Island Theatre cofounders Kate Meyers and Steve Stolee discuss the origins and history of Island Theatre, the company's evolution from a more-or-less conventional community theater, to finding a niche with a small room, on-book performances, and the annual Ten Minute Play Festival. Friends for nearly forty years, Steve and Kate will also share stories of the local theatre scene in the eighties, including their first exposure to the community, the Susie Glass Burdick production of Grease, and how it led to an international musical theatre collaboration with a theatre company in Siberia. ABOUT ISLAND THEATRE Incorporated in 1994, Island Theatre is a 501(c)3 non-profit community theater company in Bainbridge Island, Washington. Specializing in theatrical presentations mainly by and for adults, it has three main performing components: Island Theatre At The Library, a bi-monthly series of on-book performances at the Bainbridge Library; Island Theatre At Your House (YoHo), a bi-monthly series of open play readings hosted in private homes; and Island Theatre Ten-Minute Play Festival, an annual juried short play invitational and presentation of selected plays held at Bainbridge Performing Arts. KATE MEYERS Kate received her B.A. in Theatre from Washington State University and first set foot on BPA’s stage almost 35 years ago. Kate cherishes the many roles she has played at BPA since then, from backstage crew to actor, board member (co-chairing the initial Capital Campaign to build BPA’s playhouse), and Director.  Onstage, Kate has played roles in Grease, Marvin’s Room, Blithe Spirit, The Butler Did It, and You Can’t Take it With You.  Her directing credits at BPA have ranged from the classical (Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing) to comedic (Art; Picasso at the Lapin Agile), dramatic (The Kentucky Cycle, Snow Falling on Cedars, The Grapes of Wrath, Amadeus, Arcadia), and – more recently – to contemporary “dramedies” (The Revolutionists, August: Osage County). Kate’s plays often take deep dives into the human condition, examining history, culture, and the importance of family. Several have contemplated art and the nature of artistic genius, as well as quantum physics, and even time travel.   STEVE STOLEE Steve Stolee is a freelance photographer, videographer, graphic designer, Bainbridge Islander since 1979, and a BFA from U.W. School of Art. He is a cofounder of Island Theatre and managing Director of the I.T. Ten-Minute Play Festival; a 2019 recipient of the Island Treasure Award for Arts and Humanities, cofounder of The Picture Project, and creator of the documentary film, “Another Man’s Treasure,” a story about the biggest rummage sale in the world. An honest man and a hell of a nice guy, he proudly claims to have danced with the great Cloris Leachman at the Port Townsend Film Festival.

How do you capture a storm on canvas? Artist Joanie Klorer grew up in Tornado Alley, and after a career helping others find therapeutic resolution through art she's carried her own awareness of time, place, and storms into abstract paintings she'll share at the Bainbridge Island Library for the month of July. During her nearly four decades as a social worker, Joanie found art was a great way to help people -- especially non-verbal clients -- express their hearts and experiences. Today she uses her art to achieve the same objective for herself, drawing on her experience of those childhood storms to feed her paintings  “I think of memory as a shadow which lingers from encounters and places.  Memory, influenced by time, place, and experience forms the catalyst for my paintings.  I believe my paintings are often an attempt at resolution of memories that are stuck like films on continuous replay.”  Joanie's exhibit, entitled "Where I Come From: Memory and Place," will open during the First Friday Arts Walk at the Bainbridge Public Library on July 5th from 5-7 pm. Curious about the artist behind the new murals in the ferry terminal? Meet Cynthia Lait when her new exhibit opens at the Bainbridge Island Library on Friday Evening, April 5th. Ever since Cynthia Lait can remember, she’s been creating art. From drawing horses as a child, to rising early as a young mother to get some studio time before getting her kids off to school and herself to work to her current situation of having her studio set up the way she likes it, Cynthia likes to be creative. She took the occasional art class in high school, but when it came time for college she chose to become a chemical engineer, a degree that informs her creativity process more than one would think. With her children now grown she now has time for a more serious studio practice. She’s inspired by nature; memories of a walk in the woods, playing at the beach. She’s inspired by movement; the changes in color and shape as an object moves. And she’s inspired by patterns; the evident and not-so-evident, the beginnings, middles and endings. For her collage work she paints Japanese papers with vibrant colors then cuts, arranges and re-arranges these pieces of paper until it resonates. She likes the definition of the clean edges so that the work takes on more graphical style. Come meet Cynthia at the Bainbridge Library when her show opens Friday, April 5, from 5:30 to 7 pm. Art is the act of celebrating that of being alive.  