Born in 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland, Betty Cooke was a trailblazing designer celebrated for her minimalist and sculptural jewelry. Her work is defined by clean lines, geometric forms, and a timeless elegance that resonated across generations. After studying at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where she later became a beloved faculty member, Betty opened her own studio and eventually co-founded The Store Ltd., a Baltimore institution that showcased her work for over five decades. Her jewelry, often handcrafted in silver and gold with touches of wood or acrylic, is iconic for its simplicity and boldness—pieces that remain instantly recognizable as “Betty Cooke.” Cooke's influence is immortalized in museums, galleries, and in the collections of those fortunate enough to own her designs. Her legacy is one of innovation, elegance, and unwavering dedication to her craft.About Ellen Lupton:Ellen Lupton is one of the most influential voices in contemporary graphic design. Born in 1963, she is a celebrated designer, writer, curator, and educator whose work has profoundly shaped design education and practice. After graduating from Cooper Union in 1985, she became a curator at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, where she curated groundbreaking exhibitions that connected design to culture and society. Ellen is perhaps best known for her book Thinking with Type, first published in 2004, which has become an essential guide for designers and is used in classrooms worldwide. Beyond her writing, she has played a pivotal role in shaping the Graphic Design MFA program at MICA, inspiring generations of designers with her innovative teaching methods. Her body of work extends to over 20 books, exploring topics from typography to storytelling in design. Ellen's contributions continue to influence how designers think, create, and communicate in today's visual world.Keep up with what Ellen Lupton's up to:Instagram | Website ____View all the visually rich 1-min reels of each woman on IG below:Instagram: Amber AsayInstagram: Women Designers Pod

In an age that seems dominated by conflict, it's important that we step back and remind ourselves of our amazing capacity to work together. And there's perhaps no greater example of that than the modern city. From the smallest details to the large-scale infrastructure, every piece of a city was thought about, designed, and built by someone to make one large living thing we could all inhabit. When it all works well, it enables our society to work well, too. Roman Mars has spent his career chronicling these bits of human ingenuity that we so often take for granted—things like the utility codes, the curb cuts, the traffic signals, and much more. As host of the 99% Invisible Podcast and, with Kurt Kohlstedt, co-author of the book The 99% Invisible City: A Field Guide to the Hidden World of Everyday Design, his work challenges all of us to look up and around, and to think about the how and the why of design around the world in a different way. In this first episode of season two, Saint Rose graduate and art director at TracyLocke, Susi Cadena talks about working and living in New York City, designing for big brands like Pepsi and Godiva, navigating the process of corporate sponsorship for foreign nationals working in the U.S., and TracyLocke's Design Collective. She also shares her academic story of starting college as a business administration major that ends with her graduating with a B.F.A. in graphic design and that one drawing class that changed her life. Susi also schools me in agency jargon such as “Out of Home,” “O.N.D.,” and “A.M.J.” Grab a bag of Lays or a box of Godiva and press play.Show LinksSusi's portfolioInstagram profileLinkedIn profileTracyLocke99% Invisible Ep. 140: VexillonaireLos Angeles DodgersDia de los MuertosPepsiPurely Patricia The Intro MusicSynergistic Effect by morgantj (copyright 2011 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license.)
Vantablack is a pigment that reaches a level of darkness that’s so intense, it’s kind of upsetting. It’s so black it’s like looking at a hole cut out of the universe. If it looks unreal, it’s because Vantablack isn’t actually a color, it’s a form of nanotechnology. It was created by the tech industry for the tech industry, but this strange dark material would also go on to turn the art world on its head. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Why do kids' clothes have pockets? What’s a chambray shirt?Should I burn my cargo shorts? If you have a question about what’s in your closet, don’t miss this episode. This week we talk to Avery Trufelman, creator and host of the award-winning Articles of Interest from @99piorg, a podcast that looks at what we wear and why we wear it.
"The Cut is a magazine-based podcast and a chronicle of the way we live now."From dick pics to tarot cards and then irony to earnest, The Cut isn't afraid to touch anything.Avery Trufelman took over New York Magazine's The Cut podcast in August 2020 and jokes about her experience to date as being like a cover band covering someone else's songs, but it's a podcast.Just as with her previous podcast Articles of Interest, exploring the social and cultural history of clothing, Avery takes listeners to the crux of the story before unraveling it with them.In this episode of MetaPod, Avery Trufelman talks with us about her career in podcasting for shows like Articles of Interest, what it's been like to move to a new city to take over a show as a new host and the "delicious" topics that The Cut as both a magazine and a podcast has in mind for 2021.Alongside dispelling a few myths about the podcast's target audience (we turned Kev around here), we also get into important topics such as how deep a host's voice can go over time.
On Wednesday's Houston Matters: Dr. Umair Shah, executive director of Harris County Public Health, gives us an update on the COVID-19 situation in the region. Then our political roundup includes the latest in local, state, and national politics. Plus Roman Mars, host of the podcast 99% Invisible, discusses his new book, The 99% Invisible City:... Read More
99% Invisible host Roman Mars discusses his new book why it’s taken him a decade to finally write a 99% Invisible book The 99% Invisible City: A Field Guide to the Hidden World of Everyday Design, all of the thought that this design fan put into the look of his first book, and some of the secret publishing considerations that determine everything from how many units get returned to whether a book gets sold by Costco. We talk about the baseball player who became synonymous with stairs to nowhere and other architectural elements that have outlasted their usefulness, how the lost art of neon tube bending is making a comeback, and how residents, local governments, and more affect the look and character of a neighborhood. For instance, Roman shares how taxes have impacted the shape buildings throughout history, and the role that design plays in making our public spaces safer and our cities more pedestrian friendly during the current pandemic. Plus we talk about creepy dolls, librarians on a power trip, the beautiful hideousness of city flags, and San Francisco's love/hate relationship with the TransAmerica pyramid.
