Time for a new Comic Book Bears Podcast audio episode!  Steve, Caleb and Billy Z reconvene for two hours of four color funnybook talk! On the docket this time are a few news items (Diamond's bankruptcy, Marvel Studios not inviting Rob Liefeld to an afterparty) followed by a half dozen books we wanted to spotlight. Hit play and hear about what we thought of the inaugural issues of a few new series: Aquaman (DC), West Coast Avengers (Marvel), Lawful (Boom!) and The Death of COPRA (Image). We also chat about Tim Bird's autobiographical graphic novel Adrift in a Painted Sea (Avery Hill Publishers) and DC's tabloid reprinting of the 1980 Untold Legend of The Batman mini-series. Also, please note that this episode was recorded at the beginning of the month and as 2/3rds of the team here are huge football fans we offer up what were our Super Bowl LIX predictions. It's the story of -- or perhaps a better way of putting would be that it's a history or a meditation on -- an area in South London known for its wooded past. This includes areas such as Norwood, Gipsy Hill, Honor Oak, and Sydenham Hill Woods. In fact, as Tim mentions in the interview, Sydenham Hill Woods is really the last vestige of the heavily forested area south of London, and it's where Tim and his family currently reside. What makes The Great North Woodstand out is Tim Bird's use of geographic space to tell his story. As he and Derek discuss over the course of their conversation, character is at a minimum in Tim's work, and he uses location and space to carry his narrative. What's more, the creator often underscores the mystery and magic that has traditionally been a part of Britain's wooded areas. Much of Derek's talk with Tim centers on the new book, but they also discuss his previous comics, such as the various works in his Grey Areaseries, also published by Avery Hill. These are also largely based on location and geographic space, and Tim goes into detail about his evolution as an artist, working through his Grey Areacomics to get to a place where he can more fully explore his surroundings in his latest book.

Have you ever wondered what life on Bainbridge Island was like, back before the Agate Pass Bridge and the commuter ferries? Wouldn't you like to hear about that directly from the folks who lived here back then? If you know some of those people, or would like to hear their stories and help others to do the same, this podcast is for you! The Bainbridge Island Historical Museum is developing an oral history project, and they need your help. In this podcast you'll meet the Museum's volunteer coordinator, Tim Bird, and Tom Arnold, a retired naval officer who's finishing up a masters in oral history, and who ran an oral history project for the city of Lawrence, Kansas before moving to Bainbridge. The museum, which will be working with the Senior Center, BCB, and other interested organizations, hopes to begin the project by focusing on conversations with Bainbridge Islanders who lived here during the 30's and 40's. They're looking for people to help with the project, either to introduce them to prospective interviewees, or to help conduct, record, edit and/or transcribe the interviews so they can become part of the museum's permanent collection. Because the museum already has several interviews on file, BCB will join in the project by offering occasional excerpts to give our listeners a flavor of Bainbridge as it once was. If you're interested in participating in this community-wide project, please visit the BIHM website, http://bainbridgehistory.org/, or you can drop by or call the museum any day of the week between 10 and 4. In this podcast, Paul talks with BCB host Channie Peters about how he was able to photograph and observe the Northern Pygmy, Burrowing, Great Gray, and Snowy Owls throughout the course of a year in each of their different natural habitats. He explains the importance of understanding these indicator species as a way of understanding our bigger environment and our interconnected web of existence. Conductor and Music Director Wes Schulz talks about the four upcoming concerts in our local orchestra's new 2016-17 season, its 44th. Each concert will be totally unique to Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra, and never before performed here. The season kicks off on the evenings of November 12th and 13th with “The British are Coming.” The music comes from three great English composers - William Walton, Vaughan Williams, and Elgar - with “resplendent orchestration, grandeur, and pomp” (as only the British can do it). Particularly unique and special will be the second concert, Mahler's Symphony #1, which will be performed in March by Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra together with the orchestra of the University of Puget Sound. The performance of that symphony requires a large number of instruments and musicians, so the combining of these two orchestras will bring us a spectacular performance. Each of the two Mahler performances will be off-site - at the Bainbridge High School on March 4th, and at the University of Puget Sound campus on March 5th. In this podcast, Wes also provides some insight into the creative process of how a symphony concert comes together. In