To accomplish artwork requires awareness, contemplation, receptiveness, courage, skill, tools and an idea. In my work I'm trying to capture something specific in the people, landscape, or the still life Come see John's movement-inspired abstract monotypes at the Bainbridge Library, opening Friday, June 1 from 5-7 pm. Some of the women are well-known, others less so, but each story about their lives made them very real and impressive. There is always a need for people to speak up when they see inequality," adds Ruys. If you're a fan of the abstract expressionists of the mid-twentieth century, you'll want to check out the art of Curtis Hughes, whose work will open at the Bainbridge Library at 5 pm on February 2nd as part of the First Friday Art Walk. Still in his first year as a painter after a lifelong career as a designer, Curtis created this series of 11 paintings as an exploration of the methods and spirit of modern design and, in particular, such abstract expressionists as Franz Kline, Helen Frankenthaler, and Willem deKooning. The paintings are spare and expressive, done mostly in black and white, with color used primarily as a value of black and white. The paintings are deliberately rough and unpolished and are intended to reach for emotional immediacy on the part of the artist and viewer alike. Listen here to hear the story of Hughes' evolution as an artist, and how he first encountered the art which has so influenced him. Bainbridge Island is a community that loves its library, and library users have a treat in store when this year's "Refresh" project expands the library's meeting room and improves its facilities -- in keeping with their slogan "A vibrant space for everyone". In this 16-minute podcast conversation, Bainbridge Branch Manager Rebecca Judd and Bainbridge Public Library board president Eric Petersen describe how excited they are about the improvements that will be constructed this year, between March and this Fall. The Library will remain open throughout the construction project. Some services will move around the building as the project proceeds. To keep up with the changes, check the Bainbridge Library website and the KRL Bainbridge branch website that describes library services and events. They explain our Library's innovative working relationship -- a public-private partnership -- between the Kitsap Regional Library system for staffing and services that we support through local tax levies, and the private nonprofit Bainbridge Public Library that thrives on local donations for the ownership, maintenance and operation of our library building. Eric describes the funding of this $1.2 million improvement -- with about $1 million coming from contributed dollars accumulated over the years in the Library's reserves, plus $100,000 coming from a major Bainbridge Rotary Club donation from proceeds of the annual Rummage Sale. It was the first Rotary rummage sale almost 60 years ago that produced the funds to initially build the Library. Other large funding sources include Friends of the Library Book Sales, and grants from Bainbridge Community Foundation and Kitsap Community Foundation. Dollars from local citizens in the One Call for All red envelope campaigns are also vital for annual building operations. Pacific Heights Construction (PHC), which built the LEED energy award-winning Art Museum and the green-built Grow Community, won the construction contract. From BCB... http://bestofbcb.org/wu-227-pete-seeger-at-library/ Whether you like to carry a protest sign or just carry a tune, you'll want to mark your calendar for “PETE SEEGER: THE MAN AND THE MUSIC.”   Seeger, who passed away in 2014 at the age of 94, was an iconic presence in the 20th century American music landscape. During his 70-year career, Seeger was admired by many and criticized by others for his activism on issues of labor, war, civil rights, and the environment. The singer roamed America, singing on street corners and in saloons, migrant labor camps, hobo jungles, union halls, schools, churches and concert auditoriums. Pacific Northwest musical duo Hank and Claire have put together a program that illustrates through story and song the connections between Seeger's personal story and the social justice issues that inspired his music. In addition to stories about his life, each phase of Seeger's activism will be highlighted with songs he wrote and/or popularized. Listeners will gain a deeper understanding of the meaning behind such classics as “Where Have all the Flowers Gone?” and “Turn, Turn, Turn.” Start warming up your vocal cords, because singing along is, of course, encouraged. Diane Bonciolini and Gregg Mesmer have been making beautiful glass together as Mesolini since 1977.  Earlier this year, they were named Island Treasures for 2015 by the Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council. Their familiar installations -- the Beach Glass Quilt on Winslow Way; the artwork at Rotary Centennial Park; and the installations at the Bainbridge Library and at The Waypoint across from the Art Museum -- are easily recognizable for their signature fused glass style. For Diane and Gregg, their community spirit is evident in all they do -- from teaching and coaching at the public schools to leading the glass workers at the Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network (BARN). Each of them has contributed many hours and materials to our schools, designing murals and teaching kids the joy of working together creatively.  