There are lots of Englishes out there, but the way we approach varieties of English sets learners up to fail. How do we combat language ideologies out there in the world — and in our own minds? Dr Ruanni Tupas is the editor of an important new book: Investigating Unequal Englishes: Understanding, Researching and Analysing Inequalities of the Englishes of the World. We're joined by our special guest host Dr Nicole Holliday, and we are tackling a torrent of words — political and not — that the current news cycle has thrown at us. This week on Trade Secrets, friend of the podcast Jenn Lee of Travel Planners International returns to talk about the kind of language travel advisors shouldn't use when talking to clients. Co-hosts Jamie Biesiada and Emma Weissmann perform a sample dialogue for Jenn, and she takes Jamie, posing as an advisor, to task for all of her negative language (“I add value,” “What's your budget?”). Breathe of fresh air is the best way to describe Shawn as he came across full of life and love for the craft he has chosen and i had a blast chatting with with hard working actor from across the pond! Shawn can be seen in so many great shows so to have a bit of time with him was an honour! Follow Shawn on social media: Twitter: @iamshawnahmed website: www.iamshawnahmed.com POV: www.povfilm.org keep safe and stay super! Shawn Ahmed is an award-winning actor, writer and producer based out of Toronto. His grade 4 teacher recognised his wild imagination and ability to engage his classmates, so she cast him as the lead in the school production of Grease. Thus, began his love for storytelling. Even while he earned a Specialist in Economics and Economic History at the University of Toronto, he found a way to perform; working on stages in the backs of bars, church basements, and at street festivals. Shawn has since amassed a lengthy list of credits in film, TV, and theatre. He is called upon to deliver dramatic monologues on The Expanse (Syfy), provide comedic breaks in his recurring role on the hit series, Coroner (CBC/The CW), or to fight alongside the Royal Army in Far Cry 4 (Ubisoft). He is known for balancing line between comedy and drama, with a penchant for playing quirky character. Critics describe his work as “immensely sympathetic”, while some note his “quick wit”. One time in high school his friend yelled “Shawn's weird!” and everyone ran away from him. The next day his peers had turned “Shawn's Weird” into a song with an angelic three-part harmony (true story). These types of incidents and having the term “odd duck” levied towards him have made him wonder, “do I have the same curse as Keanu Reeves? Am I a character actor trapped in a leading man's body?!” He asked this question to Toni Braxton, who he stars alongside in the upcoming MOW franchise Fallen Angles Murder Club (Lifetime Network), to which she responded, “bro, I'm trying to eat my lunch here!” Notable credits include Under the Christmas Tree (Lifetime Network), DC's Legends of Tomorrow (The CW), Slasher (Chiller), Awake (Netflix), Twilight Zone (CBS), Love on Harbour Island (Hallmark), Hudson and Rex (City TV), Siren (Freeform), Rogue (Direct TV), Max and Shred (Nickelodeon), Saw VI (Lionsgate), Flight 93 (A&E), as well as the voice of Stephen Singh on Superhuman Public Radio. On-stage, Shawn has garnered critical acclaim for his work on The Orchard (After Chekhov), Of Marriage and Men (Shaw Festival); Twelfth Night (Shakespeare Bash'd); Romeo and (her) Juliet (Dauntless Theatre); And Slowly Beauty… (Tarragon Theatre); Macbeth (Driftwood Theatre); Comedy of Errors, Revolutionary Moments, and More Words! More Play! (Shakespeare&Company). Shawn proudly sits on the board of directors at POV Films, a charitable organization that helps marginalized youth break into the film and television industry through training, mentorship, job placement, and professional development. Over the past decade, POV has done a terrific job finding and training individuals to work within the industry. Shawn believes the next step for POV is to find the best and brightest and turn them into leaders. With this in mind, he reconnected with Fibe TV1 over at Bell media (where he's sold three of his own shows) and pitched a series of projects led by people he found and vetted through POV. Four of the five shows were greenlit and will air across Canada in 2022. Back in 2012, Shawn co-founded Crazy Shirt Productions, as a place for him and his creative peers to write, direct and produce. His projects have toured festivals worldwide, garnered awards and accolades, and sold for national and international distribution --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday was inspired by an unfortunate circumstance with one of my rescue dogs, Mollie. Mollie was suddenly taken away by the rescue organization where she was adopted because of claims related to her vegetarian diet. I was told that due to her diet, a veterinarian had diagnosed her with various health issues related to her kidneys and heart. Naturally, I asked for documentation to support these claims and when I was told they didn't have it, a battle was initiated between the rescue organization and myself. After meeting with various attorneys, my sense of helplessness and desperation increased. Grief and loss overwhelmed me because despite the abundance of evidence that demonstrated their dishonesty, a sense of direction and victory was nowhere in-sight. Despite the circumstances, I refused to give up the search for our beloved Mollie, regardless of the advice we were initially given. Not allowing hope to leave my side is what fueled my determination because the only reality I was willing to accept was Mollie returning to her home. As I reflect on other circumstances in my life where it appeared that I was defeated, I kept going anyway. What I've learned is that you can only lose when you give up. Falling flat on your face doesn't mean you've lost. But if you decide to stay face down, then you've lost the battle. Those that succeed and prevail are the ones that refuse to keep trying in the face of adversity. When you seek solutions instead of hanging onto an obstacle, you consciously choose to find a positive outcome. Therefore, it's no surprise that the people that have an end in-mind often find what they're looking for. Mollie reinforced the importance of tenacity and determination by showing me that the love I have for her is far greater than any road block we may encounter. Her temporary (and unexpected) departure proved to me that once again, the only person that can determine when it's time to give up is you. Lately, I've been contemplating and analyzing recent events in my life more than usual because of some changes that have led to feelings of loss. As an entrepreneur, I've had complete autonomy of my schedule, which has allowed me to move at a higher-than-normal pace. Because I became accustomed to this lifestyle and not being required to "check-in" with anyone, including myself, being exposed to a new routine threw me off course. I suddenly lost hours in my day due to a relationship and other unforeseen circumstances. Although our personal relationships are an important aspect of life, it's equally as important to supply and sustain our own sense of security. We shouldn't depend on our partners for happiness or mental stability, which is why I believe it's important that we always strive to maintain awareness when things around us are changing. The greatest and most reliable supplier of joy is your own self. The sudden "loss" of time I have felt lately led to many realities that I would have otherwise been unaware of. In today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday, I talk openly about the lessons and discoveries that various losses have resulted in--not just time. Whether you lose a person, job or object, lessons are always around the corner waiting to be uncovered. I've learned that with people, we often wait much longer than we should to eliminate toxic relationships from our life because we're afraid of something. That "something" becomes the lessons when we shift our perspective from loss to gain. Other times, when a relationship ends, we are taught the value of gratitude and are humbled by the pain that makes us aware of why not to take things for granted. Sometimes loved ones are "lost" in order to appreciate and relish in future moments with loved ones that still remain. All losses have lessons, but we have to be willing to explore these emotions knowing that eventually, we'll grow from them. Today's podcast episode was recorded the morning after the 2018 Midterm Elections. I was inspired by all of the female candidates and the various adversities they were faced with throughout their campaign. I realized that our reality stems from our vision. Whether we think we can or we think we can't, we're right. Your vision is your reality, which is why it's so important that we define what we want our life to look like. It's also important that we believe in ourselves so our