this podcast, author Pete Fromm talks with Eagle Harbor Book Company's Victoria Irwin, and with BCB host Channie Peters, about his new memoir. He'll be at Eagle Harbor Books on Friday, October 14th, 1-2 pm, for what promises to be a fascinating lunchtime talk. His new memoir "Names of the Stars: A Life in the Wilds" is most definitely not a sequel to Indian Creek Chronicles, written 13 years earlier, though there are superficial similarities. In both cases, we meet a man who goes into the wilderness, alone, to nurture and study fish eggs. But Pete Fromm isn't the same man he was in Indian Creek Chronicles, when he ventured into the wilderness, alone, to babysit salmon eggs for the Fish & Wildlife Service for seven months. Now, he isn't just parenting fish eggs, but also two sons (age 9 and 6). They desperately wanted to go with him but couldn't because of the dangerous neighborhood, with the densest population of grizzly bears in the lower 48. This time, Pete's experiences in the wild are richer, with greater depth, in the context not just of the beauty and risks of wilderness, but also in the context of his emotional depth gained from years of life experiences and relationships. Pete's experiences, both external and internal, and his recounting of them, make him the perfect guest for Eagle Harbor bookstore's brown bag lunch venue, when we can sit down for an informal chat, ask questions, and get to know this personable, thoughtful adventurer and writer. Reservations are not required, but requested so that space and drinks can be thoughtfully planned. Further details are at the Eagle Harbor Books website. Now under the inspired direction of Kate Carruthers, his classic comedy, Much Ado About Nothing,  will be airing at the Reserve July 8-24. Melding styles ranging from Country Twang to Jump Blues and Surf to R&B, the Dusty 45's also use Dixieland and jazz elements -- another high energy band guaranteed to get fans on their feet. The season will close in a more classical mode with quite a coup: on September 4th Dale Henderson, whom Yoyo Ma describes as “a very gifted musician and natural cellist” will perform Bach's gamba sonatas at Bloedel with pianist William Chapman Nyaho.   Henderson initiated the Bach in the Subways movement in March of 2010. Since then it has become an international event, held every March to celebrate Bach's birthday and raise appreciation for classical music.  On March 22, 2015, Bach was played in public places in 130 cities, 40 countries, 6 continents. The three concerts will be in different locations around the Bloedel gardens, where families are invited to bring a picnic and enjoy the music.  Wine and beer from Bainbridge Island Brewing will be sold on the grounds; guests may only consume liquor purchased on site. Gwen and Derek are back with another publisher spotlight episode, this one on the UK press, Avery Hill Publishing. They begin their spotlight with a short interview with the people behind Avery Hill: Ricky Miller, Dave White, and Katriona Chapman. Derek talks with them about the origins of the press, the kind of creators that have come to define Avery Hill, their distribution and publicity outside of the UK, and their plans for fall releases and beyond. After that conversation, Gwen and Derek get into the nitty gritty of the publisher's current offerings. They start by looking at the most recent issues of two ongoing series from Avery Hill, Reads #4 and Metroland #3. The former is an anthology periodical currently in its second volume, and the two discuss its various serialized storylines. Gwen is particularly fond of Owen D. Pomery's "The Megatherium Club," but they also discuss Reads other historically based stories -- Ricky Miller and Tim Bird's "Hitchcock and Film" as well as Bird and Luke James Halsall's "The Bullpen" (inspired by Marvel Comics in the early 1960s) -- and the colorful, offbeat comics of EdieOP. The most recent issue of Metroland continues the drama behind Ricky Miller and Julia Scheele's fictional 1980s band, Electric Dreams, and while discussing this evolving narrative, Derek and Gwen even wax nostalgic over their own musical histories growing up during that time. Next, they discuss three new books released this spring. A City Inside is yet another work from Tillie Walden -- she's become a singular force at Avery Hill -- and this one is a measured, meditative look at self-identity with an almost poetic tone. Rachel Smith's Artificial Flowers does to the London art scene what Miller and Scheele's Metroland does with the city post-punk. Both the artist's unassuming premise and her clean, iconic art style easily draw Gwen and Derek into this fun story. And then finally, the cohosts wrap up with the latest book in Matthew Swan's Parsley Girl series. Neither Derek nor Gwen had been familiar with Swan's work previously, but Parsley Girl: Carrots proves to be a good introduction into his weird and almost psychedelic narrative world. Overall, both Gwen and Derek find a lot of excitement behind this young press. Avery Hill may be just now getting a foothold in the US market -- thanks to its recent distribution agreement with Retrofit/Big Planet -- but as this episode demonstrates, it's definitely a publisher worth watching.

