Poet January Gill O'Neil speaks with Ann Wallace about her new collection, Glitter Road, forthcoming from CavanKerry Press in February 2024. January discusses her year as the John and Renee Grisham Writer-in-Residence at the University of Mississippi, and her immersion in the difficult cultural history of the south, as laid against its rich and fertile landscape. She also reflects on the ways in which the pandemic, which began toward the end of residency, allowed time for family, writing, and observation of the natural world. We then hear from Dr. Randi Eckel about the new season of NPSNJ webinars during the next installment of Ask Randi. And co-host Kim Correro joins Ann Wallace in the final segment for an important conversation with renowned landscape designer Edwina von Gal in advance of her appearance at the Garden Futures Summit in New York City, which is hosted by the Garden Conservancy on Sept 29 and 30th. Edwina speaks about sustainable design and the Perfect Earth Project, as well as her Two Thirds for the Birds initiative, which offers an easy-to-remember strategy for incorporating native plants into our gardens.

Lawns into Meadows: Rebuilding Biodiversity Guest Owen Wormser, Landscape Designer, Abound Design Imagine planting native wildflowers in pots on a terrace or transforming a section of your high-maintenance lifeless lawn into a low maintenance meadow habitat, rich with biodiversity. Recent satellite photographs show that lawns now occupy 45.6 million acres, about three times the size of New Jersey, making the American lawn the largest irrigated crop in the U.S. in terms of surface area. Perfectly manicured grass lawns were marketed as an essential feature of the American dream in the 1940's and 50's. Today, lawn maintenance demands evermore precious resources - time, money and water. Lawns require labor, expensive motorized equipment and fuel consumption. They also involve toxic treatment applications – synthetic fertilizers, weed killers and insecticides – that poison life. In this episode landscape designer Owen Wormser explains how to replace the deadscape we call lawn with beautiful, low-maintenance meadows, that sequester far more carbon than a lawn. Owen is the author of Lawn into Meadows: Growing a regenerative landscape, an award-winning book published by Chelsea Green. Owen received a degree in landscape architecture in 1998 before founding his own landscape business, Abound Design. He offers consulting, installation and sustainable landscape design services inspired by permaculture and deep ecology. His work serves as a means for sharing his deep connection with nature, while further cultivating that connection within himself. He actively practices the skills and perspectives necessary to effectively weave people and the natural world back together. Joy is...When You Can't See It.After an early career characterised by hours at a computer, Charlie Harpur turned his back on desk work and embraced the physical elements of gardening. When not working as a Landscape Designer and Gardener, he is an impressive trail and ultra-runner who, in 2019, became the British 100km champion. His other achievements include finishing 3rd Brit at the CCC by UTMB and taking the win at Centurion Running's South Downs Way 100.Charlie epitomises the strength that comes through vulnerability, and I was humbled by how reflective and open he was in sharing about his complex journey with running and mental health, both past and present. We talked about building emotional armouries; the connectivity brought by natural neural networks; comparison culture and seeing the person behind the results; the lure of the great unknown; how plants and running can save your life, and why we would all benefit from stopping to hug the tree.Charlie and I chatted for a while after we finished recording and agreed that ideas around diversity in trail running that we touched on, in terms of life experience and body type, should not in any way detract from the need to continue advocating and addressing the issues that prevail with representation and inclusion in the sport. Charlie also dove further into his experiences with overtraining and underfueling, which led to hormonal imbalances and greatly impacted his physical and mental health, and the need for more conversations around this. We are hopefully going to schedule a follow up episode for him to share his story, as part of the process of starting those conversations. Follow: @charlie.harpur Hosted on Acast. In this episode I speak with Peter Donegan from Peter Donegan Garden Design. Peter is a Landscape Designer based in Ireland and will be designing a garden at the 2023 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, so we discuss how that came about.Peter started his passion for gardens and design at a very young age, 5 or 6, and still has the same passion for it 40 years later. He comes across as a very knowledgeable individual, and shares plenty throughout the chat, such as the importance of designers, landscapers and other trades all knowing their role when working together on a project, to ensure it runs smoothly.Peter also tells a story about a friend of his who started a music festival and invited him to come along, and his first questions was "Who's going?" to which his friend replied "If you're offered a ticket on a rocket ship, you don't ask who's going, you just get on the rocket ship", and this is a philosophy Peter lives by, saying yes to opportunities that come along, while also acknowledging that if you've got responsibilities like a mortgage, sometimes you have to say no!I mention a great talk that Peter does on Biodiversity which can be found here. You can see Peter's 'controversial' MIFGS Q and A here. And you can follow Peter on Instagram @peterdonegan or on his website doneganlandscaping.comYou can follow along with the projects we're currently working on via our Instagram page@instyle_gardens@thelandscapingpodcastYou can view each episode on our YouTube channel or on our websiteinstylegardens.com.au/the-landscaping-podcast
