Michelle Ogundehin is best known as the head judge of Interior Designs Masterclass on BBC 1. It's a programme I am utterly addicted to, and I was therefore delighted to have been asked to join as a guest judge for semi finals week, this week (TX 23/4/24). I have been a fan of Michelle's expert eye when it comes to interiors for a long time, having devoured every issue of Elle Decoration published during her time as editor in chief from 2004 to 2017. I love her approach to homes and how they make you feel, always taking into account the link between our environment and how it affects our mental health. Off-screen, Michelle is a devoted single mum to her 10 year old son. She became a mum later in life, after years of trying, and her journey included IVF and four miscarriages. She says her son is the best thing that has ever happened to her. We talked about her worries about becoming a mum due to her own mother not being maternal or loving to her. She told me how she has recently been ‘album-ing' her life and also that she believes that what surrounds us at home affects us. I finally tested her boundaries when I mischievously suggested she should let her little boy draw on his bedroom walls, just as my mum let me!Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones. To the cult British interior and furniture designer Ilse Crawford, interiors too often take a backseat to architecture. Through her humanistic, systems-thinking, “Frame for Life” approach, however, Crawford has shown how interiors and architecture should instead be viewed on the same plane and, as she puts it on this episode of Time Sensitive, “walk hand in hand.” Widely known for creating indoor spaces that are notable in their tactility, warmth, and comfort—environments that incorporate, to use her phrase, “visceral materiality”—Crawford oversees her namesake London-based design studio, Studioilse, which she launched in 2003, and whose projects include the first Soho House members' club in New York, the Ett Hem hotel in Stockholm, and the Cathay Pacific lounges in Hong Kong. Crawford is also the founder of the department of Man and Wellbeing at the Design Academy Eindhoven, in the Netherlands, which she headed for two decades. Prior to her career as a designer, she was the celebrated founding editor of Elle Decoration U.K.On this episode, Crawford discusses her approach to crafting beautiful, highly original spaces that push against today's speedy, copy-paste, Instagram-moment world; her early career in media; and her personal definition of the word “slow.”Special thanks to our Season 9 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:[5:09] StudioIlse[7:25] A Frame for Life[58:32] Design Academy Eindhoven[7:25] Svenkst Tenn[7:25] Ett Hem[16:36] Jeanette Mix[1:02:51] Cathay Pacific[47:42] Elle Decoration[29:11] The Eyes of the Skin[33:52] Alvar Aalto[33:52] Paimio Sanatorium[33:52] Christopher Alexander[31:35] Sensual Home[35:24] Leonard Koren[35:46] Frida Escobedo[47:42] Architect's Journal[47:42] The World of Interiors[47:42] Min Hogg[52:48] Donna Karan[54:04] Soho House[54:04] Babington House[1:00:08] Home Is Where the Heart Is?

What is happening in the world of fashion, what colors prevail and where does Mexican fashion stand in all of this? Donna Wilson is a globally-feted designer. She initially made a name for herself in 2003 with a series of knitted toy creatures made of lambswools, which managed to be odd and endearing all at the same time. Since then, she has worked with the likes of SCP, John Lewis, V&A Dundee, as well as having a solo show at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Meanwhile, her range of products has expanded, encompassing furniture and accessories, sculpture, fashion, and magazines. There's also a book. In 2010, she was named Designer of the Year at Elle Decoration's British Design Awards. Most recently, she has launched The Knit Shop, a micro-knit factory in Dundee. She describes the new production facility as ‘my small bit to keep the tradition of knitwear and textile production in Scotland alive, so that these precious skills are not lost forever'.In this episode, we talk about: taking control of her production and the difficulty of manufacturing in the UK; how the pandemic re-shaped her business; becoming a brand; creating her creatures; preserving her craft essence; the importance of repair; having a poem written about her (yes, really); knitting; growing up on a Scottish farm and being inspired by her grandmother; and how getting spotted by New York design retailer Murray Moss changed her career. We are delighted that the headline sponsor for this series of the podcast – and the Material Matters fair – is the brilliant lighting specialist, Bert Frank. Chockrosa. Ärtgrönt. Solgult. Havsblått. Och ännu mer rosa. Starka färger smyger sig alltmer in i modet.

In the era of “FLOW” and other concepts created by men who do not give birth in the middle of their careers, working mothers are so badly overlooked. What if you sleep 3 hours a night and then still go to have strategy meetings and make decisions? What if you are trying to look after a small baby but also have to grow a team? All on very little sleep? There are torturing techniques based on sleep deprivation, and yet women are capable of going through that and ALSO building a business. HEROES!   You are not alone. She shifted into running her own design studio (https://naomicleaver.com/) and her award-winning design work on iQ Shoreditch in 2012 established her ability and she’s been specialising in communal living – Student Accommodation, Co-Living, Co-working, Build to Rent, Later Life and Hotel design ever since. She’s been described as being “responsible for introducing professional interior design to the student housing sector” and Naomi’s work has been described as “warm, eccentric ... clever, idiosyncratic”  by Grand Designs Magazine;  and “dramatic, witty and just a little bit racy” by Elle Decoration. I met Naomi in the back room of The Globe Hotel (https://www.theglobetopsham.co.uk/) in Topsham, which is close to her Devon home where she lives with her husband. What she doesn't know about digital media isn't worth knowing. She specializes in editorial content that exceeds set traffic targets, digital strategy and native advertising, creative briefs and executions, as well as engagement-driving videos and social products.  With all that going on she still has time to be a mentor for the ReachOutUK mentoring charity and runs the natural and organic living blog-F Toxins,  with her sister Ariane I first met her on a panel discussion and heard her talk all about digital strategies specifically with magazines in mind and knew I had to have her on the show and I'm so glad I did.

This is our 10th episode. Can you believe it? THANK YOU for listening! We’ve covered some big ugly issues from ocean plastic to Rana Plaza so we thought it was about time we talked about beauty. Beauty is one of the major motivators for people who work in creative industries – they want to make beautiful things, whether it’s a garment, textile, show or picture. They want, as Megan Morton puts it in this Episode, to chase down true beauty wherever they see it. Not to push the beautiful lie but to try to capture and understand it. Megan is a stylist, author and “house whisperer” with a life-long love for vintage and the stories behind old things. She grew up on a banana farm in Queensland, where her mum subscribed to 1970s back-to-the-land magazine, Grass Roots. Megan grew up seeing the beauty in nature, while figuring out how to make stuff. Today her styling work is focused on houses and interiors, but she turns her eye for beauty on everything from her wardrobe, to teaching to travel to Instagram. She’s worked for magazines like Vogue Living and Elle Decoration, and is the author of four books. The latest? It’s Beautiful Here (Thames & Hudson). In this Episode we go off on a lot of beautiful tangents about managing stress in the creative industries, the heart and soul of getting dressed, the value of vintage and the importance of the handmade. We try and pin down beauty, what it means and why we seek it, and discuss the beauty of provenance, generosity and sharing. “Being flush and doing well affects everybody in your circle and the only way to keep that going is to be generous with your knowledge. The more you give away, the more free you are.” says Megan. Megan is also the founder of The School, a creative hub in Sydney where you can learn things like shibori dyeing and extreme knitting from the best-of-the-best craftspeople inside the industry. Hello crafternoon-inspiration. The WARDROBE CRISIS show notes unpack the issues addressed in each Episode.