They have introduced scores of people to the art of glass through classes and joint community projects. On Thursday July 17th (note this revised date), you can attend an informational meeting about opportunities for improved high-speed internet connectivity for your neighborhood on Bainbridge Island. The meeting is at the Bainbridge Library, starting at 7:15pm. If you think that Comcast and CenturyLink are the only choices on our island for wired internet for home or office, here's some good news. There's a third choice -- and it's a local public-service nonprofit called Kitsap Public Utility District (KPUD). For more than a decade, KPUD has successfully and economically provided high-speed broadband fiber optic internet service to our Bainbridge schools, Fire Department, Police Department, City Hall and Bainbridge Library, and a few businesses, in cooperation with a retail partner. Now they're ready to work with us to fund, construct and maintain fast competitive internet service to Bainbridge residential neighborhoods and business districts. They can either replace existing unsatisfactory slow service, or they can construct wired or other effective service to neighborhoods not currently served by high-speed internet. And, besides ISP business retailers, they are willing to work with a cost-effective nonprofit co-op to retail that service to you and your neighbors. At the July 17th public meeting, the main speaker will be Dave Siburg, General Manager of KPUD. Also meet some Bainbridge residents who are currently actively considering a fiber optic internet installation project with KPUD and a nonprofit retailer. KPUD has the ability to finance fiber optic infrastructure with low-interest municipal bonds repayable over 20 years.  That's a sharp contrast to corporate internet providers that are reluctant to bring new or improved service to a neighborhood unless it can financially repay them with profits within a few years. Island Theatre at the Bainbridge Library will present "Circle Mirror Transformation" by playwright Annie Baker, on June 21 and 22 at 7:30 pm.  There is no charge for the event. The dramatic reading is directed by Rozzella Kolbegger, who is interviewed in this podcast by BCB's Lyssa Danehy deHart. Island Theatre at the Library is a performance series held bi-monthly on the third Saturday and Sunday of the performance months of February, April, June, October and December. These performances are presented in a stripped down staging with script in hand and a minimum of production (i.e., costumes, sets, props) to concentrate on the literature of the dramatic canon, both modern and classic. The contained space and immediacy of the drama has an intensity that rivals fully produced presentations. In this podcast, Rozella Kolbeggar explains that Circle Mirror Transformation takes place in an artsy small town. There, an unlikely collection of four strangers sign up for Marty's "Adult Creative Drama" class -- a recently divorced carpenter, a high school junior, a former actress, and Marty's husband. Unfolding like a charmingly funny indie film, the group plays Marty's imaginative (and sometimes awkward) theatre games. But as their relationships develop over the course of the summer, the seemingly silly games generate some real-life drama. This delightful play from new playwright Annie Baker landed on Top Ten lists of The New York Times and The New Yorker for 2010. In this podcast, Rotary member Tom McCloskey, who is the Chair of this year's Rotary Auction and Rummage Sale, recounts the history, scale and scope of this remarkable annual event, now in its 54th year. Tom points out that -- while the event is managed and maintained by the Rotary Club - it has become a true community-wide event. During the upcoming 11-day period, 116 Rotarians and about 1,100 other volunteers will prepare, physically work, manage, clean up and follow up.  Five to ten thousand customers are expected at the six-hour event from 8am to 2pm on Saturday June 28th.  Purchased goods may be picked up that day by vehicle between 10am and 3pm. To plan your Saturday shopping, attend the open preview night on Friday the 27th from 5-8pm. Meanwhile, starting on Friday, June 20th, you can drop off your donated goods at the Woodward Middle School.  Use the south entrance on Sportsmen Club Road between 8am and 8pm during the six days through Wednesday June 25th. Approximately 150,000 items -- some as small as toothpicks and others as large as donated cars and boats -- are expected. Proceeds of the event will fund the Rotary's annual community grants to nonprofits, plus large-scale community grants (like the Waypoint project that transformed the corner of Winslow Way and route 305). In addition, the proceeds will fund scholarships to High School students, donations to international humanitarian projects, and other worthy causes. Our BCB radio project itself was a benefactor of a $7,000 portion of last year's nearly $445,000 in Rotary proceeds in the form of a grant to our local nonprofit parent, Sustainable Bainbridge. The cumulative proceeds from 54 years of Rotary Auctions is likely to pass the $6 million level this year.  Tom points out that the first of those auctions generated dollars that helped acquire land for the Bainbridge Library. In this podcast, Tom McCloskey points out that many Bainbridge Islanders consider the Rotary Auction to be a way of taking care of their household "Spring Cleaning" while truly benefiting their community.
