#50 - The Body Knows. Creativity in Times of Grief / Smadar Goshen

Material for the brain

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 17, 2025 89:05

My guest for the 50th episode is Smadar Goshen, a choreographer, dancer, a certified Gaga teacher and a Gyrotonic & Gyrokinesis trainer and teacher's trainer. Smadar completed her B.A in dance and M.A in choreography at the Jerusalem Academy for Music and Dance. Since 2011 her pieces are performed on various platforms worldwide. In the yearbook of magazine tanz 2023, She was honoured as one of the 10 promising choreographers & dance pioneers in Germany. Since 2024 she is supported by the state capital Stuttgart and the Landesverband Freie Tanz-und Theaterschaffende Baden-Wuerttemberg. In our conversation, we explored the tension between personal identity and artistic expression, the role of the body in processing memory and trauma, and the impact of grief on creativity. We talked about the ways in which the body carries memory and trauma and about how Smadar's artistic practice engages with personal and historical narratives. We talked about the role of dance as a channel for transformation and about the difference between performing to be seen and performing as a medium for something larger. We talked about the instinct to resist being absorbed into a collective identity and about how that tension informs Smadar's work. We talked about Jewish identity, the legacy of the Holocaust, and about how Smadar's encounter with a memorial site deeply shifted her perspective. We talked about the war in Israel, about its impact on identity, and about the complex emotions of belonging to a national narrative. We talked about how the body knows things before the mind does and about the importance of listening to the body in times of transformation and much more.Connect with Smadar:Website - https://smadargoshen.com/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/smadar.goshen/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/smadar_goshen/Vimeo - https://vimeo.com/user14631161Support the podcast:https://movementlab.eu/mftb-supportSubscribe to get the podcast to your email:https://movementlab.eu/subscribe15% Discount Coupon for our online courses: MATERIALFORTHEBRAIN15%https://movementlab.eu/courses

38 min.   Interview:  Jen Bleier, Somatic Educator Maureen and Pierre interview Jen Bleier, friend and somatic educator.  Trained in Gyrotonic, Gyrokinesis, Pilates, Somatic Experience practitioner, and small "d" dancer.   Jen's work spans different modalities, hence her self-description as a somatic educator.  Jen said: “when you work with bodies, you can't not work with emotions.” Maureen and Jen are on the same team - working to heal, working to educate, integrating Mind Body Spirit health. So what is Gyrotonic? Officially:  the Gyrotonic Expansion System. Gyro - meaning rotating movement that heals - hence tonic. Those who do yoga and work with bodies, those who suffer with lower back issues, sciatica, know the pain that comes from our skeletal system impinging nerves. Better support, better flexibility and expansion of the skeletal system can relieve that pain. Increased space in the skeletal system promotes synovial fluid, whose principal role is to reduce friction between cartilege and bones in joints. Improved flexibility in the body, for instance through an expanded skeletal system that is being compressed everyday by gravity, walking, standing and sitting, can produce improve health.   .  Gyrotonic started out as "Yoga for Dancers." It was started Juliu Horvath. There are over 6,000 Gyrotonic trainers worldwide.  Perhaps you didn't know that?  We certainly didn't until Jen educated us. Check Jen out at:   https://jenbleier.offeringtree.com Check out Gyrotonic:  https://www.centergyrotonic.com/about/gyrotonic_expansion_system/ In a similar vein, Ido Portal:  Movement Culture. https://www.idoportal.com Healing through movement. At the beginning of the podcast, Maureen says: "we're all waiting for the medical world to catch-up." Meaning, catch-up to practicality and success of somatic paths to improved health.  And to some extent it is. Physical therapy after surgery - get up and move. Medical imaging's improved understanding of healing and body mechanics, brain function. And, yet to some extent it isn't because movement therapy is difficult to monetize. Nonetheless, through sharing and learning pathways, courtesy of podcasts, streaming videos, worldwide web interconnectivity, it's happening. We're delighted you are along for the ride in Learning Conversation.  Enjoy!