power is not dependent on others. As I reflected on the elections and what it must have been like to campaign, I kept landing on the fact that before they inspired voters, they all had to find inspiration within themselves. In order to push through and keep going, you have to believe in your vision wholeheartedly, which is sometimes challenging. The most powerful dialogues that take place are the ones that no one can hear. The conversations that happen in our minds either serve as reminders as to why we should continue to stand up, or serve as negative manifestations that keep us down. In today's episode, I share two personal experiences that required my vision to prevail in order to turn them into reality. To-date, I continue to remind myself why I launched this platform because it allows me to create, despite sometimes feeling like no one is listening. My reality is created as a result of my vision and not the other way around. I don't wait for life to show up in order to see a productive and fulfilling life in my future. Despite living through a time of political division and adversity, many women found the courage to stand in their vision and become a part of history. They inspired us in the process and I'm sure, will continue to remind us of our power as we set sights on a brighter future. Todays podcast episode is about the importance of women supporting women in all aspects of life. Often, I read negative comments on Instagram from women stating their opinion about another woman's physical appearance, which encouraged me to talk about this matter and share my personal experience regarding the occasional lack of support from women. The remarks are often unsolicited and nasty in nature, which leads me to ask "why?" What's the purpose of putting someone else down that is doing nothing to you and instead, living their best life? Over the years, as my relationships with women have evolved and transcended into various dynamics, I've become much more aware of the people I choose to share my time with. Primarily, this became important when I noticed that it was much harder to celebrate others than to be available during the challenging times. Today, I look for confidence as a key characteristic when choosing my friends because the more confident a woman is, the less likely they are to "hate" on other women. From wearing makeup to embracing your own sense of style, some women across all social media platforms share their thoughts (both negative and positive) if a another female is stepping into their own identity. In today's episode on WOWW Podcast, I discuss why I think this is and how we can learn from the moments when we find ourselves playing the comparison game. Often times, it can highlight if we're living in a scarcity mindset because somewhere, we believe there isn't enough for everyone, especially us. Other times, when we're hating on other women, it can serve as a reflection for the things we're secretly insecure about. In both circumstances, confidence is lacking. If we want the world around us to change and acknowledge our presence, we must encourage each other to do it among ourselves first. By uplifting and celebrating one another, we set the example for the rest of the world to see and follow. I am not a mental health expert or medical professional and therefore, only speak from my personal experiences with depression and what has felt like a life-long battle with something I have little control over. As I've mentioned in previous podcast episodes, I lost a close family friend to suicide when I was 16 years old. I, personally, had a front row seat to his depression, which exponentially became worse in a short amount of time. Because I witnessed the stigma and consequences of remaining silent, I now speak up about these issues in an effort to help someone in need. Data shows (thank you, CDC) that suicide is the second leading cause of death for people between 10 and 35 years old. Between 2005 and 2016, suicide among this age group has increased by approximately 38%, which is higher than the rate at which the total US population has grown (9.4%). These rates are alarming because it tells a story about what is being uncovered in our society, but it often not discussed until it is too late. People with depression often suffer in silence and since the symptoms can be hidden from the public, treatment is not offered unless it's sough by the patient. When we hear of someone who is terminally diagnosed with cancer, it's common to find people around them that offer meals, time or words of encouragement. Often, a terminal illness can deteriorate a person to such a degree that if you have the ability to see, it's obvious something has gone terribly wrong. But with depression, the person may look different and therefore, everyone continues with their day while a dark illness hides behind the many masks one can wear throughout the day. I speak about this on the podcast because it's essential that we begin to address and acknowledge that mental illness is a serious matter that is currently becoming worse by the day. On average, about 123 people commit suicide per day. People need our help as well as the resources and information to seek the help of others as well, especially professionals. When my depression was at its darkest moments, I craved interactions with people the most. I simply needed to be reminded that I was loved. For me, this is where I began to develop an even greater spiritual practice. But for others, this could mean receiving a "just because" phone call on a consistent basis. We're living in a digital era that revolves around social media and communicating through Instagram stories or Facebook posts. But at the end of the day, we are all still human and still carry the same neurotransmitters we did 20 years ago. We are all still capable of feeling emotions such as loneliness, joy and sadness. Our gadgets may have changed, but we have not. Accepting that treatment for depression may be an ongoing procedure is also a great tip when it comes to helping someone with depression. If you know that a few words of encouragement may suffice that day, but may be needed again tomorrow, you're more likely to view mental illness with a different perspective. Be patient and consistent with people that suffer from depression because living with a cloud of darkness is not the kind of life anyone desires. If they knew how to take it away, believe me, they would. Many physical illnesses can be complicated and therefore, when someone is diagnosed, those around them become curious by asking questions regarding prognosis, treatment, symptoms, origin, etc. It is a support system that allows many people to attend difficult treatment procedures that impact their mobility and quality of life. Knowing that you're surrounded by people that genuinely care about your well-being is fuel and many times the differentiating factor in a recovery process--the same principle applies to depression. I remember feeling even more isolated and sad after friends and family found out I was severely clinically depressed. They expressed compassion for the first 24-48 hours, but quickly forgot about my illness. Because I did not have to report to a treatment facility or undergo surgery that would later cause vomiting, they did not understand. The few that became inquisitive about my emotions on a daily basis were the ones that felt like a ray of sunlight in the long-run. Become curious about the person that opens the door to have this conversation. Often times, it's a cry for help and consistent support and unsolicited love is the dose of medicine many need to seek the path that'll lead them towards recovery. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday episode is about following your heart because often, it has the power to steer us in the right direction. There have been times when I've done projects that only withdrew energy from me and because I was not following my heart, I thought this was "normal" and my unhappiness was part of the process. What I've learned as an entrepreneur is that our heart is an indicator of our joy. Although we may not always reap immediate results of our labor, our heart tells us when we're on the right path. Some people refer to this concept as "following your passion" but today, I want to remind you that your heart knows best, so listen to what it says. When we're in relationships that cause us consistent anxiety or sadness, our heart feels depleted of life, which often indicates that it's time to let go of the person we're trying to hang onto. When our heart feels revitalized and at-peace, we're in the right situation. With time, I have learned to rely on this internal compass, especially when it comes to making decisions that affect both my short and long-term well-being. Your heart knows best because it knows YOU. As two important dates approach, I began to reflect on the significance they have on my life. Almost three years ago, the most important person in my life suddenly passed away: my grandmother "Mamatita." She was a woman whose influence will forever live on. She taught me the importance of speaking up by showing those around her what courage looks like. She was never afraid, especially when the stakes meant sacrificing who she was. My grandmother taught me to do what was right and not what was popular. Whether it was politics, adultery, sex or parenting, if she had an opinion, she shared it. As midterm elections in the United States quickly approach, I wanted to encourage others to get involved by voicing their stance through their vote. We cannot complain about circumstances when we reject being part of the solution. Regardless of your political perspectives, we're all crafted in a unique manner and have different ways of looking at situations so that collectively, we all bring resourceful tools and suggestions to the table. Voting gives us the opportunity to participate in solutions so that our futures look brighter than our past. It has been said that the upcoming midterm elections will be one of the most important elections in history because it will determine where Americans currently stand. The people elected have great power on a state level over various policies such as: healthcare, education and economics. Their influence impacts our communities nearby. Upcoming elections impact the well-being of every citizen in the United States because they also serve as our voice in Congress. Today's Words of Wisdom podcast episode is about our perspective, attitude and disposition when things aren't going the way we envisioned. How do you show up for others when your personal circumstances are less than ideal? Do you treat bystanders with rudeness or disrespect when they have nothing to do with the challenges you're faced with? Not being aware of these traits and characteristics is dangerous because they're only amplified when circumstances begin to improve. When the stage gets bigger, so do the voices we've consistently expressed. We're taught to believe that the things that go on externally are solely responsible for our internal state. However, in today's episode, I discuss why this mentality can lead toward a destructive path due to minimal self-awareness that perpetuates negative behavior. Who we are when things aren't going well is the same person we'll be when our circumstances improve. Because of this lesson, I challenged myself and others to take a closer look at the positive (and negative) characteristics that we constantly possess. Who we truly are is revealed long before our life unfolds in the direction we prefer. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode is about envy and jealousy. When we're jealous of others, it often teaches us about our deepest desires, which can be turned into something positive. In order to see something in others, we have to be able to possess that ourselves. Therefore, if we're jealous of another person's relationship status and ability to attract love into their life, we are also identifying something we, ourselves, are capable of having as well. I discuss this topic because it's been something that has been frustrating and enlightening in my own life. Realizing the power that envy had in my life revealed some of my unresolved issues which in turn, resulted in positive and uplifting perspectives. However, I first had to acknowledge how frustrated I was when I'd confront anything that resembled jealousy-related emotions. With the recent impact that social media has on our mental and emotional health, this episode is meant to encourage self-awareness as we are exposed to a plethora of highlight reels online. Change is an inevitable fact of life. We make plans, form bonds and hold visions close to our heart only to realize that nothing is guaranteed or meant to be permanent. Change is the only constant and the sooner we are able to embrace this, the more likely we are to accept the different circumstances that together, make for an interesting life. In today's episode, I share my journey as an entrepreneur and how I've learned to embrace change during various phases. When we begin anything, we have expectations of what the future will be and many times, we become disappointed when we realize that our outcomes don't match our visions. These times signal us to change and become more accepting of present-day moments. They're meant to encourage adjustments that often lead to brighter destinations. Resisting change only hurts ourselves, which in turn, hurts our future. Realizing that change is the constant that we can rely on will turn a journey into an adventure of life lessons and valuable experiences. It opens our hearts and our minds to the possibilities instead of solely relying on any single track. Today's message is meant to encourage adaptation and versatility in order to keep moving forward and embracing the new instead of fighting the old. Todays Words of Wisdom Wednesday episode is about our personal relationships and the shift in our perspective once we realize that we don't actually "need" someone or something. Heartbreaks can be devastating, but no feeling is permanent, so once the initial phase of devastation passes, it's likely that we'll see things differently. Realizing that the negativity from a situation or relationship is optional allowed me to raise my standards and shift my focus onto something more positive that would compliment me rather than suppress who I truly am. And once you're over the dark period, it's almost impossible to take a step back. Because of this, reconciliation with exes can be difficult, especially if one person wants to make things work after the other person involved no longer yearns for the presence of their partner. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode is about creating space to recover or rebuild. It's also the first episode I've recorded after the volcano eruption took place in Antigua Guatemala on June 3, 2018. It wasn't until recently that I recognized the emotional toll this had on many people in the country that in some way or another were indirectly impacted by the catastrophic event. Shortly after this took place, the country went into fight-or-flight mode which greatly helped with relief efforts. When this happened, I was living 9 miles away which I believe increased my level of awareness about what these families were going through and how the rest of the surrounding villages would be affected. It was difficult not to cry after watching footage of the destruction. It was also difficult not to get involved when you're aware of the damages even if you avoid the media. Antigua Guatemala felt different after this day and even after the clean-up was managed, the scars were alive and well. Businesses, residents, government officials, and many others panicked as people were overcome with fear and concern for the victims and our community. When the dust began to settle, I was depleted of emotional energy and had no idea that's what happened until I created the space to identify what had unfolded. Creating space is not a bad thing and often necessary if we plan to regain strength, energy or momentum. In today's episode, you'll hear the ways in which I've done this in many different areas when things begin to feel "off." Whether it's between people or circumstances, without the space to reflect and piece together what's missing, we simply carry over those emotions into our future until it becomes too much to suppress and life forces us to evaluate our feelings. Today, I share how I've applied this logic at different times due to the consequences that have resulted from doing the complete opposite of creating space between myself and people, or me and my emotions. Todays Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode is about why WOWW Campaign was started in the first place. It's a message about inclusion with the intention of reminding people that we all have much more in common than we do differences. Everyone has issues, regardless of geographical location or socioeconomic status. Peoples problems are glorified in their minds, which means that we are likely to deal with a similar situation in a different way. Not voicing our concerns and insecurities 24/7 doesn't mean they don't exist. On the contrary, keeping in-mind that we all have issues will help us feel empathy even when external circumstances don't demand that we do. When we're communicating with other people, it's important to realize that their reaction to our problems may not always be ideal. More often than not, this has nothing to do with whether they're invested in us as people. Many times, their inability to engage with others has to do with their own circumstances. By reflecting on this message, I hope we take things less personal and show more compassion towards one another. Remember that everyone has issues...even if you don't know about them. Todays message is about the importance of living with a mindset that's rooted in abundance rather than scarcity. Having an abundance mindset allows us to