How often do you want to quit?    Michal Molcan is the editor of the Standart magazine. And a dreamer too! He kind of did the impossible: Michal started a niche magazine about coffee and has made it to be a well-known brand, publishing in different languages on different continents holding a strong yet nomadic team spread globally... His print runs are strong and growing, magazines are read in coffee shops in London and New York, yet he lives in Prague and loves running away to work retreats in nature. I had only one question for him: HOW? How did you build such a strong business?    Also, a founder myself (I'm guessing you guys reading are founders or freelancers too) I was curious to know how many times it felt too hard and too much? How many times did he want to quit?    It's a good episode. I highly enjoyed it. Amanda Blair is a Daily Differentness Ambassador, a coach, a mentor and now a published author. Her book “Limited edition of one” is a philosophy on how to stop fitting in and start living your most true and unique life. “At other times, the pain had gone very deep. I seemed to load more and more pressure on myself to “get it right”. The result was often a feeling of rejection and therefore failure. A few times I'd exchanged my London second-hand-shop look for the corporate kit, complete with killer heels, to get my foot in the door of financial PR in New York. For whatever reason (perhaps that I don't like numbers?), it didn't work. I'd cooked local recipes badly in France to build a social life and ended up with nothing but leftovers. Even “success” had brought failure sometimes. Like when I made a good job of pretending to adore Wagner while living in Germany and ended up editing someone's 80-page thesis on him.” Amanda lived in 7 different countries for prolonged periods of time and is an expert of “when in Rome, do as the Romans do”. Until she discovered how much good “standing out” can do for us. In this conversation, we dive deep into why humans have such a strong desire to be unique and just like everyone else at the same time. We also talk about pink flamingos and why really hard life experiences have truly magical healing powers. Starting small it grew quickly being picked up by world known publications such as the Stylist, The Sunday Times, Elle Decoration, The Times, The Evening Standard and many more. What did Miriam do to achieve success?    Why do some companies die out and others thrive? We sit down to look into various decisions Miriam made along the way and analyse why Undercover is doing so well.    Another subject we touch upon in this episode is motherhood. In the era of “FLOW” and other concepts created by men who do not give birth in the middle of their careers, working mothers are so badly overlooked. What if you sleep 3 hours a night and then still go to have strategy meetings and make decisions? What if you are trying to look after a small baby but also have to grow a team? All on very little sleep? There are torturing techniques based on sleep deprivation, and yet women are capable of going through that and ALSO building a business. HEROES!   You are not alone. In the “What do people do podcast?” we talk to successful founders about what their days and to-do lists actually look like. Plant therapy, dance therapy, aromatherapy - how much have you heard about these disciplines within the mental wellness industry? Do you think those are strange? But then again, so was meditation or yoga, until it started to get normalized within the society we live in.    In this episode, Auste interviews Maggie Coker - a holistic mental health coach, creative mentor, and aromatherapist. They talk about how one can explore different kinds of mental wellness disciplines and other methods, so one can integrate awareness about their mental health into their everyday lives. And no, that is not meditation. We go beyond that. And while the conversation centers around broadening our perspective around mental health and mental wellness, we also talk about Maggie's creative projects in Berlin, community building, cities we live in, and societies that sometimes drive us to burnout.  Maggie is fantastic because she has such a broad perspective on all of this, and we just loved having her on the podcast. What is the backstory of - What do people do? and what did Auste do before joining the team? This is a brilliant example of how the 10 thousand hour rule works in real life! Each week we invite people to share their vulnerable stories, and this time around, we choose to tell our own.  Also, the true podcast fans will love a glimpse behind how episodes are made. For example, Rasa (who's a non-smoker) had to smoke a cigarette before interviewing David Hieatt and Auste not being able to believe someone like Emma Gannon not only replied to her message but also agreed to an interview. This might look like a story about wanting too much and working too hard. Actually, it's about not feeling enough. Greta Madline worked harder than anyone else. She's built a good freelance life in her hometown and once it got comfortable - she moved to Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, where she worked even harder. Once Greta established herself there - she moved countries, and started all over again in Amsterdam, finally reaching a dream point: her client list was filled with famous brand names, she worked with the best people in the industry and her pockets were full of money. And then? She left again. No matter how much she achieved, she never felt content. Why? Yet, this time round, instead of looking for new work opportunities, she decided to… find herself. Why do creatives suffer so much at work? What's wrong with the “go-getter” mindset, and “fake till you make” it mantra?

"How many people do you know that go to work every day and describe it as this thing I do 5 days a week so that the 2 days I can see my friends? It's such a depressing outlook for life". Matt Simmonds had everything - a successful startup, funding, career and media recognition. Forbes named him as 30 under 30, even the queen of England used the products produced by Matt's startup. He lived a dream life. And then, suddenly, he quit. Why? This is a story about not building a life based on other people's values. Matt spent a year trying out all sorts of professions - from an adventurer to a farmer, interviewed people who were incredibly happy at work, and he also met neuroscientists and psychologists all in order to find what an ideal job should look like.  At the end of it, he even wrote a book under the same name "The meaning of work". Find it online here: https://www.themeaningof.work/  On average, we spend 86 thousand hours at work - more than we see our loved ones or simply chill and enjoy life. Matt took a year off to figure out what makes us happy at work. We hope this episode saves you time & helps define what you really want from life. Secretly, we also hope it inspires you to stop doing “this thing 5 days a week so for the rest 2 days you can see friends…”  Sending love! This podcast is supported by patrons - thanks guys

EP 1: How to stop feeling like a failure

"I was convinced nobody in London would ever hire me because I'm... useless. I had this idea in my head that I'm a failure even before starting something" says Indre Kulikauskaitė, a marketing strategist working in London, living in Vilnius and often based in Bali. After her startup failed big time (her relationship with a business partner-boyfriend followed) she was left with thousands in debt to friends and relatives, jobless with not even enough cash to buy a good meal let alone a mascara. This is a real story about Indre's journey from feeling like an imposter to getting a job and googling what she's supposed to do (and then nailing it), as well as learning to appreciate her weaknesses (hence they soon become strenghts).