Holle was integral in helping shape the structure of HealingStrong, which in part, helps in guiding group leaders with policies, procedures and processes. She came into therapeutic movement through the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® in 2005 with an injury. Beginning a GYROTONIC® apprenticeship at Body-n-Balance in Alpharetta, Georgia, she began to teach while rehabilitating her shoulder.⁣She is certified as a Gyrokinesis instructor and a Pre-Trainer authorized to teach students beginning on their own path to instructorship.   ⁣Holle attended her first therapeutic course with Paul Horvath and Uwe Herbstreit in 2007, and the direction of her work refined towards holistic, comprehensive resolution of bio-mechanical pain patterns.  In working with people struggling through chronic pain, she recognized a frequent connection to situations of stress and backgrounds of trauma. Combining the beauty of art and nature, the kinship of supportive people, and the empowerment of movement, she started facilitating retreats for women to restore hope and foster healing.⁣To more fully help people bridge the divide between movement potential and current restrictions, Holle gained her licensed massage therapist designation in 2020, and shortly after began personal mentorship under 5 time Olympic team massage therapist Benny Vaughn.Holle's Website: www.holleknowles.comHealingStrong Mission Statement

I don't know who coined the term movement is medicine, but it resonates for me. My early experiences with exercise were not joyful; grade school physical education was bad medicine. But once I started dancing with friends in high school – before carding and ID checks were mandatory – I experienced movement in a positive way. Shortly after college I started a yoga practice which was medicine for my body and mind. In this podcast episode I tell my story of what led up to the 2021 launch of the May Movement Challenge -- a month of free online movement classes that are meant to be accessible and adaptive for anyone and everyone. You'll also hear from Natalie Graniela – one of the several movement instructors participating in the annual May Movement Challenge. Natalie talks about her gyrokinesis movement practice and working with senior adults as well as people with different bodies and abilities. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. This week we are joined by choreographer, dancer, and GYROTONIC® trainer, Jessica Chen. Jessica is sharing how her love for movement and dance led her on a path to find a cross training exercise known as GYROTONIC® and how we can all benefit from this method of movement. Jessica discusses the main principles of GYROTONIC® and how it can benefit professional athletes, people looking to get more movement into their lives and even people who claim to “hate working out.”. Listen in to learn more about GYROTONIC® and how it can be used to restore balance and symmetry in your body.IN THIS EPISODE: ●   [06:47] Jessica Chen shares how movement and her love for dance led her on a search for the perfect cross training exercise.●   [15:30] What is GYROTONIC® and how does it differ from similar practices? ●   [18:32] How to know if GYROTONIC® or GYROKINESIS® is the right fit for you. ●   [22:00] Why GYROTONIC® is great for both athletes and people who hate working out. ●   [30:15] Jessica explains the equipment needed for GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®.●   [34:28] Should someone start with private lessons or group classes? ●   [38:53] How GYROTONIC® helps you understand where a movement is coming from? ●   [43:50] How to find a qualified trainer near you and what goes into becoming a certified GYROTONIC® trainer.KEY TAKEAWAYS: ●   GYROTONIC® is not just doing the movements, but the quality of how you do the movements. ●   The main focus of GYROTONIC® is to mobilize the spine and joints. ●   People experiencing back pain can benefit from GYROTONIC®. ●   There is a joy to expressing your body, whether you're a professional dancer or you just like to shake it out.  Your body likes to move, it was made to move. ●   When you move, you may not realize that you compensate one side for the other, so having a GYROTONIC® instructor to help focus on your movements can really help restore balance in your body.QUOTES: “One of the main principles of GYROTONIC® is to mobilize the spine, and also with that, to decompress the joints.” Jessica Chen“Pain, in some ways, is stuck energy, so we need to move the energy, but we can't move it if there's no space to move it. So we need to create space and then move the energy to move the pain out.” Jessica Chen“GYROTONIC® brings us back into symmetry, back into balance.” Jessica Chen“Our bodies settle into old patterns. We sort of have these established tendencies that I think we don't necessarily recognize for ourselves.” Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of Fries  Jenn's Free Menu PlanJenn's InstagramSalad with a Side of Fries InstagramA Salad With a Side of Fries WebsiteDNA Miracles: For 10% off and free shipping, text MIRACLES to 844-947-4846 GUEST RESOURCES:Jessica Chen WebsiteJessica Chen Project WebsiteJessica Chen InstagramJessica Chen Company InstagramJessica Chen FacebookJessica Chen TwitterBIO: Jessica Chen is choreographer, dancer, teacher, and Artistic Director of J CHEN PROJECT, a 501c3 contemporary dance company based in NYC.  She holds a B.A. in Global Studies from the University of California Santa Barbara and continued her dance training at The Ailey School.  GYROTONIC®:  Jessica is an authorized GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® instructor.   She is certified in all the specialized equipment including Leg Extension Unit, Archway, Jump & Stretch Board, and GYROTONER®.  She is also certified in Dancers' Application 1 and Dancer's Application 2.  She approaches the work from her movement background.  Jessica's highlights as a GYROTONIC® trainer include training Broadway dancers and actors and working with clients of all ages with a variety of levels and needs.