help other people without fear that something will be taken from us when we do. An abundance mindset also allows us to look at the world with a broader perspective by realizing there's enough for everyone. In this podcast episode, I share why this is important whether we're going through a breakup or starting a business. When we're heartbroken, it's hard to sometimes come to terms with the fact that life moves on, as do people. When our partners find themselves in another relationship, we're left wondering if we'll also find someone else to love. An abundance mindset leads with faith - faith that there's more than enough love for everyone, including you. As an entrepreneur, I talk about the need for community and support during the various stages of our journey. In fact, I'm of the belief that no one can do it alone and there's a reason why we're all living on this planet together. People need of one another and when we're called to help, it's important that we do so from a place of abundance rather than scarcity. When we fear that our ideas or clients will be taken away, it only limits ourselves. We limit ourselves with this thinking because it's based in fear and fear restricts us instead of causing our minds and hearts to open. Creativity and innovation can't blossom from a place of "lack." Instead, it flourishes when it comes from a place of wanting to help people and provide products, services and information of substance. Enjoy todays Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode. Todays Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode is about the importance of placing value on your life in order to increase the quality of your existence. I discuss how changing and acknowledging the importance of my perspective regarding the subject shifted many of my behaviors. When my depression was in its darkest state, I wanted to simply exist and wished the days would go by as quickly as possible. Previously, everyday habits were done subconsciously and indulgence was non-existent. My goal was to get through the day instead of enjoying the gift that each day brings. After I realized that each day was not guaranteed, I began to have a sense of urgency to live. I slowly started to place more value on the simple things like breathing and being able to taste foods, which ultimately lead to more gratitude. The sum of these behaviors and experiences resulted in more happiness and feelings of joy. Today, it's what I refer to as "living." Living your life means appreciating everything that's in front of you instead of lamenting the past or worrying about the future. Eventually, mornings became something I looked forward to instead of avoiding. I started to seize the day instead of allowing it to takeover my mind. I began to live outside of my mind by acknowledging the various aspects of nature that consistently felt like miracles. Everything turned brighter and while I still battled various episodes of depression, overall, I felt like a different person that was excited and grateful to be alive. Asking ourselves the question whether we're simply existing or living has the ability to lead us on a different path that's often trying to give us a more fulfilling life. Making mistakes does not mean we've failed. Often, uncomfortable and negative situations occur to teach us something. Whether we have to learn something about ourselves or other people, falling flat on our face is something we should celebrate more often because they're learning experiences. In todays Words of Wisdom Wednesday episode, I talk about the various falls I've had, both personally and professionally. Each fall has been infused with insight and have often served as reminders to stay on-course. When I've lost focus and fallen because of a decision I've made, I'm reminded through the hardships of where I was originally headed, which in turn has  made me reevaluate the change in direction. When I've fallen because of a heartbreak, I was forced to look at the characteristics that were originally holding me together, which were often faulty because at the sight of loss, I'd lose myself. When I fell because of a lost business opportunity, I'd realize the control fear had over my being. I would often stay down because of fear that I'd continue to lose. But through the hurdles and bruises, falling has taught me me that you only truly fail when you refuse to stand up again. When you avoid walking into the arena that once defeated you, you relinquish control to a future that hasn't yet occurred. Today's podcast episode felt like a journal entry because of the series of events that crumbled (and then revived themselves) over the past week. Planning an event, coordinating projects, client meetings and everything else that comes with this role is hard work. I enjoy it thoroughly, but there are times when things are out of my control and I have no choice but to wait. When a client is due to respond, you can't force them to say what you want when you want. The entrepreneurial process is a big waiting game that forces you into a space of reevaluating whether you're a pessimist or an optimist. Recently, I was tested and realized that I'm more of an optimist than I thought. However, it wasn't always this way. In today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday episode, I discuss the lessons I've learned from choosing to push through in times when all I wanted to do was quit. Pushing through circumstances doesn't mean that you pretend the negative is non-existent. To me, pushing through means choosing to get back up despite wanting to stay down. It's the difference between movement and fear. When you fear that the same bad things may happen over and over, you become paralyzed. It becomes too scary to take the risk, which is why those that push through often prevail by a lot. Resilience teaches you what you're made of and how much you're able to carry. In today's podcast episode, I share how this has impacted my life and what I continue to learn from putting one foot in front of the other. Todays Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode is about the power and peace that awaits once we surrender a circumstance or situation to the universe after we've shown up with great effort, humility and tenacity. This message is not only about the importance of letting go, but also the importance of giving our best because once that's done, there's nothing left for us to do but surrender the outcome to the world. We are able to move forward and focus on the next opportunity because we're not living in regret when we give our best. Sometimes, this requires showing humility when we've made a mistake or changing our behavior once we've become aware of the negative impact previous habits had on others lives. But other times, doing everything we can is about having tough conversations and exposing thoughts or emotions that we know may be perceived as uncomfortable. Showing up is also required on a daily basis in our professional lives and as entrepreneurs. If we're not obtaining the results we want after showing up with grit, it may be time to pivot or make adjustments. However, if the results are indicative of a lack of initiative or work ethic, then we shouldn't let something go until we feel we've given our best. Living in regret holds us back because thinking "what if" prevents us from appreciating the now. Instead, we should put in the effort and hours, regardless of the situation so that in the end, we're able to release control of the outcome and therefore, be guided towards different and better opportunities. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode is about the power behind revealing the things we suppress and are ashamed of. I share my personal experience with my lifelong battle with depression and how hiding this part of me actually made things worse. A lot of positive change happened as a result of being less afraid of what people would say and dismissing the possibility of shame. My life took a turn for the better the moment I decided to prioritize incorporating new habits and rituals that would hopefully address the depressed feelings I was experiencing. When you don't have to hide who you are, everything feels lighter. For me, this allowed for new energy to replace the energy I was using to keep my depression a secret from the world. Healing begins with revealing and if we're stuck on keeping something a secret, we can't begin to heal those parts of ourselves which in turn, allow us to live an authentic life. Depression was not the only thing that affected me, keeping it a secret prevented me from growing both mentally and emotionally as well. What are you afraid to talk about? What moments in your life are you afraid people will know about? What habits do you try to hide from the world? Are your thoughts something you're happy no one can see? If someone could hear your mind at-work, what would that sound like? These questions are the things that led to a plethora of self-discovery and ultimately, a much happier life. Social media has both positive and negative aspects because it has allowed us to connect with people, but at the same time has also made us disconnect from one another. We all struggle at some point in our life but social media creates the falsa illusion that some people are free of suffering and challenges, which couldn't be further from the truth. This episode is about emphasizing the fact that the highlight reel (i.e. Instagram) is not real. Comparison is the act that prevents us from staying on our path and focusing on where we're headed instead of where we haven't been. It's an unhealthy habit because we focus on what we're lacking instead of what we already have. Experiencing gratitude is one of the reasons we're able to attract other positive circumstances, which is why it's important to exercise this habit on a daily basis. Only when we remain focused on our personal accomplishments and journey can we experience gratitude. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday episode is about eliminating toxic habits that we've become accustomed to, such as comparison. It's never too late to begin so don't worry about where others are in their life. Everyones footprint and destiny is meant to vary. Not only is love the answer when it comes to relationships, but it also helps us shift our perspective which in turn, shifts our behavior and how we show up to circumstances. Love is always the answer, whether or not we realize it in the moment. I began to uncover the root of my mental health issues when I realized that I wasn't in love with my life. In this episode, you'll hear how appreciation for the simple things in life resulted in more feelings of gratitude which were essentially emotions embedded in love. Love for nature, love for health, and love for everything else that previously went unnoticed. Love also became the solution for the things that prevented self-love from existing. The more I began to love my life, the more I appreciated my existence here on earth. I began to feel more comfortable setting boundaries with people because love towards myself meant putting my happiness first. Eliminating toxic relationships also came as a result of an increase in love. Loving the life I've been given has resulted in many positive decisions whose sole objective is to seek more happiness and fulfillment. When it comes to forgiveness, love was also the answer. During times of conflict or misunderstanding, we have two choices: to seek the light or remain in the dark. Choosing the light means looking for the good in people or maybe displaying compassion towards those that come across as wounded. In this episode, you'll hear how love allowed me to forgive my ex boyfriends and also feel more empathy towards them even though their actions caused me tremendous pain at one point. Love translates into so many different things which is why I decided to record todays message on Valentine's Day. How we treat one another and people we barely know all stems from how we view ourselves and the world around us. Much of the unity we need requires high doses of love and empathy, but we must first make the choice to sit in the seat that the world so desperately needs. In this podcast episode, you'll hear why regardless of your intentions, everyone won't be happy for you and your accolades. Whether you're trying to make a positive social impact through your business or your desire is to evolve into a better human being, don't expect people to give you unsolicited praise. When we end a relationship, we exhibit courage and strength because many times, we're simultaneously stepping into the unknown and inviting a range of emotions as a result of these difficult decisions. When we choose to start a business, a similar thing happens because regardless of how many books we read or how many hours we meditate, nothing guarantees us success and certainty. Again, we step into unknown territory and risk feeling emotions associated with fear. However, the common denominator here is courage. And while many people wish they had it, the truth is that this characteristic is like a muscle that has to be used and doesn't automatically come instilled within all of us. As I've stepped into various phases and roles in my life, regardless of the level of difficulty, risk has always been involved. My courage has often been a reflection for others that subconsciously are trying to find it within themselves. I've learned that if someone is not secure or happy with where they are in life, it's difficult for them to be there for others that are rising in some way or another. The larger my visions and ambitions became, the lonelier it has felt. Regardless of how much success or determination someone shows, we are all still human. We all crave to be heard, seen and loved, so unsolicited praise is always appreciated, but shouldn't be expected. Continue to climb and achieve desirable circumstances, but realize that not everyone will be happy for you and this has nothing to do with who you are as a person, but rather who they currently are not. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday episode is about the importance of doing things and being around people that increase your state of happiness. It's a great indicator that we're headed in the right direction and doing what's meant to be in that moment. Allowing joy to be your guide is giving the universe permission to show you a well-lit path. In this podcast episode, you'll hear how this simple, yet effective concept led to new opportunities and allowed me to close the door on circumstances that no longer benefited my soul. Instead of being guided by external validation, joy allows you to trust your own internal compass. The trigger we all carry is meant to ignite under particular situations and around people that are supposed to be in our lives. It's the feeling we get when we barely know someone, yet their presence for some reason makes us incredibly happy. Pay attention to those moments because they're often there to tell us something and already know what we're meant to extract from that relationship. For me, that silent feeling of joy around strangers has usually led to life lessons because somehow, my heart knew what I needed before me. The same applies in our professional lives when we're doing tasks that accelerate time. When I began to notice what actions made me lose track of dates and times, I knew I was headed in the right direction. For a long time, I resisted this because I felt guilty for being happy while I worked. Subconsciously, I associated 'work' with suffering, which is not at all how I want to live my life. You'll hear a detailed testimony about my experiences with joy and how I slowly learned to trust those happy moments and let go of the guilt I once felt. Before I launched the WOWW Campaign podcast, I took about 18 months off from entrepreneurship. I knew I was grieving the death of my grandmother, but I had no idea why our relationship was so significant in my life. "Love" was not enough of an explanation and so I waited to understand so I could move on with my life and get back to the work I love doing, which is inspiring women through storytelling. One of the things that shifted my life drastically was when I began to be honest with myself by answering some of the hardest questions I've ever asked. In order to uncover the root of my pain, I had to face aspects of myself and my past that I had previously kept hidden from the world. As I've said in other podcast episodes, it all starts with self-awareness. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode is about the importance of being honest with ourselves and how doing this is the gateway to many other things. Positive change results from having the courage and humility to admit to ourselves what we've been avoiding. I was able to launch the podcast and feel more motivated than ever when I understood where my fear came from because it separated me from the fear itself. The more I understood cause and effect, the less I revolved my identity around this emotion. "Keeping it real with yourself" paves the way for a path of self-discovery and introspection that often leads to a more fulfilling life because we become less afraid of experiencing the range of emotions that accompany all of our experiences. There's nothing scarier than facing ourselves and once this can be done, everything else is confronted with less fear. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday episode is about choosing to start again and not allowing your past to dictate your present actions. Because we've all been hurt, rejected, betrayed and disappointed, it's important to remain aware of how these emotions leave scars that later manifest in different ways. Many times, we react based on what we've previously been through, but these reactions aren't always positive and often, close us off from the possibility of experiencing new people, relationships and opportunities. The purpose of today's podcast episode is to remind women everywhere that while it's important to learn from the past, it's even more important to make a conscious effort not to allow the scars that remain in our hearts to pave the way of our future. In both our personal and professional life, there will be hardships and challenging times. But choosing to start again requires us to continue putting our best foot forward. We should strive to give our present everything we have in order to avoid regret. "Don't bring your past into your present" is about cherishing the lessons that painful experiences left behind but appreciating the "new" for what it is: the opportunity to begin again and create new memories that just might surprise us. 2017 was the first year I kept and completed my New Year's Resolutions and when I analyzed the reasons why this actually happened, it was due to small actions that I took every single day. Naturally, I want to be able to do this in 2018 as well, so what better message to kick off the New Year than a lesson about what I learned from my New Years Resolutions these past twelve months. What I realized was that everything began with one step. Instead of focusing on the big picture, I chose to focus my attention on small things I could do on a daily basis because thinking of where I'd rather be was too overwhelming. The New Year is a time to reflect and begin again, which is why many people set new intentions and goals for the coming year. New Year's Resolutions are frequently made but seldom kept and until last year, I was one of those people, too. Today's episode discusses what finally ignited the launch of the WOWW Campaign podcast and how I was able to complete 99 episodes in one year. Taking action and changing things in your life doesn't happen overnight and often times, requires consistent patience. All of the great leaders of the world we know of today also started somewhere and began from zero. The intention behind today's message is to encourage you to look at your New Year's Resolutions with a different perspective so the chances that they're accomplished become greater and manageable. Crazy to think that one year ago, I was visualizing what it would be like to have the WOWW Campaign podcast launched. One year later, I'm writing about the lessons learned that this journey has taught me these past 12 months as a result of recording the first 99 episodes. My goal was to publish one episode per week, so to have 99 episodes recorded feels somewhat surreal, but immensely gratifying. Although this path hasn't been easy, it's been enlightening and well worth the challenge. I've learned a plethora of lessons that I hope will help to inspire other entrepreneurs and encourage people to keep going. As you'll hear in this podcast episode, some of my darkest times have been my greatest teachers and sources of inspiration for new projects. Aside from absorbing the lessons learned, I've remained hungry for discovery because knowledge and evolution is infinite. I'm certain that the next 99 episodes will bring new lessons, new experiences, and new sources of inspiration. But for now, I leave you with an episode about scarcity, planning, winning, loss, consistency, and the importance of taking initiative. Enjoy! I've interviewed many female leaders and there's a common denominator that was the inspiration behind today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday episode. Whether it's a spouse, friend, neighbor, or your faith, we all rely on something/someone to remind us we're not in this alone. I discuss how some of my darkest moments that came after my grandmother's passing was due to extreme feelings associated with loneliness, which in turn led to isolation and despair. Whether you're an entrepreneur or not, the purpose of today's message is to encourage unity because regardless of our path, we need other people to navigate some of life's challenges. In this podcast episode, you'll hear how my faith ultimately played a positive role in my depression and was a catalyst to my recovery. Believing in something greater and ultimately, the thought that someone was by my side guiding my steps gave me strength because alone, the thought of doing life was too much to do on my own. "You can't do it alone" is a message I hope leaves women feeling inspired to not only help others, but also seek help for themselves. Independence is great, but it's not the ultimate source of power and I do believe that because we need one another, we're all better together. Lately, I hear a lot of references made about the importance of "self-care" but to be honest, I wasn't quite sure what it meant or entailed. I would immediately picture myself getting a manicure whenever I'd hear this topic come up. But lately, I've become more curious about the idea of taking care of yourself and what that actually feels like. The past six months have been some of the happiest times of my entire life so I've taken time to carefully examine the things that have contributed to these joyful {pun intended} feelings. I want to begin by clarifying that my sudden increase in happiness hasn't come from the abolition of sad or unhappy moments. Neither has it been a result of a sudden inheritance or pile of wealth that has allowed me to travel the world. None of that has remotely happened, so like everyone else, I still have "bad" days and continue to be a motivated entrepreneur trying to grow my platform. The cause of my happiness has been because of "self-care" and the fact that I finally know what that means for me. Taking care of yourself is not selfish and in fact, it should be required. You can't give to others what you don't give to yourself, so it's important to define those parameters sooner than later. I learned that saying "no" isn't difficult for me to do and when I agree to circumstances or people that go against who I truly am, it doesn't feel good in my body and sooner or later, ends up manifesting in negative ways. Therefore, I started to say 'no' a lot more often while creating boundaries in my friendships and relationships so I could remain true to myself. This resulted in spending less time with people that had gone way past their expiration date in my life. I learned that everyone isn't meant to stay forever and taking care of myself, actually putting self-care into practice, meant being honest. For the first time in months, I recently took a day off to act like a tourist. I realized that I refrained from doing non-working activities because my childhood taught me that in order to be valued, doing something/anything was necessary. I felt worthless when I wasn't working, so I always worked. But one of the greatest epiphanies I've had has been related to my work and this podcast. I've come to the conclusion that self-care is everything that makes your heart sing and for some, that includes the professional work you do or how you make a living. I'm lucky to be in a field that speaks to my soul on a daily basis and even though it's hard for many to believe that I rather be working than doing almost anything else, it's true. In this episode of Words of Wisdom Wednesday, I talk about the importance of self-care, what that looks like for me and why I feel the need to encourage other women to seek similar feelings within themselves. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode is about the importance of choosing your surroundings wisely, including people you allow into your life. We often hear the words "the more the merrier," but this isn't necessarily true. Sometimes, our souls need to be protected and 'distance' happens to be the cure. Distance creates space, both physically and mentally. It's true that we often appreciate what we have once it's no longer available. That's not to say that only through alienation will we feel gratitude because we can be grateful when we're close to others, too. However, space, silence, distance and solitude can be used for the positive. We often notice a shift in some way and this helps us clarify whether this is a relationship worth keeping or not. Distance between two individuals should be seen as something positive and a tool that can only benefit us in the long-run. When two people separate, they either come back together or stay apart and when the separation is permanent, most people realize they're better off without the other, which is a win for all parties involved. Fear often keeps us from exploring this space and therefore, we fight to keep things unified when maybe there's nothing left to salvage. Today's message was recorded to inspire you and encourage you to look at these scenarios with an optimistic mindset. We learn and grow through our experiences and practicing these messages, which is why it's important that they're discussed. Distance from people isn't always a negative outcome and today's Words of Wisdom explores the many different ways that this has been true in my life. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday episode is about mental health and the importance behind implementing tools that make you feel better or put you in a healthier state-of-mind. As I've mentioned before in previous podcast episodes, depression has been something I've struggled with consistently and only recently have I started to recognize which small changes in my daily routine help influence my mindset. In this episode, I talk about the three things I do when I'm feeling blue in hopes of inspiring others to seek understanding behind their own personal struggles and circumstances. The three things I do are: Organize my personal space. Read with Frankie {WOWW Campaign's Chief Motivation Officer AKA my dog}. Do tasks related to work productivity. 1. Organize my personal space. Organizing my external surroundings instantly makes my internal world more peaceful. By nature, I'm the type of person that appreciates things being in their place and a sense of cleanliness. In the darkest moments of my depression, I noticed a pattern that was not reflective of who I truly am. I realized that anytime I didn't feel at peace with myself, my home was usually disorganized as well, which has never been a habit of mine. When I started to do things around my house that were parallel with how I actually wanted to feel internally, it was instantaneously satisfying, so I did more of this. And during difficult times, I make a conscious effort to keep things around me in their place, not because it gives me a sense of control, but rather because it brings me happiness and a sense of stability that reminds me of my potential and where I aim to be. 2. Reading with Frankie. I used to think that I'd read one book and then it'd lead to a permanent state of enlightenment. Not sure what I was thinking, but I know now that's not the case. In fact, I'd crave inspiration when I wasn't reading a book early in the morning or before going to sleep at night, so I began to pay closer attention to the feelings reading would bring me. What I noticed was that I felt "lighter" and more at peace when I was learning and acquiring knowledge in some way. It made me feel like I was moving in a positive direction or simply that I was moving forward, in general. Over time, I learned to be more consistent about my reading habits so I could benefit from the effects this habit had on my mental health. Luckily, I discovered Kindle Unlimited, which I immediately subscribed to in order to read many different books per month and as a result, improve my overall well-being. 3. Doing tasks related to work productivity. No matter how small the task, I don't allow my depression to knock me out like it once did. It used to show up and I'd be "paralyzed" for days, sometimes weeks. One day, I decided to do something as simple as check my email even though I didn't even have the energy to eat. I felt useful, even for those few moments, but it was a positive feeling that left it's imprint. So the next time I was feeling depressed, I again forced myself to make a phone call or contact a client. Little by little, these small tasks became addicting during these dark periods because it felt better than not doing anything at all. In time, I wanted to do more productive actionable tasks that would lead to an accumulation of an entire workday. Noticing these things required a tremendous amount of self-awareness and vulnerability because it wasn't easy to admit that there was a problem to begin with. These observations became tools and in-time, valuable assets that never expire and have a positive ROI on my business, but on my physical and mental health as well. I love talking about relationships and the lessons that various circumstances left behind in my life. Because of this, I decided to write a book titled: 10 Lessons My Exes Left Behind. If you'd like to know when it'll be available on Amazon, sign up to our newsletter using this link. Today's message is about empathy and how realizing that we're more similar than we are different helped me feel compassion and empathy towards ex boyfriends that I once felt didn't deserve any of these emotions from me. In this podcast episode, I talk about how my faith and believing that we all come from the same "Source" influenced my perspective by eliminating hierarchy between personalities and individuals. Realizing that we all feel pain and heartache but maybe show it in different ways allowed me to feel closer to people that I had previously rejected. In no way does this mean that we should allow everyone into our life because of these similarities. Rather, this perspective should serve to help us heal and let go of situations and people by not allowing feelings of anger or remorse to feed our ego. "We are all in this together" is a reminder that we all have our highs and lows and we all make mistakes in different areas of our life. The magnitude of our mistakes don't make one person better than the other. On the contrary, I've learned that many of the experiences and feelings we encounter are inevitable because life is full of suffering. Therefore, these similarities among human beings should support why we should forgive more often, exhibit compassion and remember that we are all in this together. Ep. 079: WOWW - 3 Reasons Why Entrepreneurship Is Not For Everyone

WOWW Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 15, 2017 9:55

According to my research {AKA Google Searches}, this week is recognized by many global organizations as "Entrepreneurship Week." Lately, I feel like entrepreneurship has been sensationalized and some of the realities associated with this journey aren't discussed enough, which is why many entrepreneurs suffer in silence. Choosing this path comes with a lot of freedom and yes, making your own schedule is an attractive aspect of entrepreneurship. However, with this kind of freedom comes a plethora of other aspects that are not-so-attractive and often, extremely difficult to get accustomed to. In today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode, I'll be highlighting 3 reasons why entrepreneurship is not for everyone. You have to be detail oriented, but detached from perfectionism. Rejection shows up on a daily basis. Most of us are slaves to comparing. 1. You have to be detail-oriented, but detached from perfectionism. Before I launched the WOWW Campaign podcast, I had to breakup with perfectionism because this was holding me back in more ways than one. When I was creating the podcast, I researched things to-death because I didn't want to create or publish anything that wasn't viewed as "perfect." However, creating a platform from scratch can feel like you're putting together a puzzle. It requires you to keep the big picture in-mind, while training your mind to think on a micro level and bridge the pieces necessary that'll make up the end goal. The attention to detail is constant and necessary if you plan to be successful. But if you're tied to perfection, those details will not only take twice as long to create, they may not even get completed at all. Speed is everything in the beginning stages of a business and if you're not willing to create, adjust and pivot on a regular basis without taking things personal, entrepreneurship is not for you. 2. Rejection shows up on a daily basis. Whether or not you're selling a tangible product, entrepreneurship always requires a sales component. Sometimes you're selling an idea while other times, you're selling a service no one has purchased. Unless you're Oprah's child or have a last name that's known globally, you'll probably be the only one that's going to have blind faith in your idea. Family and friends not showing the support you thought they would is a form of rejection and yes, it's painful. Potential clients not returning an email or phone call is also a form of rejection. Reality is, rejection shows up on a daily basis when you're an entrepreneur. Today, we live in a world where 'likes' dictate our popularity, which is having a negative impact on the mental state of many people around the world. If you're sensitive to these things or the idea of rejection overwhelms you with fear, entrepreneurship is not for you. 3. Most of us are slaves to comparing. Social media has made it easy for people to analyze strangers, which has created a vicious cycle of comparing and contrasting. The truth is there will always be someone more successful or more attractive than you. If you have any type of physical insecurity, this can be enhanced due to social media. The same applies for entrepreneurs because competitors also have access to the number of 'followers' and growth a business is experiencing. In order to be successful, we have to stay in our lane and commit to focused productivity. Entrepreneurs can't afford to waste time looking at what their neighbor is doing because not only is it time consuming, it's counterproductive. If you're a slave to comparing in any way, entrepreneurship is not for you. By nature, I'd define myself as an "intense" person because I'm passionate about topics and my love towards certain conversations isn't forced. This trait naturally