On September 9, 2025, Israel Defense Forces struck inside Doha targeting members of the Hamas negotiating team. With the Israeli government appearing to reject any ceasefire despite the remaining hostages in Gaza, urgent questions emerge about the future of millions of Palestinians. Amid the crisis, a new book offers some clarity and context: "Tomorrow Is Yesterday: Life, Death, and the Pursuit of Peace in Israel/Palestine" by Rob Malley and Hussein Agha. Drawing on decades of negotiations between the US, the Israeli government, and the representatives of the Palestinian people, the authors explore how we got here and what it could portend for the future. This conversation was recorded on September 10, 2025. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
For decades, the United States backed efforts to achieve a two-state solution—in which Israel would exist side by side with the Palestinian state, with both states recognizing each other's claim to contested territory. The veteran negotiators Hussein Agha, representing Palestine, and Robert Malley, an American diplomat, played instrumental roles in that long effort, including the critical Camp David summit of 2000. But, in their new book, “Tomorrow Is Yesterday,” they conclude that they were part of a charade. There was never any way that a two-state solution could satisfy either of the parties, Agha and Malley tell David Remnick in an interview. “A waste of time is almost a charitable way to look at it,” Malley notes bitterly. “At the end of that thirty-year-or-so period, the Israelis and Palestinians are in a worse situation than before the U.S. got so heavily invested.” The process, appealing to Western leaders and liberals in Israel, was geared to “find the kind of solutions that have a technical outcome, that are measurable, and that can be portrayed by lines on maps,” Agha says. “It completely discarded the issue of emotions and history. You can't be emotional. You have to be rational. You have to be cool. But rational and cool has nothing to do with the conflict.” “What Killed the Two-State Solution?,” an excerpt from Agha and Malley's new book, was published in The New Yorker. From 'Sea Shells: Emerging Poets from Gaza' selected and translated by Batool Abu Akleen: https://modernpoetryintranslation.com/sea-shells-an-anthology-of-emerging-poets-from-gaza/
Batool Abu Akleen is a poet and translator in Gaza, Palestine. Her home in Gaza City and her university have been bombed and she has been displaced multiple times. We talked to her about refusing to write and then choosing to write through the genocide; about the importance of mentors; and about creating a community of literary translators in Gaza. Her first full-length collection, 48 kg, is set to appear from Tenement Press in June of this year. (Apologies for the sound quality; Batool spoke to us from one of the rare public venues in which it is possible to access the internet in Gaza; the connection was less than perfect and there is some background noise). Batool's discussion of her new collection and the meaning of its title is at 16.46 and Batool and Marcia's reading of the poem Milad/Birth is at 20.24. Show notes:You can pre-order Batool's 48kg from Tenement Press. It's coming June 15. Batool also has poems in the new GRIEF issue of ArabLit Quarterly and in Modern Poetry in Translation's Salam to Gaza.Batool is one of the authors of Comma Press's forthcoming Voices of Resistance, set to appear in August 2025.You can also read work by Heba al-Agha at ArabLit.You can donate to Batool's GoFundMe at gofundme.com/f/donate-to-support-batools-causeYou can subscribe to BULAQ wherever you get your podcasts. There is no doubt in the claim that the foremost interpreter of Ibn ‘Arabi (d. 638/1240) within Twelver Shi'ism is Sayyid Haydar al-Amuli (d. 787/1385), who in his Jami' al-Asrar thoroughly filtered the Akbarian doctrine in such a way that it emerged in accordance with the theological demands of the Twelver tradition. While Amuli's accomplishments in these regards are acknowledged, it is not known whether any schools arose within the intellectual centers of Iran and Iraq loyal specifically to his ideology; it is instead in the Islamic periphery of India, where demonstrable evidence exists to indicate the existence of such a school therein. Sayyid Nur Allah Shushtari (d. 1019/1620), the martyred Mughal chief justice, quite openly aligns with Amuli in his Majalis al-Mu'minin (Gathering of the Believers), labeling him as Sayyid al-Muti'allihin (Lord of the heavenly ones) whilst openly appropriating ideas from Amuli's Jami' al-Asrar to develop the thesis of his majlis-i shishum (sixth gathering) on Sufi believers. Shushtari argues that in essence Sufism and Shi'ism are one and the same, one is an inward expression whereas the other is outward. Furthermore, in his Majalis al-Mu'minin, Shushtari includes a lengthy entry on Ibn ‘Arabi, providing illumination on his supposed hidden Shi'ism, as well as a defense of Akbarian monism. Shushtari's views have routinely been categorized as aberrational by mainstream Usulis, like al-Wahid al-Bihbahani (d. 1205/1791), who decried him as a Shi'ah-tarash (Shi'ah fabricator); it is thus of great intrigue that when Bihbahani's student, Sayyid Dildar ‘Ali Naqawi Nasirabadi (d. 1235/1820), returned to North India in 1781 with the aim of spreading Usulism, he met stiff resistance by Twelver Chishtis (Sufis), who claimed to follow a supposed ideological school of Haydar al-Amuli linked with Shushtari. This occurs more than 150 years after the execution of Shushtari, indicating that such an Akbarian-Amulian lineage potentially existed in North India; also giving credence to the Sufi-Shi'i nexus claims of majlis-i shishum. In order to delve further into this matter, Nasirabadi's polemic against this group, titled al-Shihab al-Thaqib, and the rejoinder prepared by this Akbarian-Amulian group, Radd-i al-Shihab al-Thaqib, will be analyzed and expounded upon in this paper.

