Send us a textWhen I was going through the certification program with Romana Kryzanowska in 1994, she told us that the Reformer workout always began with Footwork because Joe, while developing his method, created Footwork to help straighten his bowed legs. But he had other ideas as to how Footwork would be beneficial for the body. As we know, he was interested in the body's full transformation and the Chinese Healing Arts came into play. It's reported that Joe's intention of infusing reflexology into the Footwork exercises meant that by massaging the various points in the feet, the internal organs would be stimulated. Additionally, Romana's view of Footwork was that we could find it throughout the system, no matter which apparatus. Joining me today is my friend and colleague, Susannah Cotrone, co-owner of Cotrone Pilates in Los Angeles who has her own take on the power of Footwork.About Darien Gold ~ https://www.dariengold.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/darien_gold_pilates_expertFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dariengoldMusic credits ~ Instagram: @theotherjohnmayer About Susannah Cotrone ~ https://cotronefitness.com/Support the show

Send us a Text Message. In the 1980's, Elena Bartley our guest today was a company member of Dance Theater of Harlem, the most prestigious black ballet dance company in the world. As fortune would have it, Elena learned about the Contrology System AKA Pilates, from the company's executive director, Kathy Grant who was as many of you know, a disciple of Joe Pilates. After spending two decades as one of the company's soloists, Elena transitioned to teaching Pilates and brought with her a dancer's eye for detail and a passion for movement. She also studied with other first generation teachers, Ron Fletcher, Eve Gentry, Jay Grimes and Romana Kryzanowska who all informed Elena's teaching.About Darien Gold ~ https://www.dariengold.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/darien_gold_pilates_expertFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dariengoldMusic credits ~ Instagram: @theotherjohnmayer About Elena Bartley ~ https://tupilates.videoSupport the Show.
Eric Carlovich. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/elpodcastdepilates4k/message
Mariano Dolagaray. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/elpodcastdepilates4k/message

Dr. Jay and Brad had the honor of interviewing Karen Garcia, former professional ballet dancer and founder of Studio Body Logic® Authentic Pilates Studios. Karen Garcia spent ten years as a professional ballet dancer with the Dallas, Washington, Fort Worth, and Milwaukee Ballet Companies. These ballet companies performed works from most of the great neoclassical and classical choreographers of our time and classical repertory such as Swan Lake, Giselle, Cinderella, and Coppelia. A career-ending knee injury and subsequent Pilates-assisted recovery compelled her to devote her time to introducing others to Pilates. Trained and certified in 1996 under Manhattan-based Romana Kryzanowska, a Joseph Pilates protégé, Karen Garcia is one of a handful of second-generation Pilates instructors in the world. Karen Garcia founded Studio Body Logic® Authentic Pilates Studios, which have earned significant recognition from local, statewide, and national news media as reputable teaching centers. There are two locations serving over 300 students with multiple instructors, apprentices, and office staff members. Karen Garcia has taught Pilates for corporations, dance and Pilates conventions, and destination spas. Karen Garcia has also created several nationally best-selling and critically acclaimed Pilates fitness DVDs.