Jamila Kekulah Kinney (she/they) is the creator of The Moving Soul, a holistic movement practice that utilizes curiosity, focus and self observation to explore body awareness, body conditioning, and self-inquiry. Jamila's multifacted body and movement training includes GYROTONIC® & GYROKINESIS® methods, Pilates, dance, dance/movement therapy, mindfulness training, somatic meditation, Reiki, yoga and Zen Shiatsu. As a life long learner they believe that "uncovering the gifts of being human can occur through developing a relationship to self through mindfulness and the body." In our conversation, Jamila begins by describing her embodiment as originating through suffering and pain; in order to manage the discomfort, Jamila moved. They emphasize the importance of acknowledging what we don't know so that we may "be open and curious to meeting ourselves and what is, in the moment." Jamila observes and interacts with the forces both internal and external that restrain and constrict how we are allowed to exist and move in our bodies. In follow up conversations, Jamila and I have discussed how internal forces include but are not limited to personal/familial traumas or mental habits of self-criticism or fear. Although Jamila doesn't specify in this conversation the external forces that disempower, this is invitation to identify all conditions –-systemic, intergenerational, social, and cultural-- that live in our collective consciousness and often separate us from the possibility of flourishing together. In particular, I want to call out the dominant cultural forces that oppress bodies, especially for Black, Indigenous and people of color, for women, for LGBTQIA+folks, for those with disabilities and anyone who deviates from the prescribed ideal fostered by industries and structures that capitalize on the insecurity and shaming of our bodies. As the United States reels from yet another white supremacist act of violence, I want to also remind us all that violence against others begins in the mind, in the consciousness, in how we conceive of bodies of others. This work, the work Jamila does, offers a way through. No one likes the thought of getting old.Your body starts to break down… becomes more fragile, a lot more aches and pains, less flexibility and unfortunately… worse SEX.What if we told you it doesn't need to go down like that? … that there was a way to feel 20 years younger than your chronological age? … that sex could be BETTER in your 70's than it was in your 30's?These sound like really big, (maybe unrealistic) claims but Gay and Mike have both experienced these things (well, Mike's not in his 70's) and today they're going to share their secrets with you. They'll talk about the art of the “breathgasm,” what “conscious eldering” is all about and transcendent sex in your 70s. They'll also cover dealing with regrets, something called Gyrokinesis and a magical substance Mike found that is SUPER effective for getting rid of your aches and pains and helping you feel and look younger – and it's cheap! If this all sounds exciting or if it scares the hell out of you, you're going to love this episode. Keep listening or watch us on YouTube.Gay is 75 years old and has been engaged in conscious living and conscious loving his entire adult life. When he turned 50, he started thinking about what he could do to have a great elderly life and it's working like a dream. What is conscious eldering? When Gay was 50 he heard an interview with the Dalai Lama, who was 58 at the time. The Dalai Lama said that he was beginning to turn more of his attention to his death and to making the most of what he had left.Up until that point, Gay hadn't given any thought to his death consciously, so he started thinking about how he wanted his elder years to be and came up with a broad framework that he and his wife Katie, sat down and talked about. They made the decision to refine their lives so that we were only doing what they most loved to do and were only doing it with the people they loved the most. At the time, they were running a big operation so they started refining and “right-sizing” their business and life. Getting rid of a big office building, selling a few of their homes, a lot of their “stuff,” and employing less people, therefore reducing their stress levels immensely.Gay went out of his way to create a life and job that he would never want to retire from. His life is now full only of things he most loves to do.He says every breath you take after 50 is a choice between creativity or stagnation. When you get into your 50s, you've probably got a pretty good life. You're making money, you have great friends, and a home, but if you don't make the jump to what's regeneratively creative in you, then life won't be pretty in your 60s and 70s. The GOOD NEWS is that he knows people can feel happy, vibrant, creative and alive into their 80s because he's seen it with his own eyes.Mike is 54 years old right now and he's definitely noticing aches and pains when he wakes up that he didn't notice before and he doesn't like them. It can be a massive distraction that affects his focus and ability to deliver value to his clients. Historically, these things get worse with time but he has discovered the miracle of peptides.Mike broke his collarbone 12 weeks ago and was in the most unbelievable pain. He was doing research on pain management and discovered peptides. Peptides are basically little proteins that get activated when they're injected or injested. We've got tons and tons of peptides but they activate different parts of your body. Mike found one called BPC 157 that has pretty much relieved ALL of his pain AND healed his 30 year old gut issues. It's miraculous. There are tons of other peptides that help with many different health issues. Mike has found that the injections are the best option. You can buy them online and they're really cheap. He buys his from a place called www.peptidesciences.com (FYI, he's am not a doctor, nor does he play one on TV

¡Hola! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/elpodcastdepilates4k/message
