Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the federal government introduced a special program to allow Ukrainians to temporarily work, study and stay in Canada until it was safe for them to return home. Nearly 300 thousand people have since arrived through that program. In late 2023, Canada announced a similar program to help Canadians get family members out of Gaza. 10 months later, it is unclear whether the program has facilitated the exit of any Palestinians from Gaza. We speak with immigration and refugee lawyer Randall Cohn.

She has a Master of Science degree in Business Leadership from Concordia College of New York from which she graduated with Honors in 2017 and received the Young Alumni of Distinction Award in 2019. She is the Founder and Executive Director of The Family Support Consultants. She is a member of New York Women's Chamber of Commerce, Women in Black of the Greater New York area, a member of The International Society of Female Professionals, and a member of the Supervised Visitation Network. Ann worked as social worker in New York City Child Welfare for over 25 years and has Empowered, Coached and Mentored women who have their children placed in the foster care system. She teaches Parenting Skills classes, provides Supervised Visitation Services on custody court cases. She also provides Reunification Coaching Services to birth parents of children in foster care. She is a Chaplain and also a Board-Certified Christian Counselor through the National Association of Christian Counselors. She provides Faith-Based Counseling as requested. Ann Elliott worked in the New York City Child Welfare system for 25 years. She is a former CPS- Child Protective Services worker for the Administration for Children Services where she worked for 10 years and 15 years in the foster care Agencies. She has firsthand knowledge of the trafficking of children as she was approached to traffic children in her cases by her superiors. It was then that she began to see how extensive and complicit the agency, courts judges and attorneys were, in this vast criminal empire of trafficking children in the child welfare system. She has put her life at risk by coming forward with this information but knows that she must be a voice for the voiceless at all costs. In Honor of Senator Nancy Schaefer a Warrior and Champion for Child Welfare Reform, who stated “I believe Child Protective Service [CPS] nationwide has become corrupt and that the entire system is broken beyond repair. I am convinced parents and families should be warned of the dangers”, Ann has created an organization – REFORM CWN + FAMILY SUPPORT CONSULTANTS - passionate about advocating for the reform of the child welfare and family court system in New York, to be Agents of Change and Reform for the Child Welfare and Family Court Judicial System. The mission is to address the concerns of the Adoption and Safe Family Act (ASFA), that is pro-adoption and that expedites Termination of Parental Rights. The organization also tackles the systemic failures within Child Protective Services (CPS), foster care and Family Court. FAMILY SUPPORT CONSULTANTS is dedicated to Parent Empowerment & Advocacy and Family Reunification, as well as : highlighting concerns such as high turnover of CPS in field offices, illegal removal of documentation that supports parents progress and that compromises their court cases and financial incentives that compromises the welfare of children in the system and Family Court. The focus is also to bring attention to the concerns of child trafficking through the foster care system, family court corruption, compromised custody cases by rogue judges with judicial immunity and advocating for better support and resources for parents and children reunification and family stabilization. ..... kudos to Mr. Thomas Chung, her mentor.

Tina Swithin, survivor, author and family court advocate, joins Amanda and Jenna in today's episode to talk about the confounding decision some family court judges are making to force traumatized and abused children to see or even live with their abusive parents. Utilizing something called Family Reunification Camps, these judges order already terrified children to be forcibly removed from a protective parent's home and sent to a facility where they're isolated, abused and gaslighted into believing the abuse they just recently escaped from never happened at all and that the parent they saw beat their mom is real sorry about that. Sweet! It recently happened to the children of Josh Homme, accused abuser of his wife Brody Dalle. Homme, vocalist/guitarist of Queens of the Stone Age and drummer for Eagles of Death Metal. Though he threatned to kill his wife, among other atrocities, and despite Dalle testifying that Homme had hit the children, drove drunk with them and that they were scared to be with him, his two young sons were forcibly removed from their home and haven't seen their mom in over a year. Not shockingly, abusers who insist on having custody of their kids who are terrified of them is a power move by abusers to punish and control their partners, and not about these a-holes being any kind of decent parent. And since our criminal justice system was largely built by men to benefit men, these legalized kidnappings track. But that doesn't mean they have to continue. Thanks to the efforts of tireless advocates like Swithin, we're hoping these so-called “camps” will disappear into the ether very soon. Elizabeth Zion is the youngest of my Changemakers so far – at only 19 she's been using her voice for the last few years to talk about family reunification. She serves on the global youth advisory board for UNICEF and currently works on the LIFT Ireland catalyst team, whose focus is building leadership skills in young people. She studies politics, international relations and social justice at the University College Dublin. We have heard more and more over recent years about people seeking asylum or being displaced due to unrest in their home country but we hear less about stories like Elizabeth's. As you'll hear, her mother fled Nigeria while still pregnant with Elizabeth and with her 4 siblings, all very young at the time, Her father was willing to come with them and support his family but even as of recording he has not been able to secure visa application approval and they have had to make do with a visit every few years and phone contact. As you can imagine this has had a massive emotional toll on the whole family but also on their ability to truly settle here and contribute fully to