Gary started in his new leadership position with COBI in April. Gary is a listener and is reaching out to meet Bainbridge community members and hear their views and suggestions for the City. He walks to work from his new home in downtown Winslow. He's interested in encouraging citizen involvement in the ongoing 2-year project to update the City's long-term Comprehensive Plan. Gary has 29 years of local government experience, most recently as the manager of the Skagit County planning and development department, and participated in that county's comp plan update and in administration of shoreline issues. Gary has a masters in regional planning from WSU. City Manager Doug Schulze conducted a national search for a successor to Kathy Cook, a 20-year City staff veteran who looked back on her City career in a recent BCB podcast. Several citizen volunteers participated in the review of finalists, as noted by Jon Quitslund in our recent podcast with him. Gary emphasizes that an important leadership quality is the ability to build strong relationships. Rather than solutions coming from one person, he says that an effective planning director understands that you need assistance from others: co-workers, elected officials, and the community. He feels that you need to believe in solving community issues through collaboration and communication, and by being transparent and incorporating effective public participation. He added that the best conceived plans are community inspired. Credits: BCB host and social media publisher: Barry Peters; BCB audio editor: Tim Bird.

In her book and her talk on BI, Lythcott-Haims spoke of academically accomplished students who were poorly equipped to handle adult life on their own.  She noticed that many high school students entering college were over-stressed, over-scheduled, and under-prepared to handle life away from home and parents.   As a follow-up to her informative and motivating talk, the Bainbridge Healthy Youth Alliance, of which Raising Resilience is one of the founding partners, has organized a seminar to: Connect with local teens working on their own culture change project Learn what helps youth develop their own internal guidance system Walk away with specific strategies you can put into immediate action Meet other parents in a fun and engaging learning environment All parents, grandparents, educators, therapists and anyone that touches the lives of youth are invited to attend this hands-on, practical 2-1/2 hour seminar, to be held April 23rd from 10 am to 12:30 in the Bainbridge High School gymnasium. From BCB... http://bestofbcb.org/wu-255-elizabeth-heffrons-portugal/ In this podcast director Kate Carruthers and playwright Elizabeth Heffron talk about Portugal, Heffron's latest play, to be performed Saturday, April 16th, at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art. In Portugal, there's been an accident at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in rural Eastern Washington, “home to America's largest stockpile of unprocessed radioactive nuclear waste and the most contaminated place in the Western Hemisphere.”  (hanfordchallenge.org) Heffron has never shied away from difficult and complicated subjects: in previous plays she has addressed such issues as late-term abortion (Mitzi's Abortion), and the effects of poverty and sexual abuse (Bo-Nita).  In Portugal, this fearless playwright explores the devastating effects of radioactive contamination on workers, the critical problem of radioactive waste disposal, and the predicament of whistleblowers. Listen here to learn why Heffron wanted to write this play, how she researched and gathered the material for it, how she chose her five characters, and about the devices she's used to deal with this difficult subject. You'll also hear Carruthers talk about her experiences directing this play reading, which features local favorites John Ellis, Barbara Deering, Robert Bergen, Elizabeth Ellis, and J.C. In February 2016, the Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Association conferred one of its two 2016 Island Treasure Awards on Cameron Snow. Since she picked up her first camcorder in 2000, painter, sculptor, world traveler and now filmmaker Cameron Snow has produced over a dozen films documenting the life and environment of Bainbridge Island.  