In this episode, the guest, Chiara Baldini, delves into the role of festivals as spaces for countercultural expression and personal transformation. Chiara discusses the dual nature of festivals as both entertainment venues and sites for deeper societal change, where participants can recharge and become more aware of ways to improve reality. She explores the historical context of countercultural festivals like Woodstock, which were pivotal in promoting revolutionary ideas and values. Chiara reflects on the 1960s counterculture movements, their political and spiritual dimensions, and their lasting impact on contemporary festival culture. She provides insights into the evolution of these movements and their ongoing influence on modern-day festivals like Boom Festival. Additionally, Chiara touches on the historical significance of the Dionysian cults in ancient Greece and their techniques of ecstasy, which included dance, music, and psychotropic substances. She discusses how these practices were led by women and maintained certain traditions despite the patriarchal context of their times. This episode offers a rich exploration of the transformative potential of festivals, the intersection of spirituality and politics, and the ongoing relevance of ancient ecstatic practices in contemporary culture. -------- Chiara Baldini is a raver, researcher, author, and freelance curator from Florence (Italy). She investigates the evolution of the ecstatic cult in the West, particularly in Minoan Crete, ancient Greece and Rome, contributing to anthologies, psychedelic conferences and festivals. She was the program curator of Boom Festival's cultural area Liminal Village from 2010 to 2023. In 2015 and 2016 she also set up and curated ConTent, the first cultural area in Fusion Festival, Germany. She has recently co-curated an anthology called “Psychedelic Mysteries of the Feminine” investigating the intersection between the feminine principle and altered states of consciousness. She is currently a PhD candidate at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in the Philosophy, Cosmology and Consciousness program. She lives between Italy and Portugal and she expresses her deep love for music by often playing as DJ Clandestina. --------- Viewing recommendations: Chiara Baldini - Countercultural Festivals; Then & Now at Breaking Convention 2024 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npah4vQCrb0 Dionysus: Ritual, Rave & Revolution https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjKkmvDmI67RidARHR0-r0sbh2Z8FbjFt Follow Chiara: Academia: https://independent.academia.edu/chiarabaldini Instagram: @iamalwayschiara Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chiara.baldini.9862 Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/clandestina-2-0 Book: https://www.innertraditions.com/books/psychedelic-mysteries-of-the-feminine Follow The Psychedelic Couch: @thepsychedelicouch
“If you go to buy a beautiful men's suit from a famous brand, you can go to Tokyo, New York, London or in Rome, and it would be the same because it's a brand, okay? So why do you travel? But in Florence, you go to a great tailor who will do a beautiful suit. You decide the textile, you decide the buttons and all the details that you love. And this is a unique piece just for you. And this is what we create every day, for every guest, in a different way. This is the sense of place.”We're in great company with Claudio Meli, the General Manager of The Place Firenze and Michela Babini, the Director of The Place of Wonders Foundation, who together, are tailoring their spirit of hospitality and their curated senses of the guest experience for a new generation of immersive travelers, dedicated to promoting and preserving the heritage of Italian craft. Here, The Place Firenze extends a warm Tuscan welcome, well deserving of their international awards and recognitions as a timeless classic reinventing made-to-measure hospitality - where every detail is inspired by the enduring beauty and traditional artisanship they are proud to have in their beloved city. In this episode, Claudio and Michela delight in the tales and testimonials that continue to unfold as they create a new home for us as travelers to visit in Florence - while curating the next generation of artisans and makers molding Italian craft into a modern day Renaissance. Top Takeaways[3:40] What makes The Hospitality Experience one precious thread woven between hospitality and experience, one family with a long history of curating hotels, one collection of new ideas? Three hotels strongly rooted in remarkable places - Londra Palace in Venice, Borgo dei Conti in Umbria, and The Place Firenze. [4:50] Claudio's love for Florence radiates as he shares stories of his beloved city - a rare treasure where Renaissance masterpieces line the streets and Tuscan vineyards roll just beyond, creating an enchanting blend of art and terroir that has inspired generations.[18:10] The Place Firenze is “deeply connected to its daily life, artistic heritage and lively cultural scene in this vibrant Tuscan city,” from the Scagliola tabletops to the Ginori porcelain table settings, from the Pamploni engraved silver glasses the Spaghetto al Pomodoro and Negroni Experience savored in such company. [28:30] Michela's passion speaks for itself as she shares how The Place of Wonders Foundation breathes life into Italy's cultural heritage by connecting curious travelers with master artisans in Florence, Venice, and Perugia, while nurturing the next generation of craftspeople through dedicated scholarship programs. [32:50] From designing zero kilometer sneakers in Florence to molding glass beads in Murano to weaving on ancient looms in Umbria - the foundation is creating an immersive journey for travelers and the next generation of makers alike - where traditional techniques meet contemporary innovation in workshops that have shaped Italian artistry for centuries.