The Pilates Method Alliance had its beginnings in 2001. Kevin Bowen and Colleen Glenn, both Pilates teachers, shared a mutual interest in preserving Joe's Method. So they invited Pilates teachers, including the First Generation - Ron Fletcher, Mary Bowen, Kathy Grant, Lolita San Miguel and even Romana Kryzanowska, though she didn't attend. Also, equipment company owners, Ken Endelman and Moria Stott. They all met in Miami, Florida to form an organization and they set out to create a curriculum that would be the industry's standard for certifying potential Pilates teachers. The PMA has had its ups and downs but has managed to survive for these last two decades. Enter Carla Harris. Hired in 2021 to step into the executive director role, Carla is determined to take the PMA in another direction that is more reflective of today's Pilates community. For more information about the Pilates Method Alliance: https://pilatesmethodalliance.orgFor more information about Darien Gold: https://www.dariengold.comTheme music - Soul Blues Piano Shuffle by Boom Zoom
My guest today is Roberta Gratz, co-owner of Gratz Industries and wife of the late Donald Gratz, whose father Frank along with a business partner opened a custom metal fabrication business Treitel/Gratz in New York City in the 1920's. When Mr. Tretial moved on, Frank renamed the business Gratz Industries, Inc. and continued to fabricate sculptures, metal furniture and produce industrial design prototypes for many of the worlds top designers. Donald, Frank's younger son joined his father after finishing college and a stint in the Army. At one point in the mid 1960's one aspect of their metal furniture business began to slow down leaving room for a unique but untested type of business. On a serendipitous afternoon in 1968, Donald while delivering a metal furniture piece to one of his customers met Romana Kryzanowska at his customer's home. Romana had needed a manufacturer for her apparatus as more and more teachers were arriving at her studio eager to learn Pilates from her and then needing apparatus to work on at home. It was this fortuitous meeting with Romana that opened a new line of business for Gratz Industries, located at that time in Long Island City, Queens - it was the birth of classical Pilates apparatus. Jennifer DeLuca, owner of BodyTonic Pilates Gymnasium in Brooklyn, NY. Jennifer began her Pilates life in 1985 at the esteemed High School for the Performing Arts in New York City. Part of the curriculum was a semester of the Pilates Mat under the tutelage of Nancy Butler. Not exactly wowed by Pilates, Jennifer couldn't have anticipated how her love of dance and movement would intersect with the Pilates method. Joe Pilates said, "A healthy body is your birthright,” but his quote would be tested when Jennifer discovered a lump in her breast and was diagnosed with breast cancer in July of 2020. Learning she had the BRCA gene, Jennifer made the hard decision to have a double mastectomy. So began her journey of isolation, surgeries and chemotherapy. She credits the support of her staff, clients and her own Pilates practice for helping her return to health.Today, Jennifer has no known cancer and she and her business, BodyTonic are thriving. For those who are dealing with any kind of health issue, you may find this interview very inspiring. To most in the Pilates industry, Kathi Ross-Nash is an indisputable expert of Romana's lineage. Although it is true that Romana Kryzanowska was Kathi's first Pilates teacher over 40 years ago and that she studied and worked with Romana for two decades, Kathi's influence in the Pilates world is much greater. Her dedication to the work is admirable. She is, just to name a few, the creator of the Red Thread Method and the Pilates app KRN Pilates in collaboration with Balanced Body, the author of the Red Thread book series and The Little White Mat book. A mentor to many, she embraced learning from several first generation teacher and more recently completed Lolita San Miguel PMMP program. The list of her accomplishments is extensive and not just in Pilates and her passion for the Pilates Method and a deep desire to keep the legacy alive is palpable.Speaking with Kathi Ross Nash from the U.S. this interview was conducted by PAA committee member Eve Fairbairn. The PAA strives to continue promoting the expansion of the Pilates Method as a professional and valued healthcare and fitness discipline. The goal of the PAA podcast is to explore the many facets and layers of the Pilates industry through conversations with the community.Show Links:PAA standardsPAA websitePAA Facebook PagePAA Member Forum

