, very applicable insights and information. In recent years she has done various courses on sports psychology, which provides a nice total package to guide riders and horses. Physiotherapist for both Horses and Humans Eva explains that is about looking at both the biomechanics of the horse and the rider to see if the goal of the rider is fair for the horse as well, because when you look at the biomechanics of some horses, like in Belgium, they've got really massive horses and they won't be show jumpers. You have to also talk to the rider, help them understand the architecture of their horse and the horse's capabilities. The Franklin Method With practice of the Franklin Method, equestrians become more aware of not only their own movement, but also the movement of their horse. Consequently, the connection between horse and rider becomes more clear and precise. For Eva, Eric Franklin has taught her how to use her body, and what she really likes is the way he also uses metaphors and imagery. It has become the way that she works with riders. The Art of Letting Go Christine and Eva get into more detail about the relationship between the rider and the horse. Eva shares that the pelvis is probably the biggest factor when it comes to that relationship. The pelvis is the main body part where we communicate because we sit on it, and the pelvic floor is such a big muscle. Eva readily speaks to her riders about the Art of Letting Go. “I think we are hanging on to quite a lot of things, both physically and mentally. I have moments that I'm hanging onto things, or and clinging on to things and I want to grab it and I want to hold it. Then I thought, ``Well, what does it bring? '' I only can change it when I notice, and what I don't notice, I can't change.” Establishing good Movement with your Horse It is important to have a good mind-set around movement with the horses, as it can really impact the quality of movement with your horse. Eva explains that being in the present is one of the most valuable, and needed skills while you're working with animals, especially when you're working with horses. They really mirror what we do, because it's also their nature. “When my heartbeat is high, I need to use my mental capacity to lower my heartbeat. I need to first notice that my heartbeat is high, and then I need to train myself what kind of tricks I have, or what kind of capacity I have to lower my heartbeat down. The check in is really, really important.” Teaching People how to Check-in When Eva works with her riders, she has them check in with themselves. “I just asked them: what does it feel like? Where do you feel something? I actually try to do it every time we change a gait. So when we go from walk to trot, I often ask them as well. Do a check in to notice your body. Notice what feels good. Notice what doesn't feel as flexible as you would like to have it? Give me feedback when you notice something.” Listeners can find Eva on Instagram.

Try this: Google “Lafayette dance studio.” You'll find 20 listings in Lafayette. For comparison, there are 12 McDonald's.  Dance is a pretty big industry here. The operators even have political clout. The Heymann Center was shut down briefly during the pandemic until the dance community raised hell. But most of those studios are for young people. And dance, or any type of movement, is a lifetime pursuit.  There's comparatively fewer opportunities for adults to age into a life with motion, especially if you're not looking to two-step. For professional dancers, opportunities can be hard to come by, unless you want to open a dance studio and teach.  Clare Cook is founder of the nonprofit arts center Basin Arts, the only professional dance company in Lafayette. And she's used Basin as a venue for artists of a variety of disciplines to show their work.  Clare is a Lafayette native, but got her MFA at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. She still teaches and choreographs across the country and abroad.   Now, let's talk about dance as exercise. Exercise crazes like Zumba or Barre3 are rooted in the physical discipline and exertion of dancing. But it can go much deeper than toning core muscles.  Disciplines like the Franklin Method or Pilates emphasize a mind-body connection in the practice and aim for something much more holistic than physical fitness. Alyce Morgan has taught Pilates at her studio Embody Zest for over 20 years and is now a certified Franklin Method instructor.  That approach uses imagery and movement and what they call “experiential anatomy” to reorient your mind, body and posture.  Alyce makes her work approachable. You can take an “Old Tight Guy Pilates” class and she often takes her instruction out of the studio and into the world with public classes in local parks. Out to Lunch Acadiana is recorded live over lunch at Tula Tacos and Amigos in downtown Lafayette. You can find photos from this show by Astor Morgan at our website itsacadiana.com. Not to mention her brand new podcast of the same name. During COVID-19, she began a Move Better Feel Better campaign directly supporting women's mental health. After graduating from the exercise sciences Master's program at the University of Toronto, she went on to study Pilates, the Franklin Method® and the Oov, in an effort to help people find the freedom that a fit and healthy body and mind will provide. In this episode: The Double Shift. Working and mothering can prove to be difficult, especially when it seems like the work never ends. Christina talks about her double shift as a businesswoman and a mother. Healthier Habits. Change needs to be made in moderation, you can't climb Mt Everest without learning how to hike. Along with Christina's day job, she has the second shift of looking after her children, which can serve to be challenging as it appears to be a never ending loop of working and mothering. Despite this, she describes her home life as “the perfect chaos”, with a mix of work and interruptions. She also took her eldest daughter's advice of being more present, as it is easy to be buried in work. So, Christina vowed to spend less time with distractions (such as her phone) and to be fully engaged while she's in her mothering shift. MOVEMENT The farm that Christina lives on is fairly big, so movement is a huge part of her life. She likes to stay active because it helps serve as a distraction for the things that spike her anxiety. Christina also teaches pilates, though she has to make sure her kids are watching TV otherwise she feels like she can't do her movement. She mentions that she hires her children to babysit her youngest on the nights she teaches pilates, which is a great opportunity for her children to learn responsibility. Christina also says that she tries to move with the kids. It could be simply moving around the farm or throwing a dance party, but she wants movement to be a part of their lives. HEALTHIER HABITS Christina reminds us to be realistic whilst making and considering changes in our lives. She also says that we should start small and in moderation, then as we get more comfortable with completing our goals, we can start on the bigger, more daunting ones. You can't climb Mt Everest without learning to hike. The mindset behind this is the feeling of accomplishment growing with each task you complete, it also helps us build skills we may not know we would need for our bigger goals. Christina gives us the important message that, if you want to change, you have to work for it. METHODS OF CHANGE To start working towards your goal, you must first do a visual sweep of your life. If you want healthier habits, think about anything you want to change about your wellness, diet, or movement. Once you've completed your visual sweep,

