There are some catchy songs, plus Magnifico has some decent classic Disney villain vibes. And you can't go wrong with Alan Tudyk's Valentino. After decades of progress, and at a time Nissan were going to make their next step forward with the luxury Infiniti brand, Nissan's Figaro was in a sense a next evolution in car design, in progress, but at the same time it was an exercise in looking back, of taking stock of just how far Nissan had come. It was also a conscious effort by its designers to push against progress with something more gentle and organic. But the Figaro didn't come out of a vacuum. It was the culmination of several years of new design thinking. So, how popular was the “organic” Figaro in its native Japan, and how has it found a new home on the other side of the planet?

An illuminating deep-dive into everything Fleetwood Mac--the songs, the rivalries, the successes, and the failures—Dreams: The Many Lives of Fleetwood Mac (Pegasus Books, 2024) evokes the band's entire musical catalog as well as the complex human drama at the heart of the Fleetwood Mac story. Fleetwood Mac has had a ground-breaking career spanning over fifty years and includes some of the best-selling albums and greatest hits of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. But the band's unique story is one of enormous triumph and also deep tragedy. There has never been a band in the history of music riven with as much romantic drama, sexual tension, and incredible highs and lows as Fleetwood Mac. Dreams is a must-read for casual Fleetwood Mac fans and die-hard devotees alike. Presenting mini-biographies, observations, and essays, Mark Blake explores all eras of the Fleetwood Mac story to explore what it is that has made them one of the most successful bands in history. Blake draws on his own exclusive interviews with Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, and the late Peter Green and Christine McVie, and addresses the complex human drama at the heart of the Fleetwood Mac story, including the complicated relationships between the band's main members, but he also dives deep into the towering discography that the band has built over the past half-century. Among Mark Blake's previous books are Magnifico!: The A to Z of Queen; the bestselling Comfortably Numb: The Inside Story of Pink Floyd; and Bring It On Home: Peter Grant, Led Zeppelin and Beyond, which was listed as a "Music Book of the Year" by the London Times, the Sunday Times, the Daily Mail, and the Daily Telegraph.
What is King Magnifico's backstory? I mean long before Magnifico unleashed forbidden magic, brought the Kingdom of Rosas to its knees, and transformed into a true Disney Villain, where did he come from? What motivated him to build a kingdom and to study magic? And why was he driven to become a villain? I'm going to answer all of these questions and more as we break down all of the hidden complexities behind the vein, ruthless, and powerful: King Magnifico. To celebrate Disney's computer-animated film musical Wish (Chris Buck & Fawn Veerasunthorn, 2023) and the company's recent centenary year, Chris and Alex are joined by Dr Robyn Muir, Lecturer in Media and Communication in the Department of Sociology at the University of Surrey. Robyn's research is interested in how identity is constructed and interpreted within cultural phenomena, including images of femininity in the Disney Princess franchise. Her book The Disney Princess Phenomenon: A Feminist Analysis (2023) explores Disney's princess films, merchandise, and consumer experiences to account for the cultural pervasiveness and political power of Disney princesses, and to map their wider representations within society. Robyn is also the founder and director of the Disney, Culture and Society Research Network, an international and interdisciplinary space for Disney Studies scholars, and co-founder and co-editor of The International Journal of Disney Studies. Listen as they discuss Wish's identity as nostalgic evocation of Walt Disney animation and tie-ins with the recent Disney100 Exhibition and Once Upon a Studio (Dan Abraham & Trent Correy, 2023) cartoon short; magic, Magnifico, and tensions between community desire and individual wish fulfilment; the gendered exceptionality of Asha as a woman of colour; power and the ‘imagined community' of Rosas; the film's hybrid aesthetic of cel- and computer-animated techniques; and the role of fantasy in providing the schema to know what to wish for. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

In this episode of Casual Chats, Patricia and special guest Arun Mehta from The Arun Mehta Show discuss about the 2023 Disney animated film Wish, a milestone movie to celebrate Disney's 100th anniversary. A young teenage girl named Asha lives in an island called Kingdom of Rosas led by a sorcerer named King Magnifico and his wife Queen Amaya. Every month, King Magnifico grants a citizen a wish that they give him to have it hopefully come true. Asha wants to have her grandfather's wish come true in honor of his 100th birthday, so she hopes to be hired by the king to be his apprentice for a closer shot at it. When it doesn't work out, she wishes on a star and brings about a new source of magic. Magnifico feels threatened by the new magic source and wishes to find it before the other citizens uses it instead of himself. When the film premiered in theaters, it made $128 million dollars out of a $200 million dollar budget making it a box office failure. It had received mixed to negative reviews from critics and viewers saying that the film was too safe with its story, characters, songs, and blatant Easter eggs and homages. What did Arun and Patricia think of the film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/old-school-lane/support

Philip and Jodi review 'Wish', the 62nd animated feature from Walt Disney Animation Studios. 'Wish' continues a legacy that is currently being celebrated in the Walt Disney Company's 100-year anniversary as the foundation upon which the rest of the company is built. The Disney Empire has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1923 as a company set up by Walt and Roy Disney to produce short cartoons. The role of animation as the core of the company has fluctuated significantly, from nearly seeing the animation division shut down in the mid-eighties to the highs of the nineties Renaissance. Despite a post-Covid, post-Disney+ cooling at the box office, Disney Animation continues its output of blockbuster-level films with a story inspired by the Wishing Star referenced in the company logo and theme song, "When You Wish Upon a Star." In 'Wish' we follow Asha, a new heroine who aspires to apprentice under the benevolent sorcerer-king Magnifico, who has power over wishes. The purity of one of Asha's wishes outshines Magnifico's power and makes him envious, sending an idyllic kingdom into a precarious state of discontent as it suffers under increasingly evil and despotic rule.