society at times, so even on an economic level, this doesn't make any sense. Elizabeth and her family have found themselves homeless and have been tested more than many but she is grateful for the struggle which has taught her about what is important in life and she is determined to speak up for people in situations like hers, who might not have found the strength she has.We talk about the effect of a broken home on a child and of course we live in a time when the shape of a family has changed, people can grow up with one parent for a variety of reasons and flourish. This is a different situation, a family who want to be together but can't because of a set of circumstances, not of their making, which they cannot control. We talk about the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child which recognises childhood is a special, protected time, in which children must be allowed to grow, learn, play, develop and flourish with dignity. It goes on to cite the importance of parents and family in this protection and that children have a right to family life. Elizabeth is calling for these rights to be prioritised and taken into account with visa applications. For more on Elizabeth Zion click hereView her Ted Talk here Hosted on Acast. Our guests on the Breakfast Show this morning were Amber Schulz and Francesca Tavanti from the LFR. They joined Tom to discuss the main issues concerning the integration of refugees and assylum seekers upon arrival in Luxembourg, which were identified at the press conference held by LFR on the occasion of world refugee day. LFR is a collective of organisations that are involved in protecting the rights of refugees. Amber and Francesca work for Passarell and Ryse respectively. At the press conference the four main issues identified by LFR concerning the process of refugee's integration into society in Luxembourg were: - Access to the labor market, - Access to studies, - Family Reunification, - Access to housing. Each of these areas currently involves complicated processes and legislation that often leave refugees with the inability to provide the correct documentation to fulfill their applications. Amber and Francesca confirmed that the government was receptive to the calls made by LFR but that there was still a lot of work to do to resolve the issues that had been highlighted by the group.

Trigger Warning: please be advised there is detailed discussion about assault and abuse of minors. What does a parent do when they feel like their child is in danger and is looking for help? They jump on the internet and start clicking. What they might find is a bunch of info about places all over the country they can send their kid to for rehabilitation and family unification. Sounds great, right? What they might not know, though, is that these places are unlicensed, unregulated, off the oversight grid and very often abusive. In fact, influencer Paris Hilton went before the Utah state congress last year to share her traumatic experience at The Provo Canyon School. It was a great pleasure to be joined in the tortoise shack by Dr Arsalan Shahid. We discuss how he came from Pakistan to Ireland in 2016, had to give up his ambition to become a surgeon because of our non-training of immigrant doctors, was married in early 2020 and how now, after an earlier miscarriage, he and his lovely wife Namra Javed are due their first child any day now. All of this would be a time for celebration except the Irish state has refused a visa to Namra's mother a 3 month visa to help them after the birth of the baby. This is a cruel and ludicrous situation and we're urging you all to ask Minister Helen McEntee to intervene here. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East, and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Today's panel comprises our health reporter Nathan Jeffay and Palestinian Affairs correspondent Aaron Boxerman, along with host Amanda Borschel-Dan. Israel is experiencing a minor surge in COVID cases. We discuss what the origins are and just how worrying this is. Over the weekend Israel and the Palestinian Authority inked a deal with Pfizer for the transfer of some 1.4 million COVID vaccines to be transferred from Israel to the PA. However, quickly after its announcement, the Palestinians rejected the short-dated shots. What's happening now? Equally controversial is the Family Reunification amendment to the Citizenship bill, which was slated for a vote this week. Boxerman gives background on the 2003 amendment which limits citizenship for Palestinians married to Israeli Arabs and explains what's at stake now. And finally, we hear about interesting new research reaffirming the linkage of Vitamin D deficiency with poor results for those infected with the coronavirus. Discussed articles include: Government orders stepped-up COVID screening at airport, quarantine inspections As virus infection rate rises once more, health experts say: Don't panic PA says it wants to renegotiate terms of vaccine deal with Israel, Pfizer Three countries said to ask Israel for vaccine doses Palestinians don't want Lacking a majority, vote to extend Palestinian family reunification ban delayed 1 in 4 COVID patients hospitalized while vitamin D deficient die – Israeli study Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Four months into the Biden administration's efforts to reunite migrant families who were separated at the border during the Trump administration, a total of three dozen families have been cleared to be reunified in the United States. That's a tiny fraction of the thousands of families who remain apart, and immigrant advocates who have been pushing for their reunification for years say not enough is being done to right a massive injustice. President Biden campaigned on some big immigration promises. One he talked about often was to reunite the thousands of families who got separated because of former president Trump's zero-tolerance immigration policy. Now, as President Biden sets up his task force to tackle the issue, many groups including the America Civil Liberties Union are asking his administration to go one step further and let those families stay in the U.S. Plus, impeachment and Trump’s legacy. Our podcast turns to a paper from Marco Di Feo, Vita-Salute San Raffaele University of Milan. The recording is taken from our 2019 Annual Conference, ‘The Theory and Practice of Phenomenology’. ABSTRACT: All people, to the extent that they wish, have the right to be fully integrated into the social world in which they live, regardless of their institutional