Newly designated as one of this year's Island Treasures, Cameron and her diplomat husband, Chris Snow, have lived in many interesting countries, but it wasn't until they chose to retire on Bainbridge Island that she turned her artistic eye as a painter and sculptor to filmmaking.  In the 16 years since she began filming, she has honed her creative talents by producing and directing over a dozen films about the island, including Return of the Plankton, Forest in the City, The Geological Formation of Bainbridge Island, BIMA, Here we go!, Offerings (Exhibition at BIMA), Inner Zoo Outer Orbit (Exhibition at BIMA), the Sakai Family of Bainbridge Island, Leaving our Island Forum Day, and Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra Performs Peter & the Wolf. Listen here as Cameron describes how she first became interested in filmmaking and gives us some insight into the complex process of turning an idea into a full-length film (or three, in the case of the Geological Formation of Bainbridge Island).   Like her first full-length film, Return of the Plankton, and her current work on geological formation, many of her films have contributed to our understanding of our local ecology, and have been used by educators and researchers to study our environment. But she's also made several films about artists and music on Bainbridge Island, sharing her appreciation of this island community's richness in the arts. Despite her new career as a filmmaker, Cameron continues to find time for her painting and sculpture -- and she doesn't see her filmmaking as a departure from the other art forms that have long been part of her life. As she says, everything we've ever done informs whatever we do next.  Fortunately for us on Bainbridge Island, Cameron's curiosity about the environment around her and her artistic skill in representing what she learns will continue to inform, educate and entertain this community for generations. A local group called Raising Resilience is bringIng an acclaimed author to meet Bainbridge parents and high school teens. In this special 20-minute podcast, we meet that dynamic author, Julie Lythcott-Haims, and Cezanne Allen of Raising Resilience. Julie, as a New York Times bestselling author of “How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success”, will be speaking to parents, educators and interested adults on Wednesday, February 3rd at 7:30pm at the Commons auditorium of Bainbridge High School. She will also address students at BHS the following morning. From her 10 years as Dean of Freshmen at Stanford University, Lythcott-Haims noticed a significant increase in parental involvement in students' lives. Parents were exerting increasing control over their children's academic work, extracurricular and career choices, and daily life decision making. She noticed “increasing numbers of students who, as a result of hyperattentive parenting, lacked a strong sense of self and were poorly equipped to handle the demands of adult life.” Such over-involved parenting, affectionately known as “helicopter parents” (for their hovering prowess), has been an evolving phenomena since the Baby Boom generation began raising children. The effect has been kids who feel under pressure to succeed in terms they have not yet defined, but who do not learn life skills to succeed in the most basic ways because their parents have taken care of every little thing. Lythcott-Haims' book offers an alternative to over-parenting, over-helping, over-scheduling. Clearly, her message has resonated strongly across the country since she is frequently asked to speak in communities everywhere, is being interviewed on the Today Show on January 25th, and has done a number of TEDx talks. Raising Resilience and the PTSO are co-sponsoring bringing Julie Lythcott-Haims to Bainbridge Island to speak about the important and valuable lessons we need to hear to help our kids thrive and grow on their own into adept, successful adults.   Register at the Raising Resilience website for what promises to be an inspiring talk. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing that evening. Credits: BCB host: Channie Peters; BCB audio editor: Tim Bird; BCB social media publisher: Barry Peters.