“Yes, there is oppression and hardship, but there's also culture and joy and beauty and love and friendship. I think sometimes even we forget that there is life, and life always finds a way, even under occupation.” – Sarah Agha What gives you a sense of identity and makes you feel connected to your community, your people? The narratives we build through art are at the heart of these identities. As we explore in this episode, getting them right is crucial, especially if you are Palestinian today. The Arab Film Club showcases exceptional cinema from the Arab World. The first series of their new podcast, which launches today, focuses on five pioneering Palestinian directors and their multi-award-winning films. Over the years, Sarah Agha, the club's founder, has shared a great deal of her culture and expertise in the subject. This episode explores some of the narratives built around Arab, and specifically Palestinian, lives, and who gets to tell those stories. It reminds us of the long history of Palestine, as Sarah recounts what it was like returning to the land where her father is from. And gives you recommendations on how to start your journey into the exciting world of Arab cinema. In this episode, you will learn: Why you shouldn't be afraid of your own ignorance. "Because I'm autistic, I avoided a lot of games that involve reading people's faces. I was really averse to games like poker where it's basically just 100%, wall to wall, reading faces. What's really different is there's a bluffing element to Star Wars: the card game...the thing that made a difference for me was context. Because with poker, there's no context for why someone would or would not be bluffing, because you don't know what cards they have. Whereas with Star Wars, you knew which unit they were using", says Bijhan Agha. Bijhan returns to Autism Stories to discuss creating a strategy board game, successfully funding their comic book, and how self publishing may be a viable route for other autistic creators. On Episode 51, we delve into the story of Agha Hasan Abedi and The Bank Of Credit and Commerce International, which has been described as one of the biggest banking scandals in history, including fraud and money laundering. at it's height, BCCI collected more than $20 billion dollars in deposits, and a good case can be made, that in effect, all of that money was collected fraudulently, more than that, BCCI was a revolution for banking as a whole, as they were really one of the first international financial institutions, and with their incredibly decentralized operating structure, they were able to circumvent the typical rules of banking, creating a safe haven for those who couldnt afford their money being scrutinized, including the Medellin Cartel, multiple military dictators, and even the CIA. "The Ninja Turtles are something else entirely. The Ninja Turtles refuse to mask. They wear masks, but what are they gonna do? It's a little domino mask over a turtle face- they look like turtles. They're basically a group of autistic friends who refuse to mask for other people. They're just gonna go out and they're gonna go be the freaks that they are inside, deep down, and they're just gonna let that freak flag fly, and love who they are and what they're doing", says Bijhan Agha. Bijhan joins this episode to discuss why many autistics relate to superheroes, her comic of a transgender muslim superhero, and identity exploration. Professor Martin van Bruinessen delivered a keynote lecture on the history and development of Kurdish Studies as part of a series of activities surrounding the LSE Middle East Centre's inaugural Kurdish Studies Conference on 24-25 April, 2023. The first attempts at institutionalising Kurdish Studies in European academia emerged as a result of the First World War and the British and French mandates in Iraq and Syria when there was a demand for hands-on knowledge of the Kurds. Anthropological studies of Kurdish society then began around the mid-twentieth century, with the emergence of a strong Kurdish national movement from the 1960s onwards stimulating journalist as well as academic interest in Kurdish politics. The growth and mobilization of a Kurdish diaspora, noticeable since the 1990s, has also contributed significantly to the development of Kurdish Studies with political changes in their countries of origin also having a major impact. Professor van Bruinessen assessed the trajectory and most significant developments of Kurdish Studies from its inception to present day. Martin van Bruinessen is Professor Emeritus of Comparative Studies of Modern Muslim Societies at Utrecht University. He is an anthropologist with a strong interest in politics, history and philology, and much of his work straddles the boundaries between these disciplines. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in Kurdistan (Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria) as well as Indonesia and Southeast Asia generally and has taught on subjects ranging from Ottoman history and sociology of religion to theories of nationalism. He carried out his first field research among the Kurds during two years in the mid-1970s when access was relatively easy and has frequently revisited the region during the following decades. Martin has published extensively on various aspects of Kurdish society, culture and history. His work was translated into Turkish, Persian, Arabic and Kurdish and is easily available in the countries concerned. Since his formal retirement in 2011, he held visiting professorships in Indonesia and Singapore as well as Turkey. His publications include Agha, Shaikh and State: The Social and Political Structures of Kurdistan (London, 1992); Evliya Çelebi in Diyarbekir (with H. Boeschoten, Leiden, 1988), Mullas, Sufis and heretics: the role of religion in Kurdish society (Istanbul, 2000), Kurdish ethno-nationalism versus nation-building states (Istanbul, 2000), the edited volumes Islam und Politik in der Türkei (with J. Blaschke, Berlin, 1985), Islam des Kurdes (with Joyce Blau, Paris, 1998) and more. Most of his numerous published articles can be accessed at his academia.edu page. Zeynep Kaya is a Visiting Fellow at the LSE Middle East Centre and Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Sheffield. Her main research areas involve borderlands, territoriality, conflict, peace, political legitimacy and gender in the Middle East. She has recently published a monograph entitled Mapping Kurdistan: Territory, Self-Determination and Nationalism with Cambridge University Press. Zeynep is co-editor of I.B. Tauris-Bloomsbury's Kurdish Studies Series and is co-convenor of the LSE Middle East Centre's Kurdish Studies Conference.