Do you want your yard to benefit nature, while also being a place that speaks to you and is somewhere you enjoy spending time? Would you love for your yard to also be a place your neighbors admire and that inspires them to create pollinator and wildlife friendly landscapes? In this episode of the Backyard Ecology podcast, we talk with Larry Weaner about how to achieve both those goals. Larry is a Landscape Designer and the founder of Larry Weaner Landscape Associates and its educational affiliate, New Directions in the American Landscape, or NDAL. He is also the author of the book, Garden Revolution. According to Larry, ecology based landscaping or ecological landscaping takes into consideration where and how native plants naturally grow then adapts that knowledge to your property. The goal is to create a landscape that not only benefits nature, but is also a place that speaks to you and is somewhere you enjoy being. One of the topics that came up several times, and in several different ways, was how we connect and engage with a place. The place-based parts of our conversation included not only personal connections, but also community connections. Community connection is important because if our ecology based landscaping connects with our neighbors, then they may replicate some of those principles on their own properties, thus increasing the ecological benefits. Another topic that wove its way throughout our conversation was maintaining and managing our landscapes. This topic came up multiple times and in multiple ways. As Larry said, there probably isn't any such thing as a “no maintenance” landscape. Larry also talks about the biggest challenge he sees people face, especially when getting started. Larry is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to integrating ecological principles and landscape design. His approach is one that really resonates with me and has done so for several years. I encourage anyone who is interested in creating ecology based landscapes to read his book and look into his courses. Until next week, I encourage you to take some time to explore the nature in your own yard and community. Landscape designers have a deep understanding of the natural world and how it can be manipulated to create works of beauty. They combine their knowledge with creativity, patience, hard work, and good judgment to design landscape features that are not just aesthetically pleasing but also functional. Derek Taussig has been in the landscaping industry for over a decade. In this episode, he shares his entrepreneurial journey, some secrets to his success, and the consequences of his decisions, such as a failed partnership. Derek is the Owner and Landscape Designer at Taussig Landscape. The company provides landscaping and hardscaping, including patios, irrigation, maintenance for lawn care, and snow management to Manhattan, KS, and the surrounding areas. He spent most of his life growing up here in Manhattan and working in the landscape industry. He started his original lawn care business as a young teen and ran it until 2003. He sold the business and joined the Kansas Army National Guard as a combat medic. He worked at professional landscape companies with nation-building knowledge and experience when not deployed overseas. After eight years in the Guard and numerous deployments, he ended his service to start school at Kansas State University. #034 - Floral decorator, garden designer and author Lucy Hunter shares her small business journey. From initially working in the corporate world, she changed career and became a landscape designer. She now also works as a floral decorator and has written her first book, 'The Flower Hunter'. Growing up, she always knew she was creative and she loved to paint, which led to her studying a Fine Art degree at Liverpool University. On graduating in the late '90s, she worked at the Royal Bank of Scotland in Chester and trained to become a consumer underwriter. When she got married and had her son, she moved from a flat to a small cottage with a garden. And she decided to retrain as a garden designer. She absolutely loved it and became obsessed with flowers and plants. Her landscape design business grew from strength to strength. However, she became slightly burnt out and felt a little lost. Around 2015, her sister was getting married and she asked Lucy to create her wedding flowers. She attended some floristry courses and workshops, became captivated by Instagram and decided to start creating floral designs for weddings alongside her garden landscaping work. Then the pandemic struck. And because she had the time, she decided that she might write a book. In the interview, Lucy shares her book-writing process, describes the book's content and reads an extract from the book. She also discusses where she gets inspiration from, how she creates the images for her Instagram account and the camera equipment she uses. Plus she shares her 'why', talks about how her podcast, The Restless Creatives' came about and shares her plans for the remainder of 2021. Listening to this episode, you'll hear how passionate Lucy is about the creative process and capturing beautiful floral images. At the end of the podcast, you'll discover her practical tips, which I'm sure you'll find very inspiring.