translates into my personal life because my relationships with people carry a lot of weight since allowing someone into my space isn't the easiest task. Although I'm fascinated by human beings and the complexity of our emotional and mental state, who I spend my free time is a different story. I don't have a lot of free time, therefore, where it's allocated and how it's dispersed is strategically calculated. I used to think that everyone in our life had to occupy the place of "BFF." However, life and time have taught me that individuals vary for a reason and therefore, it's normal that our dynamic with people vary as well. Everyone isn't meant to be our best friend or love of our life. In fact, many people are here for the sole purpose of teaching us lessons and exposing us to new ways of thinking. Some people are here to open our hearts, even after they've been broken. The point is, everyone has a place in your life. The reason some people only stay for a season remains a mystery, but always has a purpose, which is why we should be grateful for the experiences we're a part of with these people. In this episode of Words of Wisdom Wednesday, I talk about how I've learned to accept the different types of relationships into my life. Looking back on my friendships, they were what I needed at the time even though some of them may have transformed into something different that now feels foreign. As people, we're constantly changing, so it's only normal that the relationships in our life evolve as well. When a relationship ends, look for the lessons because they're always there, waiting to be discovered. Often time, there's shame associated with the end of a relationship or friendship because we're afraid that others may think we're not worthy or flawed in some way. In order to embrace the lessons that arise from these situations, we must first let go of the need to please other people and accept that regardless of circumstances, people will always have an opinion about situations unrelated to them. By releasing the shame, we open ourselves to the possibility of self-awareness, enlightenment, fresh perspectives, and a yearning for personal development. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode is about the reactions we receive from people as a result of taking action in our own life. Although your intentions may be in a good place, which includes celebrating vulnerability and courage, people around you may not celebrate those triumphs in the way you expect them to. This happens because your reflection may blind some people and also serve as a mirror to show them what they have not been able to accomplish. I've had ex boyfriends and friends that became annoyed whenever I was friendly towards a stranger. Initiating a conversation would be frowned upon and sometimes followed by a passive aggressive comment referencing my desire to want to connect with people. Initially, I took this as unwarranted criticism that I saw to be completely unnecessary. As a result, I'd become defensive towards the individual that would reject my innate personality traits. However, as time and life have shown up, I've learned that people often react due to their internal environment, not yours. Engaging with strangers, starting a business, leaving a relationship, all of these things require some type of courage and vulnerability; two traits that many wish they had, but can't figure out how to acquire. Therefore, many of the things we decide to do in our own life serves as a reflection for others and that itself, is enough to blind a village. I mention these experiences in today's podcast episode because it's important for us to be realistic about the expectations we have for other people so that when we begin our own journey, we're not filled with a plethora of disappointments. The things you do in your life and the courageous actions you choose to embark on may not only blind some people, but also serve as a reminder of what they're incapable of doing. This is easier said than done, but displaying empathy and compassion in these scenarios makes all of the difference. This doesn't mean we turn a blind-eye and accept verbal or emotional abuse, rather we should become aware of the reality and create separation so that our emotions and feelings aren't inundated with external chatter that in the end, has nothing to do with us. I remember the first time I experienced disappointment when one of my ex-boyfriends and I decided to go our different ways. I knew I was too young and unaware to be in a serious relationship, but nevertheless, letting go of that first love was painful and hard to accept. The first thing I wondered was if I'd ever feel that kind of love again; I didn't know if I would smile again. It was the kind of love that makes you forget other people exist in the universe and the kind of love that makes you believe that anything is possible. It was young love, but it was pure love. It seems that there's a pattern in my life when I break up with an ex-boyfriend. I always make drastic changes the moment I realize I wasn't living up to my full potential when I was in the relationship. Years ago, I decided to move and study abroad, which led to a plethora of new lifelong friendships and wonderful experiences. I went out most days of the week and was usually the first one to arrive at every social gathering I was invited to because I craved human interaction more than anything. When my ex-boyfriend and I dated, I rarely went out or experienced new things since we fell into a routine rather quickly. Naturally, this new chapter felt exciting because of the fun stories that came along with every exhilarating event. As time passed, I found myself smiling more often and soon, the feeling of heartbreak and confusion started to feel like a distant memory. When you're going through something painful, it's not unusual to wonder if those sad feelings will stay there permanently. They're so profound that it seems impossible that they'll pass through, like everything else in life. Those emotions begin to identify with the unrealistic thoughts that you may never smile again, but you will. I did smile again and not because I was happy to have gotten over my ex-boyfriend, but because the life I began to live later on was a reminder that joy could still be found in unexpected places. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday is to remind you of that fact: you will smile again. Don't force it or fake happiness because eventually, the true emotions will surface. Rather, have unwavering faith that your life will begin to unfold as it should and that way, when those new fulfilling experiences show up, you'll not only genuinely smile because they're happening, but you'll also thank the universe for showing you that everything is temporary. Enjoy the new reasons why you're smiling and be grateful that your pain didn't last a lifetime. Ep. 66: WOWW - Bask in Laughter

It's only when "the end" knocks on our door that we reflect on the moments that actually mattered. Much of the conflict we experience with other individuals stems from misunderstandings and lack of clarity, but rarely stems from meaningful things that we should forever hold onto. However, this doesn't stop us from hurting one another and making circumstances a much bigger deal than they need to be. We do this with friends, family members, loved ones, partners, strangers, and yet a fundamental aspect is often overlooked: in the end, it doesn't really matter. Today's Words of Wisdom episode is about the importance of basking in laughter because joy  is underrated until you no longer have access to it. Appreciate the moments that you laugh so hard your stomach hurts and remember that nothing is permanent. Focus on your level of self-awareness so that the next time you're sitting in front of someone you love, you choose to rejoice instead of looking for what's missing. One of the lessons my past relationships has left behind was due to conflict arising. When I realized I couldn't remember why most arguments began, I instantly noticed that they probably didn't matter to begin with. However, when I savored the joyful moments, I immediately wished I would have been able to freeze time. I share this lesson with all of you because it's important to realize what we could do more of, and not only reflect on things to avoid. Bask in laughter because you never know the turns life takes and how much time we have left. This message is not suggesting you ignore other subject matters that are important to you, but pick your battles wisely. As life goes on, we don't wish we would have spent more time fighting. In fact, time and the inevitable "end" serves to remind us that since nothing is guaranteed, we have a choice to shift our focus, and ultimately our energy. Where focus goes, energy flows.  LINKS: “FEMALE is my greatest asset” Graphic Tee “My hustle will make you say WOWW” Graphic Tee Listen to More Words of Wisdom Wednesday Episodes {{LISTEN TO THE WOWW CAMPAIGN PODCAST ON ITUNES}}