Kearsten Lyon (she/her) is the founder and owner of an extended health care clinic called Total Movement Therapy based in Toronto, ON and sees clients virtually all over the world. Kearsten has been working and teaching within the Pilates and Rehabilitation Therapy industry since 2011.  She utilizes a unique blend of Pilates, The Oov, Franklin Method, Movement for Trauma, traditional strength and conditioning exercises, client education and client–directed tissue release work in each session with her clients. In working with her I have learned so much about the human body, my own movement patterns and most especially I've had my eyes opened to some of my movement blindspots and biases. It's been incredible, for me personally and for my teaching!  In this episode you'll hear: what is important for teachers to think about when they're integrating ideas from different movement frameworks all about Whole Body Cueing and how can yoga teachers incorporate that into their teaching a deep dive into fascial slings and why they are important to think about when cueing movement a conversation about uncovering some of my own unconscious  movement biases  a little bit about the biopsychosocial model and how can we incorporate that into our yoga teaching

This is a big episode talking about big issues. I had the pleasure of chatting with Christina Whelan Chabot from Matters of Movement. Christina teaches holistic movement instruction using the principles of Pilates and the Franklin Method™. She believes that, "Movement is not just exercise, it is influenced by science, the arts, history, societal norms and expectations, health and diet, socio-economic status, emotional and mental health and finally circumstance (pregnancy, age, career, parenthood). Knowing this, she takes into account the individual needs of every person and considers the person, as a whole of many parts." My guest today is Tracy Belcher, the founder and managing editor of the popular Pilates blog and brand, Pilatay. Tracy is a classical Pilates instructor, Franklin Method teacher and former marketing and communications professional. And though Tracy is completely obsessed with classical Pilates, she says it has a public relations problem - actually two. Problem #1 - An awareness issue: People do not understand what classical Pilates is and what makes it different from its contemporary sister. Problem #2 - An image issue: There is a perception of elitism and exclusivity. As Tracy explains, “This generation of Pilates teachers and students don’t care about past drama, it’s a turn off. We just want to learn the work.”

Christina is a contributing author in the upcoming You've Got This, Healthy Mama book. She studied at the University of Toronto and received a Masters in Exercise Sciences, with a focus on exercise and the nervous system. She is also a certified Pilates and Franklin Method educator, who balances this with motherhood (to three) and the help she provides at the family business. Her ultimate goal is to promote healthy living, teach body awareness and help people achieve the flexibility that a fit and healthy body and mind will give them. In 2017, she founded her own business called Matters of Movement, which is a Pilates-based movement practice. After trying to balance motherhood and the schedules of other studios, Christina was inspired to start her own studio that would be flexible to her needs as a mother. Her passion for movement and helping people become more connected with their bodies and physical selves Christina decided to name her business Matters of Movement. Movement from the perspective that it is affected by our nutrition, our mental state, our socioeconomic status, and societal expectations. The expectations we set on our relationship with movement can be the hurdle that prevents a regular relationship with moving. Through a set of 10-minute workouts, Christina helps to lower the barriers to movement. Christina set out a 10min workout challenge through her network that led to countless other positive changes in their lives, from increased water consumption to more mindful eating and a healthier mental state. When there are multiple barriers to gaining movement in motherhood, it can be even harder to overcome high expectations. One way Christina suggests you incorporate movement into your day is to commit to 2-5 minutes of some physical exercise, like a plank in the living room, or squats in the middle of the kitchen. The best part of including this daily habit is that your kids will begin to notice you. They will see your commitment to exercise and taking care of your body and begin to join in and develop those healthy habits on their own. Before you know it, you can build in 20 minutes of exercise without much hassle. We also want to change the conversation about exercise in general. A lot of focus is on weight loss, or muscle tone or figure-shaping, and while that may be a piece of it, the other benefits are important to keep in mind, too. You will sleep better, your mood will be lighter, and you will be more in tune with your body's food needs. Christina aims to get you fit to live the life you want to live. When your physical self restricts your ability to live how would make you happy, she wants to help. Regular movement can also improve your healing from any traumatic injuries that can impact your daily habits. It can be a challenge to balance the invisible workload of motherhood. Christina suggests getting a partner, if available, involved in helping create space for movement. She also suggests you find an activity that you enjoy and want to do, whatever it may be. Dance classes, group classes, nature walks or whatever speaks to you personally and you look forward to doing. Being outside in nature is refreshing in itself, surrounded by the earth and air, wind in the leaves on the trees, and pairing that with movement is an incredible tool to engage your senses and your body and bring your mindset into the present. Self-care is often the first big challenge for moms. Christina has a retreat she is running September 29th. When Christina started seeing negative views in herself regarding self-care posts on social media and recognized it as a need for her to take a time out and take care of herself.  After a childless vacation, she felt invigorated, calmer and more centered with herself and better able to take care of her kids. Getting space away from the kids and space to reconnect with yourself is the...