In this podcast, BCB host Channie Peters talks with the book's author, Anita Feng, a raku sculptor and Zen master who has also won the Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry and a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship. Many of us know the story of Siddhartha, the young prince who grew up in India and left his privileged upbringing to seek enlightenment. Like Siddhartha, Feng's hero, Sid, is an ordinary mortal, in this case a privileged young mathematician growing up in Cambridge, Mass. But Sid, too, feels compelled to search for the obstacles to and causes of happiness, and eventually finds the answers within. Feng's book weaves together the stories of Siddartha, the historical Buddha; of Sid, an American math teacher; and, surprisingly, of two creatures, crow and rabbit. In addition, she includes the voices of the women in both Siddartha's and Sid's lives, basing her portrayals on historical research she did for the book.   Feng will be reading from and discussing Sid at Eagle Harbor Books on Sunday, November 22nd at 3 pm.  We hope you'll join us, both for her reading and for the discussion afterwards, which promises -- given her accounts of what has occurred at previous readings -- to be as intriguing and enlightening as her book. From BCB... http://bestofbcb.org/arts-002-bima-artists-books-collection/ This fascinating and informative interview takes us behind the scenes to the magnificent collection of artists' books in the Sherry Grover Gallery of the Bainbridge Island Art Museum, providing insight into a wide array of artists' books with different themes, materials, texts, and ingenuity.   According to BIMA founder and artists' books curator Cynthia Sears, artists' books are “literalists of the imagination,” for their ingenious construction, literary cleverness, and sometimes, satire. In this podcast Cynthia tells BCB host Channie Peters where she finds most of the books she collects for the art museum, what is special about them to her, and where we can see more such beautiful and clever works of art and craft. BIMA is one of the few art museums in America to offer a significant collection of artists' books permanently exhibited in a special gallery designed just for such pieces of art.  The collection is diverse and always astounding in the cleverness, design and execution of each artist's book.   In fact, description pales before the actual visual impact of each book -- so it's best to visit BIMA, and see for yourself. The Sherry Grover Gallery is on the second floor of the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, which is conveniently located at the intersection of Highway 305 and Winslow Way, just a short walk from the ferry.    Credits: BCB host Channie Peters; BCB tech editor Tim Bird; BCB social media publisher: Diane Walker.

Greg Robinson, Executive Director & Curator of Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA), talks about the newly installed exhibitions for the June-to-September summer shows at BIMA. There are five solo exhibits and two group exhibits.  The solo show artists include Horst Gottschalk in the upstairs main gallery; Pierr Morgan, award winning children's book illustrator; David Eisenhour (“SWARM” bronze jelly fish hanging in window), Caroline Cooley Browne's paintings in the Bistro; and master metalsmith, Heikki Seppa.  The group shows include the latest rotation of artists' books curated by art museum founder, Cynthia Sears; and selections from the art museum's permanent collection. Especially fun for children, families and adults of all ages are the art activities created by Pierr Morgan, some of which will be displayed on the wall of the gallery. These shows will continue until September 20th. BIMA is located at the corner of Winslow Way and Highway 305. It is open daily from 10am to 6pm, and is free of charge to the public.  There is a bistro and a museum shop featuring unique art and crafts from the Puget Sound region. How do you design, build and install a 10 foot steel sundial, one of the biggest in Washington? Why have a sundial in a place where it rains a lot?  The answers to these questions and many more will be answered on Sunday, July 19th at 1 pm at the Ritchie Observatory near the southern parking areas along the service road in Battle Point Park.  The free public event is hosted by the Battle Point Astronomical Association (BPAA). In this interesting interview, meet Bill Baran-Mickle, a renowned metal artist who designed and built the sundial, and Frank Petrie, a BPAA board member and professional civil engineer, who was one of the main collaborators in the financing and engineering of the project. The elegant and massive 10-foot sundial on a 3-foot base is a stunning work of public art financed with private funds raised from individuals in our community as well as from others far afield.  This sundial represents a confluence of art and science set adjacent to Bainbridge Island's night sky observatory. This exciting dedication will be an opportunity for our community to experience this beautiful sculpture and ancient time piece together with the artist and many of those who have worked for many years to bring this installation to fruition.