You know, maybe there is something to this idea of six degrees of separation. My guest today, Roberta Kirschenbaum and I and Joe Pilates walked the same streets in New York City and actually, climbed the same stairs in the now famed building, 939 8th Avenue. Without being aware of each other, Roberta and I both took dance classes on the second floor at Clark Center not knowing that on the same floor Joe Pilates once had his first and only Contrology gym.It was during a ballet class in 1984, when Roberta first heard about Carola Trier, one of Joe Pilates disciples. Roberta had injured her back and the studio manager suggested she go see Carola. At that time, Roberta couldn't afford Pilates classes and was able to heal herself, but the buzz around the Pilates method intrigued her and eventually she began studying with Carola. Roberta's story gets much more interesting! In 2005 she returned to 939 8th Avenue not as a dancer but as a Pilates studio owner, and incredibly for the last sixteen years has taught the Contrology system in Joe's original space. I'm very excited to have Roberta here to put a cap on Season Three and to hear how she's helping to keep Joe's method alive. The mission of this podcast is to share the stories of the impact of Pilates to help you live and move with more joy, physical vitality, and renewed vigor.Pilates was a somewhat unknown word until it started creeping into conversation somewhere around the 2000s- maybe even before then depending on who you asked and amongst which circles, and has largely remained and enigma for many reasons- one of which perhaps is that Pilates really has to be experienced to be understood. There are now a wide range of Pilates styles available when you attend a Pilates class, perhaps borne from the variation of interpretations of how Pilates was originally taught by its founder, Joseph Pilates. With The Pilates Diaries Podcast we're inviting Pilates enthusiasts around the globe to share with us what they've noted down in their Pilates Diary. Our hope is that the Pilates Diaries Podcast goes some way to answering the question " What is it that makes Pilates so special?"We'll take a privileged peek into the Pilates Diaries of our guests to gain a greater insight into the impact Pilates can have in all of our lives and contribute to the health and wellbeing of the community at large.I welcome you along for the journey and welcome your comments and discussions through the links found on your favorite podcast platformEnjoy.Contact Siri FacebookEmailThe Pilates Diaries PodcastWebsiteFacebookInstagramEpisode SponsorsTRIMIOPilates Reformers Australia10% off with min. $100 spend - use PILATESDIARIES21Whealthy-Life10% off - use PILATESDIARIESToeSox Australia15% off with min. $49 spend - use PILATESDIARIES21
The Feet. Ugh, love ‘em or hate ‘em, we're stuck with them. Many people experience foot pain and may not know what to do about it, but Joe Pilates understood what to do, in fact, he invented two small devices to help correct the feet. The foot corrector and the Toe exerciser or sometimes referred to as the Toe Gizmo, were designed to strengthen and make supple the very foundation of our skeleton. I've asked our guest today, Karen Moran, a physical therapist to explain from her perspective how the feet play a major role in developing and maintaining a healthy functioning body. Karen is the founder and CEO of Fusion Arts Physical Therapy in Los Angeles, CA., where she specializes in Dance Medicine. Theaters such as the Pantages, the Ahmanson, Mark Taper, and various other theaters in the Los Angeles area have employed her to keep their performers healthy. In addition, Karen has treated professional dancers in companies such as Los Angeles Dance Project, Los Angeles Ballet and Hubbard Street Dance. In Ep.73 of the Sports Therapy Association Podcast, we bring you an hour with special guest Raphael Bender, CEO of Breathe Education, a hugely popular Pilates training programme based in Australia, Melbourne. With a Master's degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology, a Bachelor degree in Exercise and Sports Science, a Diploma of Pilates Movement Therapy and full Stott Pilates instructor trainer certification, Raphael is host of the Pilates Elephants podcast, along with co-host Cloe Bunter. In this episode, Raphael talks to us about the phases of focus change that Pilates has gone through since its inventor Joseph Hubertus Pilates first developed what he called "Contrology" in the early 20th century: 1960's - Joseph Pilates and his wife Clara operate their studio on Eighth Avenue in New York 1970's - the era of Romana Kryzanowska (one of Joseph's students) 1980's - Frank Philip Friedman and Gail Eisen (two of Romana's students) publish the first modern book on Pilates: The Pilates Method of Physical and Mental Conditioning 1990's - A study by Profesor Paul Hodges of Queensland University Australia on deep abdominal muscle the transversus abdominis (TrA) coins use of the term 'core stability' and the idea that the “drawing in” of this muscle during exercise could provide protection against back pain. Using this information, Contemporary Pilates is born. Raphael talks us through the misconceptions that emerged with the era of 'Contemporary Pilates', and explains how pre-1990s Pilates had no mention of 'core stability' or focus on individual muscles. In showing the evolution of Pilates, he draws many parallels to the evolution of soft tissue and manual therapy. Many of the concepts introduced in the late 1990's regarding posture, alignment and their proposed connection with pain have since proved to be less valuable than once considered, if not plain wrong. Does it mean we have to throw everything we have ever learnt away? Of course not, we just need to refocus slightly and continue the great work we can do. Raphael is an awesome educator and we offer our sincerest thanks to him for being our guest in this episode. ¡Hola! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/elpodcastdepilates4k/message
¡Hola! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/elpodcastdepilates4k/message

Those of us in the classical Pilates world who were either trained by Romana or from someone who trained with Romana, owe her a deep sense of gratitude for giving many of us the ability to have a viable profession. Most people only knew Romana as their Pilates mentor, but in Cathy’s biography, little known facts about Romana reveal a more interesting life beyond her certification program, Romana’s Pilates.
In 1983, Lori Coleman-Brown was a dance major at SUNY Purchase, a college just outside New York City, and during a school party, Lori let loose and while free-style dancing, she severely twisted her knee. Her dance teacher at the time suggested that she try the Pilates method to help heal her knee and Lori learned of Romana Kryzanowska in New York City. Lori was fascinated by Pilates and so curious about what was under the skin, she thought physical therapy would pair beautifully with Pilates and decided to go to physical therapy school. She graduated with a Masters in physical therapy and the following year, Lori moved to Seattle for an opportunity to open the first Pilates Teacher Training Center in the Pacific Northwest.
I met my guest, Moses Urbano over 20 years ago during a Romana’s Pilates convention and we’ve stayed connected ever since. Moses’s personal philosophy is to forever remain a student and he demonstrates this by continuing as a student with his fellow teachers and instructor trainers at Romana’s Pilates. His passion is to share his Pilates journey and to support Pilates instructors around the world. Through the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, Moses had the great privilege of assisting and traveling with Romana Kryzanowska on her certifying tours abroad. Though Romana is no longer with us physically, I know her spirit is very happy to know Moses has taken a leadership role in the Pilates community and is mentoring new generations of teachers. Please note: The phone connection was less than optimal, my apologies.Originally aired: April 28, 2019
The Reformer, the most enduring and popular Pilates apparatus our genius mentor, Jospeh Pilates invented. Originally named, the Universal Reformer, this piece in the Pilates line-up was first built by the inventor himself and his brother, Fred. As the Universal Reformer gained more attention, the demand for it became greater. Romana Kryzanowska, one of Mr. Pilates’ most devoted disciples, continued his teachings on his apparatus at the NYC original studio after Joe passed away. Then in the late 1960’s a fortuitous meeting with Donald Gratz, a metal installation and furniture company owner would set in motion the next generation of apparatus, including the reformer. Now, in 2019, there is yet, another iteration of the classical Pilates reformer, this time, manufactured by Balanced Body, a leader in the Pilates apparatus industry. My guest today is Ana Caban who is the Balanced Body Brand Ambassador for the new Contrology reformer. Originally aired: April 7, 2019
In 2018, I visited England for the first time as an instructor, and where I spent a week teaching classical Pilates to both classical and contemporary teachers. My DVD, The First Seven, also made its England debut and is our today's topic. I conceived of The First Seven in 2010 as a way to help beginning students understand the Pilates technique. I titled the DVD, The First Seven, because those were the first mat exercises I learned from Romana Kryzanowska. Her simple but effective approach into the mat repertoire by teaching these seven basic exercises was extremely helpful and I knew it would help others. The First Seven is sold on Amazon and a great addition to your DVD library.Originally aired: May 6, 2018