[41:15] Both Claudio and Michela agree there is so much left to be discovered in and around Florence, but it will take a future with more guests seeking slow travel, slow food, and slow moments, to really uncover those hidden gems. But just a few weeks after his arrival, on January 31st 2003, Matthew left an Irish pub and disappeared without a trace. His disappearance triggered an international search across Europe, with several unconfirmed sightings reported until around 2006. After that, the trail went cold. You've heard the saying a picture is worth a thousand words. Capturing the emotions of pride, hope, excitement, joy, nostalgia, loyalty, courage, and even pain is what Licensed Husker Artist Ashley Spitsnogle has mastered. Today on Husker Talk, Ashley tells the story of how drawing horses and mermaids as a girl led to painting our Husker heroes. As a native, her passion for athletics was ingrained at a young age, sitting next to her Dad watching the Huskers play on TV every Saturday. Her passion grew when she attended an art school in Florence Italy. This is where Ashley realized she would be happy to paint for the rest of her life. Ashley's mainstay as an artist is philanthropy: She illustrated the children's book ‘Josh the Baby Otter', which brings awareness to child safety around water. ‘The Last Tunnel Walk' was a painting for Heartfelt Inc. which benefited grieving parents. Depicting Brook Berringer and Sam Foltz, two Husker football players who lost their lives to fatal accidents, as they walk the tunnel walk together toward a bright light. A painting of the legendary coach Tom Osborne and Brook Berringer for the TeamMates Mentoring program that The Osbornes began in 1991. As she said this painting depicts so many aspects of Husker football and mentorship. She even used her talent to shed light on the Nebraskan farmer at a critical moment in time. As they endured flooding and she saw the pain it caused, Ashley painted an unforgettable image titled “Healing the Heartland” depicting how others gathered around their neighbors to help by trucking in loads of hay. I really enjoyed hearing her stories of hope and excitement for Husker Football as she spoke about her extraordinary Husker paintings. Thursday, August 29th Ashley is hosting an art event with all 3 Heisman Trophy Winners in attendance. The event is at Main Street Studios & Art Gallery in Elkhorn, to attend, RSVP https://www.ashleyspitsnogle.com/ and please keep in mind this is not a memorabilia signing event.

Between 1968 and 1985, eight couples having sex in either parked vehicles or a tent in remote areas just outside of Florence, Italy were murdered. The killer shot them with the same .22 handgun. And from four of the women, the killer took a brutal trophy.... their vagina. As morbidly fascinating and troubling as these crimes are, the inept, corrupt, and superstitious investigation into catching the killer is even more troubling and fascinating. Episode Florence, Italy part 2 Welcome to Dr. Mary Travelbest's 5 Steps to Solo Travel Guide In this episode, the FAQ is: What should I do about travel insurance? Today's Destination is Florence, Italy. Part 2 Today's Misstep- Narrow sidewalks and missing street name signage in Florence Travel Advice: Airfares are climbing in price, so beware of sticker shock. FAQ: What should I do about travel insurance? I don't have any financial affiliations with travel insurance companies, but I would follow some best practices. It's not too late to add them if you need them. I have health insurance worldwide, and my credit card may cover additional travel items. Solo travelers should care about this. https://www.squaremouth.com/travel-advice/category/travel-insurance-faq https://www.accademia.org/explore-museum/artworks/michelangelos-david/#google_vignette https://florencetips.com/churches-in-florence.html https://www.santacroceopera.it/en/ Connect with Dr. Travelbest 5 Steps to Solo Travel website Dr. Mary Travelbest X Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Page Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Group Dr. Mary Travelbest Instagram Dr. Mary Travelbest Podcast Dr. Travelbest on TikTok Dr.Travelbest onYouTube In the news
Florence, Italy Part 1 Welcome to Dr. Mary Travelbest's 5 Steps to Solo Travel Guide The FAQ is: My friend Jean asked about recommendations for the best rental car deals. Today's Destination is Florence, Italy. Part 1 Today's Misstep- Legal troubles: I was caught in Florence without a bus ticket and fined 42.5 euros. Travel Advice: Bring an umbrella for shade FAQ: My friend Jean asked for recommendations for the best rental car deals this year. She says it used to cost more if you picked it up at the airport, but now it's the opposite. She's asking for the best deals, whether AAA, Sam's Club, Expedia, Kayak, Booking, etc. They all seem extra high to her. Answer: Yes, the car rental business is doing well these days. I remember when, during COVID-19, I booked a car in Denver for eight days for $32. No longer is that the case. My best thing is to shop around and keep shopping. Finding your best deal may take a few or even 30 minutes, but it's worth waiting. I have used all the options mentioned here, plus Turo, which is like Airbnb for cars. They all have plusses but check to ensure you have the car you need a few days before you travel. I just checked with my Turo for next weekend in Ohio, and the host says the car was in an accident, so it's unavailable, but Turo did not inform me. So, I contacted Turo, and they helped me re-book a different car. Expect prices to be high in peak times like summer and holidays and destinations like Chicago. Consider cutting the number of days you're renting your car, so only for the days you need it, and use public transportation, Uber/Lyft, or walking