status (citizen, immigrant, refugee, etc.). The integration is a very complex process, which includes at least three essential levels of the social life: the community one, that is, the level of interpersonal bonds (i.e. sentimental, friendship, etc.); the territorial one, that is, the level of social interactions (i.e those that depend on a social role, or a profession, etc.); and the political one, that is, the possibility of taking part in the collective political life (expressing opinions, voting, etc.). The phenomenological analysis of the essential forms of social interaction shows the peculiarity of each different level of integration. The crucial point on which I intend to pay attention is the following: each democratic country that welcomes an immigrant must create the conditions for her/his fully successful social integration. The hospitality of the immigrants is intrinsically connected to the duty of making them members of the society, at all three levels of the social life. I specifically intend to deal the theme of family reunifications within this conceptual horizon. Since family ties are the central nucleus of the community weaving, and since every person has the right to live in relation to her own reference community context, then the family reunification must be considered an inalienable right of every person who is welcomed in a new country. This right cannot be subordinated to any other type of evaluation, of economic, bureaucratic or political nature, because it is a human right. Only by guaranteeing a family context of belonging, institutions can avoid situations of social degradation, which are linked to conditions of loneliness and social isolation. BIO: I was born in Milan, Italy, 46 years ago. Philosophy has always been my passion, but before dedicating myself to it, I felt the need to grow. I worked in a bank; then I changed radically my life, going to work in a social farm. Ten years ago I moved to Switzerland to work as social worker. During these years I achieved my degree with a thesis on the collective subjects from a phenomenological perspective. Actually I am working with young refugees and ending my second year of PhD. In my life path work and study are linked and grow together. A growing push to expand the availability of medical marijuana is taking place in conservative rural Texas, of all places, and the effects of the ongoing drive are likely to show up in the legislative session next year. Voters in Oklahoma recently approved one of the most permissive medical-marijuana laws, allowing patients with state licenses to keep eight ounces in their homes and carry three ounces on with them. They can also possess up to 12 marijuana plants. Texas, where marijuana is still thought of in many places as "hippie dope" from the 1960s, has been slow to embrace the concept of medical marijuana, and only approved it for limited conditions in the 2017 legislative session -- long after more than two dozen other states had embraced it for medical treatments. Just as elusive may be whether many of Texas' statewide candidates will face each other in debates before the November general election, except for the U.S. Senate race where incumbent Republican Ted Cruz is actively promoting several face-offs with challenger Beto O'Rourke. Similarly elusive are the details of what, if anything, took place when Houston-area U.S. Rep. Randy Weber met with accused Russian spy Maria Butina, among a group of Russian officials, in 2015. Butina was recently indicted on allegations she spied for Russia. The rest of the political week: New skirmishes in court over DACA, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick pronounces so-called "red flag" legislation to restrict gun ownership to be DOA in the state Senate next year and how politics are playing out for Republican incumbents in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. In his State of the Union address Tuesday night, Trump again called for restrictions on what he calls "chain migration." Such restrictions would hit Asians and Mexicans particularly hard.
In this episode of Cornerstones Cares, we talk with Dusty Scheiter and Carla McCarty about the Family Reunification Services (FRS) program. Parenthood isn’t always easy and we understand that sometimes families need additional support. Our home-based prevention teams work tirelessly to prevent the separation of families. Many families and individuals in these programs have a history of trauma, abuse and/or neglect, intimate partner violence, mental health challenges and/or substance abuse issues. We recognize the need to break the cycle, and our Intensive In-Home Services (IIS) serves families whose children are at immediate risk of being removed from the home by working intensely in the home to keep them safely together.
April is Child Abuse Awareness Month. Join me and my special guest Kim from Hannah's Children Homes and Dr. Lisa Romain as we discuss and educate individuals regarding Child Abuse which consist of physical, sexual, psychological, neglect, and emotional abuse. The term child abuse and child maltreatment are often used interchangeably. However there is a distinction between them. Different states have different laws however the aftermath can last a very long time. Did you know that every ten seconds a report is made about a child being abused? And about four children die every year as a result of abuse. It is also known that many children are being horribly mistreated every day by adults who are meant to love and care for them. With that being said the effects can last well into adulthood especially without intervention leading to depression, anxiety, disassociation, PTSD, eating disorders, addiction, suicidial thoughts, personality or attachment disorders. The show is not designed to make parents feel bad. The goal is to teach individuals how to recognize the signs and symptoms, provide information regarding the courts, social services responsibilities, court referred programs and community resources. Let's put an end to Child Abuse. I understand that times have changed and many still believe that a good whoopin did not kill anyone. Yet today many parents are losing custody of their children. Children are confused and becoming angry at their parents. The Courts and Social Services are struggling to figure out what to do. And the Aftermath of abuse is effecting individuals in many ways including their relationships. If you have something to share call 516 387-1914 to share your experience or a creative solution to this issue.