After Donald took over the family business and while delivering a metal furniture piece to one of his customers met Romana Kryzanowska at his customer’s home. Romana had needed a manufacturer for her apparatus as more and more teachers were arriving at her studio, the original Pilates studio, eager to learn the method from her and then needing apparatus to work on at home. Meanwhile, Donald went on a blind date with a young reporter named Roberta Brandes. Roberta began her journalistic career as a copy girl in 1963. She quickly rose up to become a reporter for the New York Post in 1965 where she spent the next 15 years. This interview is part of her story.Originally aired: December 23, 2018
In 1980, Dr. Sichel graduated from the New York Chiropractic College specializing in applied kinesiology and non-force work and opened an office on the East Side of New York City. Two years later, Dr. Sichel heard about the Pilates method and more specifically, Romana Kryzanowska and the amazing postural improvements her clients were experiencing. It was around that time period when Dr. Sichel saw a photo of himself holding his daughter at her one year birthday party. He took one look at his faulty posture and the very next day he, too, became a Romana student.Originally aired: March 10, 2018

This is a wonderful and rich conversation that if you call yourself a Pilates teacher you DON'T WANT TO MISS. It's an iconic and critical dialogue with one of the teachers who has not only been trail blazing within the industry for 30 years, but is and has been deeply invested in understanding the Pilates system in all of it's power and uniqueness. If you're not a Pilates teacher but a movement teacher of ANY KIND -- or a Pilates enthusiast -- this is one of those conversations that will give you perspective on both how to go deeper into the method or modality you do teach, how to stay curious and committed to a personal path in movement, and give you lots of wonderful perspectives on movement and teaching in and of themselves. It's long and it's WORTH IT.Listen. Explore. Get quiet. Take deep breaths and GET CURIOUS...And SHARE.James: "When you read my piece, what did you read? The first few years of my career I didn't even know there was this conversation...You know. You're educated the way you're educated. You come into, in this case, Pilates in whatever door you've entered. I've always just felt exceedingly grateful and sheer lucky that I started with Romana. And I knew nothing else until many years later when I was like, oh, there's all of these other people doing Pilates and it doesn't look like what Romana taught me necessarily.'So over the many years I've been trying to, because it's just my way, define what it is that's so unique about the system of Pilates versus a lot of exercises done on Pilates equipment, many of which are also very good. But what's the distinction of the system: the order, the sequence, the equipment being correct, the fact that all of the exercises are whole body. There's a uniqueness to the full design of the system and I think for so many years we've been standing for THAT out in kind of the more contemporary world; being the only classical people to attend the PMA until very recently. So many years ago I knew I was going to have to figure out for myself what is this thing?!Because I could speak my truth at a PMA but there were lots of people who had very different truths. So i had to get to a place where I was very clear for myself, for me personally, what this thing was and how I'd be able to stand with deep roots when I spoke about it in the face of so many other opinions and perspectives and even the knowledge that people had about what was good and what wasn't good to do in movement.I long ago started this conversation with myself, and it was just another opportunity when I read your article to try to put it into words again."About AmyAmy with her sister Rachel opened the Pilates Center in Boulder, CO, more than 25 years ago and have been leaders in the industry for nearly as long.