on the other days if possible. It is with great pleasure that I welcome Frank Nero to the podcast. Nero is an art historian, award-winning educator, and former director of Florida State University Florence. He specializes in on-site lectures, having taught and inspired thousands of students during his career, myself included. The first part of this interview departs from our typical mode of discussion, and looks at the living legacy of Renaissance art from the perspective of someone who teaches it outside of the classroom. Not only does Nero provide inside information on the structure of international education through the American university system, the good and the bad (also the ugly), but also tells hilarious stories and experiences that come with hauling students through crowded historical sites across Italy. ***Nero calls by my familiar name, Reed instead of Lawrence... or Reedy, because he's a funny guy. This is our third and final podcast about the beautiful city of Florence and we might have just saved the best til last. But first, Just to answer a question I have received many times about our arrival in Florence in episode 62 – no I still don't know why the guy said he was a sniper and what he was actually trying to say – if you don't know what I'm talking about – then go back and listen to the beginning of Episode 62 and you will understand – still one of the funniest things that happened to us in Florence. Ok, back to episode 64 where we are taking you to my favourite palace in Florence – the Pitti Place (I know, the name doesn't do it justice) as well as the beautiful Boboli Gardens which are a green oasis in the middle of the city. Our guide Carmella showed us the most amazing galleries and living quarters of the palace. There was a quirky artwork including butterflies and dwarfs plus the most paintings by Raphael any where in the world. In fact all the Ninja turtles are represented at the Palace. We learnt so much about the art and artists (obviously as I am still calling them ninja turtles) and the beauty in this palace was stunning. Come with us as we walk around the 11 acres of the Boboli gardens. Some of the best views of the city are from the top of the gardens. We are quite intrigued by some of the grottos which look like lumps of plaster thrown against cave walls, but then you realise they are actually animals. Weird but fascinating. Next we go to a museum and unusual type of art gallery that only the locals seem to know about. and it was incredible. It involves rare semi precious stones and it is a technique that is only practiced in Florence. Stay listening to the end to hear about the sport – if you can call it that – called Calcio Storico. We tell you about this game which is a combination of rugby, martial arts, boxing, wrestling, and American football, just to name a few. It basically seems like a big brawl on the sand field involving 27 players on each side trying to score the most points. It actually dates back centuries and even some Popes played it in the Vatican city. It's a game unique to Florence and it's only played once a year in the annual tournament in June and involves 4 teams from the four classic neighbourhoods and the locals love it. Have you wondered what is like to travel to the beautiful city of Florence and stand in front of some of the most famous art works in the world? Well we share what that is like as we visit Michelangelo's David, see Botticelli's Birth of Venus and dozen more famous pieces. To say we were impressed is a massive understatement. After visiting all the famous galleries we embark on a fantastic wine and food tour where our very passionate guide shares the secret of the dark side of Florence and takes us on a taste sensation tour of the Florence and Tuscan region through local authentic restaurants. We also go to a place to drink wine that is totally unique and can only be found in Florence. I was so excited. We tell you where you can find the best panoramic views of the city – and the best time to go there and how we ended up back in front of the Duomo late at night watching a football match between my English premier league team and Firenze football club. This episode covers it all – food, wine, art, nature, football, history, food and wine – you get the idea. So please enjoy episode 63 – part two of our Florence series. This is our first episode about Florence – and we didn't think we were going to survive to tell you any of our Florence stories. I know that sounds dramatic, but at the time it was real - and it was all to do with the weirdest google translation from our air bnb host as we were locked in a dark entry way with him outside our apartment. The whole story is in the podcast. Now, Florence or Firenze as it is known in Italy is definitely one of my favourite cities. It is beautiful. There is so much to see and do, all packed into such small area. This is the first of a three podcasts about Florence. We couldn't fit everything into one or two episodes and do it justice. In this episode you will come with us as we walk along the Arno River and check the Porte Vecchio – which is the famous old Roman bridge with all the gold and jewellery shops. Next, without any plan really, we find Piazza Signoria where the replica of Michelangelo's famous David is as well as the Palacio Vecchio, Neptune's fountain and heaps other famous sculptures. But by far the most amazing thing we saw in our first few days was when we turned a corner and there was the Florence Duomo – the cathedral. Wow. I know I've said that before – many times – but this building is so incredible it just halts you in your tracks. Next we visit the central food markets, the leather market stall area, walk around the glamorous shopping area, find San Lorenzo's Basilica where Donatello's last works are, and finish at a dingy little bar – that became our local favourite.
