The two episodes in this series are a recording of a long conversation Sascha and I had whilst sitting in a mountain house in Georgia. Over coffee and tiny supermarket donuts we talked for (literal) hours about our maternal lines: where our mothers' people came from, the gifts and challenges of their particular nests, how they sent their young ones out into the world. We wonder about fledging - how a strong and functional flock gets formed.In episode one we go deep into our stories. Included are such topics as: logging camps in Florida, supermarket chains, voyages across the Atlantic and miracles of various types. In part two of this series Sascha and I talk about the concept of fledging more generally: what happens when we're tossed from our nest into inhospitable landscapes? Has the goal always been to send our young ones off to better worlds? What happens when we stayed close and built something complex nearby each other? We also think about the many ways we've thrown ourselves from nests - the ways we've found ourselves too large and crowded and bravely leaped for spaces that might hold more of us more completely. 

What initially was intended to be a beautiful conversational episode between us this week was not to be as our audio recorder only got the first 3 minutes of our hour long conversation and this plays into our back to back solo series we decided to do instead. A lot has been going on in both of our lives recently and we've had some hard decisions to make in business and navigating a lot of uncertainty. This is the first time we've ever taken a step back instead of pushing through and we want to discuss why and how this applies to you. In Part 1, Lauren will share her recent struggles with uncertainty and surrendering to what's meant to be. ITRC's HCB-2 focuses on the ecology, toxin production, management, and mitigation of benthic HCBs and is a companion document to the HCB-1 document released by ITRC in March 2021. Cyanobacteria are microscopic, photosynthetic organisms that can be found naturally in all aquatic systems. Under certain conditions, cyanobacteria can multiply and become very abundant, discoloring the water throughout a water body, or accumulating at the surface. These occurrences are known as "harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs)." HCBs can occur in many parts of a water body. Planktonic HCBs occur when cyanobacteria dominate the open water of water bodies. ITRC's HCB-1 guidance includes information about planktonic HCBs. In addition to being suspended in the open water, some cyanobacterial species grow attached to surfaces in a water body. These attached cyanobacteria can grow at the bottom of a water body (benthic zone) but may also be found nearer to the surface growing on submerged vegetation or woody debris. My Guest today is a true legend who is one of only three people to have served at all of the roles in LAPD D-Platoon Chief Mike Albanese. The ITRC Vapor Intrusion Mitigation Team (VIMT) created ten fact sheets, 16 technology information sheets, and 4 checklists with the goal of assisting regulators during review of vapor intrusion mitigation systems, and helping contractors understand the essential elements of planning, design, implementation, and operation, maintenance and monitoring (OM&M) of mitigation systems. After the Vapor Intrusion Mitigation series, you should understand:How to locate and utilize the VIM-1 fact sheets, technology information sheets, and checklistsThe importance of a VI mitigation conceptual site modelHow public outreach for VI mitigation differs from other environmental mattersWhen to implement rapid response for vapor intrusion and applicable methodologies The differences between remediation, mitigation, and institutional controlsAvailable technologies for active and passive mitigation, and design considerations for various approachesHow/when/why different mitigation technologies are appropriateHow to verify mitigation system success, address underperformance, and develop a plan for discontinuing a mitigation system We encourage you to use the ITRC Vapor Intrusion Mitigation work products (VIM-1) and these training modules to learn about vapor intrusion mitigation and how you can apply these best practices to improve decision-making at your sites. For regulators and other government agency staff, this understanding of vapor intrusion mitigation can be incorporated into your own programs. While the training makes every effort to keep the information accessible to a wide audience, it is assumed that the participants will have some basic technical understanding of chemistry, environmental sciences, and risk assessment. As with other emerging contaminants, our understanding of vapor intrusion mitigation continues to advance. This training provides the participants with information on areas where the science is evolving and where uncertainty persists. This Part Two of a Two Part Series on my viewing of The Power. You can read Part One here. Here's Part Two: Since I started writing this, I've watched more episodes – which hasn't really improved my opinion of the show, though I am grateful that it has shifted out of exposition and into stuff happening. But as stuff happens, characters keep saying, “This is going to change the world.” And while I understand that people really do say that in the midst of crisis, as I'm sure we all heard a lot of it in 2020 – it is actually really irritating to hear in a show. Don't tell me this thing is going to change the world; Just show me the world changing or changed, as the book did. Maybe it's having lived through these last years but hearing that the world is going to be changed by a thing that some writers made up just rings sort of hollow somehow. “Hey everyone – in this universe we just made up, everyone is growing a tentacle out of their chest! It's going to change the world!” I hope so! That's why I'm watching this show, to see what a world where people grow tentacles would look like. I don't need to know why they grew them.
